City Council affirms Old Hangtown as historical name Andrew Vonderschmitt Staff writer Old Hangtown isn’t Placerville’s nickname, it’s one of the town’s historical names, according to a City Council resolution passed this week. Brought forth at the behest of Placerville Mayor Dennis Thomas and City Council member Michael Saragosa, City Manager Cleve Morris introduced a resolution that the town’s historical monikers — Old Dry Diggins and Old Hangtown — would be affirmed based on historical significance recognized by California Historical Landmark Placard No. 475. Thomas clarified that he and Saragosa requested the resolution be agendized for Tuesday’s City Council meeting since
keeping or removing the city’s nickname had been left out of the discussion and City Council vote April 13 to remove the noose from city logos. “A lot of information was passed around after that meeting suggesting that it’s the beginning of a slippery slope and part of a whole grand scheme to take down everything historical in the city of Placerville,” said Thomas, adding that he wanted to “put it to bed.” “There was some, I thought, some confusion out there,” said Saragosa alluding to social media posts claiming Old Hangtown would be the next to go. He said he thought the name was different from the logo and the presence of the

Folsom Lake, which supplies water to EID customers in El Dorado Hills, had 360,000 acre-feet of water as of April 19 out of a maximum storage of 975,000 acre-feet.
EID storage OK despite a low water year Michael Raffety Mountain Democrat correspondent Snow surveys by the El Dorado Irrigation District taken April 1 show the Caples snow course at 72% of normal, Upper Carson at 68% and Lower Carson at 68%. Actual storage in EID’s high mountain reservoirs as of April 19 showed Caples Lake in Alpine County at 13,000 acre-feet, with a maximum storage of 22,340, a level to which that reservoir does not typically fill. Silver Lake in Amador County is at 2,900 acre-feet on that same date and typically fills to the maximum of 8,649 acre-feet. EID Operations Manager Dan Corcoran said there is an inch of snow left at lake level, but there is a tall mountain that has yet to deliver all its snow to Silver Lake. Echo Lake has 610 acre-feet available for diversion, with a maximum of 1,943, which it is expected to reach this year. Lake Aloha in Desolation Wilderness has 720 acre-feet as of April 19 and is expected to reach its maximum storage of 5,003 acrefeet. Water released from the four alpine lakes is captured at a diversion dam near Kyburz and sent into the El Dorado Canal. Jenkinson Lake in Pollock Pines is at 30,700 acre-feet and is expected to reach about 32,000 acre-feet out of its 41,033 maximum. Jenkinson Lake receives water via Camp Creek but has achieved its current level by diverting El Dorado Canal water into it via the Hazel Creek Tunnel. A twoyear supply of water in Jenkinson Lake is 25,000 acre-feet. Folsom Lake, from which El Dorado Hills is supplied water in the summer, had 360,000 acre-feet of water as of April 19 out of a maximum storage of 975,000 acre-feet. It will not reach that storage level. Weber Reservoir in Placerville, which is used to provide water rights for El Dorado

Feb. 16, 1940 - March 7, 2021
A resident of Shingle Springs since 1979, Carole passed peacefully in her sleep at home on Sunday, March 7. Born in Long Beach, Calif., to Kenneth and Viola Newman on Feb. 16, 1940, Carole was married for over 50 years to her childhood sweetheart, Jim Neal. Jim preceded her in death by 12 years and the two are finally reunited. Carole is survived by her only son, Scott and daughter-in-law Susan; granddaughter Jessica and her husband Thomas Neal; granddaughter Sara Neal; sister Joyce Button and many other beloved family members. Carole loved growing up in Westwood, Calif., where she met Jim. Sweethearts since the sixth grade, they were married in 1958 and their son Scott, born in 1963, was their pride and joy. Carole was very involved in Scott’s Little League, scout’s and other activities while also working as a clerk for Lucky Grocery Stores. After retiring from Lucky, Carole was an integral part of her granddaughters’ lives. She helped them with schoolwork and instilled in them a passion for crafting and cooking. She was a skilled crafter and excelled at everything from beading and painting to ornament making and gourd burning. Carole loved cooking and she was good at it. Her favorite days ended with a family dinner around her kitchen table. A graveside memorial at the Westwood Cemetery is planned for 11 a.m., July 18. If interested, please contact Scott. We ask in lieu of flowers or gifts, please give to the Westwood Museum P.O. Box 355, Westwood, CA 96137 in Carole’s name.

