Some 300 volunteers took to Placerville’s parks and trails April 30 as part of the annual Rise and Shine Community Clean-up Day. SOUTH LAKE TAHOE — El Dorado County District 5 Supervisor candidate Kenny Curtzwiler is taking on Barton Memorial Hospital in a defamation suit.

In June 2020 Kenny Curtzwiler Jen Dawn, who is not an employee of Barton, made a Facebook post about Curtzwiler, which, according to the complaint, “included defamatory and damaging allegations.”

Aiello convicted of serial child molestation News release

An El Dorado County jury has convicted Jeffrey Keith Aiello, 59, of 10 counts of child molestation and one count of kidnapping.

Aiello, a resident of Pilot Hill, molested six children between 1999 and 2015, according to a Jeffrey Keith Aiello news release from the county District Attorney’s Office.

During the jury trial each of his victims testified to being molested by Aiello, a person they said they trusted.

Gary Swasey graduated from California State University, Sacramento with a bachelor’s degree before teaching in El Dorado County as an elementary school teacher for 27 years.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman. After he retired, he was a volunteer campground host for Sonoma County and the State of California for 15 years.

Gary is survived by his wife Bobbie; children Brian, Andrew, Matthew and Heidi; seven grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Remembrance can be sent to Snowline Hospice and Arbor Day Foundation.

According to campaign organizers, among those endorsing Barlow is Placerville Police Chief Joseph Wren. In a letter to Barlow, Wren states, “I believe that once elected you will exercise a prudent judicial temperament and apply the law in a fair and balanced way, staying clear of judicial activism.”

Barlow, according to campaign officials. “Lesley has been appearing in my courtroom regularly since September of 2017,” Day states. “I know her abilities well. As an advocate, she is strong and effective. She is respectful of all the parties and exercises her role with care. These are qualities you want in a judicial officer.”

Slossberg, Barlow’s challenger, has been a superior court commissioner for the county since November 2020. He previously served as the family law facilitator and self-help attorney for the court and as the attorney for Live Violence Free.

Capitol honors for El Dorado County heroes Mountain Democrat staff On May 2 the names of 36 California officers killed in the line of duty were added to the California Peace Officers Memorial at the State Capitol grounds in Sacramento.

Among those honored was El Dorado County sheriff ’s deputy Brian Ishmael, killed in October 2019 responding to a report of robbery at an illegal marijuana farm in south county Not held in 2020 or 2021 due to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, California Peace Officers’ Memorial ceremonies have otherwise been held annually since 1977.

Also enlisted on the monument is Galt police officer Harminder Grewal, who suffered fatal injuries in a head-on collision while on his way to assist with the Caldor Fire.

Next year Cameron Park resident and Elk Grove motor officer Ty Lenehan’s name will go up on the monument. He was struck by a wrong-way driver on his way to work in January.

ith the state government of California sitting on a budget surplus that exceeds $50 billion, Sacramento politicians can’t bring themselves to return a few dollars to middle-class taxpayers.

While the cost of Jon Coupal consumer goods and services is rising rapidly, due mostly to feckless government policies, it is the cost of gasoline that truly sticks in the craw of average Californians. Conservatives in the Legislature, mostly Republicans, have accused the Democrats of intentionally running out the clock on providing gas tax relief before an automatic increase goes into effect May 1.

That accusation is well-founded.

Nearly a year ago Republicans in the state Senate pushed for a “gas tax holiday,” including a full suspension on state gas tax collection for the current fiscal year. The suspension could have easily been backfilled by the state’s overflowing general fund, which would protect transportation funding.

That’s too bad because a one year suspension of the gas tax would have reduced the cost of fuel by 51.1 cents per gallon, providing instant tax relief.

It is also an elegantly simple solution that would have been easy for state bureaucrats to administer.

While the majority party in the Legislature has slow-walked gas tax relief, Gov. Gavin Newsom at least put the issue on the table by introducing some gas price relief in his original January budget as well as his March State of the State speech.

But legislative leaders in both houses rejected his proposal, falsely claiming that transportation projects wouldn’t be fully funded.

Rather, they said they would prefer some sort of direct payments to taxpayers but weren’t clear on who would get the money.

Which brings us to today, exactly where we were a year ago except that now, both the price of gas as well as the gas tax are higher.

It is no surprise that a recent PPIC poll reveals that record percentages of voters believe they are overtaxed. What is surprising, however, is why a majority of our elected representatives in Sacramento are turning a blind eye to the problem and not taking any meaningful action.

If past is prologue, political foot-dragging on tax relief can be very dangerous.

Letters to the Editor ‘Magic’ water rights EDITOR: ear 1987: There was a water meter moratorium in El Dorado County and new building virtually stopped. SOFAR was no longer being discussed. The Realtor told me sadly that the building boom for this area was over. Yay, said I — I was looking for a small, stable, beautiful, country area with good medical, schools, recreation, etc., and it was all here. I bought, I built (with a well) and fell in love with Placerville.

