GDPUD Board of Directors President Michael Saunders at the board’s Feb. 9 meeting announced Cindy Garcia had tendered her resignation. Saunders read a statement Garcia posted to her Facebook page: “Sometimes you must let go of a dream in order to do your duty … My mother has suddenly become quite infirmed and I must now care for her full time. I simply cannot spread myself so thin as to try and do justice to both the GDPUD community and my family.” Garcia, who had been named board vice president in December, states she is relocating to Florida. “I have lived and

like he was doing some sit-ups. Kay noticed he was no longer moving and did not seem to be breathing — Kay and Jayne immediately began to administer CPR until emergency responders arrived on scene. Dan had suffered a heart attack. “I dropped dead,” said Dan,

“the girls (Kay and Jayne) did CPR and saved my life.” Between the efforts of his companions and the responding EMTs, the 60-year-old reportedly received CPR for nearly 25 minutes. He was rushed to Marshall See THRIVING, page A4

Pamela Masters-Flynn, 93, passed away at the Gold Country Retirement Home. She was born in China. Pamela and her family were prisoners in a prison camp during World War II. After being released, they made it to California in 1945. Pamela met Owen Jay Masters and they married in 1949. They moved to Camino in the late '50s and bought an apple orchard. Pamela opened Sierra Gold Graphics in the mid '70s. Jay Masters passed away in 2002. She is survived by two daughters Rebel and Gillian and one grandson, Dakota.

1:32 a.m. Deputies were dispatched to a verbal dispute in Pollock Pines. 8:38 a.m. During a traffic stop in Georgetown for vehicle code violations deputies found a 52-year-old man on post-release community supervision driving with a suspended license. A search revealed narcotics paraphernalia and the driver was arrested.

Alleged gun-wielding man arrested Dawn Hodson Staff writer Placerville Police in cooperation with El Dorado County sheriff ’s deputies located and arrested a man Thursday alleged to have threatened another man with a gun in Placerville. The incident began when police received a call around 8 a.m. that a man reportedly pointed a gun and threatened another man in the rear parking lot of McDonald’s on

JORJ JEFFREY PERRY Broadway. When officers arrived they learned the suspect jumped a fence and had last been seen in a nearby creek. Police say the man was positively

identified as Jorj Jeffrey Perry, 50, a transient whose last known address was in Shingle Springs. Because the creek runs below the parking lot at the Hangtown Village Square and is unlit, the police requested assistance from the Sheriff ’s Office, whose deputies utilized a drone equipped with a camera to check the unlit portion of the creek. The drone operator located Perry and he was arrested without incident, according to

reports. The firearm is still missing but police say they think it may be inside the suspect’s vehicle, which will be searched pending a search warrant. Perry has been charged with assault with a firearm and making a criminal threat. The investigation is ongoing and the police said there is no risk to the public at this time. On Jan. 20 the Coast Guard Lake Tahoe station responded to a report of a sunken boat off Pope Beach. Lt. Back for a second try, at Tuesday’s El Dorado County Board of Supervisors meeting the Diamond Springs Parkway Project was up to bat again. The last time the project was before the board was Jan. 26 when different supervisors objected to how the project was to be funded and especially the use of Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians tribal funds as those are one of the few sources of discretionary funds the county has. An expensive project, Phase 1A was expected to cost $15.5 million and Phase 1B $28.3 million with money sourced from Traffic Impact Mitigation fees (20.4%), a Master Circulation and Funding Plan (41.8%), tribe funds (18.6%) the Road Fund (<1%) and anticipated grant funds (18.8%). The project was initially approved as part of a master circulation and financing plan in December 1998 with expectations of being completed by 2014. The plan created a special tax district from which 85% of new sales and property taxes, resulting from development in the Missouri Flat Area, that would otherwise accrue to the General Fund, would be used to pay for the county’s proportional share of

