Unexpected delights and tender homage await garden lovers Sel Richard Staff writer

I

t was a chance meeting with a frog that prompted Gloriah Jackson and her husband Freddie to purchase their home four years ago. Now impish frogs peek high and low, from beneath lines of rose bushes to succulent arrangements garnishing their haven.

The gardens in this year’s Assistance League Sierra Foothills Gardens of the Hills Tour are as delightful as they are varied. From Shingle Springs to Granite Bay, visitors will find anything from Buddhas, horses and pagodas to waterfalls, Japanese gardens and a Peruvian Pepper tree.

Two of the tour’s gardens are in El Dorado Hills, one being the Jacksons’ gem of a property. It could be dubbed a garden of unexpected delights, as Gloriah claims to be a novice green thumb. “I’m a girl who used to kill cactus,” she insisted ... as she’s surrounded by explosions of flora.

Peonies, oriental lilies and violas thrive in this shaded oasis where a bench beckons those who need quiet and respite.

Then enter the main area and meander over a bridge past vibrant cockscombs toward boxwood-edged secret gardens where tomatoes and strawberries await plucking.

Amid foxgloves, carnations, petunias and sweet alyssums, mischievous creatures hide, delighted with Gloriah’s refusal to be daunted by the unknown.

“Don’t be afraid; don’t be timid,” was advice she took to heart during her first forays into gardening. “I find things I like and I try them.”

In Granite Bay niche gardens have a personal significance to Juliet Voightlander, owner of El Dorado Nursery. With gardens named after her three children, each pays tender homage to the quirks and temperaments of her most cherished.

May 2 1:42 a.m. An unidentified man discharged a firearm at a Coach Lane gas station.

11:37 p.m. Deputies arrested a 29-year-old man on suspicion of multiple offenses, including felon in possession of ammunition, in Cameron Park (street not listed).

May 4 12:49 a.m. Deputies cited a 48-year-old allegedly in possession of a controlled substance on Coach Lane.

11:13 a.m. A catalytic converter was reported stolen on Cameron Park Drive.

2:31 p.m. Deputies arrested a 34-year-old man suspected of being under the influence of a controlled substance on Coach Lane.

4:34 p.m. Someone siphoned gas from a vehicle on Sterling Way.

Jana Rossi Staff writer Cameron Park Fire Station 88 at 2961 Alhambra Drive recently added a new engine to its fleet. Engine 88, a 2020 Smeal Spartan type 1 fire truck, replaced the station’s 2006 Smeal Spartan.

Cal Fire Battalion Chief Jed Gaines said the new Smeal is specifically designed for structure firefighting and wildland firefighting in the urban interface, perfect for fighting fires in the Sierra foothills.

“It has a shorter wheelbase and steeper approach angles that allows us to get into tighter areas within El Dorado County,” Gaines explained.

The 2020 Smeal can hold up to 700 gallons of water with a capability of pumping 2,000 gallons per minute from a hydrant. It comes equipped with an auxiliary pump, used for pump and roll operations, “a great tactic on wildland fires,” Gaines said. “It has a full set of hydraulic extrication equipment, air bags, water rescue gear, rope rescue gear for both, high and low angle rescues.”

Engine 88 will be staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The 2006 Smeal Spartan will be used as a reserve fire engine at the Cameron Park Fire Department.

The Cameron Park Community Services District has a cooperative agreement with Cal Fire to provide fire protection within the district.

A dentistry that aims to be a home away from home

F

or patients of Dale Stanec, Jr., DDS, going to the dentist feels a little like going home.

“We know all of our patients.

They’re our friends,” said Dr. Stanec, who works alongside his wife and office manager, Elena, in his Cameron Park office. “The experience in our office is very personal. We’re very small and greet each patient by name when they walk in. It’s a comfortable, homey place to have dental work done, and we like it that way.”

Dr. Stanec has been in dentistry in the Cameron Park area since 2002. As a kid, he was “always into science and math” and loved the idea of owning his own business. “I ran a lawn-mowing business as a kid — always had some kind of business going — so becoming a dentist and owning my own practice just made sense,” said Dr. Stanec. Dr. Stanec did his undergraduate work at Cal Poly,

San Luis Obispo and then attended dental school at Northwestern University in Chicago. He graduated from Northwestern in 2001 and says that, although he was born and raised in San Jose, it was a natural draw to open his practice in the foothills.

