Easter celebrations, albeit modified, took place as planned in El Dorado Hills and Cameron Park. Little ones scoured local parks for prize-bearing eggs and enjoyed the spring sunshine.

The North State Building Industry Association recently saluted legendary Sacramento-area developer William R. Parker for his induction into the California Homebuilding Foundation Hall of Fame, which honors members Bill Parker of the industry for lifetime achievements.

Parker, president of family-owned Parker Development Co., is responsible for some of the region’s most honored communities, including Greenhaven and Riverlake in Sacramento, The Parkway in Folsom and Serrano in El Dorado Hills.

Michael Strech, the BIA’s President and CEO, said Parker’s selection for the Hall of Fame is long overdue.

“Bill Parker’s work has been recognized with numerous national awards for design excellence and high-quality amenities, perhaps most notably Serrano’s designation in 1997 as the National Association of Home Builders National Community of the Year,” Strech said.

Oak Ridge locks down Del Oro in Friday match-up Thomas Frey Staff writer Whenever the Oak Ridge Trojans needed a big play on defense they didn’t just stop the Del Oro Golden Eagles, they sacked them for a huge loss.

When the offense needed a big chunk of yardage the Trojans didn’t get just enough for the first down, they exceeded the down marker by several yards and had five plays in the game that were longer than 20 yards.

“We just started to get our minds right and really thought about the goals we made and kind of just accomplished those as a team — and the more plays we made, the better we felt about ourselves and it just kept going,” said senior defensive end Elijah Hansen, who had three sacks and an interception at the goal line in Oak Ridge’s 34-14 victory over Del Oro Friday night in Loomis.

The win improves the Trojans to 2-2 with two games to play — home games April 9 against Granite Bay and April 16 against Folsom.

Coming off a 38-13 loss to Rocklin a week ago, the Trojans scored quickly when junior running back Reese Catchings ran the ball into the end zone to give the Trojans a lead with 9:09 to play in the opening quarter.

The Golden Eagles fought back and got on the board to cut the lead in half with 5:45 to play in the first half.

On the ensuing Trojans possession, Cowart faced a third down and 19 and he cooly passed the ball to junior Luke Armstrong, who picked up 32 yards to get to the 22-yard line.

On the next play Catchings dashed to the right and sprinted down the sideline before getting taken out of bounds at the

1-yard line.

“I took it slow in the beginning, let the offensive line get their guys and do their job and they just set it up perfectly for me,” Catchings said, “and the receivers, they just cracked the corner, brought him way inside and just made a giant lane on the sidelines for me. They really worked together and made it nice.”

Catchings next capitalized and followed his line into the end zone for the second time in the evening giving the Trojans a 20-7 lead.

“Reese is explosive; he’s a big

play guy for us,” said Oak Ridge head coach Eric Cavaliere.

The defense played stout the entire game and the sack masters came out in the second half.

Senior Peyton Vota brought down the quarterback twice, one of which he also forced a fumble recovered by senior lineman Cole Fleming. Hansen recorded two more sacks, bringing his total to three for the day. He also had an interception at the goal line in the first half.

world free from human trafficking” is the vision of 3Strands Global Foundation.

The foundation reported that California had a reported 1,500 cases of human trafficking in 2019; nationally, there were more than 118,000 victims.

3Strands began its journey of education 11 years ago in El Dorado, Sacramento and San Francisco counties after a trafficking incident that began with the kidnapping of an El Dorado Hills teen. Now the organization’s leaders push to put their message on the national stage — thus far educating people in Texas, Utah, Ohio, Michigan and Georgia. Funding and parent involvement determines what areas they are able to reach.

Anyone can be a trafficker and anyone can be a victim in this $150 billion industry, according to 3Strands President and CEO Ashlie Bryant.

“Trafficking hides in plain sight,” Bryant said.

3Strands Global Foundation works with schools through its PROTECT program. California was the first state to mandate human trafficking education through Assembly Bill 1227. Prevention education is taught to teachers who in turn teach the curriculum to their students. Topics include how to spot human traffickers and identifying signs of what to look for to protect at-risk youth from exploitation. (Are they tense, fearful? Is there a presence of or reference to an older boyfriend or girlfriend? Are they suddenly in possession of expensive material items? Do they have an unusual new tattoo, a second cell phone?)

Anyone who thinks someone might be a human-trafficking victim is cautioned not to step in if any of these signs are recognized, Bryant said, but to call the authorities.

Who is at risk? The majority of times a victim deemed more vulnerable has a higher risk of being approached. A

In another effort to bring awareness to this global problem, this March Apex Site Solutions and Legacy Telecommunications joined 3Strands Global Foundation to establish the Telecommunications Against Trafficking and Exploitation initiative to end human trafficking. The purpose is to educate individuals in the telecommunications industry so they can recognize the signs of human trafficking.