Therapeutic hypothermia is the practice of lowering the core body temperature in order to reduce or slow the possibly damaging effects of a cardiac arrest when blood flow has stopped or slowed to important organs. Experts say they are uncertain why therapeutic hypothermia is effective at curtailing brain damage and increases the chances of a patient waking up after an episode. Specialists postulate the positive effects are due to lowered temperatures slowing down chemical reactions in the brain as well as reducing inflammation. Once at Sutter General Hospital Kay said she was conferred with by the on-staff cardiologist who admitted that they couldn’t possibly know what they would see when Dan woke up. They reminded her that patients who have received CPR for so long a period might experience reduced brain function among other possible complications. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation can be a life-saving technique that aims at keeping blood and

oxygen flowing to the brain and other vital organs when a patient has stopped breathing or their heart has stopped. It does not always immediately revive a patient like in the movies but if continued can save a life until trained medical professionals can assess the situation. The results are not 100% predictable and after cardiac arrest, it is unclear how effective it will be for the patient. Dan, however, said he sustained only minor short-term memory loss and reduced heart function. He was referred for pulmonary rehabilitation at Marshall Medical Center with exercise physiologist Reggie Higashi, who has a certificate in pulmonary rehabilitation, among other professional credentials. Higashi has been in the industry for more than 20 years and said Dan is among his top patients. Dan began his recovery journey just over a month after the cardiac incident wearing a life vest (external defibrillator) and at a minimal exercise level. “Dan has gone from surviving to thriving,” said Higashi, “and has tripled his exercise level. He is doing incredibly well considering he experienced a sudden cardiac death just last October.”

Dan has about eight more weeks of therapy with Higashi and will continue on with his own diet/exercise/medication regimen after that time. He and Kay said they have included more fish and vegetables in their already fairly healthy diet, are watching what they eat and have remained vigilent with their exercise routine. “I count my lucky stars. If you know CPR you could save a life. CPR works,” Dan said. Dan and Kay say they are very happy to continue on with their lives and Dan is forever grateful for the lifesaving efforts of his wife, friend and the medical providers who came to his aid. February is American Heart Month and the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute urges all to take steps to improve heart health — healthy meal planning, exercise and healthy relaxation techniques. In a proclamation from President Joe Biden Feb. 3, he stated heart disease is, “one of the country’s most costly and deadly diseases, (and) it is among the most preventable.” Causing one in four deaths in the U.S., heart disease can refer to several types of heart conditions. One of the most prominent conditions is coronary artery disease, which can lead to heart attack.

Buffering options explored for Tahoe's vacation homes Dawn Hodson Staff writer With Tahoe an ever more popular draw for tourists year-round, the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors has been looking at ways to strike a balance between those who make Tahoe their home and the thriving business of renting vacation homes to visitors. Last December staff presented different options for reducing the number/density of VHRs in Tahoe as well as changes to the VHR ordinance that streamlined permitting and enforcement. The current VHR ordinance sets a cap of 900 permits in the Tahoe Basin but county leaders are also considering a buffer zone around those rentals. A VHR is one dwelling unit, including either a single-family home, duplex or single condominium unit rented for the purpose of overnight lodging for a period of not less than one night and not more than

30 days. At Tuesday’s meeting staff provided the board with four distinct buffering options to choose from. Using spatial tools, staff showed what it would look like if there was a 150-foot, 300-foot or 500-foot buffer around VHRs where no other VHRs would be allowed. Staff also showed what it would look like to have a 1,000-foot buffer around large VHRs that can accommodate 12 or more occupants, where no other large VHRs would be allowed. Staff pointed out the different buffering options essentially place a cap on VHRs, acknowledging the difficulty in determining exactly what that cap would be due to the multitude of permutations that come with different VHR and parcel size scenarios. Estimating the impact, staff said with no buffer the maximum number of eligible VHRs would be 9,739; with a 150-foot buffer the maximum number would ■

This phase includes intersection traffic signals at Missouri Flat Road, Throwita Way and Highway 49. Phase 1B provides necessary turn lane capacity and connects to the Highway 49 improvements, ultimately creating a continuous four-lane roadway corridor from Pleasant Valley Road/ Fowler Lane to Highway 50, and is expected to be completed by 2024. So far a total of $17 million has been spent on the project. During the discussion Supervisor Lori Parlin again brought up her opposition to using tribe Funds for the project, pointing out that 80% of the money used to fund Phase IA came from tribe funds and she preferred that money be used for other road improvements. She added that originally the idea was that the project would be funded with bonds. Objecting not to the need for the project but instead to its design was property owner Diane Murillo whose property is going to be taken for the project using eminent domain. Calling it a “road to nowhere,” she argued for a different project design that wouldn’t involve taking her property. In response Rafael Martinez, director of the county Department of Transportation, insisted the planned realignment is the most cost-effective and also the one preferred by Cal Trans. He added they could lose an existing

