Ponderosa FFA students return to competition Allyson Jolly Ponderosa FFA Ponderosa’s Future Farmers of America chapter has been in a competition lull since last summer; thanks to technology and tenacity, several of its members recently brought students back ... and the long road was worth it as several members are moving on to SADIE ALGER the next level.

Sadie Alger, a sophomore, placed third in the Sacramento Section Impromptu Public Speaking event and is moving on to the Central Region competition. The purpose of the Impromptu Public Speaking Career Development Event is to develop the speaking abilities of FFA members as well as develop their selfconfidence and contribute SHANNON SCALES to their advancement in interpersonal skill attainment and leadership development. The event allows students to demonstrate their ability, with limited preparation time, to compose and deliver coherent and focused oral presentations.

A

local teacher turned to the video sharing app Tik Tok to teach her students the importance of giving back and thus far has raised more than $50,000 for Shriners Hospitals for Children.

Miss Sutherd’s popular Tik Tok videos she calls “Oh Crap Moments” describe “the moments in teaching when kids say or do the oddest, silliest and/or inappropriate things that you’re not quite sure how to react to.” They have gained a large

following noticed by her fourth-grade class. That’s when her students handed her a challenge — get a shout-out from actor Jack Black. Amused, she shared the challenge on Tik Tok and was flooded with “Hi Miss Sutherds,” not only from Black, but other celebrities and athletes from major sports across the board.

Amassing more than 50 million views and gaining 1 million followers in one night, Miss Sutherd turned the tables and presented her class with her own challenge — exchange tickets they earned in n

Teachers line up for vaccine Sel Richard Staff writer Teachers took priority Saturday at the El Dorado Hills Fire Department’s latest COVID-19 vaccination clinic, during which paramedics inoculated 440 local educators and 265 senior citizens with the Moderna vaccine.

“We knew there was a gap for teachers to get vaccinated and that’s a statewide priority right now,” said Deputy Chief Mike Lilienthal, who pitched the idea to El Dorado County Emergency Operations Center staff and coordinated with the El Dorado County Office of Education. “We’re well on the pathway to getting all our teachers taken care of.

It’s a really cool thing.”

Several district superintendents were on hand to volunteer, including Rescue Union School District’s Cheryl Olson.

“It’s been such a wonderful opportunity to be in our community and just see how happy people are,” she said, making sure paramedics had vaccines at the ready. “Everyone is so relieved and feeling that much safer.”

With RUSD schools opening full time on March 4, the event was a boon for many.

Buckeye Union School District Superintendent Dr. David Roth said he hopes all his district’s employees who are requesting vaccinations will have received their first dose by the end of the week, in time for that district’s fulltime opening March 15.

CSD lists priorities The Cameron Park Community Services District held a strategic planning meeting Feb. 24, at which time the results of a community survey were shared.

CPCSD Recreation Supervisor Whitney Kahn updated the board on community concerns. The top issue is growth/development followed by parks, Cameron Park Lake and public health/safety (all of which tied for second).

The board, CSD staff and a consultant are writing a new strategic plan. Thus far they have completed the Mission, Vision and Values statements.

Leaders see bright future for SS/CP Chamber Andrew Vonderschmitt Staff writer Rebecca Endres, director of customer relations at Kniesel’s Collision and longtime Shingle Springs/ Cameron Park Chamber of Commerce member, was installed as board president back in November 2020.

With a focus on board development and close scrutiny of defining documents, Endres said she wants to get the chamber back into full gear. Having served as secretary for several years she was a clear choice to further the organization’s mission to “advocate, promote and preserve the quality of life in (the) chamber community by means of a strong, healthy and diverse business community.”

“The first thing I want to accomplish is to be a more viable resource to our membership,” said Endres, who took the president’s role after the previous president resigned due to health issues.

To accomplish that, the new president said the chamber needs to address how to stay relevant to the membership, how to represent the membership in the community and politically and how to serve as a community resource.

Colette Thiel will serve as board vice president. A recent transplant and owner of Thiel Real Estate & Property Management, Thiel joined the chamber as soon as she arrived in the area. Soon thereafter she was asked to serve as a chamber ambassador. Endres said she recognized Thiel’s experience and ability to serve the chamber in a positive way and asked her to join the board in 2020.

With a relatively new board of directors, the path seemed clear to Endres — improve the chamber services and grow the membership.

