School districts defy state mask mandate Thomas Frey Staff writer The El Dorado Union High School District announced a significant change in mask enforcement Tuesday by asking students to mask up and leaving it at that. “The enforcement of masking will be done by educating students and asking them to mask but no further actions of exclusion from class will be taken,” state district officials in a letter to parents. As COVID-19 cases across the state drop, Gov. Gavin Newsom was on Monday expected to revise the mask mandate for schools but instead,

California Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly announced there would be a two-week delay in a decision and rules for schools would be reassessed Feb. 28. Dozens of Oak Ridge High School students protested that announcement in front of campus Tuesday. According to a post to the Facebook group EDH Republicans, students showed up to school without masks as part of an organized protest that day. Oak Ridge administrators said they moved the protestors into separate classrooms to continue their schoolwork but the

Missouri Flat PG&E lines going underground Thomas Frey Staff writer PG&E has begun to convert overhead power lines to underground along Missouri Flat Road in the Placerville/ Diamond Springs area. The project is expected to be completed in July. Missouri Flat Road between China Garden Road and Pleasant Valley Road will have an all-new underground electric system put in by PG&E crews and contractors. The work is being done

at the request of the county through PG&E’s Rule 20A program, which provides cities and counties a process to work with PG&E to convert utilities from overhead to underground in designated districts. It’s a beautification process that will also prevent fires, according to PG&E spokesperson Megan McFarland. This is the only Rule 20A project in El Dorado County right now.

Barbara’s life spanned more than nine decades. Her 96 years were filled with many accomplishments which always included love, service and perseverance. These attributes played a role in forming the two achievements for which Barbara will be best remembered: her children and Hooverville Orchards & Bakeshop. Barbara’s legacy included raising 13 children to value the importance of family, to watch out and care for each other through the good times and the not-so-good times. Barbara was our role model teaching that hard work was fulfilling and worth the effort. Her sweat-equity approach to life resulted in the expansion of Hooverville Orchards to include building the Bakeshop. The Bakeshop was the realization of Barbara’s dream to sell her homemade pies using the pie dough recipe handed down to her through her family. Barbara’s pies won several awards at county fairs. Barbara was very happy when satisfied customers ate the fruits of her labors — a scrumptious pastry enjoyed to the last crumb. The Bakeshop would not be what it is today if not for Barbara’s love and perseverance. Barbara did have a very busy life, but after she raised her children, she took time to complete crossword puzzles; watch her favorite football team’s games and play her favorite games; bingo, Yahtzee and Zilch with family. She also took great pleasure in going outside to see what flowers and trees were blooming and to watch the many hummingbirds and the occasional orioles that came to feed at the flowers and feeders she put out for them. Barbara was a very active member of Saint Patrick Church. She served as church secretary and was a long-time member of Saint Patrick’s Ladies Society. Barbara also provided support to Saint Patrick’s Upper Room Dining Hall. Barbara was predeceased by her sons Patrick Hoover and Robbie Hoover. She is survived by children Pamela Hoover (Bill Paul), Michael (Cheryl) Hoover, Cindy Hoover, Connie (Bruce) Smith, Chris (Cam) Hoover, Rachel (Del) Detwiler, Dorothy Hoover, George Hoover, Susan (Randy) Veerkamp, Barbara Montes and John Hoover; 27 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren. Those wishing to celebrate Barbara’s life are invited to attend her memorial at Hooverville Orchards, 1101 Wallace Road, Placerville, Monday, March 7 from 1-3 p.m.

“I am a proud mother of six children, 13 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren” were the last written words of the avid writer and caring matriarch of her family. Haroldene “Dena” Freeman passed away Jan. 15, surrounded by her family. Dena was born in 1936 to Harold and Irene Henry. Her early years were spent growing up on a chicken farm in Arizona. At 8 years old she moved out to San Francisco to live with her father, a guard at the now infamous Alcatraz prison. She grew up on the island in the apartments built to house the guards’ families. In her memoir, “Alcatraz, My Home Town”, Dena recounts the fun, exciting and sometimes dangerous times she spent growing up on “The Rock.” This experience shaped her into becoming a strong, hilariously inappropriate and intelligent young woman. Dena graduated from Galileo High School in San Francisco and continued to pursue academics. First, at the Sacramento School of Nursing. During this time she met and married William (Bill) Freeman in 1956. In 1970, Dena and Bill moved to Ellensberg, Wash., home of Central Washington State College, where she received her bachelor’s degree. She would then go on to attend the California School of Professional Psychology. She worked as a nurse for over 50 years. Dena and Bill returned to the Sacramento area in 1974 and settled in Carmichael. In 2005, Dena and Bill moved from Carmichael to Diamond Springs to live in their last home. In 2009, Dena and Bill helped found the “Tea Party in the Hills,” a conservative group with the sole mission of educating voters about the U.S. Constitution, reducing taxes and getting elected officials to be more responsive to the voter. She was featured frequently in the Mountain Democrat’s opinion section, and could be heard on a few conservative talk radio programs. Dena had the wit of a scholar, the humor of a sailor and the compassion of a life-long nurse. She imparted all of these traits onto her children: Todd Freeman, Lynn Anderson (Tom), Teri Freeman, Tedd Freeman, Tracy Swanson, Timm Freeman and Ande Starr. Dena was an active and caring woman who spent most of her life thinking about others. She loved a good cup of coffee, reading her books, writing, playing Scrabble, solving Sudoku puzzles and looked forward to going to the movies every Saturday night. She always surrounded herself with family, which is where she felt most loved. A celebration of life service will be held at Green Valley Community Church May 19 at 1 p.m.

