Davis lives the American dream

ho are we?

Our nation’s character resides in its questions, but the struggle for insight remains our biggest test.

All voices clamor to be heard yet those with the capacity to listen might be lost in a weak supply chain of the openhearted. Who among us defines what makes us Americans, much less Davisites?

It’s simplest to look at luminaries in our midst — titled, awarded systems and individuals that lead by market share in public discourse. But should they be considered our fullest representation?

That’s for you to decide.

In preparation for this Fourth of July weekend, we bring you Voices of America: a compact

collection of your neighbors’ stories — people who also selected Davis as their home.

They were chosen as much for their relative anonymity as they were for their luster.

Not everyone will be a mayor, chancellor or newspaper publisher.

Our goal? To inspire a dialogue about who we are — what it means to be an American from Davis — without affecting an answer. As you sit with each feature, we hope you’ll think about how these individuals contribute to our community identity.

Do you relate to them or do you feel disconnected? If you were the editor, who would you choose to fill these pages? Could your story fit just as easily?

For the record, that last question was a trick; we know it would.

To some degree, Voices of

America is a surface scratcher — richness is a daily discovery in Davis. After all, talent, experience, depth and expertise are all inherent in a university town located just twenty miles from the State Capital.

Even so, we believe you’re in for some truly extraordinary accounts. We respect and thank each participant for opening their lives to us. And to you. s you reflect on these pages, we invite you to comment with your own star-spangled suggestions. We know lack of space neglected many stories and resulted in an incomplete publication. For as relevant as it is to ask who we are, it’s equally important to question, are we you?

May you realize the grace and opportunity stated in the founding of our country, and may your value be considered equal to those who generate top results on a Google search.

NJ Mvondo: Rocking multiculturalism for families

By Caleb Hampton Enterprise staff writer NJ Mvondo is an artist, writer, entrepreneur and founder of Multiculturalism Rocks, an umbrella under which she operates a pop-up bookstore, a publishing imprint and an arts initiative. Over the past decade, she has worked to make multicultural children’s books more accessible to families in Davis and beyond.

Born and raised in Cameroon, stories were important to Mvondo from an early age as a way to express herself and to overcome childhood traumas.

“We have a tradition of storytelling,” Mvondo said of her Bulu tribe. “We use stories not just to entertain ourselves but to teach each other, to celebrate each other and as a tool to help each other heal.”

Mvondo showed an early knack for creativity and entrepreneurship. When she was 7, she authored a series of short stories, which she made copies of and sold to her classmates. She succeeded in reaching her revenue objectives, bringing in enough money to buy herself an ice cream.

Mvondo also loved reading books as a child.

“The ones that spoke to me the most were the ones of resilience,” she said. “Living in Cameroon, I was lucky to have access to stories with kids in them that looked like me.”

After moving to the Bay Area for college in 2004, Mvondo got a job in an independent bookstore. Specializing in children’s books, she noticed a disconnect between the store’s customers and the content of the books. “The families who were shopping at the store were culturally diverse,” she said, “but there weren’t many books with kids who were not white.”

Mvondo began doing her own research to find children’s books by authors from different backgrounds. She compiled lists and gave them to the store’s book buyer. “The books I recommended sold very quickly,” she said. “People were craving them.”

After moving to Davis in 2009, Mvondo founded Multiculturalism Rocks as a blog to review and recommend children’s books written by people of color. As more and more of her friends became parents and expressed how hard it was to find children’s books with Black or brown characters, Mvondo began thinking about how to make those books more accessible.

In 2017, she bought a business license, a foldable table and 10 copies of 10 different titles. The first event she went to with her pop-up bookstore was the International Festival in Davis. “I sold out of several titles,” she said. Among her customers were several teachers looking for books for their classrooms.

This year, Multiculturalism Rocks became its own company through which Mvondo continues to sell books online and at events, publish new books and run the Healing Arts Project, a collaboration exploring how art can be used as a medium for healing. Mvondo recently organized a virtual festival for Juneteenth and regularly works on projects with the Yolo County Library.

While multicultural books for children have become easier to access — thanks to the efforts of people like her — Mvondo said there is still work to do. “Today, it is so much better than before, but the work is still needed,” she said. “I’m hoping I’ll continue to be able to serve the community.

Alejandro Zambrano: Embracing a new beginning

Enterprise staff writer WOODLAND — “Oh. My. God.” That's how Alejandro Zambrano reacted when shown his arrest mugshots from over the years, the images reflecting his struggles with bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, homelessness and methamphetamine addiction.

