THE DAVIS ENTERPRISE

Horse has left the barn Dear Readers: A number of you wrote in concerned about the woman who is Living With Scrooge, the husband who has plenty of money but keeps his wife on a tight budget and makes her life miserable. I suggested marriage counseling, which many readers agreed with, but an equal number feel that the horse has left the barn and I should have advised her to run for the hills. I would agree if there were an issue of physical safety, but that was not the case. Still, I find alternative opinions to be interesting and wanted to share some with you. Dear Annie: Pease get back to this lady. By the tone of her letter and what was left unsaid, I’m sure she is being emotionally, and even perhaps physically, abused. I would definitely suggest that this lady leave Scrooge as soon as possible. She is suffering, and God knows what her insides (heart, liver and brain) must be like, slowly dying as well. My sister died at 65 because she didn’t leave such a horrible man. Please, suggest that she leave now. If she stays, it will only get worse. I have no accreditation in this field, but I know a bad situation when I read about it. Thanks, Annie. — You Do So Much Good Dear Annie: I agree with your comment that dwelling on her daughter-in-law is a waste of time and energy. However, I believe that Living With Scrooge should seek the advice of an attorney rather than a marriage counselor at this point. The reader said nothing about having any affection for her husband and admitted that she made a huge mistake by marrying him. She needs to find out what the property division laws are in her state, and what assets her husband actually has, rather than depending on hearsay and snooping. — Reader in New Mexico Dear Annie: This lady does not need a marriage counselor. She needs a very strong divorce lawyer! Both must work together to find where his assets are located, i.e., bank accounts, investments and the like. I am not familiar with the laws in Las Vegas and what she would be entitled to receive, but she is legally married to him and should be entitled to something. A petition for divorce should be filed as well as a document freezing all his assets. This is a marriage that is not worth saving under the circumstances described by her. It is toxic; she is treated poorly by her husband and the family, and she is

Legals@DavisEnterprise.net dying inside. What is there to save? It is time for her to move forward. I send my prayers to her and wish her the very best. — That Marriage Is Over Dear Readers: Thank you for your insights and suggestions. You make good points, though I am hopeful the marriage can be salvaged through marriage counseling if he goes with her. Remember, the woman who wrote in had her own job, bought her own house and was able to support herself before allowing Scrooge to change her life. If he refuses to go, then I agree that finding a good attorney to protect her would be the next logical step.

Lucky number seven Dear Annie: I am recently engaged and very excited to plan my wedding with my fiance. I am also excited to have my best friends stand by my side on my special day. However, there has been a lot of stress when trying to determine who should be standing by me. For my fiance, he already has his seven groomsmen picked out, and he doesn’t want to add any more, to avoid having too many people on the altar. For me, I originally narrowed my bridal party to seven, which includes my best friends from each stage of life (elementary school, middle school, high school, college and medical school) in addition to my two sisters. Two of my high school friends have recently asked me and the rest of my high school group (of four) to be in their bridal parties. We are the only ones in their parties. Since they asked me to be in their parties, I feel an obligation to include them in mine, but I don’t have enough room to fit them in my party.

EMPLOYMENT

My fiance and I agreed to have seven in each of our parties — no more and no less. In addition, one of the girls in my high school friend group is currently in my bridal party since I am closest to her, but I don’t have room for the other two. I don’t want to cause drama or hard feelings, but I also am happy with my current bridal party selection. What should I do? — Something Blue Dear Something Blue: If you are happy with your current bridal party and you and your fiance already agreed to the number, then by all means keep it that way. While I applaud your consideration for your friends and your politeness in wanting to reciprocate by making them bridesmaids, you have to do what is best for you and your fiance. However, just because you don’t make your two friends bridesmaids doesn’t mean you can’t make them feel special at your wedding. Maybe they could participate in the wedding as a reader. The most important thing is to communicate to them exactly what you communicated in your letter. Once they know how much you want them at your wedding, but you have two sisters and your best friends from each stage of life in the party, they will understand. Congratulations on your upcoming nuptials. ——— Dear Annie: The letter from “What Did You Say” about background music on TV shows being too loud is so true! My husband and I have lost count of how many shows or movies we don’t finish because the music drowns out the dialogue. I even thought of writing to the producers of the shows directly to see what their response would be and if it would help at all. The investigative shows, such as 20/20 and 48 Hours, are among the worst offenders. No matter how interesting the previews sound, we don’t even bother trying to watch them anymore. Unfortunately, my TV is not a 2020 model and does not have a “clear voice” audio setting, but I will definitely look for that option when it comes time to replace our

Boyfriend delays marriage Dear Annie: I have been dating this man for a little over four years, and I feel like he will never fully truly commit to me. There’s a six-year age gap; I’m 28, and he is 34. I’ve always known in life that I wanted to get married and start a family; hence why I dated an older man. My thoughts were that he would be more on track to those goals rather than someone who was closer to my age (more so around the time we met). With that being said, I feel like marriage will never happen. Any time we talk about marriage it’s a rushed conversation and it just seems like excuse after excuse as to why we haven’t taken any more steps in that direction. (We already live together.) First he said that I was too young, then he said he’s looking at rings and he needs to do his research on them, then COVID-19 hit, so it hasn’t felt like the right time. He’s a great guy and all and we have fun together, but I just feel like he will never pop the question and I’m losing my patience. We got into a fight about our relationship this past June (but these arguments aren’t new, we’ve had a few before the most recent one), and I almost walked away for good. But, he assured me it was coming and said, “It was my plan to have a ring on your finger by the end of the year.” It’s officially 2021 and there is still no ring. Am I wasting my time? Is he just leading me on? Am I being crazy for feeling this way? I just don’t understand why he won’t commit to me if he claims to want the same things in life. — Crunched for Commitment Dear Crunched for Commitment: No, you’re not crazy, but keep up this waiting game much longer and you will be. I suggest popping the question yourself. No

matter how he answers, you’ll be better off than you are now. (And if he says anything like “maybe,” take it as a no.) ——— Dear Annie: “Don’t Shoot the Mockingbird’s” dilemma about absorbing accents struck a chord with me. I’ve mirrored accents unintentionally my whole life (I’m 68 now), and I just can’t seem to stop. If I watch a British TV program for an hour, then I gain the accent and it may not go away for a few more hours. If I travel and spend a couple of days immersed in another accent, then it sometimes stays with me for weeks! I’ve noticed I actually think with the accent with my mind’s voice. The problem seems to annoy me more than it does the people I’m mimicking, as I’ve never had anyone say, “Are you mocking me?” I think most people realize I’m absorbing their accent, not making fun of it or them. I think “Mockingbird” and others with the same “affliction” should simply ignore it and be themselves, and the people to whom they’re speaking will realize it’s not being done in jest. At least, that’s how it’s worked out for me. — Voice of the People (All of Them) in Ohio Dear Voice of the People: Thanks for speaking as the voice of wisdom, in addition to the rest. May your letter bring comfort to any other accidental mockingbirds. ——— Dear Annie: Not long ago you printed a letter from “Nearing the End.” They were reflecting on lost loved ones and bothered by the fact that it seemed like a lifetime of memories just disappeared when someone died. Most lives leave ripples in the pond of life. The writer might try looking for those positive ripples of grandchildren, a circle of friends, a church, old co-workers, neighbors or anywhere else. — Mike L. Dear Mike: I love this comment, and I’m reminded of the film “It’s a Wonderful Life” and this quote from Clarence: “Strange, isn’t it? Each man’s life touches so many other lives. And when he isn’t around, he leaves an awful hole, doesn’t he?”