John “Jay” Carpenter Tibbals, 78, passed away Jan. 21 peacefully in his home surrounded by family, friends and faith. Jay was born in Middletown, Conn., Sept. 18, 1943. During his childhood he experienced living in both the east and west coast. Jay was proud of his military service from 196366 where his tour of duty included Korean and Vietnam. After his time in the service Jay worked at the University of California, Los Angeles in the theater arts department as production coordinator. Jay moved to El Dorado County in 1978 and began working as the A/V computer technician at the El Dorado County Office of Education until he retired in 2010. In addition to his work at EDCOE, in 1985 he began working as the videographer for the board of supervisors retiring after 35 years of public service. His colleagues described him as, “A steady dependable co-worker and friend who took pride in his work and who was always ready to give them a helping hand.” In 1986 he met his future wife Kathy at the El Dorado County Kids Expo and they were blessed with 32 years of marriage. After surviving cancer in 1999 Jay fulfilled his lifetime dream and obtained his pilot’s license and enjoyed many years of flying with friends and family to cities throughout California. Jay had many interests and hobbies including cooking, stained glass work, woodwork, kayaking, playing cards, ranching, volunteering at his church, motorcycling, road trips in his classic sports car and enjoying racing RC cars with his grandson Blake. Jay will be deeply missed by many as he touched our lives in so many positive and meaningful ways. In his honor, a celebration of life ceremony will take place at Unity of Sacramento March 12 at noon. He will be laid to rest at Sacramento Valley Veteran National Cemetery in Dixon with military honors.

ESSENTIALS OBITUARIES Stephen Alfred Tapson

Andrew Jackson 1829 — 1837

Stephen Alfred Tapson, died peacefully Feb. 11, after a lengthy illness, with his beloved wife of 57 years, Judy, by his side. Steve was the loving husband of Judith (Murphy) Tapson; beloved father of Rebecca (Paul) Silliman and Suzanne (Gordon Burnes) Tapson; adored “Pops” of Logan, Erin and Cayman Silliman and Henry, Eli and Oscar Burnes; loving brother of Maria (Edward) McDevitt and brother-in-law of Patricia (Joseph) Weld (deceased) and Joseph (Victoria) Murphy. Steve was born in San Francisco on April 25, 1943, to Alfred J. Tapson and Margaret “Peggy” Tapson (nee McMullen). He was a graduate of St. Ignatius College Preparatory High School, class of 1960, and then went on to the University of California, Berkeley, for his undergraduate studies. While at Berkeley, Steve joined ROTC, studied history, played collegiate tennis and most importantly, met his life partner, Judy. After college, Steve entered the service and volunteered to go to Vietnam, where he was an Army combat veteran and intelligence officer. Steve was awarded the Vietnam Campaign Medal by the South Vietnamese government and the Bronze Star Medal by the U.S. government. Steve came home from Vietnam to rejoin Judy, their two-year-old daughter, Becky and 11-month-old, Suzie, who was born while he was overseas. Steve worked for the military for two additional years after his tour in Vietnam teaching spy craft in San Francisco. He went directly from his army discharge ceremony to see the registrar at Hastings Law School, still dressed in his military blues, and was accepted on the spot. Judy worked to support his studies and when he graduated, his first job was

