Silver Fork School

Stephenie Stephens, an experienced educator with over two decades of experience, found herself at Silver Fork School four years ago. She has worked in daycare programs, summer camps, after-school programs, language immersion schools, and even a private school in China. She now can be found at the Silver Fork school, a unique two-room schoolhouse nestled in the serene El Dorado mountainside.

Silver Fork stands out for its ability to create a nurturing atmosphere where every student feels welcomed. Stephenie has witnessed numerous students who were bullied elsewhere seamlessly integrate into the school community within weeks, thanks to the supportive staff, friendly peers and the school’s charming setting.

The school’s holistic approach to education is evident in its diverse offerings. While Stephenie hopes to see the reintroduction of art and music programs, Silver Fork already boasts a thriving theater tradition, showcasing a lively Christmas play annually.

For Stephenie, Silver Fork isn’t just a workplace — it’s a sanctuary where she can channel her passion for teaching and witness the transformative power of education firsthand. Despite her worldly experiences, her heart remains firmly rooted at Silver Fork School. As she envisions a brighter future for the institution, her dedication to nurturing young minds shines through, illuminating the path forward for generations to come.

SPOTLIGHT Business

Life Care Home Medical Supply

Those in need of medical supplies are also in need of education, compassion and understanding. For all three — and much more — head to Life Care Home Medical Supply where owner Nancy Rothman is ready to help.

“I’m not just selling a product,” said Rothman. “I’m helping you find a solution to fit your needs.”

Rothman is as warm and attentive as her motto suggests. Her business — which earned the El Dorado Hills Chamber of Commerce Small Business of the Year award in 2022 — is a testament to the consideration and care she gives to everyone who ventures through her doors. With so much more than medical supplies to offer, Rothman insists on hearing clients’ stories to discover other issues she may be able to alleviate.

“People don’t just come into a medical supply store to shop, they come here for a reason,” she explained. “I want

to steer them in the right direction to the right product. I don’t want to oversell them. I want to make sure that with all of my knowledge, I’m giving them what they need.”

Rothman brings nearly 20 years of experience in medical supplies and pharmaceuticals to help customers select equipment, whether it be knee scooters, wheelchairs, transport chairs, lift chairs, daily aid products or just a shoehorn. Some equipment is available for rent and donations are given to a local nonprofit. She also offers treatment advice for wound care and keeps a vetted referral list of caregivers and equipment installers.

“It’s really going on a journey with people,” noted Rothman, herself an El Dorado Hills resident. “They’re scared; they’re taking care of a loved one. I treat everyone like they are my own family. That’s just who I am. I just love doing this.”

Get Creative with Easter Sweets

Holiday hams and deviled eggs may take center stage at Easter gatherings, but edible crafts offer a reminder of the magic of the season that’s found in moments spent together. Simple recipes that call for a dose of creativity are perfect ways to bring the kids to the kitchen, made even easier when all that work leads to sweet treats.

While plastic eggs may have led to a decline in good, old-fashioned egg-dyeing, there are still fun ways to bring crafts back to Easter celebrations. Consider these Kids Krafty Easter Cake Pops, which call for little ones to help dip seasonal shapes in chocolate, use cake molds and more.

Children of virtually any age can relish in the joys of using cookie cutters and decorating Easter Sugar Cookies, all with a

little supervision and short list of instructions. This version shows how to make the cookies and homemade icing so you can create any color you desire for maximum creativity.

Remember, these delicious crafts don’t have to be perfect – having fun and making memories that last a lifetime are what make Easter truly special.

Kid-friendly crafts that bring loved ones together

Kids Krafty Easter Cake Pops

Recipe courtesy of “Cookin’ Savvy”

1 box cake mix

1 can frosting

1 bunny chocolate mold

1 cakesicle mold ice pop sticks

1 bag white chocolate chips or melting chips cake pop sticks

1 bag orange melting chips

2 tablespoons canola or coconut oil, divided

1 bag green melting chips pastel sprinkles

1 piece hard foam (optional)

edible markers

Bake cake according to package instructions and let cool completely.