Five years later my well went dry but the El Dorado Irrigation District must have found those magical water rights that are referred to in these drought days because Serrano went in and Bridlewood and, and, and ... and now we are facing water rationing as even more developments are planned. Those water rights must indeed be magical with the assurance of never running dry like my well did.

It is beyond comprehension, it is incredible and it is pure stupidity for the Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors to even consider trusting EID when you review the history. And yet our rates are going up regularly.

In short, there is not the water to support poorly planned developments, nor the roads, probably not even the sewers. The county is fast losing what most people come here to find. Bad decisions by planning and the board must be stopped.

ho’s Gilead?

Scott Taylor fears “the wave of repressive measures and laws” in red states regarding abortion, gay rights and transgenderism might just be the “road to Gilead” (Mountain Democrat, April 29). My question: Who’s Gilead?

Mr. Taylor is alluding to Margaret Atwood’s 1985 novel and subsequent TV series “The Handmaid’s Tale.” In this futuristic dystopian novel the United States government and military has been overthrown by religious fanatics who establish the Republic of Gilead, a highly restrictive, patriarchal, autocratic state in which women lose their basic

rights. The tale is told by Offred, one of the few remaining fertile women, classified as a “handmaid,” who is forced to produce children for the “commanders” or the ruling elite. I suppose it is not impossible to believe that someday, something other than the United States might exist on this continent, but I think the smart money would be betting on a zombie apocalypse. But I digress.

The Parental Rights in Education Act in Florida prohibits discussing “gender identity” in grades K-3, deeming it to be both age and developmentally inappropriate. The Alabama Vulnerable Child Compassion and Protection Act criminalizes the use of puberty blockers and hormones with people under the age of 19. We are talking about mostly minors here. The Texas Heartbeat Act bans abortion after the detection of a fetal heartbeat, usually occurring at about the sixth week of pregnancy.

Of course, the left is up in arms. And, true to form, as illustrated by Mr. Taylor’s letter, the left portrays itself and its constituency as the victims of oppression, being denied access to abortion or “gender-affirming treatment.” But is talking about “gender identity” to elementary school students not the first stages of brainwashing? Is not developing a gender “transition plan” in schools for students struggling with their sexual identity, even without the parents’ knowledge, psychological manipulation of the worst kind? Sounds like Gilead to me. And is not the Texas Heartbeat Act preferable to the Vermont “no-limits abortion bill,” which allows unlimited, unrestricted, unregulated abortion on-demand, including full-term abortions. Imagine a full-term baby being aborted at nine months and then discarded with the day’s medical waste. Is this not also Gilead?

Mr. Taylor calls on the left to be the party of “practical solutions” rather than the party of “repressive laws.” But for too many of us in this country, the left is the source of our problems and an unlikely source of any solutions. Like the Republic of Gilead, the left is elitist and autocratic in nature. It redefines reality into whatever image best suits it — its politics on gender, reproductive rights, marriage being prime examples — and then imposes this new reality on the populace, further dividing the country. Welcome to Gilead.

Scoop on the ruling against airline mask mandate

T

here has been all kinds of hooha about the federal judge who lifted the mask mandate for transportation. Fliers cheered, Uber riders have been happy and train riders undoubtedly have been happy.

Not so lucky are New Michael York subway riders where the city still has a mask mandate.

Shoplifters and other criminal types are still wearing masks, which is why I never thought it was a good idea when banks went along with the mask mandate.

U.S District Judge Kathryn Kimball Miselle, of the Tampa, Fla., Division issued a 59-page ruling against the Centers for Disease Control’s transportation mask mandate.

The ruling was stuffed with case precedents justifying nearly every sentence.

The case against President Joe Biden (and other officials) and the CDC was brought by two individuals

for whom the mask mandate produces debilitating anxiety attacks. Also included as a plaintiff is the Health Freedom Defense Fund.

Eventually, the plaintiffs dropped Biden as a defendant.

One day after taking the oath of office Jan. 21, 2021, Biden issued Raffety an executive order directing executive officials to wear masks on various forms of transportation. Two weeks later on Feb. 3, 2021, the CDC published the mask mandate for transportation and transportation hubs.

It issued the mandate without following the Administrative Procedures Act, stating, “It would be impractical and contrary to public health to delay the mandate.”

“The mandate did not differentiate between kinds of masks based on their efficacy at blocking transmission,” the judge notes.

Failure to wear a mask could have a person removed and result in a fine.

The mandate excludes children younger than 2 and persons with a disability that prevents them from safely wearing a mask. It also excludes a person who must wear an oxygen mask; or is actively eating, drinking or taking medication; or to catch their breath if feeling winded; or to communicate with someone who is hearing impaired.

That’s a lot of exceptions. Anxiety is not a recognized exception.