teaching aspiring lawyers to pass the notoriously difficult California Bar exam. Lore has it that Steve and Judy moved to Placerville because Steve grew tired of looking for parking spaces in San Francisco. He applied to be the Assistant Public Defender of El Dorado County and was hired and mentored by Mike Tarlton. Steve went on to have a storied legal career which included many high-profile cases both as a public defender and in his private practice. He believed deeply in the 6th Amendment and the fundamental right all citizens have to effective legal counsel. Steve was known throughout the community for his ribald sense of humor, including some humorous courtroom antics. He famously came to court once with a wheelbarrow full of horse manure to exemplify that the prosecution’s case was full of, well, you know. He was a skilled and respected advocate for his clients and beloved by many in the courthouse. Steve loved being the father of daughters. He taught Becky and Suzie to read the newspaper with a critical eye; to shoot an intruder if necessary and then immediately shoot the floor so that one could argue a warning shot had been fired; to tell the truth almost all the time and to be open-minded and accepting of people because one had not walked in their shoes. Except for the warning-shot lesson, these are all things Becky and Suzie and their spouses, have worked to instill in their own children; Steve’s six grandchildren. Steve was loved by his wife unreservedly. Steve accepted the menagerie of pigs, sheep, horses and random strays that was her passion and she delighted in his wry wit, his kindness and the love he had for his profession. A memorial gathering is planned for 11 a.m. on April 23 at the Tapson home. He is missed. In lieu of flowers and if so inclined, please consider a donation in Steve’s name to the ACLU (aclu.org) or to the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (nacdl.org).

Forest Service wildfire crisis EDITOR: see the U.S. Forest Service wanting to promote the same BS about thinning as a strategy on wildfires. Everybody is familiar with the screwups of the Forest Service these days, Caldor being one of them, but what people need to realize is that thinning, while important, is trivial compared to the resumption of pre-treehugger days proper timber sales and harvests. And the mills that were shut down like the one that was in Camino need to be rebuilt. Forest thinning has a place just like trimming the borders of your lawn has a place, but it doesn’t replace mowing the grass and thinning doesn’t replace proper forest management. Beware what hides in the shadows EDITOR: he time has come to change the pay scale for new elected county officials. Rumor has it that two of the highest, most ridiculous salary earners will be retiring this fall to ride off into the sunset with their $386,000-plus retirement and benefits packages. To put this in perspective, the president of the United States is paid $400,000 a year. President Trump donated his salary to different charities. California’s governor makes $190,000 a year. Yet in this county, we have people making over $200,000 a year — salary, benefits and pension debt to CalPERS. (Source: California Transparent.com). When a new person is elected to an office, just like in private business, there should be a probationary period with a lower salary for a specified time until the probationary period is complete. Better yet just lower the salary down to a respectable level. This, in turn, lowers the county’s commitment to CalPERS. Public positions like the sheriff and district attorney do not perform enough work worth this kind of salary, in my opinion. The sheriff ’s salary was manipulated in Section 504 of El Dorado County Charter: “... The Board of Supervisors shall, at least annually determine the existing average salaries for the South Lake Tahoe Police Department, Amador County Sheriff ’s Department and the California Highway Patrol for

Effective on the first day of January of each year after this charter provision first becomes effective, the Board of Supervisors shall adjust and determine that the average salary for each class of position as set forth herein be at least equal to the average of the salaries for the comparable positions in the South Lake Tahoe Police Department, Amador County Sheriff ’s Department and the California Highway Patrol.” As used herein, the term “comparable class of position” shall mean a group of positions substantially similar with respect to qualifications or duties or responsibilities. Salaries for positions as chosen in 2020: • South Lake Tahoe chief of police — $299,251.62 • Amador County sheriff — $235,414.22 • Asst. chief California Highway Patrol — $729,189.26 This averages to $421,285.03. The El Dorado County sheriff earned $386,476.37. This is how the salary can be rigged to raise wages. They throw in an outlier like the CHP position instead of a comparable sheriff ’s salary like maybe: • Sheriff of Placer County $593,486.93 • Sheriff of Calaveras County $238,685.40 • Sheriff of Alpine County $218,818.36 Using Alpine County, Amador County and the city of South Lake Tahoe would give an average of $251,161.40. The difference would be $170,123.63. That is a big cost savings to the taxpayer and decreases our CalPERS debt. The time is upon us to take charge of our public officials’ salaries and benefit packages. We can no longer afford a yearly total cost of $201,961,438 for public employees. ou can’t hardly turn around these days without bumping into one or more examples of legitimate political discourse. The Russians are doing it big time over there in Eastern Europe where they have almost completely embraced their smaller neighbor, Ukraine. Nearly 150,000 experienced and well-equipped troopers representing a number of “youth outdoor” CHRIS organizations, with a gazillion aerial assets and special devices (like toy drones but a lot bigger) that could “affect” communications related to “command and control” of certain Ukrainian infrastructure capabilities, populate the area, according to current reports from the region. Kim Jong Un continues his years-long campaign of LPD with several recent exhibitions showing the increasingly greater power, range and effectiveness of North Korea’s robust fireworks industry. The Dear Strongman was heard to gleefully mutter “Don’t Look Up!” referencing the “blockbuster” film now playing in theaters everywhere. Down in Mississippi another father and son team of white guys allegedly loosed a volley of LPD at a young, Black FedEx driver. Pete and Flora, regular folks from San Diego, wore their COVID-19 face masks throughout all four quarters and half-time Sunday except when eating and drinking. Other maskers included Mel and Dot along with their best fan friends Chuck and Lana, Bob and Bobbie — all from Cincinnati. LA denizens Pablo and Paco wore matching Ram flag masks while Skip and Louise from Denver mysteriously sported oversized Broncos clear face shields. Props to all for their comprehensive and