With chamber consultant Fred Ott, who founded the chamber nearly 45 years ago, sharing a wealth of knowledge that will help move the chamber forward, both Thiel and Endres said they see many opportunities for improvement to the chamber and how it serves its members.

“By bringing our membership and users into the 21st century with a robust social media presence and utilization of online document sharing, we can better serve our membership both in the public relations arena and with quick communication with members on important issues they might be facing,” Endres said.

Losing a full-time staff person when COVID-19 hit made it difficult to accomplish day-to-day tasks in the office leaves the chamber in yet another position for reinvention. With upward of 150 members the chamber is representing a large portion of the business community in Cameron Park and Shingle Springs and leaders plan to be available as often and as quickly as possible to

their membership.

Despite the challenges facing them, Endres and Thiel said they see a bright future for Cameron Park’s and Shingle Springs’ economic climate. Implementing and maintaining new standards of administration and communication will help them to move forward, serving their constituents and accomplishing their collective mission.

A dentistry that aims to be a home away from home

F

or patients of Dale Stanec, Jr., DDS, going to the dentist feels a little like going home.

“We know all of our patients.

They’re our friends,” said Dr. Stanec, who works alongside his wife and office manager, Elena, in his Cameron Park office. “The experience in our office is very personal. We’re very small and greet each patient by name when they walk in. It’s a comfortable, homey place to have dental work done, and we like it that way.”

Dr. Stanec has been in dentistry in the Cameron Park area since 2002. As a kid, he was “always into science and math” and loved the idea of owning his own business. “I ran a lawn-mowing business as a kid — always had some kind of business going — so becoming a dentist and owning my own practice just made sense,” said Dr. Stanec. Dr. Stanec did his undergraduate work at Cal Poly,

San Luis Obispo and then attended dental school at Northwestern University in Chicago. He graduated from Northwestern in 2001 and says that, although he was born and raised in San Jose, it was a natural draw to open his practice in the foothills.

“Elena and I love this area. We had a lot of family and friends here and thought it would be a great place to raise our kids.”

In his office, Dr. Stanec offers a full scope of general and cosmetic dentistry with expertise ranging from porcelain veneers and dental implants to crowns and bridges and more. Unlike many other dentists, Dr. Stanec doesn’t employ dental hygienists or other technicians but does all of his dental work himself.

“I spend a lot of one-on-one time with my patients. It’s fun for me to do the work myself because I get to spend more time with my patients and hang out with them and really get to know them. It makes it fun to do what I do,” said Dr. Stanec.

Another advantage of keeping his practice small is that, because he sees every patient one at a time, Dr. Stanec can be very thorough and immediately answer any questions that come up. He is also able to really respect his patients’ time. “I am almost always early or on time,” said Dr. Stanec. “My patients know that, so they’re usually early or on time for their appointments, too. It’s a win win for everyone.”

Dr. Stanec is located at 3955 Cameron Park Drive — in Cameron Park. His office is right near the Goldorado Shopping Center, directly across from the new Walgreens on Palmer Drive, and is very conveniently located for all of his patients. The move is just one more way Dr. Stanec shows his commitment to providing the best possible care for his patients.

“I look forward to going to work and getting to see who’s on the schedule every day,” said Dr. Stanec.

FFA members collect warm clothes for locals in need News release The FFA motto — Learning to Do, Doing to Learn, Earning to Live, Living to Serve — has been a little tougher to accomplish with COVID-19 hampering in-person activities. In most years Sacramento section chapters like those at Ponderosa and Union Mine high schools would have put in countless hours at community service events from the Apple Hill Smorgi to the Hands4Hope Fall Festival in El Dorado Hills.

But this is very far from a typical year so “living to serve” has taken a bit of ingenuity and a recent stroke of creativity not only supported El Dorado County, but also supported multiple agencies throughout the FFA’s Sacramento area.

Allyson Jolly of Ponderosa FFA, currently serving as the Sacramento Section’s vice president, meets with other officers from Union Mine, Elk Grove and Liberty Ranch numerous times a month over Zoom to develop programming for their members.

Opportunities have ranged from leadership development by meeting with national representatives to college preparation by delivering a webinar on scholarships, all over Zoom. Before the holidays the team members wanted to ensure that one month of their term was dedicated to community service.

How do they do that when nine of the 11 chapters are attending school virtually? A drive of some sort seemed the most logical and this is where Jolly chimed in with a generous idea. Jolly is not only an active member of FFA, but also a volunteer with the locally origi-

nated nonprofit Warm Winters.