Back then, Zambrano was considered a nuisance in the city of Davis, racking up more than 40 contacts with police in six months, leading to arrests for public intoxication, resisting arrest and, finally, felony assault and battery.

Something had to be done.

Yolo County prosecutors and Zambrano’s public defender, Allison Zuvela, lobbied for his enrollment in Mental Health Court, a diversion program targeting defendants whose mental illness is the driving force behind their criminal conduct.

Spanning a minimum of 18 months, the program engages its participants in intensive treatment with the goal of reducing their hospitalizations, arrests and jail time — essentially, getting them back on the right track.

That’s where Zambrano is today. Once homeless, he’s preparing to purchase his first home and continue his education. Once substance-addicted, he’s marking several years of sobriety with his mental health in check.

“I thank God for giving me another chance on life,” Zambrano said. Through Mental Health Court, “I’ve regained everything that I lost, like my dignity and self-respect. ” Nearly three years after his enrollment, Zambrano and dozens of others recently celebrated his graduation from the program — the first to be held in open court since the COVID-19 pandemic relegated proceedings online through Zoom.

“It’s so strange to see everybody in person,” Yolo Superior Court Judge Peter Williams, who presides over Mental Health Court, said as he took the bench for the June 17 ceremony. “Alejandro, it’s good to see you in three dimensions.”

From then on it was Zambrano’s day, as Williams and others who comprise the Mental Health Court team — attorneys, probation officers and Health and Human Services Agency staff — lauded Zambrano’s success.

It didn’t come easy, they noted. But despite some missteps along the way, Zambrano ultimately acknowledged his bipolar disorder, committed to taking his medications and took personal responsibility for his actions.

“I could either fight it and go against the current, or just accept it and make it easier for me,”

Zambrano said. “So that’s what I did.”

He also took a different view of his bipolar disorder and PTSD — the result of multiple negative life experiences, including six attempts at suicide.

“I don’t call them illnesses,” he said. “I call it a challenge, because that’s what it is.”

“I’m so impressed with you, and the insight that you’ve shown,” HHSA case worker Terri Lipelt told Zambrano, noting that the onetime “nuisance” now gives back to his community with volunteer work at the Fourth & Hope homeless shelter and Public Defender’s clothing closet in Woodland.

Probation Officer Stephen Svetich recalled Zambrano’s initial interview with the Probation Department to determine his suitability for Mental Health Court. They took a pass at first, citing his public safety risk.

But Zuvela and prosecutors, particularly Supervising Deputy District Attorney Chris Bulkeley, weren’t having it.

“You’re going to get Mr. Zambrano into your program, and you’re going to make it work,” the attorneys told Svetich at the time. “You’ve proved me wrong from the moment I met you, and I’m glad for it.”

Added Bulkeley: "It's been a long road. Thank you for being successful. I'm overjoyed."

Zambrano’s achievements include publishing a book — “Healing Through Poetry,” a compilation of journal entries he penned in poetic form over the past several years.

“I never thought in a million years I would be a published author,” Zambrano said. “I still think, is it real? Let me pinch my cheeks.”

Currently a student at Woodland Community College, Zambrano plans to study social justice and human rights at Arizona State University and ultimately launch a film production company. In his "down time," he wants to connect the homeless with the services available to them.

Having been homeless himself, “I feel that they can identify with me,” he said.

At his graduation ceremony, Zambrano credited his peers in the program, from “newbies” to veterans, for serving as his support network and helping him navigate life’s curveballs.

When they gave their status updates during court check-ins, “I would pay close attention to what they had to say. They were my teachers,” Zambrano said.

To those who come after him, Zambrano offers some simple advice: Don’t give up.

“Never give up hope,” he said. “Learn how to trust people, and keep pressing forward and forward and forward.”

Antonio De Loera-Brust: Crafting progress during crisis

By Caleb Hampton Enterprise staff writer It was March when Antonio De Loera-Brust, Yolo County’s recent Latino outreach specialist, saw a familiar story starting to play out. Without enough COVID-19 vaccine doses to go around, Yolo County faced a choice. It could continue with a strictly age-based system for vaccinations or begin allocating doses for specific groups of essential workers.

County authorities cited studies showing that older adults were at the greatest risk for death or serious illness from the virus. The data seemed incontrovertible, but it wasn’t the full picture.

An analysis of death records from the California Department of Public Health indicated Latino food and agriculture workers experienced a nearly 60 percent increase in mortality during the pandemic compared to just a 6 percent increase for white working age adults.