“The Administrative Procedures Act requires that reviewing courts ‘hold unlawful and set aside agency action’ that is ‘arbitrary’ and ‘capricious; ‘in excess of statutory jurisdiction, authority, or limitations, or short of statutory right; or that was issued ‘without observance of procedure required by law,’” Judge Mizelle wrote.

CDC Director Rochelle Walensky relied on the section of the Public Health Services Act of 1944 for authority. That act “empowers the CDC director to promulgate regulations aimed at ‘identifying, isolating and destroying diseases.’”

“For purposes of carrying out this act and enforcing such regulations, the [CDC] may provide for such

inspection, destruction, fumigation, disinfection, sanitation, pest extermination, destruction of animals or articles found to be so infected or contaminated as to be sources of dangerous infection to human beings or other measures, as in his judgement may be necessary,” the act states, according to Section 264.

The judge wrote, “Since Congress enacted it in 1944, the Public Health Services Act has been ‘generally limited to quarantining infected individuals and prohibiting the import or sale of animals known to transmit disease.’

“It has rarely been invoked,” the ruling continues. “Within the past two years, the CDC has found within Section 264(a) the power to shut down the cruise ship industry, stop landlords from evicting tenants who have not paid their rent, and require persons using public conveyances to wear masks. The courts have concluded the first two of the measures exceeded the CDC’s statutory authority under Section 264.”

On April 30 the El Dorado Hills Saloon held a watch party for the University of San Diego baseball game where a former baseball player and friend of Bazor plays. The saloon donated 20% of food and drink sales.

With so much to cheer about this season, even the dads got in on the action and created their very own DADzone; outfitted in Hawaiian shirts, they keep the fans engaged and the team’s spirits high.

Larson and Oscar Poort’s first season as co-head coaches ended before it began. After tryouts in 2020 COVID hit and Oak Ridge was forced to shut down its sports program. Playing time last year was cut short once again due to COVID and the high school season was capped at only league games. Planning Commission to hear cannabis cultivation Eric Jaramishian Staff writer The El Dorado County Planning Commission will have a hearing next week to decide if commercial cannabis cultivation will become a reality in the county.

Cybele Holdings CEO Lee Tannenbaum will go before the Planning Commission Thursday, May 12 with his proposed south county operation.

“I’m still cautiously optimistic but things are finally looking up,” Tannenbaum said.

Cybele Holdings will be the first cannabis cultivation farm if the Planning Commission approves of

Tannenbaum’s conditional use and operating permits.

“It is a very difficult system to get through, and I am grateful that I’m being given the opportunity to get in front of the Planning Commission,” Tannenbaum said.

The business would sit on 5.5 acres on Freshwater Lane, about 2 miles south of the Sand Ridge Road intersection.

Tannenbaum, who said he was the first to apply for a cultivation permit in the county, noted he has invested approximately $2 million on buildouts and the application process.

The Shingle Springs resident said he waited more than two years to get his cultivation application OK’d by the

Sheriffs Office, the step keeping the business from moving forward.

Additionally, a questionnaire in the application process has caused a dispute between interested growers and the county for being “too invasive,” which even lead to the El Dorado County Growers Alliance to seek legal action against the county.

“It’s too difficult for normal people to get through and that’s the problem with the current system,” Tannenbaum told the Mountain Democrat.

In a letter to the Planning Commission, Tannenbaum states that Cybele Holdings will provide new jobs to the county, have active security on the property, preserve agricultural land and pay cannabis cultivation taxes to

the county.

“Cybele not only meets all of the county’s excessive regulatory requirements, they will improve the conditions in their neighborhood while mitigating any potential impacts of its operation,” continues Tannenbaum’s message to planning commissioners.

Tannenbaum previously told the Mountain Democrat that aspiring county growers are looking into putting together a ballot measure for the November election that would make it easier for growers to cultivate cannabis in the county, including changing the definition of ownership when growers apply for cultivation, one issue the growers had with the application process.

Tahoe agencies preparing for busy tourism season Miranda Jacobson Tahoe Daily Tribune SOUTH LAKE TAHOE — With summer around the corner and a lineup of events on the horizon in communities all around Lake Tahoe, agencies everywhere are preparing for a large number of visitors this season.

As more visitors and businesses centered around tourism come to the basin, the Center for Responsible Travel and their partners are going to be guiding regional agencies through the process of creating the basin’s first stewardship plan, Destination Stewardship. The plan aims to create an approach to tourism management that will focus on environmental, cultural, social and economic stability.

“It is a strong strategy for bringing people together, engaging stakeholders, supporting economic stability, protecting natural and cultural amenities, and improving access for all,” said Tahoe Regional Planning Agency Public Information Officer Jeff Cowen. “One of Destination Stewardship’s core goals is ensuring communities, land managers, and tourism agencies are wholly invested in the decisionmaking and planning process.”

Work toward a stewardship plan began in 2020 at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic when TRPA brought together land managers,

visitors authorities, nonprofits and other recreation based in sustainability.