Warm Winters originated at Kirkwood Ski Resort in 2011 when young ski team member Corrine Hindes came up with the idea to take the warm hats, coats, gloves and scarves left in the ski resort’s lost-andfound and donate the clothing to a local homeless shelter. Over the years the organization grew to include ski resorts around the world, including several in Lake Tahoe. COVID-19 put the program on hold this year so Jolly approached her fellow officers with the idea to do a section-wide warm clothing drive, giving each chapter an opportunity to support their local communities.

The drive started with a webinar for section members where they virtually met founder Hindes, now living in Oregon, who shared the Warm Winters story. After a couple weeks most chapters collected hundreds of pieces to redistribute out into their community to agencies they knew would put them to use. Union Mine members delivered a truckload of donated clothing to Marshall Hospital. Ponderosa’s efforts supported Community Hub 5 in South Lake Tahoe, Upper Room Dining Hall clients and fellow students through donations to the Student Services Department of the El Dorado Union High School District.

“As a Sacramento section officer team we knew we had a tough road ahead this year and that is why we started by choosing ‘Redefine’ as our year’s theme,” Jolly said. “And this drive was a great way to redefine a way we engage our over 5,000 members of our section to support their communities.”

Assistance League Sierra Foothills offers scholarships News release Assistance League Sierra Foothills is a local, allvolunteer nonprofit with the goal of transforming lives and strengthening the El Dorado County community through its many philanthropic programs.

The group is now accepting applications for scholarships in two categories. There are two $1,000 Advantage Scholarships and one $1,000 Community Service Scholarship offered.

The Advantage Scholarships are available to rec-

ognize those in El Dorado County who have overcome challenges and are interested in furthering their education. The applicants must pursue continuing education at a vocational/technical/business school, a community college or a four-year college or university.

The Community Service Scholarship is available to graduating high school seniors in El Dorado County who have demonstrated exemplary unpaid volunteer community service and are planning to pursue continuing their education at a four-year

The Veterinary Science competition event seeks to effectively prepare students for the expectations of animal health care and

service workplaces. This event blends a testing of skills and knowledge to be successful in the animal sciences career pathway.

through the district, many are receiving vaccines via alternate means. “It increases everyone’s safety and it’s peace of mind for all of our teachers and support staff.”

EDCOE Assistant Deputy Superintendent Kevin Monsma was checking people in and said he’s pushing to get all district educators a vaccination opportunity. “Our goal is by the end of March, we have everyone in education in El Dorado County who wants it to get it,” he shared, adding that childcare workers are next.

While this is the biggest clinic he’s coordinated so far, 400 more educators will be vaccinated through Safeway next week. Out of 3,500 staff in the county, he estimates that at least 1,600 have received a dose.

Liz Garcia Dowel of Black Oak Mine Unified School District teaches afterschool classes and was excited to bare her arm. “I’m very stoked,” she said, adding that she looks forward to seeing students soon. “I miss their little faces.”

English teacher Edward Larson and shop teacher Eric Harrelson from Golden Sierra High School admitted that they were saved by the event’s efficiency. “The dog ate my homework,”

joked Larson. “We actually forgot our paperwork so we appreciate them not turning us away.”

Although educators were the main event, Lilienthal said he was glad to be able to serve the senior cohort again, explaining that the EOC coordinated with senior centers to identify individuals struggling with the sign-up process.

“We knew there was still a need for the elderly population and we like that idea of serving that higher age group at the fire station because we have the resources to deal with any problems,” he said.

That afternoon one individual developed an allergic reaction and another fainted within minutes of each other.

Luckily, no hospital visits were required and both recovered while being monitored by paramedics.

Proud of having administered nearly 3,000 doses in the past month, EDH Fire Chief Maurice Johnson said he was glad to give up his Saturday.

“Just to see the excitement on their faces, the look of relief is amazing,” he said, adding that the fire department’s partnership with El Dorado County Public Health and EDCOE has been smooth sailing.

s we are fast approaching the end of our first quarter of 2021, I am brought back to this point one year ago, when our lives were remarkably impacted by an unexpected pandemic. I am encouraged that we are now witnessing our communities continue to persevere and thrive. We are seeing new businesses come into the area and established businesses pivot to remain successful. I like to term this level of perseverance as a “We Will!” movement.

As I have mentioned in previous messages, our Chamber is in a phase of restructuring and rebuilding.

