Piper facing child porn allegations Thomas Frey Staff writer Jordan Piper and his wife Lindsay were charged in 2021 with the 2020 murder of his 11-year-old son Roman Lopez. Now Jordan faces a new charge — sexual exploitation of a young girl. The U.S. District Court for Eastern California filed a criminal complaint Tuesday after FBI Special Agent Scott Schofield investigated suspicions Jordan had filmed a minor in the nude, which stemmed from the investigation into Roman’s death. When detectives with the Placerville Police Department were searching for evidence following the discovery of the boy’s body in a storage bin in the basement of a Placerville home the family had been renting they found video recordings of a girl younger than 18, according to the complaint. During the investigation law enforcement seized a digital camera and other devices that contained “surreptitious recordings of (the minor),” states the complaint. A video that appeared to have been captured in October 2019 on a GoPro camera shows the defendant in the act of removing the camera from behind a wall outlet in the bathroom of a Groveland rental home, according to court documents. On Jordan’s Samsung cell phone investigators say they found screen captures of the minor in “various states of undress and usually nude.” Videos from Oct. 4-5, 2019, depict the minor using the bathroom and bathing other children. The criminal complaint notes approximately 433 nude images of the minor were found on Jordan’s cell phone and many were focused on the genitals or pubic area. “The video camera was placed in a manner to maximize the chances of recording the genitals,” the complaint reads. Between Dec. 16-24, 2019, Jordan reportedly sent a series of texts about a sexual “Christmas gift” where he was asking the minor’s opinion. Investigators say the texts escalated into sending pictures to the minor and then offering $250 for the minor to use the “Chistmas gift” on herself, the complaint states. A child pornography conviction for Jordan would result in a minimum sentence of 15 years in prison n

MOSQUITO BRIDGE
Prep work to coincide annual repairs Mountain Democrat staff The Mosquito Bridge will close for annual maintenance July 5 and next week tree removal on Mosquito Road south of the bridge will begin in preparation for construction of a new bridge, according to the El Dorado County Department of Transportation. The Mosquito Bridge is expected to reopen Aug. 8 as the school year begins. The county’s contractor will also take out trees on the north side of the
Mosquito Bridge and perform roadway realignment for the northern tie-in of the new bridge. That work will take place while the Mosquito Bridge is shut down for maintenance, requiring a full closure of Mosquito Road from .6 miles north of the bridge to .8 miles south of the bridge. During the closure those traveling to and from the Mosquito and Swansboro area will have to use Rock Creek Road as a detour. County officials say the Aug. 8 reopening may be pushed out once the project
schedule is updated and if that extension is needed, notification will be provided at least two weeks in advance. Tree work planned for the week of June 27 will not require closure of Mosquito Road. County officials are asking motorists to reduce speeds and keep an eye out for tree removal equipment and workers. Ronald Darr Jr. passed away June 6 peacefully in his sleep from heart disease and asthma. He was preceded in death by his parents Ronald and Margaret Darr. He is survived by seven siblings Michael Sr. (Linda) Darr, Kevin Sr. (Terri) Darr, Rosemary (Patrick) Pendola, Eileen (David) Butterfield, Hanora (Robert) Morris, Mary (Jimmie) Owens and Thomas (Anne) Darr, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Jeannette Marini, age 95, passed away peacefully June 6 in San Jose, Calif. Born in Youngstown, Ohio, the youngest child of James DeBartolo and Mary DeCapita DeBartolo; sibling to Dolores, Adelmo, Dena and Frank; all deceased. Married to Ernest Norge Marini (deceased) of Greenville, Penn., for 61 years. They spent most of their life together at their mountain home in Pollock Pines, Calif. She will be remembered for her active church life, love of singing and piano playing, her delicious cooking and fondness for feeding family and friends and her proud Italian heritage. She leaves behind a large, loving family, including many nieces and nephews. A memorial service on July 7 at 10 a.m. will be held at Oak Hill Funeral Home & Memorial Park, 300 Curtner Ave., San Jose, Calif. and is open to all who loved her. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations sent to Samaritan’s Purse, a Christian organization supported by Jeannette and Ernie.