EID connects with Nextdoor app Michael Raffety Mountain Democrat correspondent Nextdoor is the latest social media platform the El Dorado Irrigation District has joined, announced Jesse Saich, district communications manager. For $5,000 annually EID will join as a public agency, which will allow it to communicate to all the local Nextdoor groups in the West Slope of El Dorado County. It will not be able to see the communications of each individual Nextdoor group, but EID’s Nextdoor account will allow people to respond to its postings and EID will be able to provide information for anyone who responds directly to EID’s Nextdoor account.
As a public agency EID can use the account to notify Nextdoor users of a line break in the area, which would be an “urgency alert.” Public service messages would include notices such as “call before you dig” so you don’t dig up a pipeline or fiber optic line. In the case of a line break EID also can notify customers by phone, email, Facebook and its website, with Nextdoor being an additional way to reach people in the affected area. EID will be able to track how many visit its Nextdoor page. Director Alan Day said it will be a good way to communicate with EID customers, “especially with our water system.”

noose. Other council members deferred comment until the public had a chance to speak. Much like the noose conversation, public comment was split on whether Old Hangtown should be affirmed. “They’re coming after every business, every noose that’s around this town — they’re coming after everything,” said Placerville resident Mandi Rodriguez. “This virus, critical racism woke-ism, is going to destroy our country.” “It doesn’t seem necessary for Placerville to reaffirm historical designations,” said Kathy Lishman of Placerville. “This resolution only serves to inflame a divisive issue.” She said businesses could choose whether to use the moniker in their names with or without a resolution from the city. Ali Jones described a difference between the vernacular use of a nickname and the adoption of that name by a government body, urging the council not to adopt the resolution. “This is a direct response to the ‘lose the noose’ campaign,” said the Placerville resident. “What we’re doing is formalizing a colloquial term and by doing that it is no longer a nickname.” Placerville resident Tiffany Moore accused the council of mishandling the controversial
topic. “Not allowing us to vote, it really struck a nerve and we are woke now,” she said. “Change is coming and it’s not in the form of a noose now … there is a recall coming.” Council member Jackie Neau then weighed in. “It is just as important for us to state our position on Old Hangtown as it was on the noose,” she said. Neau proposed amendments to the resolution cutting all references to the names Old Dry Diggins and Old Hangtown as nicknames, stating, “They were the original names.” She also offered context to a portion of the resolution cutting the line “notorious nickname due to its reputation for vigilante justice” and adding the line, “frontier justice prior to statehood.” “You‘re going to have people that boil this down to either no change or all change,” said Saragosa. “As a body, we made an acknowledgment that we had a symbol that wasn’t representative of what we had and in this case we are just underlining that these names were historical. “I think this is a good place to be that does acknowledge our history without being on the wrong side of that history going forward,” he added. Vice Mayor Kara Taylor said the community, council and staff could use a break from the topic
and agreed with some public comment that the resolution did nothing to appease those who protested the removal of the noose. “I don’t know if it’s going to settle any of the acrimony in the community,” she said, noting that she recognized the intention to close the book on the item. Taylor challenged replacing “vigilante justice” with “frontier justice.” “This is about recognizing history; we shouldn’t be sanitizing it,” she said. One last amendment came from Council member Patty Borelli to accept a proposed change from Planning Commissioner Michael Frenn to eliminate the reference to the state of California at the end of the resolution. In a letter to the council he stated it otherwise might be possible “to construe that Old Dry Diggins and Old Hangtown are only significant because of the state’s position.” Taylor made the motion to adopt the amended resolution retaining the term “vigilante justice,” replacing the word nickname with name, removing “notorious” and replacing it with “an incident of vigilante justice prior to statehood” and omitting the last line referring to the recognition from the state of California. The resolution passed 5-0.

