ith a poise and confidence, Oak Ridge High School junior Analise Gutierrez holds some unusual accomplishments in her back pocket. She is the first girl in El Dorado Hills to achieve the Scout BSA Eagle Scout rank, on top of already earning her Girl Scout Gold Award. Having joined Girl Scouts as a kindergartener, Gutierrez was firmly entrenched in the program as a high school freshman when her brother returned from his Scouts summer camp. “He just kept talking about how fun it was,” she remembered. So Gutierrez joined a local troop accepting girls, Troop 1855 in Folsom. Scouts BSA, formerly Boy Scouts of America, began admitting girls in February 2019. Troop 1855, under ■

CPCSD board member sought It’s an election year for the Cameron Park Community Services District Board of Directors and three of the five positions will be on the ballot this November. Would you be interested in becoming a board member? Perhaps the better question is why would you want to serve as a CSD board member? Serving on the board is a great way to be involved in the direction and future of the district. The CSD is a quality-of-life organization providing quality parks facilities, exciting recreational opportunities, fire response and prevention services, emergency response and advanced life-support services and enforcement of local covenants, conditions and restrictions via an active CC&R program. By being an active participant on the board of directors you can help guide the district as it strives to meet the needs of its residents. Here’s a few things you should know: • Must be at least 18 years of age. • Must be a registered voter within the Cameron Park Community Services District boundaries. • Candidates will need to file declaration of candidacy and nomination papers with El Dorado County. • If elected, you would serve a four-year term.

Join the Splash Pad Fundraising Committee The Cameron Park Community Services District will install a splash pad at Cameron Park Lake later this year. The facility will provide exciting water play during warmer months for all ages, especially children. The CSD is looking for supportive community members to participate in its Fundraising Committee. Raising funds to offset the cost of this project will help reduce the financial impact on the district’s capital improvement project budget, which is needed to fund other important park improvement projects in the district. By joining the Fundraising Committee, you would play a vital role in helping businesses and individuals participate in making the Cameron Park Lake Splash Pad a true community effort. E. Coleman. “Due to the usual delinquency date of April 10 falling on a Sunday, taxpayers have an additional few days to pay this year,” noted Coleman.

To pay online or to find answers to the most frequently asked property tax questions, access the website edcgov.us/ taxcollector. Taxpayers can also view or print copies of their tax bills from this website. Electronic check and credit card payments made through this website are accepted as timely if paid before midnight April 11. Accepted cards include Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express. Heritage residents in El Dorado Hills took to the sidewalk last week to protest the lights installed at Heritage Park. The El Dorado Hills Community Services District had planned to conduct a light test last week but the event was postponed. Residents argue the lights will impact their quality of life. “You cannot imagine how stressful it is with these park lights turned on. My appeals to Lennar and CSD have been ignored and I know that I could never get any rest if these lights remain and are left on any amount of time at night,” Heritage resident Charlene Kammerer told Village Life. “These lights were not there when I bought my home. I can assure you that the Lennar salesperson never told me the park would have big bright lights, only that it would be a nice park for my grandchildren.”

A dentistry that aims to be a home away from home

or patients of Dale Stanec, Jr., DDS, going to the dentist feels a little like going home.

“We know all of our patients. They’re our friends,” said Dr. Stanec, who works alongside his wife and office manager, Elena, in his Cameron Park office. “The experience in our office is very personal. We’re very small and greet each patient by name when they walk in. It’s a comfortable, homey place to have dental work done, and we like it that way.” Dr. Stanec has been in dentistry in the Cameron Park area since 2002. As a kid, he was “always into science and math” and loved the idea of owning his own business. “I ran a lawn-mowing business as a kid — always had some kind of business going — so becoming a dentist and owning my own practice just made sense,” said Dr. Stanec. Dr. Stanec did his undergraduate work at Cal Poly,

San Luis Obispo and then attended dental school at Northwestern University in Chicago. He graduated from Northwestern in 2001 and says that, although he was born and raised in San Jose, it was a natural draw to open his practice in the foothills. “Elena and I love this area. We had a lot of family and friends here and thought it would be a great place to raise our kids.”

In his office, Dr. Stanec offers a full scope of general and cosmetic dentistry with expertise ranging from porcelain veneers and dental implants to crowns and bridges and more. Unlike many other dentists, Dr. Stanec doesn’t employ dental hygienists or other technicians but does all of his dental work himself. “I spend a lot of one-on-one time with my patients. It’s fun for me to do the work myself because I get to spend more time with my patients and hang out with them and really get to know them. It makes it fun to do what I do,” said Dr. Stanec.