Dean was born in Bakersfield, Calif. He was the second of five children born to Paul and Evelyn Sneddon Madeira. He began working at age 9 delivering newspapers for the Bakersfield Californian and then for the Los Angeles Times at age 12. At age 15 he obtained a hardship family drivers license to be able to deliver the newspapers to the carriers, which was a better paying position. At age 17 he joined the U.S. Navy serving aboard the USS Salisbury Sound. After the service he held various salesman positions and donated time as a reserve for the Kern County Sheriff’s Department. He married Ramona Brooks in 1949 and two daughters were born to this marriage, Karen in 1951 and Michele in 1952. He and Ramona divorced in 1961. Dean then married Sandra Pletcher, making their home in San Jose. There were three children born to this marriage; son Jeff in 1962, daughter Meritt in 1964 and daughter Kathy in 1969. In San Jose Dean was employed by the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Department fulfilling his dream of always wanting to be in law enforcement. He served in many divisions but patrol was always his favorite. He graduated from San Jose State with a BA in Criminal Justice Administration and also taught Administration of Justice classes, evening division, at San Jose City College. Dean led the formation of the Santa Clara County Peace Officer’s Association, which is still active. After serving 25 years he retired as Captain of the North County jail facility. Soon after retirement he helped form the Santa Clara County Department of Corrections. Upon his second retirement Dean and Sandy moved to Placerville in 1989 purchasing a home in the Pleasant Valley area where they lived for 31 years. He loved his home and with his many skills he added many beautifying additions. Many holidays and get-togethers with family were enjoyed here over the years. When they first arrived in Placerville he went to work part time for the El Dorado County Probation Department for two years doing pre-release recommendations, receiving letters of praise from two judges for his work. He then formed Madeira Group International doing pre-employment background investigations for 30 governmental agencies. He employed several investigators. After 10 years he sold the company to one of the investigators. Dean and Sandy traveled to Europe, the east coast and took several cruises. They were married for 61 years. Dean died with complications from Parkinson’s Disease on May 28 at home as he wished at 90. He was preceded in death by his brother Paul Madeira and his sisters Peggy Rocha and Jeanne Sandoval. His sister Grace Rockett is still living. He leaves behind his wife Sandy; son Jeff; daughter Karen and husband Mike Popplewell; daughter Michele and husband Carl Varney and their families of many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; daughter Meritt and husband Steve McClure and granddaughters Katrina and Kelly McClure; daughter Kathy Madeira and grandson Derek Nuse; son-in-law Dave Nuse; sister-in-law Pat Wynn; brother-in-law Leonard Sandoval and many nieces and nephews. He loved us all and he will be missed. A private family graveside service will be held at a later date. Whenever Dean heard an emergency siren he would say “they’re playing my song.

Outbuilding fire spreads to Grizzly Flat garage Eric Jaramishian Staff writer Fire crews were called to a residential fire in Grizzly Flat early Tuesday morning on Blue Mountain Drive. The fire started in an outbuilding, according to fire officials. The spread of the fire caused a propane tank to vent, which made a garage attached to a home on the property catch fire. While the home itself sustained minor damage, the outbuilding and attached garage were significantly damaged. Fire separation walls kept the fire from moving completely into the structure, said Pioneer Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Ken Earle. “Everything worked like it was supposed to to keep the fire out of the main residence for the most part,” Earle noted.

Earle said the residents were inside the home when they were alerted by an explosion. Neighbors and even strangers checked to make sure the residents had gotten out safely. “While we were on the scene complete strangers came up and gave the residents bottles of water, food and things like that,” Earle said. “Suffice to say people really do care about one another in that community. It’s a very good example of how the community holds together.” Flames that took to surrounding vegetation were contained by firefighters. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The Pioneer, El Dorado County and Diamond Springs/El Dorado fire protection districts, as well as the Cal Fire Amador-El Dorado Unit, responded to the fire just after 6 a.m.