Healthy Nerve Healthy Blood Vessels
Peripheral neuropathy is a result of damage to the nerves often causing weakness, pain, numbness, tingling, and may also lead to serious balance problems. Diseased Blood Vessels This damage is commonly caused by a lack of blood flow to the nerves in the hands and feet. If not properly treated this lack of blood flow may Nerves Shrivel when cause the nerves to degenerate. Blood Vessels Weak and Disappear As you can see in Figure 1, as the blood vessels surrounding the nerves become diseased they shrink and shrivel. This process hastens the flow of vital Figure 1 nutrients to the nerves required to remain healthy. When these nerves begin to “die” it could lead to balance problems, pain, numbness, tingling and burning symptoms in the hands and feet.
In order to effectively treat your neuropathy 3 factors must be determined. What is the underlying cause?
1
How much nerve damage has been sustained?
2
3
How much treatment will your condition require?
Drug Free Treatment Method
Placerville, CA – Currently the most common method most doctor’s recommend to treat neuropathy is with the use of prescription drugs. Although these drugs may temporarily reduce your symptoms they may cause a feeling of discomfort and in some cases lead to a variety of terrible unwanted side effects. We have a different method!
Our advanced treatment method has 3 main goals
1
Increase Blow flow
Stimulate small fiber nerves
2
3
Decrease brain based pain
The treatment to increase blood flow utilizes a specialized low-level light therapy (not to be confused with laser therapy) using light emitting diode technology. This technology was originally developed by NASA to assist in increasing blow flow. The low level light therapy is like watering a tree. The light therapy will allow the blood vessels to grow back around the peripheral nerves and provide them with the proper nutrients to heal and repair. It’s like adding water to a tree and seeing the roots grow deeper and deeper. The amount of treatment needed to allow the nerves to fully recover varies from person to person and can only be determined after a detailed neurological and vascular evaluation.
Wesley Koleukhov, 11 months, is not too sure about the pool but his mom Brina is definitely happy to be there. “We’re ready for the pool to be open — to be outside and in the water,” she said.
“My feet hurt so bad after sitting I could barely take the first few steps. I have had 11 treatments and no longer feel sharp or shooting pains and most of the tingling is gone. I now have full balance and can walk without pain. As Dr. Mooney explained the treatment is not painful, nothing uncomfortable, and is actually very relaxing.” – Neuropathy Pain Patient John Mooney, DC at Premier Healthcare will do a neuropathy severity examination to determine the extent of the nerve damage for only $47.

The American Revolution was successful because the citizens had their guns
M
any may not remember their basic U.S. history courses as to why the Second Amendment exists in the first place. Certainly, when enacted, there was no thought of restricting type of firearm or where or who could carry. So its HAROLD PEASE placement as the second most valued freedom in the Bill of Rights had nothing to do with personal safety or hunting, these were already assumed. It was specifically placed right after freedom of religion, speech, press and assembly to make certain that these freedoms were never taken from us. Our Constitution was founded with a healthy fear of government. Historically it was always a government that took away liberty. One must remember that early patriots did not ask the existing British government if they could revolt. They argued in the Declaration of Independence that they were “endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” coming from a much higher source than mere man and, “Whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government.” They were expected to suffer evils while sufferable, “but when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariable the same object, evinces a design to reduce them under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government, and to provide new guards for their future security.” The right of revolution requires the means of revolution and this is the reason the Second Amendment exists. Normally the ballot box is the only self-correction needed but they had no intention of forfeiting the right to revolution they exercised giving us liberty in the first place. Nor did they assume that future generations would never need the more serious self-correction they used. So passionate were they over this issue that they double protected it, first by making it a constitutional amendment. No presidential degree or congressional statute can alter an amendment — only another amendment submitted through the states. This requires a vote of three-fourths of the states in support. Second, this is the only amendment, that itself, specifically forbids change. “The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.” No piece of law is more secure. As far as we can ascertain, America’s Constitution is the only Constitution in world history that specifically prohibits its government from removing the right of the people to keep and bear arms and thus the means to resist its government tyranny — as was exercised against the British. An armed populace twice proved its value to liberty in the Revolutionary War. First, many do not remember why Lexington and Concord were so important. The Americans learned that the British ■

EDITOR: ileen Dean recently wrote that the definition of infrastructure has changed from “roads and bridges” to “political payback we can’t afford.” The Oxford Dictionary defines infrastructure as “the basic physical and organizational structures and facilities (e.g. buildings, roads, power supplies) needed for the operation of a society or enterprise. ‘the social and economic infrastructure of a country’.” Even if you only consider the physical components of infrastructure, in our modern world there is more involved than roads and bridges. Surely our nation’s electrical grid, telephone landlines and network of cell towers are part of the national infrastructure. And if we are going to include the electrical grid, we should also include all the various means of generating the electricity that is delivered to our homes, businesses, factories, churches, schools, hospitals, military and government facilities. Then we should include water delivery and waste treatment and disposal facilities because all those physical buildings need clean, safe water and they create waste in one form or another. These are the basic physical structures that a modern society needs to be productive. If you then consider the organizational structures and facilities needed for a productive society you

need to take into account education and training needs for both current and future workforce. And we need a healthy workforce so they don’t miss a lot of work. That requires an adequate and accessible healthcare system. That healthcare system also needs to support the retired workforce as they age, unless you want to just throw people on the garbage heap after they have spent the majority of their life contributing to society, whether that be as a factory worker, medical doctor or nurse, the preschool teacher who watches your children while you are at work or the person who works in the fast food business where you stop on your way home from work. So, Ms. Dean, I would argue that the definition of infrastructure hasn’t changed. We simply haven’t recognized all the components of infrastructure that are required to support a truly productive population in this modern world. We no longer live in the 1950s world where President Eisenhower identified the need for a national highway system. We now need to maintain that highway system, as well as our national electrical grid and power generating systems, our modern communication systems and the social support systems needed to support our ever-increasing and aging population. It’s not political payback; it’s an investment in our future. KATHY SMITH Placerville