“The successes that have come out of that coordination will continue to build this summer with ambassadors working at recreation hot spots, additional garbage management and volunteer litter cleanups, and coordinated messaging through regional marketing campaigns that encourage transit use and off-peak travel or recreation site use,” Cowen said.

While work on the plan is done throughout the summer, CEO and President of the South Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority Carol Chaplin and her team are preparing for visitors while also keeping COVID in mind.

“We continue to monitor not only COVID variants, but other economic pressures on travel such as gas prices and compressed air service schedules,” said Chaplin. “With that said, our lodging partners are reporting strong interest and bookings. With a robust event schedule, we hope that helps attract visitors, however, we are also promoting mid-week stays to fill nights typically a bit softer than weekends.”

Multiple summer concerts and events are set to kick off soon in the basin, including the 2022 Lake Tahoe Summer Concert Series, Live at Lakeview, and the Heavenly Village

Summer Concert Series, and agencies are expecting the same, if not more visitors than last year.

“You have to keep in mind that wildfire impacts were significant toward the end of the 2021 summer season and we certainly hope that’s not the case this year,” said Chaplin.

Fire safety preparation is set to begin now, with the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit encouraging those who visit and live in the area to understand what a red flag warning is (days with strong winds and low humidity) along with preparing homes and properties.

“Remember, it’s not a matter of ‘if ’ the next wildfire will occur, it’s a matter of ‘when’,” said U.S. Forest Service PIO Lisa Herron.

Wildfire prevention begins with knowing where burning is prohibited.

Locations include Desolation Wilderness, Meiss Country or any other backcountry location; beaches or picnic areas; or anywhere else in the forest. Propane appliances with on/off valves are allowed with a valid permit.

“Summer always brings heavy uses of beaches and hiking or biking trails,” said Chaplin. “Outdoor recreation is very much in demand. Our iconic Emerald Bay will continue to be an attraction.”

Other places Chaplin expects to be highly impacted this summer include The Shops at Heavenly, the gondola and areas for mountain activities, with the busiest times for businesses beginning in late June and continuing into mid-September.

With the housing market slowing down around the basin due to rising interest rates on homes and lack of inventory, and occupancy rates going

up, it’s important for agencies to continue to build a balance for the tourists and residents this summer.

“Tourism is a $5.1 billion industry in the Lake Tahoe Basin,” said Chaplin.

“Our community members have built their lives and careers around visitor spending. But, as we move forward celebrating this industry, we also want to make sure our visitors help us in our efforts toward destination stewardship that preserves our wonderful environment, assets and activities. There is a collaborative effort toward this initiative that involves not only the visitor bureaus, but land management agencies, the TRPA, Tahoe Fund and more.”

Promoting travel to the area is important to Nevada Lt. Governor Lisa Burkhead, who is the tourism chair as well.

“It’s really important for me in this role to promote all of the incredible outdoor spaces that we have in our state, including Tahoe, which happens to be one of my childhood favorites,” said Burkhead.

Burkhead’s advice to any visitors coming to the area is to prepare ahead of time and stay organized with scheduling, due to the large amount of traffic that can build up in the basin, especially on the South Lake side.

She also recommends being present in the moment while traveling, and really appreciating the outdoor space.

“There were a lot of challenges during the pandemic, but some of the positive things that came out of it was this sense of really appreciating our outdoor space,” said Burkhead. “And we certainly have a lot of incredible outdoor spaces in our beautiful state, and Lake Tahoe comes to the top of the list for me.”

Invasive species removal resumes in Tahoe marshes Tahoe Daily Tribune SOUTH LAKE TAHOE — Project work to eradicate invasive plants has resumed at Taylor Creek and Tallac Creek marshes in South Lake Tahoe.

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit, began the project in November by removing vegetation from the marsh in preparation to install underwater bottom barriers in the marshes adjacent to Baldwin and Kiva beaches this spring, TRPA officials stated when the project began. Bottom barriers are mats laid underwater to deprive weeds of sunlight they need to grow.

The barriers help control and eradicate invasive plant species such as Eurasian watermilfoil and will be in place through 2025.

Invasive plants affect wildlife habitat, outcompete native plants and can impact recreation and water quality.

Beachgoers and other recreationists

should avoid the marsh areas where work is taking place and be aware of underwater hazards posed by the slippery bottom barriers and metal rebar stakes.

The Taylor Creek and Tallac Creek watersheds have been damaged by historical grazing, recreation infrastructure, construction and erosion, according to TRPA. The degraded condition has promoted the introduction of aquatic invasive weeds to the creeks and marshes that threatens native species and alters the marshes’ natural ecosystem.