Give county residents a break. Cut DMV fees
I
nflation is hurting our county’s residents. Almost all of us need to drive to survive in El Dorado County so the dramatic increase in fuel prices has taken a particularly hard toll on us. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, gas JOE HARN prices have more than doubled in the last two years. The 8.6% inflation rate we have endured over the last year may be just the beginning. Food prices are likely to rise for the foreseeable future. Ukraine has historically produced a whopping 6% of all food calories traded on the international market. That supply of food has obviously been disrupted. Because we are now entering our third year of drought, water allocations for Central Valley farmers are being cut — a decision that has forced many to plant fewer crops. All this means higher prices at our supermarkets. These cost increases are going to make it tougher for working families and the less fortunate. Is there anything we can do locally to help? I think so. El Dorado County can reduce the cost of each DMV auto registration by $10 per car. Past boards of supervisors directed DMV to add a total of $10 in fees to each vehicle registration. In 1999 the supervisors supported a $1 per car charge that goes to the Sacramento Area Council of Governments’ Service Authority for Freeways I am all for the and Expressways. Homelessness: effective solutions EDITOR: his is in response to recent letters regarding the complex issue of how to help the homeless while preserving public health, safety and the livability of cities. If we are going to have a constructive debate in this county, it’s important to first acknowledge where the disagreements lie. The approach taken in San Francisco and Los Angeles and other large cities has been a disaster, both for the homeless themselves and for the livability, public safety and public health of the community. The evidence for what has happened to these once beautiful cities is overwhelming (take a walk though SF or LA, and/or read Michael Shellenberger’s “San Fransicko: How Progressives have Ruined Cities”). It is wrong to assume that anyone who doesn’t agree with that failed approach is “heartless” and lacks compassion for the vulnerable. No one should have to live on the streets. People who are homeless due to economic circumstances should be given first priority at permanent housing; temporary shelters should be available, safe, clean and drug free. The vast majority of people agree with that and support their tax dollars being used for effective solutions. The contentious issue is whether people who are mentally ill and/or addicts should be allowed to live on the streets at will or whether they should be compelled to get treatment along with other services — as is the way the problem is dealt with in almost all European cities. It is not compassion to enable addicts by providing them means to continue using; it is not treating them with human dignity to assume that they cannot be rehabilitated or that drug addiction is a lifestyle like any other; it is not compassion to allow mentally ill people to live in street encampments, a danger to themselves and others. It is not compassion to deny the reality

Cheer up, Democrats EDITOR: he election is in and the results speak volumes regarding the condition of California politically. San Francisco DA Boudin was recalled — touted as a win for conservatives everywhere. I say look closer. The replacement Boudin will be selected by the ultra-liberal Mayor London Breed. She will not select a law-and-order, transformative DA; she will choose another progressive DA because I don’t believe there are any conservative DAs left to choose from. Newsom will rout Dahle in November, setting up the governor to represent the Democratic Party in 2024 for president of the United States. Mass shootings EDITOR: s a frequent visitor to the county schools, I can honestly say not one is safe from what happened in Uvalde, Sandy Hook or Parkland. Nor is there a seriously effective way to make them safe. Australia, New Zealand, Scotland, Germany, the UK, Canada — all have banned assault weapons. Their mass shootings have effectively ended. Psychologically, I cannot fathom what drives Americans to be so violent, unless H. Rap Brown was exactly right, saying, “Violence is as American as apple pie.” When politicians use inflammatory propaganda, it is gasoline on a fire. Ask any Native American about the violence of the white “settlers” who wanted their land. During the California Gold Rush, cash bounties were paid for native scalps; many tribes were simply eliminated. (Read “Ishi, the last Yahi.”) “The only good Indian is ...” You know the rest. Read the history of American wars of conquest. Is this what our culture really is, not the “peace-loving democracy” of our mythology?

Mess with Texas, please — before it secedes
E
ven if you wanted to mess with Texas, I doubt there’s much you could do that would mess up Texas any more than it already is. For instance: This year’s Texas Republican Party’s annual convention concocted CHRIS an “interminably long platform,” according to the Texas Monthly National Magazine. For openers, the Monthly highlighted the GOP’s platform “language that declared the 2020 presidential election results illegitimate.” And reaching back, apparently to the good old days, the platform further “endorsed a referendum that would allow Texas voters to declare their secession from the United States.” (How about next
Wednesday?) “School children” should “be drilled on the humanity of the ‘preborn child,’ along with “declaring homosexuality an abnormal lifestyle choice.” (These planks were cited in the same sentence but not necessarily in a cause DALEY and effect relationship.) With a somewhat refreshing deviation from the more cultural/political realm, platform architects referenced last year’s disastrous power failures that left many Texans dead from recordsetting cold temperatures. Sen. Ted Cruz was fortunate enough to escape the worst of the state’s suffering by zipping off to Cancun wearing a tropical “jeans and polo shirt combo” because his “daughters” prettypleased him. And reaching back ... the platform further “endorsed a referendum that would allow Texas voters to declare their secession from the United States.” conventioneers “called for Texas to strengthen the electric grid” (not with regulations that keep the lights on in other states hit by extreme weather that our leaders are averse to), “but rather to defend against mythical ‘electromagnetic pulse weapons.’” It’s kind of hard to follow all of the complexities emanating from Texas these days, but the Monthly noted that a number of the 2022 planks are simply long-time notions reborn for today’s GOP electorate. Some are rehashes of Old Testament “thoushalt-nots” while others are heavy on Christianity as the “preferred religion of Western Europe and America.” Three stalwarts of Texas GOP politics were roundly booed and heckled in-person and during taped presentations. RINOs all, they
included long-term Sen. John Cornyn, Gov. Greg Abbott and Congressman Dan Crenshaw. These once-darlings of the most conservative wing of Lone Star country had the effrontery to suggest a minor gun-law limitation or two and some rigorous investigation of the Uvalde school massacre. Now traitors as well as RINOs, a hanging a-la Mike Pence isn’t currently off the table as far as I can tell. I may be going out on a limb here, but I suspect a lot of Texas Republicans have already been visited by the “electromagnetic pulse weapons” and can’t wait for another dose. because Sheriff John D’Agostini is frugal and he figured out a way to get the county and its partner agencies the equipment needed without the additional revenue, thus leading to his asking the supervisors for a suspension in the fee collection. I am confident the county and Sheriff-elect Jeff Leikauf can survive — I mean thrive — and give our residents a one-year break. Since 2006 the county has levied a $6 per vehicle fee for our Air Quality Management District. These funds have been used to purchase lower-emission school buses, finance a number of shuttle bus programs and used for other worthy initiatives. AQMD will start next fiscal year with a $4 million budget carry-forward. AQMD, with the county behind it, can find a way to make it for a year and