Following a crash on Highway 50 Tuesday afternoon, the driver of this Honda CR-V was life-flighted with major injuries and arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.

DUI suspected in Highway 50 crash Mountain Democrat staff Navarina Wakefield, 36, was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol after the SUV she was driving hit a tree along Highway 50 in Pollock Pines, according to the Placerville office of the California Highway Patrol. The Pollock Pines woman, who suffered major injuries and was life-flighted to Sutter Roseville Medical Center, was the sole

occupant of the 2021 Honda CR-V, which was the only vehicle involved in the incident. CHP officials said Wakefield’s injuries, although severe, were not life-threatening. The crash was reported at about 2:14 p.m. Firefighters arrived on scene to find Wakefield pinned in the driver’s seat, requiring extrication. But before she was sent for hospital treatment, Wakefield was arrested on suspicion of DUI,

CHP officials said. In a post to social media, CHP investigators shared a photo of an empty bottle of vodka found among the gnarled wreckage of Wakefield’s SUV. According to the CHP collision report, Wakefield’s Honda hit a tree along eastbound Highway 50 just west of Sly Park Road before coming to a rest on the highway’s shoulder. The CHP continues to investigate the incident.

Some protestors took it as far as to demonstrate in front of Principal Kevin Cadden’s El Dorado Hills home. Students not wearing masks will no longer be removed from “any school facility or event,” according to a statement posted to the BUSD website Thursday morning. Staff will continue to wear masks in the presence of students indoors and students will be encouraged to wear masks at the beginning of each school day. District officials cited the decrease in COVID-19 cases and a community that “widely” supports student choice on masking as reasons for the mask policy revision. District staff has

also been directed to maintain enhanced air circulation and filtration in classrooms. Buckeye administrators state that schools in the district “will foster an environment in which mask choice is respected” and the adjustment in masking policy is intended to ensure “educators, students and families can be most focused on the education of our children.” For the Black Oak Mine Unified School District in north county a special Board of Trustees meeting is planned for 4 p.m. Friday at the district office to discuss the issue of masks. BOMUSD Superintendent Jeremy Meyers in a letter to parents shared his disappointment in the decision to extend the school mask mandate but assured that trustees would review relevant facts and hear from parents.

All appeared to have a glass or canned beverage in hand in each photo which may explain the logic of their LPD — or not. One celebrity wag called attention to the celebrities’ LPD and then to California’s school kids who would all be wearing required masks in class this week honoring the statewide LPD. Prospective voters in Texas are enjoying an especially contagious variety of legislative LPD reflected in cockamamie new rules about applying for an absentee ballot wherein nothing matches as it should. A fun example shows a resident’s street address where his/her driving license should appear. Another shows birth certificate information on the “Expired Library Card” page

of the application. Yet a third section asks for language preference, but does not offer English or Spanish as a choice. Those Texas legislators are some kind of cut-ups, aren’t they just precious? So far, it is unclear whose if anyone’s LPD was on display when officials failed to call that face mask foul in the late moments of the Super Bowl. Their decision is still under intense review at the highest levels. Canadian truck drivers have been setting a new record for LPD with the largest number of big rigs parked at and on the Ambassador Bridge between the U.S. and Canada. It’s said to be the busiest bridge in America but lately, not so much. As of Tuesday, reports suggest that rather few actual Ukrainians thus far have put their bomb shelter LPD into practice. EID seeks grant to rebuild longest flume in concrete Michael Raffety Democrat correspondent With the El Dorado Irrigation District struggling to rebuild three burned-out flumes at once, the water agency is seeking a potential $10 million grant to help replace its longest wooden flume with concrete. Flume 46 is 3,340 feet. Were it to be burned in a forest fire EID “would have a severe and prolonged water outage due to the length of the flume and the long timeframe required to reconstruct a flume of this magnitude in this remote location, further impacting water supply during drought conditions,” according to an EID staff report. “Based on grant program guidelines, the Flume 46 replacement project is a strong candidate for funding,” the report states. Timing of design and construction will be updated in the next capital improvement program in the fall. The district already received $750,000 from county sources to design a replacement and pump station for the Sly Park Intertie. That project also received a $10 million grant from the Department of Water Resources. The Sly Park n