As a 501(c)6 organization, we have not been eligible for any grants or loans ourselves; everything our Chamber does to support local business is only made possible by our membership.

We truly appreciate the members who have stood by our side and continued to support the Shingle Springs/ Cameron Park Chamber of Commerce.

As part of our rebuilding, we are excited to announce the addition of a new Administrative Assistant to our chamber offices starting in March. We are thrilled to bring on board an individual with extensive Board of Directors experience, along with years of experience in both the school district and county offices. Stay tuned for an official introduction in March!

rocks, pests and often poor soil. There are a variety of traditional ways to address those challenges in the home garden. One new method that popped up in the last decade deals with all of those challenges — straw bale gardening.

This method of growing annual vegetable plants in a medium of straw was pioneered by horticulturalist Joel Karsten. He noticed a thistle growing beautifully in an old, discarded straw bale outside a barn and the idea struck him — “Hey, this might work.”

After some thought, Karsten began his first SBG ... and a new gardening format was born. One that yields abundant produce without traditional dirt, without rocks, without weeds, with few-to-no pests and that actually conserves water and extends the growing season.

Karsten developed a 10-day method of composting intact straw bales to prepare them to nurture young plants and/or seeds. It uses simple lawn fertilizer and warm water. (Do not use a “weed-and-feed” fertilizer if you plan to plant seeds). Composting recipes are available online. I favor the recipe from his book, “Straw Bale Gardens Complete.”

The author recommends putting in some kind of watering system to avoid time spent hand watering.

One way to go is to place a soaker hose right on top of the bales. You can add a timer for convenience and water conservation.

After 10 days you can put young plants into the bales. The conditioning process gently heats the bales, giving tender plants a cozy place for young roots to grow.

To plant seeds, use a sterile potting mix on top of the bales to give the seeds some stability. They will send strong shoots down into the conditioned straw as they germinate.

Because the composting straw is warm, this means vegetables can be started earlier in your microclimate.

You can start small with one bale or go large with an entire row.

I’ve had a 12-bale SBG every year since 2015. I use Karsten’s trellis method from the book. This allows me to place row covers over plants during inclement weather. When the weather is scorching, I place gardening shade fabric over lettuces, peas and other “cool weather” crops.

Tomatoes were very successful for three years, then disappointed in productivity the next few years. After ruling out a number of causes, I decided to shift gears.

Sacramento tenor Robert Vann, also an avid gardener, suggested I try seeds from the Seed Savers Exchange online.

Last year I ordered three heirloom varieties of cherry tomato. To my delight, all three thrived. So much so that the tomato vines stood 7 feet tall above the straw bales. We had an abundant harvest for months.

I also ordered heirloom cucumber seeds from the exchange. We had so many cucumbers I ordered a juicing machine.

By December my annual SBG is finished, except for the Swiss chard, which refuses to ever give up. The old bales make an excellent soil amendment around my fruit trees during the winter. They also serve as mulch to keep water in and pests away from the trees.

product, mow at the proper height for your type of grass, and feed your grass regularly.

When your lawn is underfed and stressed out, however, it has a greater chance of being taken over by weeds.

Growing plants from seed is a great way to start gardening earlier in the season. With the right light and some simple equipment, it’s easy to grow from seed to harvest. Because each plant has unique seed-starting requirements, it helps to start small by growing just a few varieties. Some seeds — such as tomatoes and marigolds — are especially easy to start indoors. Other good choices for beginners are basil, zinnia, coleus, nasturtium and cosmos. You can start seeds in almost any type of container, as long as it’s at least 2-3” deep and has some drainage holes. Choose potting soil that’s made for growing seedlings.

Do not use soil from your garden or re-use potting soil from your houseplants. Start with a fresh, sterile mix that will ensure healthy,

disease-free seedlings. You’ll need to feed the seedlings with liquid fertilizer a few weeks after they germinate, and continue until you transplant them into the garden. Seedlings need a lot of light. If you’re growing in a window, choose a south-facing exposure. Rotate the pots regularly to keep plants from leaning into the light. You’ve been coddling these seedlings for weeks, so they need a gradual transition to the great outdoors. The process is called hardening off. About a week before you plan to set the seedlings into the garden, place them in a protected spot outdoors (partly shaded, out of the wind) for a few hours, bringing them in at night. Gradually, over the course of a week or 10 days, expose them to more and more sunshine and wind.