Crumble cake and mix with 1/2 can frosting until dough forms. Add more frosting, if needed. Using small cookie scoop, form dough into balls and set aside. Place dough in bunny molds then pop out and set aside with balls. Place dough in cakesicle mold, insert ice pop stick in each slot and freeze 5-10 minutes.

Melt handful of white melting chips. Stick tip of each cake pop stick in chocolate then insert into every cake ball and bunny until each has one stick. Set aside to dry.

Remove cakesicles from freezer and pop out of molds. In bowl, melt orange melts then mix in 1 tablespoon oil and transfer to cup. Dip cakesicles and scrape off excess using rim of cup. Place on parchment paper to dry.

In bowl, melt green melts then place in zip-top or piping bag. Cut tip off bag, pipe carrot leaves onto piece of parchment paper and let dry.

Melt remaining white melts and mix in remaining oil. Transfer to cup and dip ball-shaped cake pops and bunnies then tap stick on edge of cup to remove excess.

Over separate bowl, sprinkle ball-shaped pops with pastel sprinkles. To keep ball shape, let dry by sticking in piece of hard foam. Bunnies can dry face side up on parchment paper. After bunnies are dry, use edible markers to make face and color in ears.

When carrots and leaves are dry, remelt orange melts and place in piping or zip-top bag. Cut off tip and drizzle orange over carrots. Add small line of orange on each ice pop stick and place leaves on each stick. Let dry.

Easter Sugar Cookies

Recipe courtesy of “Cookin’ Savvy”

Icing:

1/3 cup meringue powder

1/2 cup warm water, plus additional for thinning (optional), divided

3 tablespoons vanilla

1 bag (2 pounds) powdered sugar

2 tablespoons corn syrup assorted food coloring

Cookies:

2 sticks unsalted butter, at room temperature

1 cup sugar

1 egg

1 tablespoon vanilla

2 teaspoons baking powder

1 dash salt

3 cups all-purpose flour

To make icing: Mix meringue powder, 1/2 cup warm water, vanilla, powdered sugar and corn syrup. Separate into bowls and add food coloring; mix with water, as needed, to thin for piping.

To make cookies: Heat oven to 350 F.

Cream butter and sugar. Mix in egg, vanilla, baking powder and salt. Mix in flour 1 cup at a time to form dough. Roll dough out to 1/4-1/2-inch thickness.

Cut into shapes, place on baking sheet and freeze 10 minutes. Bake 8-12 minutes. Cool completely before icing.

Place icing in zip-top or piping bags and cut off tips. Put cookies on parchment paper. Trace outline first then fill in middle. Use toothpicks to smooth out.

Let dry 6 hours and finish decorating with different icing colors or edible markers.

NEUROPATHY IS A PROGRESSIVE CONDITION! DRUG FREE TREATMENT AVAILABLE. ACT NOW

We are one of 280 clinics nationwide that specialize in the treatment of neuropathy

What Causes It?

Peripheral neuropathy is a result of damage to the nerves often causing weakness, pain, numbness, tingling, and may also lead to serious balance problems.

This damage is commonly caused by a lack of blood ow to the nerves in the hands and feet. If not properly treated this lack of blood ow may cause the nerves to degenerate.

Healthy Nerve

Healthy Blood Vessels

Diseased Blood Vessels

Nerves Shrivel when Blood Vessels Weak and Disappear

As you can see in Figure 1, as the blood vessels surrounding the nerves become diseased they shrink and shrivel. This process hastens the ow of vital nutrients to the nerves required to remain healthy. When these nerves begin to “die” it could lead to balance problems, pain, numbness, tingling and burning symptoms in the hands and feet.

In order to effectively treat your neuropathy 3 factors must be determined.

1

What is the underlying cause?