Daubert got off a shot that rebounded off the goalie and into the feet of sophomore Price, who had two defenders and the goalie coming toward her but squeaked the ball into the back of the net cutting the Manteca lead in half. The Bruins defense led by seniors Carly Smith, Taryn Thalhamer and Julia Stone didn’t let Manteca even get close to scoring a goal in the second half. “This is their last year so they were playing with everything they’ve got because they don’t want it to end,” said Ponderosa coach Joe Humphrey. n

CECILIA (CEC) MORTON HILL 1924 – 2022

ecilia Morton Hill was born in Sloughhouse, California on April 20, 1924. Cecilia was an 11th generation descendant of George Morton who came to America on the Ship Ann and was one of the founders of New Plymouth Colony, Mass. Cecilia graduated from Placerville Grammar School and from El Dorado County High School. During her “teens” Cec worked at the Blue Bell Café, Murray’s Stationery, The Ivy Motel and Placerville Fruit Growers. In 1942,

Cec was hired by PG&E when the office was upstairs at 516 Main Street, Placerville. She met Stanley Hill who also worked for PG&E after serving in the Marine Corp. on the Pacific Front during WW2. Stan and Cec married on August 30, 1947. Following their employment at PG&E, in 1952, they purchased Stan Hill’s Chevron Station and Frosty on Main Street, El Dorado. All of their children were employed at either the gas station or the frosty throughout their teens. When Stan went skiing and broke his leg, Cec pumped gas, washed windows and checked oil at the full-service gas station. After Stan’s death, Cec became a tour-guide for Frontier Travel, taking large groups of people all over the US, Canada, Alaska, and Hawaii. Like all people, friend or stranger, who have had the honor to be in Cec’s company, they were met with a spectacular smile, and a warm welcome. Cecilia was the mother of four children: Elizabeth Hunton, Red Lodge, Montana; Stanley L. Hill (Cindy), El Dorado, CA; Kathy Lahargoue (George) Rescue, CA; Michelle Smith (Rick) El Dorado, CA. She is the grandmother to 7 children, and great-grandmother to 9 children. Cecilia was such an extraordinary woman of many talents. She was a remarkable mother and friend. Our family was so blessed to have such a treasure as our mother. A Rosary and a Mass will be held in Cec’s honor on February 23, 2022, at St. Patrick’s Church. The Rosary will be at 10:30 followed by a Mass at 11:00. A luncheon will be provided for all following the Mass. They allow you to walk on snow without sinking in to your knees. It’s unlikely that you need a lesson if you’re new to them. Not a bad idea though if you’re challenged by gravity like I am. While not overly expensive, renting for your first time out is smart. Wylder Hope Valley, run by Joyce Coker; Kirkwood Cross-Country and Snowshoe Center, run by Debbi Walder; Sierra Ski and Cycle Works, with Gary Bell at the helm; and Camp Richardson Mountain Sports Center have rentals. Lessons are available at Wylder and Kirkwood. Nothing elaborate or technical, just an introduction to walking with snowshoes on and staying upright, knowing what’s possible and what is just plain wacky. Where to go? Head upcountry and find anywhere you can legally and safely park off the road. Nearby forests offer multiple snowy spots to explore. In the Crystal Basin Recreation Area you could start at Ice House and enjoy a trip along the lake or out to the campgrounds. Further up the road, snowshoe to Bassi Falls if you’re up to it. It will test your stamina and reward you with winter wonder. Robbs Hut would be another wonderful Crystal Basin trek. There’s quite a bit of climbing to test your limits. Snowshoe anywhere around Loon Lake, down to the boat ramp, into the campground, over the dams, take your pick for a wonderful day. Stay off the lake. It’s dangerous. In Tahoe snowshoeing through the Tallac Historic Estates and along the shore of Lake Tahoe is really quite nice. From the Camp Richardson Mountain Sports Center you’ll be able to explore the forest across from the lake. It’s a good place to learn and practice as are Baldwin and Pope beaches. In Hope Valley either side of Highway 88 is just as wonderful in winter as any other time of year. You could spend all day out there, more than once, and not get enough of it. Woods Lake would be a bit of a trek, but worth it if you’re capable of doing it on snowshoes. Even if you only get halfway there it’s worth the effort. Silver Lake is beautiful in the snow and offers plenty of space to snowshoe. Stay off the lake. Right now the snow can be a bit on the icy order early in the day due to the freeze/thaw cycle. It loosens up, especially in open areas, through the day. Due to the lack of recent snowstorms and mild daytime temps, there may be areas and trails that are walkable with just your hiking boots and adjustable cross-country poles. Gear up, bundle up, leave no trace. Get outside!