grant if local funds were withdrawn from the project as well as jeopardize the county’s ability to get future grants. But Martinez said based on the concerns of some of the board members regarding funding sources, staff came up with four different options for the board to consider. One would be to approve the current funding plan using approximately $5.219 million in tribe funds. Two would be to approve using tribe funds but enter into a repayment agreement with the Community Financing District to pay back the funds and develop a plan to have the Traffic Impact Fee program reimburse the remaining portion. Three would be to

advance $3 million in funds currently designated to build a road for a new courthouse and $2.219 million in funds currently designated for capital building replacement and deferred maintenance to replace the tribe funds, enter into a repayment agreement with the CFD and develop a plan to have the TIF reimburse the remaining portion in order to pay back the funds advanced over a period of 5-10 years with repayment first being made to the capital building replacement and deferred maintenance reserves. Transportation staff would also be directed to continue pursuing additional state funding for the project for potential cost increases.

And four would be to direct staff to explore the feasibility of increasing TIF funds that can be reallocated to the Diamond Springs Parkway Project, which would include a summary of impacts to other projects currently anticipated to be funded with TIF funds.

The board then unanimously voted to receive a presentation regarding the Diamond Springs Parkway Phase 1B Project; adopt the option three revised funding plan; direct transportation staff to continue pursuing additional state funding for the project to cover potential cost increases; and direct staff to return to the board with a repayment schedule.

If you or your children were involved in sports in the county for the last 40 years your lives have been touched by Al. For almost four decades Al trained and supplied officials for almost all middle school, city and county sports. While it’s true not everyone always appreciated the way he touched their lives, Al could be a bit grumpy on the court and did not suffer fools kindly, he had a heart of gold and loved the sports and the kids — always doing his best to make sure the games were fair and the players safe. Al was a huge asset to our community and his contribution to El Dorado County sports cannot be overstated. RIP, old friend, you will be sorely missed and fondly remembered. EDITOR: miss Mardi Gras. I miss being in crowds on Fat Tuesday. I’m hoping for a speedy recovery from the pandemic so we can all congregate again. After Fat Tuesday, Lent began. Lent is the 40-day period before Easter when Christians may fast (i.e. stop eating meat and dairy) in remembrance of Jesus’ 40 days of reflection. As a Christian, Lent has meaning to me. For me, I already don’t eat meat and dairy. My plant-based diet helps reduce chronic diseases, environmental degradation and animal abuse. Countless reports have linked consumption of animal products with risk of heart failure, stroke, cancer and other diseases. A U.N. report named meat production as a source of greenhouse gases and water pollution. Investigations have revealed animals raised for food under horrible conditions of caging, crowding, drugging and mutilation. These actions go against what I believe. Lent offers an opportunity to honor Jesus’ powerful message of compassion and love for all living beings, stop subsidizing the meat industry and choose a nonviolent, plant-based diet. It’s a diet that goes back to the Bible (Genesis 1:29) and

PDA wishes to clarify EDITOR: few clarifications are needed in response to Mr. Cumpston’s recent letter, dated Feb. 8. First, Mr. Cumpston is not a member of the PDA as of Jan. 1. The PDA painstakingly wrote a letter to Mr. Cumpston addressing his many concerns and yet he chooses to ignore that response and carry forward with his misinformation campaign. The PDA lent financial support to the opposition of the conditional use permit that allowed a fast food/chain restaurant into the Central Business District. We did so because nearly 75% of all businesses on Main Street between Bedford and Sacramento streets signed a petition stating their desire to keep the downtown unique and formula free. Mr. Cumpston correctly reports that the PDA authorized the spending of up to $18,000 opposing a formula/chain business. Similarly, he correctly asserts that the PDA authorized spending up to $6,000 on ballot initiatives that were in the interest of protecting downtown. A simple inquiry from Mr. Cumpston would have revealed $9,000 and $383 were spent, respectively. Mr. Cumpston points out that $10,000 was spent on a new website and related marketing efforts. True. Almost the same amount was spent in 2019. The PDA bylaws were written to comply with IRS requirements and follow the guidelines as set forth for a 501c6 nonprofit organization under the California Corporations’ Code. Under that code, the PDA has an obligation to advocate for its member interests as indicated by solicited member response. Such advocacy of member interests may, at times, not be in concert with the city Planning Commission or City Council. When the PDA told the city in January 2020 that it would no longer be accepting the annual grant of $11,000 because of the confusion it created