Another advantage of keeping his practice small is that, because he sees every patient one at a time, Dr. Stanec can be very thorough and immediately answer any questions that come up. He is also able to really respect his patients’ time. “I am almost always early or on time,” said Dr. Stanec. “My patients know that, so they’re usually early or on time for their appointments, too. It’s a win win for everyone.” Dr. Stanec is located at 3955 Cameron Park Drive — in Cameron Park. His office is right near the Goldorado Shopping Center, directly across from the new Walgreens on Palmer Drive, and is very conveniently located for all of his patients. The move is just one more way Dr. Stanec shows his commitment to providing the best possible care for his patients.

By incorporating a digital watch, businesses and residents will be able to stay connected via an online network called Neighbors and instantly receive crime and safety alerts. During the planned safety fair, CCOCP members will answer questions and provide additional information on how residents can participate in the program. Window decals and yard signs will also be given to residents who join to publicly display their participation. For residents who qualify and do not own a security camera, vouchers will be given to help offset the cost of adding one to their home. The safety fair will be held 1-4 p.m. Saturday, April 30, at 3392 Coach Lane in Cameron Park. CCOCP was founded by resident Coleen Hearn in 2020 with the purpose to better the Cameron Park community and events held throughout the year do just that. Annually they partner with a community program to assist folks during the holidays. FINANCIAL FOCUS Women may need financial ‘catch-up’

t’s unfortunate but true: If you’re a woman, you face more obstacles than men in achieving financial security. And that means you may well need to put in some extra effort. Just how serious is your challenge? For one thing, women still face a gender pay gap — based on median incomes, women earn about 82 cents for every dollar a man makes, according to the Census Bureau. This pay gap amounts to a nearly $470,000 difference in lifetime earnings, according to an Edward Jones/Age Wave study. Furthermore, when factoring in the career disruptions women face because of caring for children and elderly parents, that $470,000 becomes a $1.1 million lifetime earnings gap, according to the study. Finally, women tend to live longer than men, meaning their lifetime earnings must last longer. Everyone’s situation is different, but these figures at least point to the challenges many women encounter. To help yourself, consider these moves:

You always have to pay your bills — but, at the same time, pay yourself by moving money automatically from your checking account each month into a low-risk, liquid vehicle, such as a money market account or some type of cash management account connected with your investment portfolio. This move can help give you a “bucket” of money to use for any reason, such as the need to step away from your job to care for children or aging parents. • Increase your 401(k) contributions each year. If you have a 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored retirement plan, take full advantage of it. At a minimum, contribute enough to earn your employer’s match, if one

is offered, and increase your contributions every year or every time your salary increases. • Fully fund your IRA. Even if you contribute to a 401(k), you may still be eligible to invest in an IRA — and you should. You can put in up to $6,000 per year to a traditional or Roth IRA or $7,000 if you’re 50 or older. (However, a Roth IRA does have income limitations that may prevent you from contributing the full amount.) • Learn about Social Security options. Because Social Security provides a lifetime income stream that includes cost-ofliving increases, it can help mitigate two key risks you face in retirement: longer life expectancies and inflation. You can start taking Social Security as early as age 62, but your monthly checks will be significantly larger if you wait until your “full” retirement age, which will likely be between 66 and 67. If you delay taking benefits beyond your full retirement age, your payments will increase by 8% per year, until age 70, when your benefits max out. The El Dorado Local Agency Formation Commission will consider the appointment of a public member to LAFCO to serve a new four-year term, May 2022 through May 2026. The public member represents the interests of El Dorado County residents. Applicants must be a resident and a registered voter in El Dorado County and cannot be a city, district or county official of any public agency within El Dorado County. County seeks $28k in overpayment to former HR leader Eric Jaramishian Staff writer El Dorado County is seeking reimbursement from a former human resources director after she was mistakenly paid $28,149 for unused sick time. County Auditor-Controller Joe Harn said his office didn’t catch the mistake when cutting Tameka Usher’s last paycheck, issued April 2, 2021. Usher came on board in July 2017 and left El Dorado County in February 2021 for a human resources job with the city of Rocklin. Chief Administrative Officer Don Ashton said when a department head resigns before five years of service

they are not entitled to any compensation of unused sick leave. After Usher’s resignation, an administrative technician completed a computation of final wages due form, which was reviewed by a fiscal manager, an agency chief fiscal officer and Usher herself before the payment was processed by the Auditor-Controller’s Office. “Ultimately, you can blame me,” Harn said. “I want the Board of Supervisors and the public to know about it. “I’m hoping the county aggressively seeks the reimbursement of this money.” “The law is very clear — if there is an overpayment on a check to a person, the public sector organization