A way back Employ and Empower is 3Strands initiative that helps bring economic freedom to individuals transitioning into new lives, thereby lessening the likelihood that these human trafficking victims will fall back into the hands of predators or get back into bad habits.

“Economic insecurity is one of the main vulnerabilities exploited by traffickers and is a primary reason survivors of human trafficking return to a life of victimization,” the 3Strands website states.

3Strands works with 55 agencies that help with employing these individuals.

Locally, 46 at-risk and human-trafficking survivors have benefited from the E + E program. A local sponsor, the Rotary Club of El Dorado Hills has assisted 21 survivors by funding reintegration services for these trafficked and at-risk individuals. More than 300 and counting have been assisted in the greater Sacramento region.

It was a car club show hosted by the Foothill Cruisers that helped raise money for the construction of the playground and the sports field, according to Cameron Park Community Services District Parks and Facilities Superintendent Mike Grassle.

Uncovered during the application for CEQA documents was a historic stone wall located on the southeast corner of the park.

The skate park and playground hours may be affected and a temporary fence will prevent public access on the western half of the park. The projected timeline to completion is four to six weeks during the months of April and May. Christa McAuliffe park features a T-ball and soccer field, playground, picnic area and a skate park. Restrooms and paved parking are also available. It is easily accessible, located at 2400 Merrychase Drive in Cameron Park.

A dentistry that aims to be a home away from home

F

or patients of Dale Stanec, Jr., DDS, going to the dentist feels a little like going home.

“We know all of our patients.

They’re our friends,” said Dr. Stanec, who works alongside his wife and office manager, Elena, in his Cameron Park office. “The experience in our office is very personal. We’re very small and greet each patient by name when they walk in. It’s a comfortable, homey place to have dental work done, and we like it that way.”

Dr. Stanec has been in dentistry in the Cameron Park area since 2002. As a kid, he was “always into science and math” and loved the idea of owning his own business. “I ran a lawn-mowing business as a kid — always had some kind of business going — so becoming a dentist and owning my own practice just made sense,” said Dr. Stanec. Dr. Stanec did his undergraduate work at Cal Poly,

San Luis Obispo and then attended dental school at Northwestern University in Chicago. He graduated from Northwestern in 2001 and says that, although he was born and raised in San Jose, it was a natural draw to open his practice in the foothills.

“Elena and I love this area. We had a lot of family and friends here and thought it would be a great place to raise our kids.”

In his office, Dr. Stanec offers a full scope of general and cosmetic dentistry with expertise ranging from porcelain veneers and dental implants to crowns and bridges and more. Unlike many other dentists, Dr. Stanec doesn’t employ dental hygienists or other technicians but does all of his dental work himself.

“I spend a lot of one-on-one time with my patients. It’s fun for me to do the work myself because I get to spend more time with my patients and hang out with them and really get to know them. It makes it fun to do what I do,” said Dr. Stanec.

Another advantage of keeping his practice small is that, because he sees every patient one at a time, Dr. Stanec can be very thorough and immediately answer any questions that come up. He is also able to really respect his patients’ time. “I am almost always early or on time,” said Dr. Stanec. “My patients know that, so they’re usually early or on time for their appointments, too. It’s a win win for everyone.”

Dr. Stanec is located at 3955 Cameron Park Drive — in Cameron Park. His office is right near the Goldorado Shopping Center, directly across from the new Walgreens on Palmer Drive, and is very conveniently located for all of his patients. The move is just one more way Dr. Stanec shows his commitment to providing the best possible care for his patients.

The company first came to national attention in 1962, when NAHB named its Greenhaven project the National Community of the Year — the same honor the company later earned for Serrano. Bill completed that project after joining the family business in 1969 upon graduation from UC Davis and serving in the Army National Guard. He became company president when his father died unexpectedly in 1976.

But as Jim recalled, their “careers” began much earlier than that.

“My brothers and I worked summers side-by-side as teenagers in Greenhaven and I don’t mean in adjacent offices — I mean in adjacent ditches. We dug ditches and spread sand and cobble around Lake Greenhaven by hand and began our economics education in the process. When we asked our father, ‘Can’t you do this much faster with a tractor?’ he said, ‘Yes, about twice as fast, but you guys cost 1/10 as much and you don’t break down.’”