Several mainstream media outlets have rendered a similar judgment. For example, there was this analysis by PolitiFact: “Schiff said, ‘We have not spoken directly with the whistleblower.’ We rate this statement False.” In the Washington Post: “Schiff earns Four Pinocchios.” From Chicago Tribune columnist John Kass: “Schiff is a dissembler, a prevaricator, a distortionist, a spreader of falsehoods. In Chicago we use the short word: liar.” Schiff ’s history of lying goes back decades. Former congressman John Campbell of Orange County was a regular guest on the NPR affiliate in Pasadena, KPCC, where he would debate Adam Schiff on the issues of the day. According to Campbell, Schiff would lie with an ease that is breathtaking: “He would just make stuff up to prove his point knowing that what was coming out of his mouth wasn’t true. And he would do it so convincingly you’d almost believe him even when you knew he was lying.” California does not need someone as attorney general who has more Pinocchios than the souvenir shop in Disneyland. regarding membership, it was suggested to the city that perhaps they could re-allocate those grant funds to continue these two programs. We turned over to the city $2,400 in restricted funds for the flower basket program. Additionally, the PDA gifted the city tens of thousands of dollars’ worth of holiday decorations. Unfortunately, this handing over of resources has been characterized as the PDA “dropping” the programs. Mr. Cumpston comes dangerously close to slander and libel when he says the board spent money in service of their personal interests and private political agendas. As an attorney, one would think Mr. Cumpston would be wary of making such speculative and egregious comments. The PDA’s relationship to the city has changed from being the compliant party planner to a strong advocate voice for preserving the unique character of historical downtown. Much of the current tension is rooted in the city’s promotion of formula/ chain businesses within this district. The PDA hopes to work with the city to create a stronger ordinance that will protect the Central Business District from further additions of formula/chain businesses. Garon’s latest letter EDITOR:

r. Garon’s recent letter is a classic farce. He begins by asserting that the only book Trump owned, based on Ivanka’s memoirs, was “Mein Kampf.” He then indicates that Trump “followed faithfully” the road to “future power” outlined in this book. Fact check 1: The notion that Trump owns only one book does not pass the credibility test. Fact check 2: According to Snopes, the book he had was a copy of Hitler’s speeches called “My New Order,” given to him by a friend, Marty Davis, of the Paramount studio. Mr. Davis confirms this. Subsequently, Trump mistakenly indicated the book was “Mein Kampf,” which suggests to us how much attention Trump actually paid to the book. According to an unflattering Vanity Fair article, and a Barbara Walters interview, Trump indicated “If I had these speeches, and I am not saying that I do, I would never read them.” Meanwhile, on the social media rounds in April 2019, per Snopes, a fake Trump quote describing the “profound effect” of reading “Mein Kampf ” and the “tremendous respect” he had for Hitler as a leader made the rounds. Mr. Garon and other lefties likely fell for that one. Garon uses lies (“Mein Kampf ” is the blueprint) and fear mongering (Hitler is Trump) to persuade his audience — all while asserting that the nation has yet to learn to “think critically.” Finally, he wraps it all up with an obligatory swipe at Congressman McClintock for “treason” for “siding with the thugs who assaulted Congress.” Mr. Garon, if you had any sense of decency, you’d stop writing mendacious and deceitful letters to the editor and perhaps learn to “think critically” yourself. Souza at the time said, “I feel that the board will not move in a positive direction and I am no longer able to effectively serve the majority of the residents and staff.” Souza, who like Garcia was elected in 2018, said his resignation was a result of shifting dynamics on the board as a result of the November 2020 election. “Director (Cynthia) Garcia is a micromanager of the board and the other three board members will follow her lead. She ran off the past general manager and a future general manager candidate was reluctant to be hired if the incumbents were not re-elected to the board,” he said. Seaman has lived in Cool since 2015. She has a bachelor’s degree in environmental management and has worked in the field of water and wastewater from 1992 to 2008. The newly appointed director holds an operator certificate, has worked as a treatment inspector and has taught in the field. From 2008 to when Seaman retired last year she was an environmental program manager for the federal government, covering an area from Utah to Guam. Seaman said she wanted to serve on the GDPUD Board of Directors to gain a clearer understanding of “why they do what they do” and especially to better understand why the water agency’s customer service is not better. Seaman’s term in office runs until 2022. The GDPUD board is expected to appoint another new director to fill Garcia’s seat in coming weeks. The district is currently taking applications for the position.

