The El Dorado Hills Tasmanian Devils Swim team has named EDH native Branden Mills as the new coach. “Returning to Taz as a coach is going back to my roots and I’m really appreciative to have the opportunity,” Mills told Village Life. “Moving back to El Branden Mills Dorado Hills was the best thing I could have done. I really appreciate my family and where I came from.” Mills attended Oak Ridge High School, swimming for the Trojans all four years, then headed to Arizona State University where he swam under Michael Phelps’ coach, Bob Bowman, and received the Arthur Ashe Jr. Diversity and Inclusion Award. He graduated in 2017 with a bachelor’s degree in human communication and later received a master’s degree in sports law and business through the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at ASU.

As COVID-19 cases across the state drop, Gov. Gavin Newsom was on Feb. 14 expected to revise the mask mandate for schools but instead, California Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mark

Ghaly announced there would be a two-week delay in a decision and rules for schools would be reassessed Feb. 28. Dozens of Oak Ridge High School students protested that announcement in front of campus Feb. 15. According to a post to the Facebook group EDH Republicans, students showed up to school without masks as part of an organized protest that day. Oak Ridge administrators said they moved the protestors into separate classrooms to continue their schoolwork but the students left to demonstrate outside. The Rotary Club of El Dorado Hills and Oak Meadow Elementary School recently celebrated Chase Anna Crisafulli as Student of the Year. “She always has a smile,” said fifth-grade teacher Cindi Prahl, adding that Chase Anna brings enthusiasm and fun to her classroom. Generations at Green Valley retooled Sel Richard Staff writer The development formerly known as Dixon Ranch is back on the table with the application freshly submitted to the county last month. Located on the south side of Green Valley Road southeast of the Malcolm Dixon Road intersection, the downsized version, called Generations at Green Valley, has 379 single-family residential lots instead of the original 605 units. A clubhouse and community park are also slated, as well as some open space. Although the 280-acre project was initially approved by the El Dorado County Planning Commission, it was subsequently denied by the Board of Supervisors in 2017. “The primary reason was that there was some concern on what was identified as fiscal neutrality,” said Aidan Barry, representative of Green Valley Road Benefits and Executive Vice President of True Life Companies Management. “The auditor identified that the project would have a negative impact to the county from an economic standpoint. Although we didn’t believe that was true, it seems to be the basis of the denial.” In the interim, Barry reports that board and neighborhood feedback was used to rework the project. “What we’ve been doing since then is retooling, what’s the right approach, how do we deal with some of the neighborhood issues, how do we frame a project that would allow for substantial community benefits,” explained Barry, admitting that some traffic concerns persist. “We have submitted a revised application that we believe satisfies many concerns of what was raised in the past.” To address a major pushback from adjacent homeowners regard-

In addition, the project includes 148 10,000-square-foot market rate lots and 214 6,500-square-foot age-restricted lots. “We believe that because we’ve reduced density, a lot of those impacts are reduced and therefore the mitigation will be reduced,” assured Barry. The project still requires an El Dorado County General Plan amendment. Portions of the prop-

erty necessitate a change from low-density residential to a highdensity residential designation. A public facilities designation is needed for the 4-acre public park that Green Valley Road Benefits plans to dedicate to the El Dorado Hills Community Services District. “We’re excited about beginning the process again,” Barry told Village Life. “We know that the community will be very involved and we anticipate a fairly significant community outreach program.” Residents could be notified as early as later this year and Barry said he hopes to break ground by spring of 2024.

Auditor releases sales tax report News release

Auditor-Controller Joe Harn recently posted the El Dorado County Sales Tax update for the quarter ending September 2021 to the county’s website. The report indicates that the countywide sales tax revenues increased by a meager 0.2% compared to the same period in 2020. This minimal overall increase in revenue is in sharp contrast compared to the 16.6% increase in the Sacramento region. “The county’s sales tax revenues were flat in the third quarter and our revenues lag way behind other jurisdictions in the Sacramento region because one of the world’s biggest online retailers has changed the way it apportions sales tax,” Harn said. “Online transactions are no longer being reported in the community where the goods are actually delivered, but instead the sales tax is being paid to the municipality where the shipping warehouse is located.” Although this significant change in sales tax apportionment will have a minimal impact in the county’s current year financial position, assuming online sales continue to grow, the long haul impacts will have a powerful adverse impact on our county’s ability to provide services to our residents, the auditor continued.