“Elena and I love this area. We had a lot of family and friends here and thought it would be a great place to raise our kids.”

In his office, Dr. Stanec offers a full scope of general and cosmetic dentistry with expertise ranging from porcelain veneers and dental implants to crowns and bridges and more. Unlike many other dentists, Dr. Stanec doesn’t employ dental hygienists or other technicians but does all of his dental work himself.

“I spend a lot of one-on-one time with my patients. It’s fun for me to do the work myself because I get to spend more time with my patients and hang out with them and really get to know them. It makes it fun to do what I do,” said Dr. Stanec.

Another advantage of keeping his practice small is that, because he sees every patient one at a time, Dr. Stanec can be very thorough and immediately answer any questions that come up. He is also able to really respect his patients’ time. “I am almost always early or on time,” said Dr. Stanec. “My patients know that, so they’re usually early or on time for their appointments, too. It’s a win win for everyone.”

Dr. Stanec is located at 3955 Cameron Park Drive — in Cameron Park. His office is right near the Goldorado Shopping Center, directly across from the new Walgreens on Palmer Drive, and is very conveniently located for all of his patients. For her dragon-loving daughter Claire, fire-breathers hide among lamb’s ear, golden lantanas, evergreen clematis and burning bush. And Dallas red lantana abound in her son Dallas’ garden, among petit series crepe myrtles, amber wave roses and lavender.

Juliet moved to her property in 1994 and took it upon herself to transform it.

“There was not one plant in the yard— just rocks,” she shared. Now 25 years later, redwood trees grant serene shade, 85 rose bushes burst with color and 30 crepe myrtle varieties flourish.

Take in the vegetable garden with flowering onions, tomatoes and peppers planted in garden boxes made from repurposed redwood from her front porch. Admire the potted orchard of semi-dwarf peach, nectarine, pluot, cherry and 20 citrus trees that seem to defy the dwarf part of their description.

And because Juliet often trials plants from her nursery to assess their viability, unusual species can be found dotting the landscape, like the Cersis Merlot or the green and gold dogwood.

Throughout the tour, visitors will be treated to a selection of pop-up boutiques with items from local artisans.

Spirea thunbergia x. vanhouttei is a deciduous shrub with flat clusters of white blossoms that cover the plant like a bridal wreath, hence its common name of bridal wreath spirea. This large, sprawling shrub can grow to 8 feet tall with a 7-foot to 10-foot spread. Used as focal point in the light shade part of a garden, the delicate white blossoms are stunning.

Buddleja davidii, or butterfly bush, is a fast and easy grower in full sun or light shade and produces tight clusters of purple, orange, red or yellow florets that are lightly scented. As the name implies, it attracts butter-

ooking closely at what makes the flowers of some plants outstanding and beautiful is the way in which the flower grows in clusters, rather than an individual bloom. The overall effect of these cluster flowers lends a look of a bouquet to the plant and the plants come in a wide variety of colors, fragrances, sizes and growing needs.

Popular in foothill gardens is the Salvia clevelandii, Cleveland sage. The highly aromatic shrub has clusters of tubular flowers in shades of lavender to dark purple. Flowering in spring through summer, the Cleveland sage thrives in full sun and requires little water once it is established.

A springtime favorite is the magnificent hydrangea species that adds so much substance and color to our landscapes. This fast-growing shrub can reach 6 feet tall and has a rounded cap of lacy looking blooms that come in colors of red, pink, blue or white with small flowers clustered into small bouquets. The hydrangea likes morning sun but give it afternoon shade.

There are several varieties of hydrangea, each with different pruning requirements; it is always safe to prune out dead or weaker stems after the bloom period is over.

Plumbago species has phlox-like, somewhat sticky flowers of sky blue or white on sprawling branch ends. This plant, a native of South Africa, can tolerate heat but it does need well-draining soil. It can grow to 10 feet tall and 10 feet wide so prune it back to control its shape and size.

• Your grown children — Just as you talk to your parents about their estate plans, you’ll want to discuss the same topic with your own grown children. Let them know who you have named as a durable power of attorney, what’s in your last will and testament and whether you’ve established a living trust. If you’re already working with a financial advisor and an estate planning professional, make sure your children know how to contact these individuals. Of course, you don’t have to confine your communications to estate plans; if you want to help your children financially, such as loaning them money for a down payment on a home, let them know.