Scaling the uphill slope above Flume 30 has been completed. Concrete canal and concrete flumes will be completed in time to run water through the 22-mile canal and flume system in April “dependent on weather.” EID General Manager Jim Abercrombie told the Board of Directors Feb. 14 that the financial team has been developing information for insurance reimbursement of reconstruction costs and loss of business from hydroelectric power generation. Project manager and senior engineer Cary Mutschler said the project contractor will start moving 3,000 cubic yards of soil to the sites of the three flumes Syblon Reid is rebuilding.

Intertie connects Reservoir A Water Treatment Plant at the base of Jenkinson Lake and Reservoir 1 Water Treatment Plant in Pollock Pines. The existing pipe was installed in 1978 following the 1975-77 drought. It is leaking and needs to be entirely replaced. Also, rights of way need to be acquired. On Feb. 14 the board unanimously approved a $1 million design contract to Water Works Engineers to design the Sly Park Intertie improvement project. Reconstruction of the three burned flumes has been progressing with favorable weather in January and this month. Heavy rain in October caused some problems but the biggest impediment to progress was heavy snowfalls in December. Prior to that EID hydro crews rebuilt Flume 4 as a wood flume after hazardous material left by the Caldor Fire was removed and a new bench installed.

The driver of a 2008 Ford Escape who was reportedly traveling north at about 55 mph on Missouri Flat Road made an unsafe left turn and left the roadway where the vehicle struck a guy wire and barreled into the New Beginnings parking lot. “Anything can be repaired but (the tow truck) is so far gone, it’s probably going to cost 10 times as much to repair it than what it’s worth,” Haskins said. Haskins said New Beginnings is considering replacing the tow truck with a new truck instead of having it repaired. A new truck would have much to live up to though, with Towey gaining a lot of popularity over the years as the organization’s mascot, especially in the “spot the tow truck” contest where people took selfies with the truck if found. “It’s been a such a valuable fundraising tool, it would really be sad not to have another option,” New Beginnings Operations Manager Emma Burns said. Burns said New Beginnings employees arrived to work that morning to see Towey surrounded by caution tape and debris from the collision. The New Beginnings sign also took damage. This is the first time I have ever stayed in one place for this long and the first time I became a part of the community which I lived (Natures Wonderland). A lot of you have actually watched me grow up through my adult life. Living in Pollock Pines CA has been a dream come true, always wanted to live in the snow. I will never forget driving up Hwy 50 from Placerville east and it started to snow, I said this is where I want to live and never looked back and made many friends, acquaintances and business colleges in the past 28 years. I have been in the home care field for 33 years, worked as a care provider up to a business owner. On March 8, 2008 (A Helping Hand Home Care) was born in Pollock Pines, in January 2015 started suppling Medical Transportation division of A Helping Hand and have had the

privilege of serving Pollock Pines and the community of El Dorado County for the past 15 years. Wow what a ride. It was scary and exciting all at the same time and I’m so glad I got to experience it all. As it appears the pandemic isn’t going away anytime soon and all the new fees and regulations for home care agencies in the state of California, I have decided to call it quits. I purchased some property and cabin in Oregon four years ago and moved up here full time in July, 2020 in a small town called Rocky Point (45 min south of Crater Lake) in the southern Cascade Mountains. This is where I will retire until I’m too old and then will move closer to the valley of Medford. So many of you have been a mentor to me during my adventure and helped me get A Helping Hand off the ground and county contracts. I’m so grateful to all of you. The Bruins were firing off shots on goal at a high rate and were narrowly missing, until Kyla Daniels tied up the game 2-2 in the 71st minute by booting the ball into the back of the net with her left foot. “Julia (Stone) made a run and it moved the defender out and that really helped so that I could score,” Daniels said. When the Bruins tied the game up, the momentum change was visible as Manteca defenders stood dejected on the field while the Bruins and their fans cheered. “I was just so happy that she was able to tie it back up,” Hayes said Ponderosa nearly won the game in the final seconds of regulation before the game went to overtime after the Manteca goaltender made a great save. Just like the second half, the Bruins came out dominating the ball

