Jana Rossi Staff writer The Nextdoor website can be used for a variety of useful purposes — recommendations on who to call for home repairs, finding a lost dog, posting interesting pictures taken by amateur photographers. At its best, Nextdoor has become a place where the good in people can be brought together to help their community. El Dorado Hills resident and retired attorney William Barry saw Nextdoor as such a place and has used it to connect with other likeminded individuals — those looking to help families who face financial hardship in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. The idea to get involved began to form after his wife’s consulting job shut down in January and the Barrys received an unexpected unemployment check. Not realizing an independent contractor was entitled to this benefit, they decided they would like to help other families who were hit hard during the pandemic and subsequent shutdowns. After posting on Nextdoor their plans, they were immediately inundated with neighbors who wanted to join their efforts. Discussions on where to find families in need led the group to seek out pastors, school principals and counselors — those directly involved with families that would fit the group’s two critical n