Further studies showed farmworkers, who are more likely to live in crowded, multigenerational homes, were at especially high risk of transmitting the virus to older family members who, for various reasons, faced barriers to accessing vaccines even if they were eligible. To further raise the stakes, Yolo County’s farmworker population would double in a matter of weeks with the arrival of thousands of migrant workers.

Community advocates warned there could be terrible consequences of delaying vaccinations for the county’s farmworkers. But vaccinating those workers would mean delaying doses for other local residents.

worked with local farmworker communities long enough to know they were never likely to win out.

Yolo County — and counties across California — were sticking with the age-based system.

While he was a student at Davis Senior High School, De Loera-Brust tutored English at the Madison Migrant Center. Later, as a college student, he ran the after-school program at the center.

“These communities are the backbone of the county’s economy and identity” he said. “For a long time, I don’t think they have gotten a fair shake.”

The experiences motivated De Loera-Brust to pursue a career in politics. In the past few years, he has worked as a legislative aid in the U.S. House of Representatives and worked on the presidential campaigns of Julián Castro and Elizabeth Warren.

He was recently appointed to the staff of the U.S. secretary of state, Antony Blinken.

“As a Latino who has worked in politics and government, I’ve thought a lot about the question of how you create equal access to the institutions of government,” he said. The pandemic brought many of the inequities he had observed into stark relief.

Early on in the pandemic, Yolo County held a testing clinic in Knights Landing and the materials ran out before everyone could be tested. The people in line, mainly Latino agricultural workers, politely asked the health workers to inform them when more tests became available.

A few days later, the same thing happened in Davis, but the people who didn’t get a test were angry, De Loera-Brust said. Some of them called their county supervisor. By the end of the week,

county health workers were back in Davis to finish the tests.

“The county responded to that pressure and devoted resources,” De Loera-Brust said. “I don’t think we went back out to Knights Landing for another two weeks.”

The episode illustrated a self-perpetuating cycle, he said. “People who government serves get angry when they aren’t served because they feel entitled to it.” Meanwhile, for the people in Knights Landing, “no one had any expectation that the government would serve them because it never had.”

What he hoped to achieve working for the county, De Loera-Brust said, was to “create an expectation within government and within the Latino community that this was our government, too.” The pandemic provided plenty of opportunities, with much of the response falling to local government to deliver. “This was local government’s finest hour,” De Loera-Brust said. “The county invented a social safety net out of scratch.”

All of these efforts led up to the distribution of vaccines. Before long — and while farmworkers in many other counties continued to wait — Yolo County heeded the calls to prioritize vaccinating farmworkers. De Loera-Brust helped coordinate a campaign to overcome barriers — a digital divide, language barriers, limited transportation, long work hours — and get farmworkers vaccinated.

Day after day, the Yolo County team went out to fields around the county to vaccinate workers. “We were out there sometimes in the rain and mud,” De Loera-Brust said. He estimates that more than 80 percent of the county’s farmworkers are now vaccinated, enough to reach herd immunity. He’s sure that the effort prevented outbreaks.

“It’s the thing in my life that I’m most proud of,” he said. “I felt we owed it to them to have them go first for once. Because we did that, I think this year’s harvest will be less painful than last year’s.”

Yolo County should be proud of the vaccination campaign, De Loera-Brust said, but after the pandemic it shouldn’t settle back in to business as usual. “Do we go back to how it was or do we take the opportunity to build a society that works for everyone?”

The lessons learned in Yolo County about building an inclusive society can also be applied across the country. “Out of this national trauma comes a new narrative of who we can be,” De Loera-Brust said.

Emily Lo: Finding a new passion in a new land

By Lauren Keene Enterprise staff writer It was the promise of the American dream that brought Emily Lo’s family to the United States.

Forty years later, she’s living it herself.

Born and raised to age 12 in Taiwan, Lo, along with her parents and two older sisters, moved to the East Bay area in 1981, several years after her father attended an engineering certification program at UCLA. “He just fell in love with the country, the opportunities, that you could do anything, be anything if you work hard,” said Lo, a longtime captain with the Davis Fire Department.

As a teenager, Lo envisioned a career in hotel management, figuring that “the people that I love will always have a roof over their head.” But a chance encounter with a family friend changed all that.

The friend, a former dispatcher in Southern California who later became a paramedic firefighter with the Vacaville Fire Department, asked Lo whether she’d ever considered the fire service.

