Inspired by goodwill messaging efforts around the world, the El Dorado Hills Chamber of Commerce announces the creation of a Positivity Wall project in El Dorado Hills Town Center. Residents and visitors are invited to leave a positive message, words of encouragement or a wish on a card to attach to the Positivity Wall. To participate, complimentary supplies can be found inside the California Welcome Center adjacent to the Chamber of Commerce at 2085 Vine St., Suite 105, in El Dorado Hills Town Center. The California Welcome Center’s hours are 9 a.m.-5p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The Positivity Wall project — the first of its kind for El Dorado Hills — is located directly in front of the chamber and California Welcome Center. “Part of the chamber’s mission is to promote our community and what better way to promote El Dorado Hills than with positive messages from our residents and visitors,” shared Debbie Manning, El Dorado Hills Chamber president & CEO. WHAT’S HAPPENING Stellar students Grace Donaghey of El Dorado Hills was recently named to the University of New Hampshire’s Dean’s List for the spring 2020 semester. Andrew Bellas of El Dorado Hills was named to the Miami University spring 201920 President’s List. Jaylen Johnson of El Dorado Hills was named to Lewis University’s Dean’s List for the 2020 spring semester. Johnson is studying aviation flight management. World turned upside down As we celebrate 244 years as a nation it is a time to remember a few truths. America is a unique nation — revolutionary, in fact. It was the first to declare in its founding document that all men are created equal, that there are proper purposes of government with the consent of the governed and that there are limits on political authority. Humanity is flawed. But the Declaration of Independence sets forth an ideal that we can do better. No man or woman should be intimidated from the pursuit of happiness. Each American is free to work hard ... or not. To achieve ... or not. No one has the lawful power to tell Americans that they cannot — or will not — succeed. Two films available via online or streaming services this month address these important issues, among others. One is a musical. The other is a black-and-white documentary. Both are controversial. Both are wildly successful in their venues. And both draw on the African-American experience to teach all Americans just what freedom really is.

‘Hamilton’ The winner of numerous awards, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “Hamilton: An American Musical” was a Broadway success from its debut in 2015. Until the temporary closing of all theaters in New York City, tickets to “Hamilton” were among the most highly desired. Tickets often were

The climax of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech at the Lincoln Memorial during the March on Washington demonstration on Aug. 28, 1963, in Washington, D.C. ordered a year in advance. Miranda was inspired to write “Hamilton” after reading a biography on Alexander Hamilton. Few Americans knew much (if anything) about this Founding Father other than he graces the $10 bill. Miranda wanted to change that. A talented artist in his own right, Miranda was also concerned about the decline of Broadway. Audiences were falling off for live theater. He believed hip-hop and rap could breathe new life into an aging institution. He also thought presenting historical material from a new perspective would fire imaginations. “Hamilton” scandalized newspapers before its opening to the public. The Founding Fathers — portrayed by persons of color? Eighteenth and 19th century history sung in hip-hop, rap and soul? Turns out, Miranda’s concept was brilliant. Audiences embraced the music and the story told about this amazing immigrant and his ideas. And there is the brilliance: the ideas. The “idea” of America, as presented by the musical, is that America is for everyone. Books on the Founding Fathers found a new audience, too. A ticket to “Hamilton” in New York costs $500 or more. But you can see an original cast performance this month on Disney+. The streaming service is $6.99 a month. “Hamilton” makes its livestream debut on Friday, July 3.

‘Uncle Tom’ This eye-opening film from director Justin Malone and executive producer Larry Elder examines the American values of self-empowerment, freedom of thought and breaking the chains that hold one back. This work features media personalities,

ministers, civil rights activists, veterans and a self-employed plumber who seeks to know the truth of being black in America. The film enjoyed a 9.8 rating on Rotten Tomatoes as of June 26, with amazingly positive reviews. (Strangely, the page for the movie was pulled last weekend. Hopefully, it will return). Told through the eyes of black conservative Americans, the film shows a perspective and teaches a history few hear about in schools today: how black America went from 5 percent literacy in the slave era to 50 percent literacy just 50 years later — an astonishing leap of achievement — and valued education as the way to improve each generation; and how leaders like Booker T. Washington established schools and colleges to teach an emerging people how to participate in the great American experiment by establishing businesses, by becoming physicians, lawyers and MBAs. Not everyone was pleased to see this. The term “Uncle Tom” is a pejorative applied to persons of color who refuse to conform to a monolith culture controlled by those who would have them give up on their dreams of freedom and achievement. The film takes this matter head-on, detailing how America is for all people and that no one has the right to dictate to the conscience of an individual American. Nor does anyone have the right to shame an American for wanting to become a success. Viewers of every ethnicity will find themselves shedding any excuses for failure. It’s about having the American dream, as Dr. King so rightly put it. “Uncle Tom” can be watched online for $19.99 at uncletom.com.

