“I
’m a hands-on guy; I like to get my feet dirty,” confessed Rowland Gaal, as he traipsed through brush around Bass Lake. His zest for dirt is only one reason the longtime educator and naturalist was recognized as the 2020 Champion of the Community at April’s El Dorado Hills Community Services District Board meeting. With a ready smile, Gaal’s infectious enthusiasm belies his 76 years as he imparts knowledge of the flora, fauna and history of Bass Lake Regional Park, his most recent pet project. El Dorado Hills Fire Department staff must review every building permit coming through the community — from a home addition to a four-story apartment complex. Initial plan reviews done by the department’s Community Risk Reduction Division can currently take as long as eight weeks, according to EDH Fire Chief Maurice Johnson.
