Some people are just mean Dear Annie: I had a sister-inlaw who treated my family, especially my parents, in a cruel manner. The worst thing she did was prevent my parents from embracing their grandchildren after school, even though they lived across the street from the school. Their grandson was told he could NOT talk to his grandpa on his walk home. This led to one of the few times I saw my dad cry. There were many other subtle things. The only way I could accept her was by telling myself to feel sorry for someone who has a mental defect. I had a daughter-in-law with the same traits regarding gifts and other issues. I finally realized that you cannot change anything. You must accept that some people are just plain mean. Their actions are not your fault. Some people intend to hurt and to control. They do not want to change. You must only do your best to work around it.
Regarding monetary gifts to grandchildren, I suggest opening an account at Vanguard (or some such company) or federal savings bonds with you as the main controller, giving the grandchild control when they go to college or some such life change or need for cash. — Hurt Grandparents

He will have to start dialysis soon. He’s lived with me for most of his adult life. My problem is that he is extremely verbally abusive. This has been going on for about five years and seems to be getting worse. He throws tantrums, sometimes so intense that he ends up damaging things in the house. I’m tired of dealing with this, and I fear it will just keep getting worse. He can’t afford to live on his own with just $800 monthly disability checks. But it might be “wrong” for different reasons, in that it doesn’t go far enough in creating space between you two. You need to set healthy boundaries with your son, for both of your sakes. It’s completely unacceptable for him to treat you so poorly. Also, it’s not healthy for him to be in an environment where he can avoid the consequences of his actions. As psychologist Noelle Nelson put it: “Enabling is helping a person in a way that feeds the dysfunction. Helping is being there for someone in a way that does not support the dysfunction.” I recommend attending a support group such as Families Anonymous before deciding on your next move.
