In it for the long haul Dear Anne: I’m a 49-year-old who has been dating and living with my girlfriend for almost one year now. I’m madly in love with her, and she says the same. We have talked about marriage, and I would love to, but she keeps saying no. She went through a 25-year marriage that she thought would last forever. She had been single for a few years, until the time we started dating. When we talk about it, she says her fear is that, one day, I will leave her, too. I can’t get her to understand that I’m not like that, and she would have to try hard to push me away. What can I do or say to ease her mind? — Confused and In Love Dear Confused and In Love: It sounds like she is traumatized from the abandonment she suffered during her first marriage. She is frozen with fear, anticipating that what happened to her the first time will happen again. As a couple, communication is key. Rather than trying to “get her to understand” that you’re not like that, listen to her concerns. Then, instead of pressuring her to do something she does not feel comfortable with, try creating some future plans. Continue to express what your needs are, and allow her to express her needs, without trying to change her. And encourage her to seek professional help for her trauma. It sounds like she is hurting. ——— Dear Annie: This is for “Unheard Girlfriend,” the woman whose future husband doesn’t help with the housework even though they both work, while she also does the majority of the child care tasks. Years ago, I had a very good male friend with whom I spent a lot of time. We watched ball games while his wife spent the evening doing household chores. It frustrated me that he didn’t help, so I presented it to him as follows: I just don’t get why, if you really love someone, you’d want them to work full time like you, and then spend the evening working while you sit here enjoying yourself. If you both share the work, then you’ll have more time to enjoy each other and she won’t be so exhausted. It worked! After that, he took pride in showing me the list of chores she’d given him to accomplish while she was gone

Legals@DavisEnterprise.net at work. (Like many men, he’d grown up in a house where housework was not expected of him, so he needed guidance). Everyone dirties things, so everyone should learn to clean up after themselves. — Friend Who Needed a Nudge Dear Nudge: You sound like a very good friend. Sometimes, we need friends or family — or advice columnists — in our lives who see our blind spots and point them out in a productive manner. It might sting in the moment for a little but will be much better in the long run to know the truth. Bravo to you.
Woes,” where the husband of the disabled daughter is not invited to the wedding. This is wrong on every level. But if the daughter really wants to go, perhaps her husband could assist her with the arrangements and travel but not attend the wedding. (Perhaps her mom could take over during the ceremony and reception.) Then the daughter and her husband could enjoy a few days on vacation and turn a “challenging” trip into something fun. The wedding only lasts a couple of hours, but the fun vacation memories could last a lifetime. — Making the Best of It Dear Making the Best of It: Thank you for your letter and the advice to take a possibly distressing event and make it work for everyone. When life gives you lemons make some lemonade and enjoy.
Employer doesn’t care Closing the book on childish behavior Dear Annie: My stepmother is the epitome of a wicked stepmother. My sister and I are grown and have our own lives and families. Our father married “Mary.” We believe it was out of loneliness. She is 15 years younger than him and has a drinking problem. She says the drinking is under control, but it is quite clear it isn’t. She has a record for driving under the influence and for drug possession charges. Again, we were told it was all under control. My sister and I have been ignored, talked about, lied about and made to feel unwelcome in our dad’s home. However, we put all that aside because our dad said he was happy and that she took care of him. We continued to try and get along with Mary. The problem is that he is seriously ill now after having his second stroke, and she is being very cruel and secretive with information and updates on our dad’s health. She has said more than once, “He is my husband.” So? He is and always will be my dad and my responsibility. I’ve tried to explain that this not the time for childish drama; we need to come together and do what’s best for our dad. But she slams the door in our face every time. I am not walking away from my dad. What is the resolution here? When our dad gets out of the hospital, he does not need this. What do I do? — Emotionally Drained Dear Emotionally Drained: First, I am very sorry about your dad’s stroke. May his recovery and rehabilitation be easy. Second, I’m sorry to hear that your relationship with your stepmother is so strained. You don’t deserve to be treated rudely, and “Mary” does not own your father. However, let’s take a look at who’s being childish here. You’ve labeled Mary a “wicked stepmother,” cite her history of addiction as a moral failing and fault her for wanting to take care of her husband. I agree with you. It’s time to set aside the dramatics and focus on what matters here — your dad’s health. If you’re willing to own where you’ve been at fault in this not-so-happily ever after, your “wicked” stepmom might do the same. However, if your stepmom continues to keep her husband from his children, that could constitute abusive behavior. Your best option would be to find an attorney to advise you on your options. Dear Annie: I’d like to comment on the letter from “Wedding
Dear Annie: I’ve been at my current job for nearly 10 years. But over the last year, I’ve become very discouraged, as the pandemic has helped to shine a bright light on my employer’s true character. He has asked us to work in unsafe conditions this entire pandemic, exposing us to risk every day so that he can continue to rake in money through his business. The greed and lack of regard for his employees has been truly eye-opening. Even now that we’re seemingly pretty close to a return to “normalcy,” and I won’t have to worry about health on the job, I can’t forgive him for how he acted throughout this whole thing. Before this past year, I had a great deal of respect for this person and enjoyed my job. I had a lot of pride in working for the person I thought he was. This realization of his true character has very much soured my perspective and motivation going forward. Do I quit, or do I honestly tell my boss how disappointed I am? At the end of the day, he is only about the dollar, and the show he puts on pretending to care is all lies. He has gone to extreme measures to protect only himself and could care less about us. How can I continue to work for someone who is only in it for himself? — Employee for the Moment Dear Employee: This may be a silly question, but I have to ask: Did you let your boss know (in writing) that you feel unsafe in the current conditions? If not, that should be your first order of business. If he continues to disregard your safety even after you’ve expressed your concern, then document his negligence as thoroughly as possible. On Jan. 21, 2021, the White House issued an executive order on Protecting Worker Health and Safety, which may entitle you to further protections and recourse. It’s worth talking to an employment lawyer for guidance on next steps. Legal facets aside, to your ultimate question of how you continue working for a person who has made it clear he cares more about his wealth than his employees’ health: Crisis reveals character, and now that your boss showed his true colors, it will be hard to unsee them. Looking for a new job is a wise idea. It’s prudent to secure another position before leaving your current one. ——— Dear Annie: I got hung up on your response to “Unheard Girlfriend,” who wrote to you about her boyfriend. She said they “have one child together and one on the way” and that she was
