THE DAVIS ENTERPRISE

Worth the time Dear Annie: I have been dating my boyfriend for two years. We are both in our mid-40s. But I feel as if we are walking in opposite directions on the road of life. He works two full-time jobs and has several younger children. He has so many responsibilities financially that he is stretched thin. I have never been invited inside his home. I have been outside the house, but that is it. I tell him almost everything, while he keeps most things bottled up. That is the biggest problem with our relationship. I try to discuss this, but he sweeps it under the rug. First, his daughter hates me. She refuses to meet me. She cries and carries on. She’s 16 years old. So he makes excuses for her. Secondly, I recently found out that his brother and his long-term girlfriend are living there and not helping with any of the household expenses. This bothers me because, until recently, I have more often than not covered his mortgage while paying my own rent and household expenses. I told him that he needs to talk to the adults in his house because I can’t financially continue to do this. He used stimulus money to get caught up on his mortgage because he was behind (I assumed that he hasn’t paid since I stopped paying it). I told him a year ago that things would be so much easier for us if we lived together. But I feel as though that is not an option. And he says that he needs both jobs for the foreseeable future. This means that I see him roughly an hour a month. And we have a date night maybe once every five months, if he’s able to get the night off. He keeps apologizing for not being able to

Legals@DavisEnterprise.net see me. But every time we talk, he tells me about the bills he is behind on. And I am not sure how much more I can take. I love this man with every fiber of my being. He says he loves me and that I should know how he feels about me and it kills him that he can’t spend too much time with me. Some days I just feel used to help him keep his head above water. How do I get him to see the big picture? Or do I just fade away into the shadows and tell him I can’t do it anymore? — Lost and In Love

Dear Lost In Love: I’m not sure that he is the one who needs to see the big picture here. That person is you. One hour a month of time spent together is not a relationship. Walk away — today. This does not sound like a good match. The sooner you leave, the sooner you can find someone who wants to make time for you. ——— Dear Annie: I hope you will print my response to “Irked,” who had to convert milliliters to teaspoons. Any pharmacy would be glad to provide a dosing spoon, cup or syringe with your prescription. People often use regular spoons instead of more accurate measuring spoons. That’s a mistak because regular teaspoons and tablespoons are not standard. People could over- or

underdose themselves. — Pharmacy Technician in NH Dear Pharmacy Tech: Thank you for your expert advice. I hope this will help anyone who is confused by dosing sizes.

Hygiene problems points to deeper issues Dear Annie: Our son is an educated, well-read, successful married man. We taught him how to keep a home, how to clean, how to groom himself. This has never been an issue. Since he married five years ago, all things clean have disappeared. His home is filthy. We help out at his house, doing painting, flooring, etc. We are glad to be a part of our son’s life and don’t mind helping — if he just took care of his things and his home. He also doesn’t seem to care how he presents himself. Recently, his wife had a birthday party for him. He came out looking like he had just gotten out of bed. The bathroom looked like it hadn’t been cleaned in over a month. He was not raised like this. How do we approach him about this without causing hard feelings? — Embarrassed Mom Dear Embarrassed Mom: He might not have been raised like this, but clearly something is going on in his home life. Letting go of your house, and yourself for that matter, could be signs of a deeper issue. He could be dealing with depression, anxiety or ADHD. As a temporary BandAid, you could offer to pay for a cleaning service — even monthly could make a huge difference. While that might tackle the surface of what is going on, it’s important to look at what is going

on inside of him. Ask him if he wants to go out to dinner or for a walk, and have an open, nonjudgmental conversation with him about how his life is going. And how he is feeling. Hopefully, he will open up. Continue to support and be there for him. If matters do not get better, he might need the help of a professional counselor. ——— Dear Annie: My daughter died at age 41 after 17 years of marriage. Her husband will always be my son-in-law. I was one of the first people he called when he started dating again because he didn’t want me to hear it from someone else. He repeated that when he decided to remarry. I knew that I would have a difficult time attending the wedding. However, I wanted to go to support him and my three grandchildren. When I overheard my granddaughters talking about the wedding, I asked if there was a date selected, because I hadn’t been told. The response was that it was during a time when I had a long-planned trip scheduled. So, they knew I wouldn’t be able to attend. I don’t know if that was on purpose or a coincidence, but it was certainly a relief. The stepmother is a fine person and is loved by my grandchildren. — I Am a Blessed Papa Dear Blessed Papa: I am so sorry for the loss of your daughter. As I have written before, there is life before you lose a child and life after. The after is never the same. You sound like an incredible man, and your son-in-law — the father of your grandchildren — shows great respect toward you. Your focus on your blessings is admirable, and it is precisely

what leads one to live a more peaceful life.

Please tone down the tambourine

Dear Annie: I attend a small church where the congregation does not exceed 12 members. So on any given Sunday, there are at least nine of us in attendance, including the pastor and first lady. We follow the government recommended COVID-19 social distance guidelines. I am hearing impaired and wear a digital hearing aid. There is an older member who beats a tambourine at the drop of a hat during worship service, and since I’m not impaired by volume but tone, the tambourine sounds more pronounced to the point that it gives me a quick migraine or makes me dizzy. Should I speak with the pastor so he can instruct her to tone it down, or should I go elsewhere? I can’t seem to enjoy service like this, especially when it is already hard to hear a person speaking or praying while they are masked. She beats it during prayers, too. I really believe the tambourine lady knows this annoys me. — Dizzy and Annoyed Church Member. Dear Dizzy: Yes, you should tell your pastor how the tambourine is giving you migraines and making you dizzy. He probably has no idea that the tone is so pronounced for you. And it might be having the same effect on others. As humans, we often write narratives in our minds that other people are engaging in behaviors to specifically bother us. Try to not put that onto the member who is beating the tambourine. Chances are that she just enjoys the sound of the instrument and gets carried away.