Like so many homebuilding leaders, Bill is also committed to giving back to his community. Through his companies and a charitable foundation he established, he has supported many local charities and nonprofits, including St. Francis High School, the Boys & Girls Clubs of El Dorado County, Lake Tahoe and Sacramento, Saint Michael’s Episcopal Day School, Sierra Forever Families, Sutter Medical Center, Mercy Foundation, 3Strands Global, UC Davis Foundation Scholarships, the YMCA of Superior California, First Tee of Sacramento, El Dorado Community Foundation and numerous charities in El Dorado County.

He has also been a generous volunteer with the BIA, serving two threeyear terms on the board of directors, and is also a member of the El Dorado County Association of Realtors, the Sacramento Metro Chamber of Commerce and the Grandfathers Club of America.

Strech noted that the developments all had significant constraints that had to be overcome, such as a high water table at Riverlake and an extensive series of wetlands and vernal pools at The Parkway. These problems were overcome by creating a lake at Riverlake and a magnificent trail and bridge system at The Parkway.

“But Bill really demonstrated his vision and his ability as a problem solver at Serrano. A drought had caused El Dorado County to declare a water emergency. To overcome the challenge, Parker’s team created the largest recycled water system in California to irrigate the golf course and landscaped public areas — a concept now used by developers around the country. The system saves a billion gallons a year of fresh water in El Dorado County,” Strech added.

Parker said he was honored to be selected and proud of the communities his family and their long-serving team have developed.

“I deeply appreciate this honor from the California Homebuilding Foundation,” Parker said. “I have spent most of my life dedicated to the company and our developments. I, along with my brothers and team, have worked diligently to create communities and amenities for people to enjoy for generations to come. When I drive though one of our neighborhoods and see families walking with strollers, children biking or how the natural landscapes are woven between the homes, I can feel proud of what we’ve have created.”

His brother, Jim Parker, the company’s vice president, said Bill Parker has truly been a visionary who has also created a family who has worked together to make his visions a reality.

“I was basically shutting down,” she said of the watershed event that led to her journey back to the living and her new business venture, IV Lounge.

Before her illness was identified as Lyme disease in 2010, doctors mistakenly diagnosed her symptoms as a host of other ailments, including rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, depression and non-specific ALS. Even after diagnosis, Lyme disease is notoriously difficult to treat since it manifests itself differently in each individual.

“Because the spirochete organism can live in any cell in your body, heart, muscle, tissue, bone, brain, it can mimic a lot of different things,” Mencarini explained.

With a compromised immune system, Mencarini struggled with illness after illness, enduring numerous emergency room visits and hospitalizations. It

In 2012 one doctor discovered a Chiari malformation in Mencarini’s brain and performed cranial decompression surgery, allowing her to walk and breathe again on her own. Since then, she has undergone hyperthermia, chemotherapy and plasmapheresis to combat her Lyme disease — all of which have contributed to her body’s healing.

“Having access to intravenous vitamin therapy and hydration saved my life until I could find doctors that would treat me rather than write me off,” she said of the infusions that she continues to this day. The IV Lounge concept was conceived to help others obtain

Having endured expensive visits and long out-of-area drives for her treatments, Mencarini seeks to bring a more accessible IV experience to El Dorado County. With the required doctor’s exams, she was forking over $400 to $500 per trip.

“I vowed to bring this type of service to our area if I ever regained my health again so others wouldn’t have to go through what I did.”

After meeting naturopath Ha Dang, ND, LAc at a Marin County clinic, Mencarini approached Dang with the idea to co-found IV Lounge. The two recently began offering IV therapy at Delta Family Chiropractic in Cameron Park on

Fridays and Saturdays, with plans to offer services at an El Dorado Hills location in June.

An El Dorado Hills Town Center storefront open seven days a week is slated for early 2022.

Several county road projects bumped ahead

Dawn Hodson Staff writer Additions and changes to West Slope road and bridge capital improvement projects, including advancing several projects into fiscal year 2021-22, were adopted by the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors last month.

These projects are ones that have had changes in construction start date or cost. They include extending Country Club Drive from El Dorado Hills Boulevard to Silva Valley Parkway; Phase 2B of improvements to the Highway 50 interchange at El Dorado Hills Boulevard; realignment of North Shingle and Durock roads near the Highway 50 interchange at Ponderosa Road; and improvements at the Highway 50 interchange at Ponderosa and South Shingle roads.

New projects approved included rehabilitating approximately 6 miles of Ice House Road from Highway 50 to Peavine Ridge Road — the end point of the previous Ice House Road rehabilitation project. El Dorado County Department of Transportation staff is currently preparing a grant application to request federal funding from the Federal Highway Administration’s Central Federal Lands Highway Division Federal Lands Access Program to support the project. The FLAP grant requires a minimum non-federal match requirement in which DOT staff requests $3,527,500 in Sacramento Municipal Utility District funds as the match funds. The estimated cost of the project is $6,955,000 with FLAP grant funds providing $3,427,500 and SMUD funds providing $3,527,500. Staff will bring an item to the board in April for consid-

Daffodils and crocuses are putting on their annual show in the Sierra foothills. Any day, the California poppies will begin their show that will last through the summer.