Controlling invasive plants is the first phase in a larger, comprehensive Taylor and Tallac Creeks Restoration Project, according to the agency. Both aquatic invasive species control and creek restoration are components of the Lake Tahoe Environmental Improvement Program, one of the nation’s most ambitious landscapescale restoration programs involving more than 80 organizations around the Tahoe Basin.

he Pine Hill Preserve is centered around Green Valley Road in western El Dorado County. It stretches from the South Fork of the American River in the north, southward in Cameron Park near Highway 50. The California Native Plant Society recognizes more than 740 plant species found in this area, which makes the preserve one of the most floristically diverse areas of the world.

The PHP was established in 2001 and is home to eight rare plant species. Four are endemic, which means they don’t grow anywhere else in the world, one is nearly endemic and the others are found in a few places elsewhere. This assemblage of rare plants is part of a unique community that only grows in the Gabbro soils.

The Pine Hill Gabbro formation began 175 million years ago when a volcano on the Pacific plate was pushed into the continental plate (a process known as plate tectonics). The soil that formed from this intrusion is termed Gabbro soil. The U.S. Geological Survey has described the soils as the “Rescue series,” named after the nearby Rescue community. In the unique combinations of the soils and climate, with adaptations over time, these plants have become constrained to this area.

How are the plants protected?

“The Pine Hill Preserve rare plants are protected by the different designations of the lands that are set aside for their conservation and by management of their habitats,” explained Graciela Hinshaw, Pine Hill manager with the Bureau of Land Management. “These land designations include the BLM Pine Hill Area of Critical Environmental Concern and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife Pine Hill Ecological Reserve.”

Hinshaw also pointed out the laws and ordinances that help to protect these rare plants, “Laws under the Endangered Species Act and the California Endangered Species Act provide for the federally and state listed species conservation and recovery,” Hinshaw said, “and there are ordinances in El Dorado County ... to protect the Gabbro soil rare plants through mitigation requirements.

“Ten federal, state and local agencies and private, nonprofit organizations work together under a cooperative management agreement to determine species conservation needs and develop strategies to preserve the Gabbro plants and habitats in perpetuity,” she continued. “The BLM, the CDFW and the EDC hold ownership of the different parcels that compose the PHP system. All the CMA partners participate providing technical advice, informing about regulatory requirements, conducting volunteer and education/ outreach work, helping to manage habitats, acquiring lands to set aside for protection and funding these and other management related activities.”

Stebbins’ morning glory is a vining, trailing perennial with large, trumpet-shaped white flowers and highly dissected leaves — the only morning glory to exhibit this characteristic. It is found only in the Pine Hill Preserve and is listed as an endangered or threatened plant by the federal government.

The California Native Plant Society also helps care for the land and works to help others to gain appreciation and care for the unique area that hosts the rare and endangered plants.

The CNPS El Dorado Chapter recently provided free guided walking plant tours to point out unique plants at the Pine Hill Preserve.

Shingle Springs resident Greg Jaeck marveled at the beauty around him during the tour. “There is so much uniqueness and variety of plants in such a short stretch,” he shared. “I’m glad there was foresight of saving this area.”

Wildfire concern Due to the increasing number of wildfires in the state and county, Hinshaw said steps are taken to protect the preserve. “One

of the main activities on PHP managed lands is the reduction of the fuels load through prescribed fire and mechanical treatments, to enhance habitat for the rare plants and help to prevent catastrophic wildfire events in areas immediately adjacent to the PHP,” she explained.

But, ironically, sometimes a little fire isn’t a bad thing for some plants. Debra Ayres, vice president of the CNPS El Dorado Chapter, described how some plants, such as the federally endangered endemic Pine Hill Flannelbush (Fremontodendron decumbens), whose seeds are spread by Harvester ants, germinates only after a fire.

They don’t know how old the few flowering plants at the preserve are or how long it takes for a seedling plant to mature and produce flowers. Both said they hope to see the young plants mature and flower during their lifetime.

Although this is a general meeting for the CNPS El Dorado Chapter, the public is invited. Meetings usually include a showand-tell about one or more seasonally notable plants, announcements of upcoming chapter events and projects and a speaker presentation.

It’s a great way to mingle and meet interesting new friends who share an interest in plants and the natural places of the surrounding foothills.

More resources To further help the public learn more about the county’s native plants, the CNPS El Dorado Chapter recently held a grand opening of The Nature Nook at the Placerville Library that features four distinct gardens — Shrub Shelter, Pollinator Garden, Oak Tree Canopy and Native Meadow. All provide ideas for landscaping with native plants for your own garden and feature how they help preserve the local ecosystems. The CNPS has native plant sales twice a year.

University of California Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners of El Dorado County have great native plant and garden ideas at the Sherwood Demonstration Garden, 6699 Campus Drive in Placerville.

Contrary to the popular belief you should plant in the spring time, Master gardener Gail Fulbeck explained it is best to plant native plants in the fall because all the subsequent rain helps the roots get established. Then, in the spring, they are ready to grow. Once native plants are established they don’t need much water and adapt well to the climate.

e flee our urban environs by way of traffic-laden highways. Just beyond the city life, the landscapes of Tuolumne County are pastoral. We see wideopen spaces neatly hemmed by fences, carefully rowed orchards and vineyards and cattle lazily munching tender green shoots. Slow rolling valleys lead to seasonally snowcapped peaks and the promise of Yosemite.