News about Mike Pence (and his heart) these days

n case you missed it, Mike Pence had a pacemaker installed last week to counter what’s described as “symptoms associated with a slow heart rate.” Really? Didn’t you wonder about the zombie-like affect all those times he stood CHRIS behind President Trump, usually unmasked, usually unflinching, silently maintaining an impressive thousand-yard stare. The guy hardly ever smiled or cleared his throat or scratched his nose as far as I could tell. He’s the kind of guy who wouldn’t react if there was a fly walking around on his head during a vice presidential
debate, as seen by millions of people at home and around the world. “I’ll bet that guy has a really slow heart rate,” many viewers probably said to themselves or to nearby debate watchers. As a two-time heart attack survivor myself, I wouldn’t wish ill on DALEY any other “heart-guy,” mostly. So, I don’t wish any ill on Mike Pence regarding his health issues. Newsweek ran a brief story about his pacemaker insertion. A related article quoted a recent survey reporting that as many as 30 million Americans don’t know who Mike Pence even is. Another story referred to him as the “completely irrelevant,

one-term vice president.” Ouch. Politicususa (never heard of it until Monday) reported that more than 200 employees at the Simon & Schuster publishing house signed an “internal petition” demanding the company not publish Pence’s memoir nor that of any other high-ranking Trump administration officials. Thus “not to treat the Trump administration as a ‘normal’ chapter in American history.” It further stated there was little demand for the memoir even before he became “irrelevant,” and likely very little “pent up” clamor for it now. FDR’s two-term Vice President John Nance Garner is famously recognized for describing the vice presidency as “not worth a bucket of warm spit.” Evidently the legendary event may be “more good story” than good history. Nevertheless, one might generously be forgiven for considering Mike Pence
the poster boy for that particular bucket. Way back when, my impression of the man was that of an archconservative with a pretty obvious Bible-thumping perspective, fairly benign and relatively harmless except on LGBT and women’s reproductive health concerns. Who could have guessed how dangerously enabling he would turn out to be as the resident lapdog? Likewise, who could have foreseen him as the ultimate target of the Jan. 6 hangmen? And who can imagine the guy is still kissing Donald Trump’s ring and licking his boots? If past is prologue, with any luck it won’t be long till 100 million Americans don’t know who Mike Pence is. Union Mine beats Bradshaw 72-63; El Dorado up next Thomas Frey Staff writer Physical play on the offensive glass and 3-point swishes shot Union Mine past Bradshaw Christian 72-63 in Sierra Valley Conference play Tuesday in El Dorado. Last season each game between the Diamondbacks and the Pride went down to the wire with Union Mine winning both by a combined 4 points. The squads’ first meeting in 2021 nearly came down to the final shot but accuracy, toughness and proficient ball movement allowed the Diamondbacks to pull away in the second half before winning by 9. Sophomore guard Mason Mottashed finished with 17 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists. “He was feeling it; Mason was amazing,” said senior forward Daniel Groves. “That’s our sophomore right there going off for us.” Mottashed hit 3 of 8 of the team’s 3-point baskets and even drew a charge with 1:30 to play that gave the Diamondbacks the ball back with a 65-60 lead.
Groves then put the game away by drilling a 3-point shot with 30 seconds to play. Groves was a bully defensively, pulling down 7 rebounds to go with his 16 points. “Daniel sets the tone athletically and physically,” said Union Mine head coach Ryan Williams. “He’s the big banger; he’s the one that gets it done.” Rebound recoveries gave the Diamondbacks second chances. Mottashed had 3 offensive rebounds while Matt Hemmenway, Austin Sweeney and Jaxon King each had a pair. Senior forward JP Nida had 5 offensive rebounds. “That’s one of our focuses coming into the game, crashing the boards and giving us extra opportunities,” Mottashed said. “That’s a big piece for how we win our games.” Union Mine heads to Placerville to play El Dorado tonight. “Playing El Dorado is always fun,” Williams said. “That’s the best part of league, playing your rivals.” The game will tip off at 7 p.m. “It’s like no other game,” Groves said. “It’s the one I look forward to the most.”

