Her daughter Taylor Hughes has been dancing and competing in hip hop since she was 8. Taylor’s older cousin Ashley Christensen competed for Oak Ridge in years prior and now Taylor follows in her footsteps. This is her first year competing as a freshman for the Oak Ridge team. “The opportunity to compete at USA Dance Nationals in Anaheim was the ultimate honor. Many don’t realize the years of commitment and sacrifice each dancer makes to reach this level of competition,” Taylor told Village Life. “The reality of winning a national championship and also making school history is an experience I’ll never forget. Going to Disneyland the next day was magical.”

erence Andersen said teaching etiquette to his Lakeview Elementary School fourth-graders was not his idea. It came from watching other teachers attempt to teach basic manners through lunches, during which the students would dress up and eat together with their class. Preliminary engineers’ reports on the annual assessments for El Dorado Hills Landscape and Lighting Assessment Districts were approved at this month’s EDH Community Services District Board of Directors meeting, bringing changes to yearly fees for some residents. Calculated by DTA Assessment Engineers, the assessments were distributed from the district’s operating budget. The staff report indicates that for fiscal year 2023, 10 LLADs are at maximum, nine are assessed lower than last year and six have modest increases. Four LLADs in particular were assessed significant increases — Francisco Oaks LLAD, Highland Hills 3 LLAD, North Commercial Boulevard LLAD and Carson Creek LLAD. The Francisco Oaks increase from $184 to $471 was due to much-needed repairs to ■

This is Coach Erin Vasconcellos’ 12th year coaching the team and the 10th year Oak Ridge has competed at the USA Dance Nationals. “I am proud of their perseverance and taking first place for the first time,” she said of her dancers. This year’s dance team is made up of 11 girls, freshmen to seniors. The experience the girls bring to the squad varies, Vasconcellos explained, with some dancing for a year and others most of their young lives. The team performs a wide variety of different styles of dance — hip hop, jazz, lyrical, interpretational — with dancers most often entertaining the crowds during Oak Ridge football and basketball halftime shows. “Winning first place in Hip Hop was definitely a night to remember,” shared junior Grace Reimer. “I wouldn’t want to have done it without these amazing people on this team. It was so rewarding from all of our hard work and resilience we put in this season. We feel honored to be given this award and make Oak Ridge Dance Team history.”

the asphalt trail along Francisco Drive. “The roots have lifted the asphalt so it just looks like a bunch of rumble strips,” clarified CSD Parks Superintendent Ryan Kukkola, referring to them as tripping hazards. “Those areas are marked right now, but that doesn’t protect us from any type of liability issues.” The staff report deems this as a one-time increase with the fiscal year 2024 assessment anticipated to drop back down to fiscal year 2022 range. A bump from $771 to $1,142 is proposed for Highland Hills 3 LLAD to replenish deferred maintenance reserves needed to repair and replace a failing fence. Board member Heidi Hannaman floated the idea of giving the fence back to Highland Hills residents to which Loewen noted that a similar concept was previously suggested but rejected by Green Valley Hills residents. The North Commercial Boulevard LLAD assessment rose from $835 to $1,424 for unexpected repairs to an irrigation leak under El Dorado Hills Boulevard. In addition, the existing 19 street light poles lining El Dorado Hills Boulevard between the Highway 50 intersection and Serrano Parkway will be upgraded to LED lighting. This is expected to be a one-time increase as well. Carson Creek LLAD has a proposed increase from $16 to $153 to re-align the assessment as full operation of Heritage Park commences. CSD General Manager Kevin Loewen also pointed out that corrections are forthcoming regarding an error in the number of streetlights in Bass Lake A and consistency of square footage in Bass Lake B brought to light by public comment submitted prior to the meeting. However, Hannaman took issue with one LLAD not highlighted. Personally invested in Windsor Point Park, she expressed concern with its assessment increase from $41.54 to $72.42. “Those residents were basically promised something around $50. That’s over $50,” she said. “These are major adjustments for families to have to make.” Loewen confirmed that the Windsor Point Park assessment is proposed at its maximum, citing the expense of planter beds. In addition, Kukkola explained that ongoing maintenance refurbishment and bark replacement has proven expensive. “The bottom line is 300 yards of bark is quite expensive over time,” he said, adding that its proximity to a school causes it to suffer bouts of vandalism. “Yes, it’s a small park but it’s a highly used park.” The proposed assessments were approved in a 4-1 vote with Hannaman dissenting. A public hearing will be held at 6:30 p.m. June 9 in the Norm Rowett Pavilion, 1021 Harvard Way in El Dorado Hills. Interested parties will have an opportunity to protest the report either in writing or orally. If the board subsequently determines that a majority protest does not exist and no modifications to the engineer’s report are necessary, the board may adopt the resolution and file the assessment roll with the El Dorado County Auditor-Controller’s Office. Fiscal year 2022-23 annual assessments are proposed in the following LLADs: Stonegate, Oak Tree, Oakridge, Green Valley Hills, La Cresta, Crescent Ridge, Lake Forest, Francisco Oaks, Marina Hills, Highland Hills Unit 3, Wild Oaks, Silva Valley, Bass Lake A & B, Creekside Greens, Roadway LLAD, Highland Hills Units 1/2/4, Promontory, Hollow Oaks, Highland View-Highland Hills-Sterlingshire, North Commercial Blvd., Hawk View, Valley View LLAD, Bell Ranch, Lake Forest Park, Windsor Point Park, Carson Creek Park, Bass Lake North and Saratoga Estates. BUSY ATM theft goes sideways SANDWICH the area,” sheriff’s officials note in a Facebook post. “EDSO patrol arrived on scene at 4:48 a.m. and could not locate the suspect vehicle in the immediate area. The ATM ... was left behind in the parking lot.”’ No money was taken from the ATM. The vehicle used in the botched theft was found shortly after the incident, dumped on nearby Valley View Parkway. Officials confirmed the pickup involved was stolen. As of press time, investigators had no suspects known or in custody. The investigation is ongoing.

This year student performers added to the elegant ambiance. “I have been blessed with tremendous school administrators who have supported these ideas and have given me a free rein to conduct these ‘dinners’ after school hours,” Andersen said.