Just beyond, the road begins to climb into undulating Sierra foothills. The arms of craggy oaks, beside the velvet and golden way seem a welcoming embrace.

Outdoor recreation abounds in Yosemite. Autumn to spring the complement of cyclical activities — fall foliage and wildflower hikes to snowboarding and skiing — is Yosemite at its finest. Ice skating at Curry Village beneath the splendor of Half Dome and Glacier Point followed by the warmth of an outdoor fire ring is a winter dream. Seasonal waterfalls are brought roaring back to life by winter snows and rain. Any visit must include a hike to Yosemite Falls. Stream-fed from high in the Desolation Wilderness, it is the highest waterfall in the United States.

Seasonally accessible by car, Glacier Point, directly above Camp Curry, is often engulfed by summer tourists.

Inspiring views of the valley are well worth the drive or hike. However, Glacier Point Road will be closed to all traffic in 2022 to rehabilitate and improve the road. There will be 30-minute delays in 2023. The only access to Glacier Point will be via the Four Mile, Panorama and Pohono trails, which are all strenuous hikes.

During the snow season, a one-day out-and-back excursion is for only the most skilled cross-country skiers.

Millions throng to see the splendor of Yosemite’s granite cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and giant sequoias. During late spring and throughout the summer months, Yosemite is teeming with guests from around the world.

After summer, the visitor tide ebbs and the park begins an unhurried progression into a recurring hibernation. Off-season, fewer cars on the roads in, out and around are definitely a big plus. The availability of lodging throughout the region is much more attainable.

Lodging possibilities range from grand dame of the park, The Ahwahnee Hotel, to the family oriented Yosemite Valley Lodge and Curry Village, which includes motel rooms, cabins with and without baths and unheated canvas tents. Checking online will provide additional information about accommodations, amenities and rates, plus the availability of wonderfully priced packages. Plan early to give yourself the best options. Horsetail Falls Without the discussion of granite, you would not have a complete portrait of Desolation Wilderness.

Granite is everywhere, from relatively flat smooth polished bedrock terrain upon which you can easily walk — creatively labeled “Sierra Sidewalk” — to the peaks and cliffs and masses of rough jagged rocks and well-rounded car-sized boulders, called erratics, having been chaotically strewn around the landscape by retreating glaciers. It is an open space in which you may hike and climb to your heart’s content — truly a playground for adults as well as children.

Adding to the inspiring sights are the sounds of this mountain wonderland.

Just listen to the soft sounds of gentle breezes wafting through the pine boughs and the louder gusting winds whistling through the high rocks and peaks.

Listen to the water as it tumbles along in babbling brooks or falls swiftly with roaring force down steep cliffs.

Listen carefully for the sounds of birds and other animals that live here.

Enjoying the experience I also want to introduce you to the experience of engaging solitude while on your Desolation Wilderness hiking adventure.

In order to immerse yourself fully in experiencing solitude, you must intentionally involve all your senses so as to enable your thorough and complete immersion in the wilderness environment.

For this experience to be fulfilling, you essentially need to be by yourself — away from people in a quiet place surrounded by all that is nature. When you see what looks like an opportune place to leave the trail, do so safely. However, since we always advocate hiking with a buddy, I recommend you share the experience with someone who will concentrate on having his/her own solitude experience without intruding on yours.

The Blue Hole

Experiencing the wilderness is akin to celebrating being alive.

Look around, not just glance but see everything and take it all in — the sights of long vistas, lonely vultures floating on air currents high above, and the short views of things close like the ageless rock, blooming flowers and insects feasting on gifts from the flowers.

Take pictures, not just quick snapshots but thoughtfully composed pictures. Be creative. Be artistic. Make as many digital memories as you can to stimulate the recall of special times.

Taking pause to do this will slow your pace, which is a good thing.

Listen carefully to all that is going on around you. Listen for the chirps and calls of the birds, the shrieking warning whistle of the marmot to his kin as you approach his habitat. Enjoy the movement of the water in the streams from its almost soundless babbling to the heavy crashing cascades down steeper slopes. Pause for the almost silent sound of breezes through the trees. Moreover, rejoice in the silence of the wilderness as it allows you to fully experience the solitude of the place you are in.

Feel the gentle breeze cool on one cheek and contrast that with the warmth of the sun on the other cheek. Touch the roughness of the granite, the different kinds of rough from tree bark, the shocking cold of the swiftly moving water in the stream and contrast that with the warm surface water in the stillness of a pond.

Breathe deeply the fresh air of the wilderness (Muir called this the breath of wildness) free of the bad air left behind in the lowlands.