Honda’s crossover well-equipped, priced

Honda’s CR-V crossover shares an ubiquity rivaled by few. Like a Subway restaurant, you see them everywhere, and you can count on them for their affordable dependability (as long as Subway doesn’t drench your Classic Italian in mustard). In fact, Honda sold nearly 400,000 CR-Vs in the U.S. last year, trailing only arch nemesis Toyota’s RAV4 in sales, but not by much. For reference, there are only 24,000 Subways in the country. After spending a week with the Hybrid Touring model, we found it to be an appeasing car, doing most everything well — but not anything particularly great. Possessing singular or, dare to dream, plural attributes that score as excellent could make a vehicle like a CR-V too interesting. Playing it safe with a sales leader is never a bad play. This hybrid does return “good” efficiency but we’d hardly call it “great” in this new decade. The EPA rates the CR-V Hybrid at 40 mpg city and 35 mpg highway. With modest driving during its test run the CR-V averaged 32 mpg overall and on the freeway at 70 mph returned 31. Good numbers these would have been 10 years ago but now, and compared to a RAV4 Hybrid, they are underwhelming. It is still better than the nonhybrid CR-V — but not by much. Performance and the nature of the hybrid powertrain are seamless, being remarkably better than the agricultural creations of yesteryear. Power delivery is smooth and uninterrupted

The 2021 Honda CR-V Hybrid may not have the most fuel efficiency in its class but it's got an attractive design and price point. in regular driving, highlighting the benefits of what a hybrid system can offer. Pulling away from a stop, the CR-V feels almost eager — that and decent throttle response makes the CR-V day-to-day an easy and thoughtless driving experience. At higher speeds the Honda begins to show a lack of grunt. Zero-60 needs 8 seconds; 50-70 is a long 5 seconds; and 50-70 uphill a dramatic 8.6 seconds as the CR-V Hybrid struggles to make progress above 50 mph. It’s clear hills are its mortal enemy. The CR-V hybrid is not capable of any kind of extended electric vehicle mode that others are now sporting. Where a RAV4 Hybrid was able to drive up the quarter-mile hill in my neighborhood on my way home completely in EV mode, the CR-V Hybrid would never switch to electric; we only ever noticed the complete reliance of battery power through parking lots. Allowing for more electric-only driving would surely increase the miles-per-gallon, which is perhaps the RAV4 Hybrid’s party trick in the

gas mileage race. All-wheel-drive provides extra surety and erases any chance of torque steer from the front wheels wriggling the steering wheel from your hands. It’d be silly to talk about the CR-V Hybrid’s handling like we would a sportscar so we won’t, but it just doesn’t provide the same confidence and natural ability as something like a Mazda CX-5 does. Conversely, on a long trek through the golden plains north of Sacramento, the CR-V did feel solid on the road, absorbing bumps well despite (and thanks to) the Hybrid’s stiffer suspension needed to combat the extra weight of the battery and hybrid system onboard. Being stiffer allowed for better control than what we remember the last CR-V we drove exhibiting. Perhaps the biggest selling point of this particular CR-V is the as-tested price of $35,950, fully-loaded. A comparable spec of RAV4 Hybrid will be several thousand dollars more, with flagship limited models costing well into the $40,000s. So for what you get, this

is good value. While it is a more efficient CR-V, it is noticeably off from the RAV4 Hybrid’s mile-pergallon benchmark. So there you have it, a perfectly capable hybrid crossover. For those needing a nicely equipped and nice-looking small SUV with good gas mileage at an extremely compelling price, the Honda CR-V Hybrid makes a lot of sense.