is required to collect that money,” Ashton told Village Life. The CAO said the error was caught by current Human Resources Director Joseph Carruesco, who then notified Harn. “I think it was simply an oversight by everyone who looked at it,” Ashton said. “It is a big oversight and I don’t want to dismiss that, but it was an oversight.” The county’s chief financial officer called the former department head on Feb. 23, explaining the situation and requesting reimbursement on behalf of the taxpayers of El Dorado County. Sourcing fertilizer We got the straw bales home and set them up in our SBG yard. Then we turned to the next step: conditioning the bales. This involves the use of nitrogen fertilizer to compost the straw. This is important, because raw straw will pull nutrients out of young plants and seedlings. However, conditioned straw will provide nutrients to your plants. (For a SBG, avoid fertilizers with pre-emergents if you plan to grow with seeds). That’s when the next revelation hit: there is a nationwide fertilizer shortage. To be honest, I learned about this one from ranchers while standing in line at the feed store. I learned that the nitrogen fertilizers American farmers use to grow the most crops per acre are made from natural gas. A German chemist won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1918 when he developed this process.

The method revolutionized agriculture and saved generations of people from starvation. Who knew? Prices for fertilizer began to climb as soon as American fracking was cut back. When Green New Deal advocates cut off natural gas production here, I guess they didn’t know this would impact the actual growing of green new things. For now, nitrogen-rich lawn fertilizer is available for home gardens at local hardware stores, albeit at a higher price. We stocked up on several bags and a few bags of well-rounded fertilizer with added potassium and phosphorus to finish off the conditioning process.

Plant items you will actually eat. I plan to grow basil, mint, Swiss chard, beets, fresh peas, cucumbers, tomatoes, zucchini, yellow squash and spaghetti squash. Strawberries are an easy fruit to grow. So are melons. Heirloom crops will produce seed for next year, too. “The art of life lies in a constant readjustment to our surroundings,” wrote Okakura Kakuzo, a 19th century Japanese scholar and author of “The Book of Tea.” An avid gardener in his own right, he also said, “A garden is a friend you can visit anytime.” A veggie garden is good for the spirit. aul Frampton has followed his passion for more than 34 years, practicing and teaching martial arts to adults and children throughout El Dorado and Placer counties. Today, he continues to share his craft with students at his brand-new 7-Elementz Wellness Studio, located at 5005 Windplay Drive in El Dorado Hills. He told Village Life he named the studio after seven principles: health awareness, physical proficiency, Mental proficiency, weapons proficiency, disarmament proficiency, grappling proficiency and striking proficiency. Frampton’s new endeavor is something he said he has been considering for quite some time. “It is something that I have always wanted to do,” he shared. “Something that nobody else does.” To Frampton, his teachings are more than just martial art movements. While he offers everything from Jujitsu, to boxing to self-defense and karate, his primary goal is to not just teach techniques but to help improve his clients’ health and mindset. Each private session is tailored toward the participant. He takes great pride in his teaching of Adaptive, Therapeutic Karate, endorsed by the Alta Regional Center, a private, nonprofit corporation that provides services to individuals with developmental disabilities. Through his program, Frampton works with individuals who have varying disabilities and challenges, such as cerebral palsy, autism, ADHD, among others. A full child assessment is given in order to create the best wellness plan. He will even work with school IPPs and IEPs. The intent of ATK Intervention is to address each individual’s need. ow! The 1st quarter of 2022 is now behind us and I am thrilled with the direction our Chamber is going. We have seen increased participation from our amazing members, new business coming into our community and established businesses beginning to once again thrive as the state re-opened. It has been so great to see everyone’s smiling faces again (not behind a mask). Our March luncheon was sponsored by Pioneer Energy and our guest speaker was Assemblyman Kevin Kiley that provided an update on some important items in the legislature. It was our highest attendance since before the pandemic began We hosted a well-attended mixer at The Stage in Burke Junction. The owner, Bill Glasser, is thrilled to once again have the community theatre operational. It’s a great venue and you should check out their deals for a season pass. Our Board of Directors approved the implementation of a Restaurant of the Month program that highlights a new restaurant member each month. To kick off the program is Wally’s Pizza Bar. Stop by during the month of April and tell them the Chamber sent you! Our April luncheon on 4/27, sponsored by Project Blue, will have Don Ashton, CAO of El Dorado County , providing us information on the state of the county. You aren’t going to want to miss this one.