Taste the cold mountain water (filtered water, of course). Food tastes better in the wilderness. That is certainly true of hot chocolate and broth.

Connect by physically engaging the wilderness.

Sense your body adjusting to the hiking challenges of steep irregular terrain and jumping from boulder to rock when making your way through a

deep chasm or crossing a stream. Feel your body appreciate the rest you give it when you stop for a snack or when you soak your feet in a cold snowmelt pool. Sense the feeling of refreshment as you ready yourself to continue. When the hike is over, acknowledge having had a very worthwhile experience as you recognize your feelings of satisfaction and achievement. Even feeling tired after a long day is part of a wilderness experience.

All of which contribute to a heightened sense of accomplishment at the end of the day.

Happiness achieved.

Stress attenuated.

It is not uncommon for wilderness visitors to experience spiritual feelings. Authors describe an awareness that they are in the presence of something greater than themselves and are overcome by the stimulating awesomeness and the sheer vastness of our Desolation Wilderness.

Numerous writers have shared their thoughts and feelings about this kind of connection with the land. In particular, John Muir expressed himself often as he talked about the immersive qualities of the wilderness as you “become one” with the wholeness of the mountains, the day and the experience.

Remember Muir’s invitation: “Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature’s peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop off like autumn leaves. ...

Now with so much more meaning in light of the previous discussion. Muir continues this epistle with a message for our older hikers: “... As age comes on, one source of enjoyment after another is closed, but nature’s sources never fail.”

Notes about planning a visit to Desolation Wilderness Visitors to the Lake Tahoe region who want to experience a

day spent in the real wilderness have several wonderful portals of entry. The main trailheads on the west side of Lake Tahoe (the east side of Desolation Wilderness) on Highway 89 are Eagle Falls, Bayview and Glen Alpine with views of Lake Tahoe along the way. From these you can hike to beautiful places like Eagle Lake, Cascade Falls, Maggie’s Peaks, Velma Lakes and climb Mt. Tallac from which the view of Lake Tahoe is breathtaking.

Trailheads on the south side of Desolation Wilderness off Highway 50 are Echo Lakes and Pyramid Creek (still sometimes referred as the Twin Bridges Trailhead). The Ralston Trailhead is closed until further notice due to the Caldor Fire last fall.

From the Echo Lakes Trailhead you can hike to Lake Aloha and other lakes along the way.

From the Pyramid Creek you can hike up to the base of an awesome waterfalls named Horsetail Falls (or to the top of it).

(Note: This trailhead may not be open at the beginning of the hiking season but is expected to open later on. Check with the U.S. Forest Service).

Still farther around to the west side of Desolation Wilderness are the Twin Lakes and the Rockbound trailheads from Wrights Lake that take you up into granite high country with its long vistas waiting to be explored. The Forest Service expects the forest road to Wrights Lake to be open shortly after the snow melts.

The Lyon’s Creek Trailhead on the way to Wrights Lake is closed until further notice due to the Caldor Fire.

Getting more To get an even greater and more enduring sense of the wilderness, I encourage visitors to backpack in and spend at least one night to experience a wilderness sunset, a night sky full of stars and a glorious sunrise welcoming you to a new day. If possible, I strongly encourage two nights minimum to allow you to expand upon your experience.

Hiking permits: Here is the very latest information available on acquiring permits and parking at the time this article was printed.

However, things are “subject to change” so checking with the Forest Service as the time for your visit nears is a prudent thing to do.

daypacks are once again required. They are available at trailheads. You should fill out the form, tear off the bottom stub and deposit it in the slot in the bottom of the permit box. Then attach the top half to your daypack where it can be easily seen by a ranger.

Overnight permits are required. At the time that this article was printed, about 70% of the available permits to camp overnight in the wilderness backcountry are available online through recreation.gov.

The decision as to whether to issue the remaining 30% locally had yet to be made as of the publishing date of this article. If the decision is made to locally issue the remaining 30% “on the day of walk-in” basis, they will be issued at the Placerville Ranger Station in Camino (open seven days a week) and at the Forest Service Supervisor’s Office on College Drive in South Lake Tahoe (not open on the weekends). If the decision is not to issue “on the day of ” permits at the above sites, then 100% of the permits will be online.

The “walk-in” permits, if made available, are on a “first-come” basis only on the day you plan to

enter the wilderness — not before. When you get your permit (either by download or in person), sign it and carry it with you.

If it is decided to make 30% of the permits available locally, you will have to come to the Placerville Ranger Station or the Supervisor’s Office the day-of. Plan to arrive early as I have seen long lines form before the doors open.

Due to what we expect to be a high demand for backpacking permits this summer, you should apply for a Desolation Wilderness permit reservation as early as possible. This will ensure getting the wilderness destination location you want as they are controlled by a quota system.

Parking can be a problem at all trailhead locations so plan to arrive early to secure one of the remaining places. Parking fees will be in place this coming summer hiking season.

