S
miles as bright as the California sun lit the waters of Folsom Lake Saturday as the 54th Camellia Cup Regatta, cancelled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, was finally sailed in fresh breezes that varied from four to eight knots. Winning the venerable trophy and the centerboard perpetual trophy was Bend, Ore.’s Bruce Edwards (formerly of Santa Cruz) who had recently purchased his Banshee (a 14-foot, single-handed, racing dinghy) from a local sailor. Edwards dominated the seven-boat Banshee class with four firsts and a second, but it wasn’t a run-away win. Shadowing him throughout the five races was Sacramento’s Charles Witcher, a former Camellia Cup champion. Edwards had long known about Camellia Cup and when his brother moved to Cool he looked for a boat they could share sailing in the area. “I’d always known about Camellia Cup. It has a great reputation. Overall, ■

The El Dorado Hills Raley’s is getting a new look and a new focus — health and wellness.
Raley’s gets health, wellness overhaul Sel Richard Staff writer For those who scour nutrition labels for offending ingredients, grocery shopping is about to get a little easier. Focusing on organics, nutrition and education, the regional grocery store Raley’s opened its first new Raley’s O-N-E Market in Truckee last June and now the El Dorado Hills store is the company’s first conversion. Remodeling has been under way for the past several weeks to update not only the interior décor, but the products as well. “Every item on the shelf has been curated through our system with advice and guidance from our dietician,” explained Public Affairs Director Chelsea Minor. Oak Ridge students shine at state academic competition Dina Gentry EDC Office of Education Oak Ridge High School’s Academic Decathlon team claimed victory at this year’s El Dorado County Academic Decathlon regional competition in February and advanced to the state competition held in March. Trojan decathletes took home 11 individual state medals. The team joined decathletes from across the state for a fierce week of competition. The California Academic Decathlon state competition is historically held in-person in Sacramento; however, due to the restrictions related to COVID-19, the decathletes participated in all 10 events virtually via online platforms. “It’s an honor to be able to congratulate you on your great efforts and your great accomplishments in the statewide academic decathlon,” expressed Tony Thurmond, California’s
state superintendent of public instruction. “This has been one of the toughest years that we’ve experienced as we work through the pandemic to maintain our safety — I believe probably one of the toughest experiences we will have to work through in our lifetime — but you doubled down in addition to maybe being in distance learning,” he continued. “To the decathletes, to your families, to your educators, to your administrators, we say to you congratulations. Thank you for being shining examples of what a California education can do. These skills will carry you far in your lifetime, and we are so proud of you.” A unique aspect of the Academic Decathlon is that it is designed to include students of all academic abilities and achievement levels. Each team member competes against ■