To celebrate the opening weekend, customers enjoyed a drive-in, live show Friday evening featuring the popular local band Rolling Heads. Families listened from their cars and were treated to prizes and giveaways. Festivities continued the next day with a Cappuccino Cruisers Classic Cars event where visitors were invited to explore one-of-a-kind cars with live music and more giveaways throughout the morning. Along with Safeway, businesses currently open include Safeway Fuel, Dentists of El Dorado Hills (Pacific Dental Services), Jon & Bon’s Yogurt Shoppe and Fresh Cleaners. Bark Avenue, Chase Bank, Great Clips, Mexico Lindo Restaurant, Nail Retreat are slated for a July opening while Sourdough & Co. will be ready this fall.

Both productions encourage the viewer to drop any sense of victimhood — it will not benefit you and could cause great harm. Instead, embrace your birthright to pursue your individual success as you see it. This is the greatest country in the world. As Hamilton raps, “I’m just like my country/I’m young, scrappy and hungry/And I’m not throwing away my shot.” This Independence Day, may we look forward together as a people to better days. As Dr. King put it: “This will be the day when all of God’s children will be able to sing with new meaning, ‘My country ’tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing. Kittens help heal nurse’s wounds Jana Rossi Staff writer Holly Chadburn or “Nurse Holly” was a bit down on her luck when she submitted an application to Fat Kitty City in search of a Siamese kitten. She had recently separated from her husband, her three grown children were no longer living at home and she was on the road to recovery after falling seriously ill to COVID-19. Chadburn decided a furry companion was just what the doctor ordered. Vicki Shapleton, adoption coordinator for Fat Kitty City, received the application and immediately knew she had the perfect kitten, a Himalayan/Siamese mix. After delving deeper into Nurse Holly’s recent turn of events, Shapleton told Village Life she knew she wanted to take it a step further. Nurse Holly worked on the COVID-19 floor at Sutter Hospital in Roseville but does not believe she contracted the virus while at work. Her 82-year-old mother helped care for her until she became too ill and was rushed to the hospital. Her coworkers were now her caregivers, initially not recognizing the patient on the hospital bed. also became infected but in a milder manner and has since recovered. Meanwhile, back at Fat Kitty City, the normal adoption fee for such a breed of cat would be more than $200 but Shapleton had another plan and went directly to the rescue organization’s owner Cindy Minghelli with an idea: Fat Kitty City would sponsor the adoption fee to thank Nurse Holly for her service and to bring her some clearly deserved joy. Minghelli was immediately on board with the special adoption. Shapleton said she was just as excited to deliver the news as Nurse Holly was to receive it. Today, Lauren, the Himalayan/ Siamese mix, and Ralph, not a Fat Kitty City kitten but one in dire need of finding a good home, are enjoying the good life — a little reprieve from the day-to-day chaos life can bring.

That’s because the number of homes on the market is at historically low levels. Typically at this time of the year the county would have between 850 and 1,000 homes listed for sale. We’re not even close. El Dorado County

currently has around 600 homes listed. That number is about right for December but not for what should be the best-selling months in the year. When home buyers can’t find a suitable home, they postpone shopping, or they look someplace else. One place buyers are looking are the new homes in El Dorado Hills. New home sales are hitting record sales numbers according to Kirk Bone, with Parker Development. It’s not clear whether the shortage of inventory is temporary or whether county homeowners have decided to stay put. What is clear is that COVID-19 has

accelerated homeowners’ interest in relocating out of urban, coastal cities to safe, more affordable small towns and suburbs inland. There are a few signs that exodus has already begun. Vacancy rates are climbing and rents are dropping or remaining flat in all major Northern California cities including San Francisco, San Jose, Oakland and Sacramento, according to apartment data firm, RealPage. The median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in San Francisco is down nearly 10% from a year earlier and the vacancy rate has doubled. Millennials who moved to the big cities seeking employment are taking advantage of the working from home business model and relocating to a less congested environment. Facebook’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg has said as many as 50% of his 45,000 Bay Area employees could be working remotely. Twitter will now allow many employees to continue working from home “forever” and Square wants employees “to be able to work where they want in an environment that suits them.” The flight from our big, coastal cites to inland locales has been slowly going on for years. Led by retirees downsizing in home prices, they move from million-dollar, small-or medium-sized homes in coastal communities to less expensive, larger homes like those in El Dorado County. Those relocating seniors are about to be left in the dust by a stampeding heard of millennials.