Thomas Frey Staff writer Ponderosa and El Dorado took first place a combined 27 times in the 32-event Ron Ruptier Invitational Saturday. The Ron Ruptier Invitational has been hosted at Ponderosa High School since 2012, a year after the legendary Ponderosa cross country and track and field coach in whose memory the event is named passed away. The meet featured all five El Dorado County high schools — Ponderosa, El Dorado, Union Mine, Oak Ridge and Golden Sierra.

Ponderosa senior Shae Steiner won all four of her events. She cruised to victory in the 4×400 relay and the 400-meter and narrowly defeated Oak Ridge junior Alyssa Heinlein by .36 seconds in the 200 meters and El Dorado junior Hannah Crone by .13 seconds in the 300meter hurdles. Steiner and Crone’s times in the 300-meter hurdles are both top-10 in California. Crone was a medalist in all four events she competed in. She took first place in the 100-meter hurdles by .28 seconds over Oak Ridge senior Caroline Hansen. In the long jump Crone hit her season high leaping 17 feet, 11 inches. The shift will only be possible after you’ve reckoned with your feelings and deemed the loss to be necessary. TAURUS (April 20-May 20). If you wanted to get judgmental, all the data is right there in front of you. It doesn’t look great on paper, so there’s plenty to judge. But you want to be constructive instead -- which is hard, helpful and so on-brand for you. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). There are those who will do anything you ask of them, but you have to tell them exactly what to do. Do you really want to work that hard? Seek people who come with their own initiative. CANCER (June 22-July 22). To talk about what you know and listen when you don’t seems so simple, but many will violate the rule. They speak to fill the void or get attention -- tiresome. All you have to do is politely excuse yourself. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). When you think about it, the amount of love and respect you give yourself pretty much mirrors the amount you give others and vice versa. So no matter how you go about it, increasing the love increases the love. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). Those who worry about having a thing are not really rich in it. There are two ways to be rich -- to have so much of something that you can’t possibly run out of it or to have so little of it that you have nothing to lose. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). Explore, decide, change your mind -- all part of the process. Anyone who gives you a hard time about this doesn’t fully understand your creativity. Believe in your vision enough for anyone who can’t see it. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). But be mindful not to tie your self-worth into anything as precarious as a bank balance, bad hair day or other transitory state. Moods will rise and fall like the temperature outside, but your value remains inestimable. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). Look into the depth of the sky, imagine the breadth of the ocean, try and count the stars. Take that expansive feeling with you wherever you go and know that whatever it is you think you lack, there really is enough to go around. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). There’s an elegance in you that you often let shine, though sometimes you tuck it behind a shield because you don’t want too many people coming for you at once. Today, you’re very much in control of and aware of this.

Tilford Tribute sees big wins Gary Thomas Placerville Speedway Placerville Speedway hosted its annual Tilford Tribute Saturday — the biggest night of the season for the limited late model and pure stock divisions. Claiming victories at the event were Jay Sears in the traveling Tri-State Pro Stock Series, Ray Trimble in the limited late models, Nick Baldwin in the pure stocks, Wyatt Lakin with the mini trucks and Joel Hannagan with the vintage hard tops. In the 25-lap Tri-State Pro Stock main event it was Reno, Nev., driver Jay Sears who hung tough and withstood a late challenge from Walter Ball to pick up the $1,000 victory in the series debut at the speedway. The limited late model feature saw a dramatic 20-lap contest. Garden Valley’s Jay Norton led at the waving of the green flag before Diamond Springs driver Dan Jinkerson took over the top spot on lap two. Norton got into the back of Jinkerson and sent him for
a spin to bring out a yellow. Officials proceeded to make a rough driving call on Norton, putting an end to his night. Auburn’s Ray Trimble inherited the lead and never looked back en route to taking the checkered flag. Jinkerson rebounded nicely and won out in an exciting battle with Tyler Lightfoot over the closing laps to finish second. The 25-lap pure stock finale was a rough and tumble affair. Jinkerson and Oakley’s Nick Baldwin fought tooth and nail but Baldwin battled his way to the lead to pick up a big victory. Rookie driver out of Diamond Springs Wyatt Lakin continued his blistering pace this season, securing his third mini truck triumph in as many starts. Veteran Joel Hannagan dominated the vintage hard top finale, winning with ease over the rest of the field.