The Eagle Falls trailhead fee at Emerald Bay will continue this year at $5.

A new $10 fee will be will be charged at the following trailheads: 1. Twin Lakes and Rockbound. Both trailheads are located at Wrights Lake.

Bear canisters are strongly recommended for overnight treks not entirely because of bears but to protect your food items from the little critters that will smell them out and sometimes chew holes in your tent or backpack to get to them. At the moment, bear canisters are available for rent (for free, however, a credit card is required) from the Placerville Ranger Station, but not at the South Lake location. You will be asked to deposit the canister in the collection bin at the Ranger Station when you return from the wilderness. To be on the safe side, you are encouraged to rent or buy one before you hike. Please remember not to store any food in your car. There are no food lockers at Desolation Wilderness trailheads.

Outside the park boundaries, Evergreen Lodge and Rush Creek Lodge & Spa at Yosemite offer couples and families a rare opportunity to enjoy all of Yosemite, including the little-visited Hetch Hetchy Reservoir. In the early 1920s, damming of the Tuolumne River created the eight-mile-long Hetch Hetchy Reservoir. While surrounding landscapes may be winter white, Hetch Hetchy is frequently spring-like and otherworldly. You’ll delight in fern grottoes, sunlit granite, crashing waterfalls and treefrog wetlands. The bonus is that you can hike for hours undisturbed by other day-trippers.

At Evergreen Lodge, a mixture of fully-furnished cabins and cottages accommodate up to six guests.

Or if you want something more natural, check-out their “custom camping” rates. It’s the beauty of sleeping under the stars, without any of the hassles of pitching a tent. Rush Creek, Yosemite’s first new lodge in 25 years, opened in June 2016. A variety of accommodations and amenities create superb opportunities to unwind and explore. Playgrounds, indoor and outdoor games, swimming pools, family hikes, luxury spa, disc golf and s’mores, there’s literally something for everyone. Both lodges provide an assortment of food and libations — indoor and alfresco dining — as well as general stores to fill in the hunger and thirst gaps.

Also known as the Golden Chain Heritage Corridor, Highway 49 passes through charming and historical towns. Highway 49 has more than its share of twists and turns and slow-moving vehicles.

Relax and enjoy the ride. Remember, getting there is half the fun. If you’ve never driven to Yosemite via Highway 120 you may want to avoid Old Priest Grade, which is sometimes recommended by GPS apps. This incredibly steep, 2-mile stretch of road is not for the weak of heart. We love it and wouldn’t think of going any other way, but never with a trailer or motor home. Think about staying on Highway 120 on the west side of the canyon.

This will meet Old Priest Grade at the top. About a 6-mile trek, the New Priest Grade bypass is longer and somewhat winding, but the easy ascent can accommodate trailers, motor homes and tour buses.

If heading down the “vertical” Old Priest Grade, make sure your brakes are in good working order.

With the continued constraints surrounding COVID and infrastructure closures, you should consider visiting the park before May 20 and after Sept. 30. To reduce traffic congestion and improve the visitor experience, day-use reservations will be required. Reservations are only required for peakuse times between 6 a.m. and 4 p.m. each day. If you enter the park on a Yosemite Area Regional Transportation System bus or with an authorized tour group, you do not need an additional reservation or permit. Fares vary but include the $35 per car park entrance fee. YARTS operates daily and is an excellent option in Tuolumne County from mid-May through September. Check online for dates and times. Once you reach Yosemite Valley, hybrid electric shuttles provide transportation to valley attractions. Professionally guided trips are available at Evergreen Lodge and Rush Creek Lodge, which include park fees and relieve you of the hassle of securing a day-use pass. If you have lodging or camping reservations inside the park, you will not need an additional day-use reservation.

Thrifty, I’m doing really GREAT at saving my money!

I knew you could do it, Fritter!

It’s exciting just watching your money grow and grow and grow, isn’t it?

Fritter is trying to save $10 per month so that he can have enough money next summer to go to the Six Wags Amusement Park

Grow? How do you make dollars larger? Gee, all my money is still the same size as regular money.

Uhhh, forget I said anything and just keep saving, Fritter!

Fritter has been putting the money he is earning into a savings account which earns him money called interest!

Talk with your family about times you’ve had to all save money to do something or ge something. Talk abou t spending mistakes t that have been made and what was learned from them.

Work with a family member to come up with solutions to these challenges.

Evan collects stickers from the grocery store vending machine. Each one costs 50¢. He buys one each time his family shops, which is usually three times a week.

Evan earns $3.00 a week pulling weeds in his neighbor’s yard, so he spends half of his money each week on stickers and saves the rest in his piggy bank.

This week, the grocery store replaced the old sticker machine with a brand new one. The stickers are bigger, but they cost $1.00 each. If he buys three, he’ll spend all his money every week.

When Fritter puts money into his savings account, that is called a deposit. When he takes money out of his savings account, that is called a withdrawal.