The art of kindness would be a nice ‘new normal’ “A kind word is like a spring day.”

S

o says an old Russian proverb. As we transition from spring to summer this month, many — possibly most — of us will be phasing our lives back into society at large.

And what a large world it is! Filled with adaptations intended to allow the public to resume “life as usual.” This is certainly true in the world of arts and entertainment, not to mention pubs, bars and restaurants.

Unmasking your compassion As California follows the rest of the nation in relaxing mask mandates (on June 15, as of this printing), there will be some confusion. There are those who will fling off their fabric masks with abandon. And there will be those who will want to keep their masks on — and who will wish everyone else would, too.

How should we handle these awkward situations as they arise?

Interestingly, one answer is found in the poetic arts.

In 1895, poet Mary T. Lathrop wrote: Pray, don’t find fault with the man that limps, Or stumbles along the road.

Unless you have worn the moccasins he wears, Or stumbled beneath the same load.

There may be tears in his soles that hurt Though hidden away from view.

The burden he bears placed on your back May cause you to stumble and fall, too.

Don’t sneer at the man who is down today Unless you have felt the same blow That caused his fall or felt the shame That only the fallen know.

You may be strong, but still the blows That were his, unknown to you in the same way, May cause you to stagger and fall, too.

Don’t be too harsh with the man that sins.

Or pelt him with words, or stone, or disdain.

Unless you are sure you have no sins of your own, And it’s only wisdom and love that your heart contains.

For you know if the tempter’s voice Should whisper as soft to you,

Remember to walk a mile in his moccasins And remember the lessons of humanity taught to you by your elders.

We will be known forever by the tracks we leave In other people’s lives, our kindnesses and generosity.

Take the time to walk a mile in his moccasins.

This poem, titled “Judge Softly,” was written during the last decades of the American Indian Wars as a plea for peace and understanding among people who were passionately fighting for their freedoms. It was embraced by “cowboys and Indians” alike.

Those earlier generations realized that compassion is the starting place for healing a great nation.

Escallonia spp. are hardy evergreen shrubs that are a nice addition to foothill gardens with masses of pink or white flowers. It thrives in full sun except in very hot climates, where it needs partial shade. Escallonia work well as screens or hedges and can be pruned to keep it clean looking.

Loropetalum Chinense “Razzleberri,” or fringe flower, is a fun addition to the garden with lush copper to burgundy foliage that ages to olive green, accented by bright raspberry-colored fringe flowers. This showy, fragrant shrub can grow to 6 feet tall in full sun or light shade and multiple plants can be trained as a hedge. Fringe flower needs rich, well-grained soil and regular water.

The goal is to bring people together again, not to divide them into various castes. No one should be made to feel inferior because of a virus that nobody wanted in the first place.

s we approach the halfway mark of 2021, I am truly impressed, not only by this region’s businesses community, but also by the support of local residents who have gathered together in support of regional businesses. We have seen more and more groups arise on social media – the influencers – that are actively promoting local businesses because they CARE and do not want to see businesses suffer any more than they already have. If you are one of the local influencers in “buy local” thought, we want to express our appreciation for your support of local businesses.

In preparation for our first live Chamber events in over a year, our Board of Directors teamed up and called our members to touch base with them individually. While some members were unable to speak directly to us, many spent significant time with us as we explained our plans for future events. And speaking of live - our Chamber was thrilled to host our very first LIVE mixer in over 18 months in May at the beautiful Cielo Estate Winery in Shingle Springs, CA. Co-hosted by the renowned Thiel Real Estate, this mixer featured delicious local wine selections paired with individually wrapped charcuterie boxes. We overheard many members state they did not realize the depth and beauty of this local estate winery – and we could not agree more! Our members did not disappoint either; they showed up in terrific numbers with a renewed excitement about our community!

June (Fridays to Sundays) – CP Rotary Club Observatory From 8:30pm to 10:30 pm, weather permitting, the observatory is open to the public on weekend evenings. Trained docents show the many celestial wonders of the universe through two 14-inch telescopes. he Shingle Springs/Cameron Park Chamber of Commerce, originally formed as the Shingle Springs Business and Professional Association, Inc. in December 1967. It works to promote the area, encouraging business and industrial investment to provide the foundation for a solid community.

The Chamber’s mission statement reflects this premise: “To advocate, promote and preserve the quality of life in our Chamber Community, by means of a strong, healthy and diverse business community.”