usician James Coffey’s “Legends of the Rails” perfectly captures the spirit of all those who have fallen in love with trains — from people who meticulously recreate in miniature their favorite runs to others who jump into the engineer’s seat of a powerful locomotive. What is it about trains? How do they inspire young and old alike? In El Dorado County there’s an easy way to get answers. Hop aboard an El Dorado Western Railroad scenic run and let the rocking train soothe you while volunteers share their track tales. Georgetown resident Russ Elmore told the Mountain Democrat he has volunteered for about six years ... or so. “I lost track,” he said — not sure if a pun was intended as at the very moment he said it Elmore was driving a speeder car down the track through El Dorado. In a nearby pasture bulls grazed on newly sprouted grass as a gentle breeze rolled through the area. Even though he had a mask on, it was clear Elmore was smiling. Like most volunteers, Elmore started out as a crossing guard, halting traffic at intersections as the train passed, and worked his way into the coveted driver’s seat. In

SAN FRANCISCO — San Francisco Ballet hosts an online presentation of Helgi Tomasson’s “Romeo & Juliet,” May 6-26 in the multi-capture, cinematic production by Lincoln Center at the Movies: Great American Dance from 2015, captured on stage at San Francisco’s War Memorial Opera House. A signature work of the company, Tomasson’s “Romeo & Juliet” has been performed worldwide and was the last work SF Ballet toured prior to the pandemic, in the fall of 2019 at The Royal Danish Opera House in Copenhagen, Denmark, when it was noted for its “color rich” interpretation of Shakespeare’s classic story. Beginning May 6, SF Ballet will sell a package that includes both “Romeo & Juliet” and Tomasson’s “Swan Lake,” on screen May 20 through June 9, in celebration of the closure of the 2021 Digital Season, which also includes Program 05 (through May 12), comprising Cathy Marston’s “Snowblind,” David Dawson’s “Anima Animus and Tomasson’s “7 for Eight.” Full ticketing and calendar information for Tomasson’s “Romeo & Juliet” is listed below, and casting can be
Carefully choreographed fight scenes, like this one with Pascal Molat and Luke Ingham, add excitement to Tomasson’s “Romeo & Juliet.” found on SF Ballet’s website, sfballet.org. Tomasson’s “Romeo & Juliet” premiered during SF Ballet’s 1994 Repertory Season and is set to Sergei Prokofiev’s score, performed in the May 6-26 stream by the SF Ballet Orchestra under the direction of Music Director Martin West. The stream of “Romeo & Juliet” includes former SF Ballet Principal Dancers Maria Kochetkova and Davit Karapetyan in the title roles, alongside Pascal Molat, now on faculty at SF Ballet School, as Mercutio. Current Principal Dancers Joseph Walsh performs as Benvolio, Luke Ingham as Tybalt, WanTing Zhao as Rosaline, Dores André as Harlot, Wei Wang as Acrobat and
Benjamin Freemantle as a Montague. “Romeo & Juliet” includes lighting design by Thomas R. Skelton and Italian Renaissance designs by Jens-Jacob Worsaae, marking Worsaae’s final collaboration with Tomasson before he passed away shortly after the ballet’s premiere. “I think it was the most beautiful work he’d ever done and yet he did not see it,” Tomasson said about the ballet’s designs. “That’s [one] reason why this production is very, very special to me.” Martino Pistone choreographed the production’s swordfighting scenes in tandem with Tomasson. Actor, teacher and movie stunt man Pistone, who also
performs as Prince of Verona in the stream, expressed the desire to create “a dichotomy,” where Tomasson’s “classical ballet matched up with stage combat [and] semi-realism ... when the fights break out, it’s a whole different movement which accentuates the illusion of violence that you see between these two families.” True to the era, characters fight with rapiers, daggers, bucklers and capes in tightly choreographed scenes requiring hours of rehearsal. Tickets and packages may be purchased online at sfballet.org. For more information call (415) 865-2000, Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