“I don’t see you sitting in an office,” he told her, noting Lo’s athleticism from playing high-school basketball. Intrigued, “I looked into it.”

So when Lo’s family moved to Southern California for a work opportunity, Lo and one of her sisters stayed behind. Lo enrolled at Solano Community College in Fairfield, which offered a 16-week fire academy with instructors from area fire departments.

“I fell in love with it,” Lo recalled.

“Learning stopped being a chore, and everything clicked.”

As for her family’s reaction, “it took a little bit of convincing. It was as foreign to them as it was to me,” Lo said. “But my dad was always like, ‘Whatever you’re going to be, be the best you can be.’

Ultimately, they were very, very proud.”

The academy gave way to a job offer from the Fairfield Fire Department, which Lo joined at age 20, becoming the department’s only woman and Asian American firefighter at the time.

“Fairfield gave me a lot of good foundations,” but low pay and understaffing

chipped away at employee morale, Lo recalled. A year and a half later, she found herself in Davis, where she’ll mark her 30-year anniversary with the department in September.

“I came here because of the job. I stayed here because of the city,” Lo said, citing Davis’ low crime rate, family-friendly neighborhoods and likeminded citizens.

And in a country where women make up about 3 percent of the nation’s fire service, Davis came in well above that at 13 percent.

Lo credits two of her superiors at the time, Capt.

Judi Cutaia and Rose Conroy, who would later become Davis fire chief — the first woman in California to lead a municipal fire department — with teaching her the importance of public service and attention to detail.

And while mindful that affirmative-action policies helped her get a foot in the door, “at the same time, I understand that what I choose to do with that opportunity is 100-percent up to me,” Lo said.

Lo credits “naïveté, good people, humor and thick skin” with helping her navigate professional challenges, including the decades of service calls that range from life-affirming to heart-wrenching.

In 2002, she rose to the rank of captain, a post that allows her to serve as family breadwinner for her husband Rob Blankenship and their two children: Austin, 14; and Lola, 11.

Today, Lo says she’s “immensely proud” of her work, and gratified that the concept of the American dream is alive and well in her kids.

“In many ways, they have more privileges than many others. They have a better understanding of the world around them, what it means to be different and how to embrace those differences,” Lo said.

“My daughter knows the concept of working twice as hard to be seen as equal holds true for her.

My son is learning to be a champion and a voice for those less fortunate,” Lo said. “I am living the dream.”

Renee Xiang: Witness to opportunity

By Edward Booth Enterprise staff writer Renee Xiang, a recent graduate of Davis Senior High School who’s lived in Davis since she was 1 year old, will be off to Chicago in the fall to study film at DePaul University.

Xiang also worked as a print editor for The HUB, the DHS student newspaper, last year, over a period of time in which students were learning from a distance and were relatively disconnected from their classmates because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Xiang said in an email that she feels like she grew up between two different spheres of influence, in a way — though she’s lived in Davis pretty much all her life, she’s also spent quite a few summers visiting her grandparents in Wuxi, China, a city of several million people. Xiang added that though she’s excited for change and to explore Chicago, Davis has been an amazing place to grow up in.

“Compared to Wuxi, I would say that Davis is definitely a much more quiet and sheltered community, which of course has its pros and its cons,” Xiang said in an email. “It’s hard to know a big city with the kind of familiarity with which you can know a town like Davis, and that has both made me feel more connected to it and — as I’ve gotten older — has made me a bit desperate for some change in scenery.”

She said she feels like her whole childhood consisted of her witnessing her parents carry out their version of the American Dream firsthand, and, despite the prejudices and flaws that exist within the American socioeconomic system, their story will always be immensely inspirational to her.

Xiang added that though she and her family don’t typically do anything special to celebrate the Fourth of July, she believes that the holiday should be a time for both celebration and reflection.

Xiang hopes to eventually work in the film industry. She’s inspired by films such as “Parasite” and the “Florida Project,” which she said are not only completely original screenplays with sizable budgets — “which is seemingly becoming increasingly rare in the film industry (and especially in Hollywood), she said — but are also pioneers for diverse representation on and off the screen. Xiang, in an interview for a previous story, said her work in journalism, and especially the mission to “give voice to the voiceless,” resonates with her personally when it comes to filmmaking.

“Even though the Oscars were a bit of a disappointment this year, seeing filmmakers like Lee Isaac Chung and Chloé Zhao being nominated for and winning major awards is a huge step forward in a largely white male-dominated industry,” Xiang said.