With nearly a third of California’s population now vaccinated (at the time of this writing) and with the hope of society attaining herd immunity, art galleries and museums are cautiously opening once again to the public.

One of the first galleries to reopen this month is The Gallery at 48 Natoma in Folsom, with “Carousel” in its main gallery. This exhibit was slated to open last year but was canceled by the COVID-19 shutdown.

This time, visitors can figuratively “grab the brass ring” at this exhibit featuring spectacular photography of carousels from all over the world by Jim Berger and fantastic carousel horse sculptures by Thelma White. An interesting selection of carousel artifacts will also be included. The exhibit opens April 16 and continues through July 1.

Likewise, the Folsom History Museum is reopening this month, albeit at reduced capacity. The permanent exhibits of local history are back.

Youngsters can learn about the region’s first residents, the Nisenan people, and then learn of the additional contributions of the many people who came to our area during the Gold Rush era. The stories of ranchers, Chinese gold miners, the adventures of the Pony Express riders and many others are highlighted — right up to the mid-20th century.

Still chugging The California State Railroad Museum reopens this month. This gorgeous museum is home to 225,000 square feet of exhibits and beautifully restored railroad cars and locomotives which illustrate railroad history in California and the West. Crocker is back The famous Crocker Art Museum in downtown Sacramento reopens April 8.

“We are eager to welcome the community back to the Crocker for new joyful, thought-provoking, and engaging art experiences,” said Lial A. Jones, the museum’s Mort and Marcy Friedman director and CEO. “I believe now more than ever that art has an enduring ability to bring comfort, respite, joy and a deeper understanding of ourselves and one another.”

The museum will be open four days a week, Thursday through Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. To help ensure health and comfort, entry will be by timed ticket. Each Sunday, beginning April 11 through May 31, is Welcome Back Sundays with free admission sponsored by Western Health Advantage.

Season of hope This year April began with the conclusion of Passover and the beginning of the Easter season. Let us hope that these reopenings foretell the return of many more of the institutions and events our region is so well known for. Happy spring!

ow! What a beginning quarter of 2021! As our region gradually moves out of the pandemic, our community and businesses continue to innovate, transform and thrive once again. Emerging out of a global pandemic at the end of 2020, we walked through the first quarter of 2021 with hope, resilience, and an evergrowing determination to succeed. And while the road has been difficult, I know the “We Will!” movement in our communities has evoked a determination to persevere and thrive. And your Shingle Springs/Cameron Park Chamber of Commerce is behind each one of you 100%!

In the first quarter of 2021, the Chamber hosted webinars with the Small Business Development Council, providing vital information to business owners on financial resources available to them amid the pandemic. In February, local mental health expert, Nancy Ryan, MA, LMFT, presented an informative presentation, discussing ways to keep emotionally ‘fit’ during these trying times.

And last month the Chamber featured local State Farm agent, JD Snead, who discussing pertinent insurance issues facing local businesses today.

If you own a small business, we cordially invite you to attend our monthly luncheon engagements, which are developed with the local business owner in mind.

We feel getting out in front of our membership businesses is the best way to understand how the Chamber can advocate for them.

APRIL Events April (Fridays to Sundays) – CP Rotary Club Observatory From 8:30pm to 10:30 pm, weather permitting, the observatory is open to the public on weekend evenings.

New Website: We are working on a revamp of our website, which will include an easier way to pay membership fees and keep up to date on what is happening in our region.

Advocacy: We will continue to collaborate with other local chambers and advocacy groups to ensure we are bringing relevant and pertinent information to our membership businesses.

New Administrative Assistant! We are thrilled to announce the addition of Kathy Block as the Chamber’s new Administrative Assistant. While Kathy is not new to the chamber, we are excited to have her back. Kathy has a passion for the Chamber’s mission and its members. As I have mentioned in previous messages, our Chamber is in a phase of restructuring and rebuilding. As a 501(c)6 organization, we have not been eligible for any grants or loans ourselves; everything our Chamber does to support local business is only made possible by our membership.

We truly appreciate the members who have stood by our side and continued to support the Shingle Springs/ Cameron Park Chamber of Commerce. Our future and the resilience of our region and the success of its local businesses depend on our “We Will!” mentality. Together, we are strong. Together, we will endeavor. Together we will succeed.