BUTTERED AND SALTY ‘Scoob!’ ★★ PG, 1 hour, 33 minutes Anamation, Comedy, Adventure Available on HBO Max
P
erusing through the isles of the virtual video store (for those of us that remember the real thing), my 4-yearold and I came across “Scoob!” on HBO Max this week. Set for a worldwide theatrical release back in May 15, 2020, but moved to digital streaming due to the COVID19 pandemic causing the closure of theaters across the globe, Warner Bros. made the film available to own digitally in the United States on the same date it was planned to be released in theaters last year. Somehow I missed this one, but thought it might be a good choice to show my littles ones. The 4-year-old protested that he wanted to play Mario instead, but “Scoob!” was the choice and he was going to review it with me. We pushed play. Scooby-Doo and the proprietors of the Mystery Machine have been around long enough that two or three generations have now enjoyed their exploits. From television, to home video and feature films, Scooby and the gang have pushed the nostalgic button for a lot of us over the years. Well, it’s been 15 years since the last feature film for this property, so of course Warner
Joshua B. Porter Democrat correspondent Brothers had to go back to the well and make everything old new again. This time, the gang faces their most challenging mystery ever: a plot to unleash the ghost dog Cerberus upon the world. As they race to stop this dogpocalypse, the gang discovers that Scooby has an epic destiny greater than anyone imagined. Simple enough, right? If you want the truncated 4-year-old version of the review here it goes: The first 10 minutes focuses on how a young Shaggy (voiced by Will Forte) meets a young pup he names “Scoob” (voiced by longtime voice actor Frank Welker) and a friendship is formed. They eventually meet the other members of the gang and they all become fast friends, solving mysteries and going on adventures together. When a “mystery” investor named Simon Cowell (more on him in a minute) is willing to to invest money into Mystery Inc with the caveat that Scoob and Shaggy should be left out, the boy and his dog are left on their own, only to uncover another mystery and interact
with alien robots and a superhero and his team. It’s at this mid-section of the movie that my 4-year-old became bored. The middle of the film, when Scooby and Shaggy are away from the other main characters, falls flat and loses a lot of steam. One would think the addition of said musclebound hero and evil, little robots would keep the interest of a kid, but it didn’t. I think this part of the movie is indicative of my other issues with the film, namely the general feeling that studio executives sat in a room, thought about all the things kids love these days and threw it into the script, which somehow took seven people to work on. Scooby-Do and gang? Check! Hey, kids like robots. Check! Comic books movies are all the rage now. Check! Simon
Cowell? Check! Wait. Simon Cowell? This one left me puzzled. “American Idol” has been an institution for years, but can you show me a kid between the ages and 5-10 who actually knows who Cowell is by name or likeness? Probably not. The “Hey kids, it’s Simon Cowell!” moment not only fell flat, I could see the kids eyes glaze over. Mine did too. The film does have positive points. I think the animation is good and when it’s at its best the style and color pallet/lighting of the movie is spot-on and really captures the feel of the original show with an updated zest. I also like how other Hana Barbera characters are featured in the movie, particularly Captain Caveman (Tracy Morgan) and the main villain Dick Dastardly
(Jason Isaacs), who I remember from other Saturday morning cartoons years ago. While good intentioned and featuring some impressive animation and character design, “Scoob!” falls flat where it counts: keeping the kids interested. Throwing pop culture references at the screen didn’t seem to work (does Pixar ever have to resort to such tricks?) and the entire superhero
side plot could have been completely cut out without the film suffering. Worth streaming on the TV in the background but nothing more. Joshua B. Porter is a writer/director/producer. His most recent project, the music video “When You Know” by the band Sunny State, can now be streamed on Youtube. He can be reached at @joshuabporter or joshuabporter@ mtdemocrat.net.

SACRAMENTO — City Theatre at Sacramento City College closes out its all online 2020-21 season with “10 Ways to Survive Life in a Quarantine.” Playwright Don Zolidis has written a comedic Zoom play with a menagerie of characters sharing their quick and quirky home quarantine survival techniques. SCC faculty member Peter Mohrmann will be directing. Performances run through May 9 and stream live at 7:30 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays; prerecorded performances are available beginning at 2 p.m. until midnight on Sundays. Tickets are available at CityTheatre.net.
Written to be performed online, “10 Ways to Survive Life in a Quarantine” is an irreverent and fun look at how people are managing during the quarantine. A variety of people offer short eccentric insights on 10 different quarantine life hacks such as “Falling in Love with Inanimate Objects,” “Musicals with Pets” and “William Shakesbear” — famous tragedies acted out with stuffed animals. These streaming monologues are similar to the comedic characters who briefly roll onto SNL’s Weekend Update or other sketch-style performances.