in overtime. And in the 88th minute, Hayes scored the game-winning goal for the Bruins after she called for a pass from a teammate. “I turned it. I didn’t think I had it. I was kind of off balance but I just took an extra touch, took my space and I just hit it,” Hayes said. The ball boomed into the back of the net, giving the Bruins a 3-2 lead and sending the team and the crowd into a moment of pure bliss. “It was absolutely amazing,” Price said. “It’s the happiest I’ve felt in a long time.” Humphrey echoed her sentiments. “You can say that I don’t have a voice,” Humphrey said. “To see Brooklyn turn and make that was just a super proud moment as a coach. I love seeing them excel in those times because that’s what it’s all about, all the hard work that they put in, all the extra training. eist Wines is a boutique winery located in the Sierra foothills and owned by Susan Webb. Originally from Los Angeles, Webb relocated to Northern California to attend University of California Berkeley in 1994. She is the mother of five children ages 8 to 24. Moving to Amador County to pursue organic farming, she was soon drawn to the both historical and burgeoning wine business there. Seeing that there was wine everywhere in the Sierra foothills yet food and service of the quality she was used to was virtually impossible to find, Webb shifted to a career in restaurants. Learning the business from seasoned maitre’d of famed Chez Panisse in Berkeley, Gerry Budrick and his wife Deborah, a skilled chef, at their now closed cafe in Sutter Creek she was quickly absorbed. With a vision of a casual, roadside wine country establishment for vintners, locals and travelers alike, Webb began renovations, which are ongoing. “I miss the cafés of Berkeley and the culture that they bring with them,” said Webb “I want to create a place that people can gather, listen to great music and create community.” The bar, restaurant and music venue is now called the Drytown Social Club and houses the Feist tasting room. The menu includes organic salads, fresh breads, artisan cheeses and charcuterie and grilled sausages made from locally raised pork. In late spring Feist will add wood-fired pizza to the menu. Desserts by local pastry chef Ingrid Fraser are available as well as coffee and tea and an assortment of craft beer, imported wines and nonalcoholic beverages. Drytown Social Club opened with back-to-back weekends of solo shows. Full-sized steam locomotive going for test run News release

Placerville & Sacramento Valley Railroad volunteers will be steaming up “The Chiggen” for a test run this weekend.

FOLSOM — Folsom residents will hear the whistle and chugging sound of a full-size steam locomotive running through town for the first time in 65 years. Placerville & Sacramento Valley Railroad will be steaming up the Santa Cruz Portland Cement No. 2, known as “The Chiggen,” for the first time this weekend. P&SVRR will be test running No. 2 in anticipation of passenger service later this year. The historical Southern Pacific Placerville branch line last saw a steam locomotive on the tracks in 1957 during a good-by to steam excursion originating in Oakland. Placerville & Sacramento Valley railroad is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving California’s rich railroad history. An all-volunteer organization, P&SVRR operates scenic train excursions year-round on portions of Southern Pacific Railroad’s historical Placerville Branch between Folsom and Latrobe. Since its founding in 2008, ridership has grown steadily and the program now serves more than 7,000 passengers annually.

Porter, this oil-burning 0-4-0 standard gauge tank engine served Santa Cruz Portland Cement Co. in Davenport as well as Bechtel Kaiser Rock Co. in Oroville, where she operated with a former Folsom Prison locomotive. Affectionately known as “The Chiggen,” a moniker derived from its time as a billboard for a fried chicken restaurant for more than 30 years near Stockton, the locomotive was purchased by Efstathios Pappas in 2006. Restoration to operating condition was completed in 2014. This engine pulled excursion passenger trains at Niles Canyon Railway, Roaring Camp Railroads, Mount Rainier Scenic Railroad and the Northwest Railway Museum.

ACRAMENTO — The Cosumnes River College Art Department hosts eight ceramic artists who take on identity in the newest exhibit, Real ID, beginning Feb. 22 and running through March 29. The gallery will be open for in-person viewing for the first time since the pandemic closed the campus. The sculptures will address the themes of identity and connectivity to the earth and include artists Shenny Cruces, Arthur Gonzalez, Pancho Jiménez, Jessica Putnam-Phillips, Kevin Snipes, Stan Welsh and Wanzin Zhang. Art from Northern California and across the country was selected by curator Linda S. Fitz Gibbon. “The theme arose from thoughts about how, as rich and diverse as we are as humans, identity can be used to create boundaries in today’s society. What does a Real ID card really signify? Identity can be multi-faceted and fluid,” said Fitz Gibbon. Held in coordination with the annual National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts conference, Real ID is an NCECA Venue Originated Exhibition. The mission of the NCECA is to cultivate learning, leadership and excellence in the

This year’s conference, Fertile Ground, is being held in Sacramento. “I hope that viewers will be able to see themselves reflected in some aspect of the artworks. Let’s take a breather from reviewing motion pictures for a bit and take a look at two of the more discussed television shows streaming right now. This shouldn’t be hard, as there have been such a small amount of new Joshua B. Porter films in theaters the last two months that Democrat correspondent most people only need one hand to count the new releases. Why not use that extra time to give two “small screen” shows — on opposite sides of the television spectrum, I might add — some attention. Both shows have finished their respective seasons, so I can successfully follow my self-imposed rule of not reviewing a television show until an entire season has dropped.