save us all $6. The county also levies a $1 fee for abandoned vehicle abatement. This fee has been temporarily stopped in the past. I recommend we suspend its collection again. California is a leader in some of the wrong categories — people living in poverty, homelessness and high cost of living (which pushes even more people into homelessness). El Dorado County leaders should do what they can to slow the meteoric rise in the cost of living. We have a very capable chief administrative officer. He can find the money to backfill this temporary revenue loss. I encourage the Board of Supervisors to reduce the DMV registration fee for our residents now. If you refuse to vote for candidates who seek to
ban assault weapons, ban large-capacity magazines, require background checks at all stores and gun shows, then you helped pull the trigger on those sweet children huddled together trying to call 911 as they bled to death. celebration at the construction site of the amusement complex June 17, where project crews from Level 10 Construction and Avanti Builders Inc., along with the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians tribal membership and the Red Hawk Casino management team, were present to sign the final steel beam of the hotel’s construction. Windy conditions delayed the actual “topping off ” experience but dozens signed the beam regardless. Red Hawk executives said they would “top off ” their project this week. “El Dorado County has an abundance of lakes, rivers and lots of outdoor activities for its residents and guests to enjoy,” said Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians Gaming Authority Chair Christopher Porras. “This will give the county that good mix of indoor entertainment and outdoor recreation for all guests.”

Placerville Speedway is gearing up to host one of its biggest events of the season for the pure stocks and limited late models Saturday with the annual Carnett Clash set to hit the red clay. Bryan Carnett was a true fan of the stock car divisions at Placerville Speedway while racing, owning and sponsoring both pure stocks and late models throughout the decade he spent at the track. Thanks to the support of several gracious individuals and companies, extra money will be on the line for both the limited late models and pure stocks June 25. Rounding out the race day bill will be the winged 360 sprint cars and dwarf cars. “I am hoping we can build upon the success we’ve had in previous years and have another exciting night of racing, which is the best way to remember the competitive spirit of my dad,” said Forryst Carnett, son of the late Bryan

The bridge, which is one of only three cable suspension bridges west of the Mississippi, closes for about three to four weeks every July so crews can repair the wear and tear — top to bottom. The cost of that maintenance, including labor and materials, is approximately $125,000, according to Brian Mullens, deputy director of Maintenance and Operations for DOT. The Mosquito Bridge sits about 100 feet over the South Fork of the American River and is only 9 feet, 2 inches wide. The bridge sees about 1,000 vehicle trips each day, the Mountain Democrat
previously reported. The new, ridgetop-to-ridgetop bridge will cross over the old bridge, which will remain in place for pedestrian and cyclist use. The new bridge is expected to cost more than $93 million with about a three-year construction timeline. While the county will initially have to front the bill, the money spent will be reimbursed fully through the Highway Bridge Program, a federal public highway replacement program. hen Paul Godwin began working at The Bookery he soon realized, “There were musicians up and down Main Street.” You can pick out your favorite merchants Monday night at The Green Room Social Club when they play a tribute to Pink Floyd as the Main Street Collective Monday, June 27. The musicians include Darren Coehlo-Spring, guitarist and owner of The Bookery; singer and pianist Adrienne Beatty, owner of Panic & Swoon; singer Steven Danz of The Public House; Alex Porte on banjo from Pachamama Coffee; bassist Brett Neumann of Gold Rush Energy; Ponderosa High School English teacher Joey Beatty on drums and guitar; guitarist Aron Faria with El Dorado County Hazardous Materials; violinist Elena Delacy, executive director of American River Conservancy; and singer Haley Nicole Woodward of Pure Life Collective. Poet Laureate begins literary tour of El Dorado County Arts and Culture El Dorado News release