Tickets go on sale May 1 for Valhalla Tahoe’s summer concerts. This summer’s events will be held outside on the Grand Lawn in order to promote heath and safety among audience members. Attendees who reserve tables will have the best view and receive one free drink per person. The remainder of the lawn will be open to free, socially distant lawn seating; 6-foot spacing between families will be required.
Schedule June 15: James Garner’s Tribute to Johnny Cash — Garner and his band have performed more than 500 professional shows, including a special concert at Folsom State Prison
in 2008. July 21: Achilles Wheel — the group combines infectious high energy dance beats and stark lyrical ballads. Mixing roots rock storytelling with dance hall psychedelia they bring amazing energy to all their shows. July 28: The Tom Rhodes Band — Before you hear Tom Rhodes’s voice, you feel it like a left jab to the jaw. It’s raspy and soulful, like Ray LaMontagne or a young Van Morrison Aug. 11: Grateful Bluegrass Boys — This acoustic string band from the Santa Cruz/SF Bay Area’s primary mission is to get the audience singing and dancing along to beloved songs. Aug. 18: Earles of Newtown — Enjoy this an electric gypsy jazz band cross-pollinating both vintage and modern beat culture into an intoxicating, crowd-pleasing elixir. Copies of the general prevailing rate of wages in the county in which the Work is to be done are also on file at the Department of Transportation’s principal office, and are available upon request, and in case of projects involving Federal funds, Federal wage requirements as predetermined by the United States Secretary of Labor have been included in the Contract Documents. The Department of Transportation will not accept lower State wage rates not specifically included in the Federal minimum wage determinations. This includes “helper” (or other classifications based on hours of experience) or any other classification not appearing in the Federal wage determinations. Where Federal wage determinations do not contain the State wage rate determination otherwise available for use by Contractor and subcontractors, Contractor and subcontractors must pay not less than the Federal minimum wage rate which most closely approximates the duties of the employees in question. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 844-477-7869, or visit this internet Web site www.stoxposting.com, using the file number assigned to this case T.S.# 85242. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is
to attend the scheduled sale.” For sales conducted after January 1, 2021: NOTICE TO TENANT: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call (844) 477-7869, or visit this internet website www.STOXPOSTING.com, using the file number assigned to this case 85242 to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee’s sale. Third, you must submit a bid; by remitting the funds and affidavit described in Section 2924m(c) of the Civil Code; so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. If you think you may qualify as an “eligible tenant buyer” or “eligible bidder,” you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase. 4/23, 4/30, 5/7 8914 ORDER TO SHOW CAUSE FOR CHANGE OF NAME PC 20210172 TO ALL INTERESTED PERSONS: 1. Album
Continued from B2
from One Wise Studio helped co-produce this album that brings prominent reggae artists together in efforts to create a positive, psychedelic “road trip” for listeners. The album cover, designed by an artist from Italy, shows bright, vibrant colors to lift people’s mood. This track features five accomplished reggae and roots artists from both Jamaica and California, including Perfect Giddimani, Fanton Mojah, Lutan Fyah, Iba Mahr — who Richards relates to as a young Bob Marley — Robbie Rule and Winstrong. Richards said that once guidelines permit, there will be live performances of the album. As it did with almost everyone, the pandemic managed to affect Richard’s
Big
career as promotion and DJ work suffered during the shutdown. “We are still pushing forward,” he said. “The positivity of music never dies.” Richards said instead of getting down from the loss of the work, he changed his attitude and looked at it as an opportunity to refocus his energy and passion toward producing music. “People can always reach the music,” he said. “If you’re not passionate, it’s not going to work. Find a way to make sure that whatever you are doing, you are going above and beyond.” For more information visit Ambassador Musik on instagram: instagram.com/ambassador_musik. rt on the Divide Gallery welcomes a new painter from the area. Several landscape oil paintings from Christine Springer’s time in Arizona and New Mexico are on display now and she is the gallery’s featured artist in May for a special show titled Town and Country. Springer earned a bachelor of fine arts in interior design from Arizona State University in the ’70s and became attracted to southwestern landscapes and the natural light of the high desert. Using brilliant color, defining shapes, finding interesting light and with expressive brushstrokes, she paints both outside directly from life (en plein air) and from original photographs she has taken from her travels in the U.S., Europe and western Turkey.

The artist said she wants the viewer to feel her passion and emotion from her paintings, calling her style realism mixed with impressionism. Her painting heroes are Georgia O’Keefe, Edgar Payne, Wayne Thiebaud, Edward Hopper and Andrew Wyeth. Not only did she study interior design, but also printmaking with Geraldine Russell in New Mexico and most recently oil painting under Randy Blasquez in the style called Russian Impressionism. AODC Gallery, 6295 Main St. in Georgetown, will host an artist’s reception for Springer, 1-4 p.m. May 2. Guests will enjoy refreshments and music by pianist Mary Beth Dowd. Drop by the Gallery May 1 or May 2 to enter a free drawing to win one of Springer’s oil painting. The winner will be announced at 3 p.m. May 2 (need not be present to win).