How much nerve damage has been sustained? 2

Drug Free Treatment Method

How much treatment will your condition require? 3

Our advanced treatment method has 3 main goals

Placerville, CA – Currently the most common method most doctor’s recommend to treat neuropathy is with the use of prescription drugs. Although these drugs may temporarily reduce your symptoms they may cause a feeling of discomfort and in some cases lead to a variety of terrible unwanted side effects. We have a different method!

The treatment to increase blood ow utilizes a specialized low-level light therapy (not to be confused with laser therapy) using light emitting diode technology. This technology was originally developed by NASA to assist in increasing blow ow.

The low level light therapy is like watering a tree. The light therapy will allow the blood vessels to grow back around the peripheral nerves and provide them with the proper nutrients to heal and repair. It’s like adding water to a tree and seeing the roots grow deeper and deeper. The amount of treatment needed to allow the nerves to fully recover varies from person to person and can only be determined after a detailed neurological and vascular evaluation. “My feet hurt so bad after sitting I could barely take the rst few steps. I have had 11 treatments and no longer feel sharp or shooting pains and most of the tingling is gone. I now have full balance and can walk without pain. As Dr. Mooney explained the treatment is not painful, nothing uncomfortable, and is actually very relaxing.” – Neuropathy Pain Patient

John Mooney, DC at Premier Healthcare will do a neuropathy severity examination to determine the extent of the nerve damage for only $47.

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO LIVE WITH THE PAIN! CALL TODAY!

Outdoors Q&A

Delta smelt experiment

Q: What’s the latest on CDFW’s experiment with the Delta smelt population?

A: CDFW continues to work alongside several partner agencies to learn more about the decline of Delta smelt and what might be possible to aid in the survival of the endangered species.

The Delta Smelt Experimental Release Study involves releasing 90,000 laboratory-raised fish into the Delta this season to determine which methods prove the most effective at production, tagging, transport and release of the fish into the wild. Learning which plan works best could someday help to supplement the population with a goal of aiding in the recovery of the species.

While being raised in captivity, each fish is marked by hand with an adipose fin clip or a fluorescent tag. A particular color indicates to scientists the date, location and experimental method of the release.

Recently 32 metal 20-gallon containers were filled with 200 Delta smelt and emptied directly into the Sacramento River into a specially designed submerged cage. The cage provided a safe environment while the fish adjusted to the river temperature and their new surroundings before they were fully released a few hours

later into the river. Through Delta smelt monitoring surveys that are conducted routinely each year, CDFW can learn about their health and survivability.

“Last year was the first time we were able to uniquely mark fish from different experimental release events and get decent numbers of adult fish recaptured in our monitoring surveys,” said CDFW Environmental Program Manager Dr. James Hobbs. “We’re releasing adult fish just before the spawning season and we’re hoping these fish will meet up and produce the next generations.”

Unfortunately, the same factors responsible for the near disappearance of the fish are still present including a less than reliable flow of freshwater, low food productivity, loss of wetland habitats, predation by non-native species and other reasons. But scientists say the experiment is showing some positive results with survival and recovery of released adults.

Apprentice hunts

Q: What program does CDFW have that offers hunting instruction for beginners or young people?

A: CDFW has apprentice and special hunts that are

designed to involve groups not traditionally experienced with hunting

opportunities. The hunts are intended for first time or novice-level hunters, with a strong emphasis on hunter education principles and ethics while developing hunting and shooting skills.

Pen-raised pheasants allow for these hunts to happen in locations featuring easy walking, safe shooting and adequate open space for participants to spread out. These birds present a larger and slower moving target than wild birds, allowing more time to follow direction from their CDFW escort and practice safe shooting skills.

CDFW currently holds about 65 apprentice hunts each year. Junior hunts, women’s hunts, family hunts and mobility impaired hunts all fall under the description of apprentice hunts.

Apprentice hunters must possess a valid California hunting license and upland game bird stamp or validation and participants are selected through a random drawing process.

Further information on apprentice and special hunts is available on wildlife.ca.gov/Hunting.