sing the launchpad of the first two seasons of the hit show “The Mandalorian,” comes “The Book of Boba Fett,” the second live action “Star Wars” show on the streamer. “The Mandalorian” is a very good show that relies on mostly new characters we’ve never met to tell its story, complete with a surprise character in the form of a young-looking version of Yoda who completely stole the hearts of pop culture zeitgeists. When the “The Mandalorian” hit season two it slowly but surely introduced some characters we had seen in the universe in the past, including the infamous bounty hunter Boba Fett as well as a version of Luke Skywalker fans have been waiting literally decades to see again, but the show continued to keep its eye on the price by remaining focused on the story and journey of the titular character and his “baby Yoda” sidekick. “The Book of Boba Fett” is not as successful or consistent with its narrative and is an entertaining but frustratingly unfocused and ultimately unnecessary deep dive into a character who works better as a helmeted mystery. I was fine with the idea of a limited Boba Fett series that explains what happened to the anti-hero after the events of “Return of the Jedi” (1983), but the execution is wonky. When your show’s namesake is the least interesting character on screen you are playing catch up for most of the season. There are some really interesting episodes, including episodes five and six (it’s a seven-episode season), but even that is a backhanded compliment

because Boba Fett doesn’t appear on screen in either episode for more than a minute or two. Basically, the best parts of the show constitute “The Mandalorian” season 2.5. Here’s hoping they give the character and storytelling a bit more focus (and for goodness sake, some of the mystery and edge that made the character beloved in the first place!) if there is to be a season two.

‘And Just Like That ...’ ★★★ TV mini-series (10 episodes) Tv-MA, 1 hour Comedy, Drama, Romance Now streaming on HBO Max

loved the show “Sex In The City.” I’ll admit that I wasn’t exactly the target audience when it premiered on HBO in 1998 and I didn’t start watching the show until after the series finale in 2004. After hearing from a lot of friends (including several men) that it was a great show, I finally gave in and rented the first season from the Blockbuster Video store where I worked at the time. I binged the whole series in two weeks. Call it a guilty pleasure if you want. I stand by my opinion that it’s one of the 50 best television shows ever, warts and all. The show spawned two feature films; 2008’s passable “Sex and the City” and 2010’s dreadfully boring “Sex and the City 2.” To me, these stories always work best as episodic television. HBO Max must have realized this, as it ordered a sequel series soon after the streamer launched ■

Almost all the cast has returned, with one glaring omission: Kim Cattrall (“Big Trouble In Little China,” “How I Met Your Father”) refused to return, leaving her incredibly popular Samantha Jones character behind. We still get Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon back as Carrie, Charlotte and Miranda, respectfully, along with the rest of the colorful supporting characters, as well as a few new ones intended to fill the void Cattrall’s absence leaves. Some of the new characters work but some don’t. One of the new characters who has been the most divisive is Che Diaz, played by Sara Ramirez. The Che character is a nonbinary comedian who’s “X, Y and Me” podcast serves as a narrative stopgap after the writers decide Parker’s character Carrie Bradshaw wouldn’t have her weekly “Sex and The City” column anymore so they put her on as a co-host of this show. Despite the semi-interesting character backstory Ramirez does her

best with, the main purpose of the Che character is to be a harbinger for Miranda’s significant life changes. The problem is ... not for a second did I believe Che felt the same way about

Miranda as Mirada felt for her. Maybe this was intentional, but I don’t think so. Also, Che’s podcast seems like it was scripted by writers who don’t listen to very good podcasts. An aspect of the show I did like is that it is actually about something. The first episode starts off with the rug being pulled out from under us with Carrie’s husband John “Mr. Big” Preston dying, so we immediately know the show runners have decided to set up Carrie as single again since that was so effective on the 1998 incarnation. Each character is given plenty to do, with some subplots being more effective than others. While clunky in parts and cringeworthy in others, “And Just Like That …” still works due to the wonderful chemistry the three leads possess together and their unique perspectives of entering life in their mid-50s. Some episodes can pull at the heartstrings while others fall flat on their face attempting to capture some of the humor and mirth of the

original series (advice: try not to be so “hip” with the dialog), but I still found myself wanting to see what the next episode brought, even if my wife couldn’t believe I was so interested in this show. The building blocks are there for the show to improve in season two (if there is one), but the show runners need to tighten the story and not focus on so many unnecessary characters. There’s a valid argument to be made that the new show betrays some characters and their storylines from the original series, but I will still recommend it for fans.