fter a hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Laureate Trail has returned to El Dorado County, kicking off in South Lake Tahoe last week. A collaboration between Arts and Culture El Dorado and the El Dorado County Library, the Laureate Trail sees El Dorado County Poet Laureate Lara Gularte visit all six libraries in El Dorado County for free poetry readings, workshops, open mics and more. Gularte will be joined on the Trail by poets laureate past and future, as well as special guests, including the winner of the 2023 El Dorado County Poetry Out Loud competition. “The Laureate Trail is an especially visible example of how the poet laureate engages with the community and enriches the literary arts in El Dorado County. These free events are open to anyone who wants to meet the poet laureate, learn more about the literary arts or enjoy some great poetry,” said Jordan HyattMiller, development and program associate at Arts and Culture El Dorado. “As a collaboration with the El Dorado County Library, these events are a terrific way to promote literacy, build community, uncover connections and start conversations throughout the county. We’re so excited to be back on the trail with Lara Gularte.” The post of El Dorado County Poet Laureate is bestowed on a noted local poet to honor their body of work and to celebrate poetry as an art form. Consideration is given to the caliber of work, engagement with poets and writers in the community, and the critical acclaim the work has garnered. The post entails a two-year term. “I am very excited to have you come with me on the Laureate Trail,” noted Gularte. “We will gather together, making our words come alive with meaning and our creative literacy be a force!”

Her published works include “Kissing the Bee” and, most recently, “Fourth World Woman.” Nominated for several Pushcart Prizes, Gularte has been published in national and international journals and anthologies. She is affiliated with the Cagarro Colloquium: Azorian Diaspora Writers at the Portuguese Beyond Borders Institute, California State University, Fresno. In addition, Gularte is a proud member of the esteemed “Escritores Del Nuevo Sol” writers group and serves as a creative writing instructor for the Arts in Corrections program at Mule Creek prison. Her latest full-length collection, “Alice in Ruby Slippers,” was a grand prize finalist in the 2021 Eric Hoffer Book Awards. In 2019 her book “Epitaph for the Beloved” was nominated for the Northern California Book Award. In 2018 her book “In the Making of Goodbyes” was nominated for the CLMP Firecracker Award in Poetry and in 2011 her chapbook “Before I Go to Sleep” was the winner of the Red Ochre Chapbook contest. She has served as editor-in-chief for The Orchards Poetry Journal and Tule Review and is a former member of the Sacramento Poetry Center Board of Directors. She is an 11-time Pushcart Prize nominee and a seven-time Best of the Net nominee. She lives in the Sierra foothills with her husband, her little dog Zuzu and a 20-year-old cockatoo named Sugar Pie.

he farms of the Apple Hill Growers Association are known for their amazing apple crops, but the area produces much more, including wine grapes, stone fruit and a variety of vegetables. A few that might come as a surprise are lavender and blueberries and at this time of year purple and blue blooms transform the fields in the Sierra foothills. The Apple Hill Growers celebrates both crops at this month’s Lavender Blue Harvest Days continuing June 25 & 26. This sunny weekend is the perfect time to visit Apple Hill farms for you-
pick experiences, lavender and blueberry treats, crafts, artisan products and more. The lavender harvest will be on full display at Bluestone Meadow Farm. Guests will be able to cut and make their own lavender bouquets, wreaths, wands or critters. An array of locally made products, including essential oils, soaps and lotions, will be available for sale. Families can enjoy a wander through the Lavender Labyrinth and Kid Zone. The Lavender Answer Guy will answer questions about growing and using this wonderful flower. The onsite Grower Marketplace will feature baked goods, cider, jams, beverages and produce from Grandpa’s Cellar, Hidden Star Camino and Silverthorn Meadows. SMUD, a sponsor of the
event, will be on hand to help visitors make their summer plans with a guide to the Crystal Basin Recreation Area’s campgrounds, lakes and trails.
