A
mong the tens of thousands of high school students who auditioned across the state, only the most accomplished musicians are selected to perform in the California All-State Honor Band. Two of Oak Ridge High School’s own, Ellie Chen and Jiajin Huang, were among the elite few. “I started playing flute in fourth grade because band was an option as an elective,” recounted Huang, a junior at Oak Ridge who didn’t start lessons until the end of her sixth-grade year. Huang moved to El Dorado Hills in first grade from Taiwan. “I find it funny because the only reason I chose flute was that my friends decided to do flute.” Chen, in her senior year at Oak Ridge, grew up in El Dorado Hills and remembers her mom prompting her to choose an instrument in fourth grade. “I remember thinking that the flute players in Chinese dramas looked really cool,” she said. “So I decided on the flute.” Huang participated in the Wind Symphony ensemble while Chen played in the Concert Band. BUS BURSTS INTO FLAMES

El Dorado Hills Fire Department firefighters put out flames in a school bus fire Friday on El Dorado Hills Boulevard under Highway 50. Fire department officials reported all students were safely evacuated off the bus. Another bus picked up the Buckeye USD students and took them to their bus stops. The fire was reported at about 3:30 p.m. The cause of the fire remains unknown.