Colin West, founder of Clean up the Lake, said his organization would like to be involved in the streamlining process. Clean up the Lake, founded a year ago, coordinates dive efforts to remove trash and debris from Lake Tahoe and Donner Lake. West said they are currently permitted to pick up smaller items but they’ve pinpointed 100150 items 500 pounds or heavier. So, he’s working on getting permits to remove heavier items. He wants to be one of the groups that is part of the automatic response when a situation like this happens. One thing both Cowen and Fairchild emphasized is when a boat sinks, it’s important to get it out as soon as possible.

saw her and I thought, ‘She’s pretty cute,’” reminisced Al Macys of the Philadelphia hayride in 1949 that had him asking a pretty brunette for a turn on the dance

floor. “He asked me to dance and I remembered it because he did not step on my feet,” laughed Helen. “Most of the other guys, the younger guys, when you danced with them they would step on my feet.” Al and Helen are 14-year residents of El Dorado Hills’ Four Seasons community. And more than 70 years ago, Al’s nimbleness was enough to get 16-year-old Helen thinking. She decided to ask him to her high school sorority’s Valentine’s dance the following spring. That’s when the trouble started. First, there was the gossip about Al having to borrow money to cover his bill on a date with another girl. “Here I asked this guy to go the dance with me and he’s broke,” she said. Then, thinking he was being considerate, Al called and asked what kind of flowers Helen liked. “I said carnations and he brought me an orchid,” Helen remembered. “So I guess he’s not broke. I was a little irked.” “Who wants carnations?” Al shrugged. “She wanted the carnation because of the gown she was wearing. When I came in with this white orchid,

ip, an 8-year-old McNab dog who works on his family’s bed and breakfast at The Davies Family Inn at Shadowridge Ranch, earned second place in the first California Farm Bureau Farm Dog Contest at the 102nd California Farm Bureau annual meeting in December. When Jim Davies met Tip, he said the pup was a freckled, brown and white, roly-poly McNab about 6 weeks old. Tip belonged to Jim’s daughter and her husband, who were planning to employ Tip as a cattle dog once he matured. Tip could listen well and liked to help find the cattle, Jim said, “but was smart enough to know that at 35 pounds, it was only a matter of time before some cranky old cow would lash out a hind leg and connect with his pearly whites.” Out of a job, Tip needed a new home. Jim and his wife Linda decided to take care of Tip until a home could be found. Before long, they both liked Tip immensely and decided to keep him. “It became apparent that Linda wanted to hang on to him and I must admit I was growing fond of him as well,” Jim shared. Once Tip arrived at Davies Family Inn he became Jim’s helper. Whether Jim is maintaining the main lodge, carriage house, ceremony sites, pavilion, manicured meadow and natural landscaping or harvesting table grapes, apples, pears, walnuts or even Christmas trees, Tip is right by his side. When they are done working, Jim said Tip seems to forget about working and follows Linda around the house “like the proverbial puppy dog he is.” If Jim and Linda are sitting and talking, Tip loves to situate himself in the middle of them to receive as much attention as possible. n

Carter served as governor of Georgia from 1971 to 1975 and then defeated Gerald Ford in the 1976 presidential election. He would serve just one term, however, losing to Ronald Reagan in the 1980 race. He also faced a tough fight from the left in the form of Ted Kennedy. He was defeated in a landslide, 489-49 in the electoral college, and carried just six states and Washington, D.C. The former president left politics after losing his reelection bid and threw himself into charity work. He started the Carter Center in that pursuit and has been the leading face of Habitat for Humanity for decades. she was irked because it didn’t go with what she was wearing.” Al goes on to describe, in detail, Helen’s pink dress, which floors her. “Oh my gosh, you remember it?” exclaimed Helen. “Damn right I do,” replied Al. “She didn’t like me because of my looks; she liked me because of my feet. It took me a while to get over that.” Although Helen was almost four years younger than Al, she was different than any other girl he had dated. She was interesting, fun and he was smitten. Despite some competition with a handsome West Point cadet, Helen ultimately discovered she was smitten back. An accomplished pianist and already accepted to the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, Helen decided instead to attend Penn State where Al was already studying mechanical engineering. Since her parents were adamant that Helen finish college before marrying, they waited four years to tie the knot on Aug. 28, 1954. They will celebrate their 67th wedding anniversary this year. “I know I can’t be without her,” Al declared. “Every day that she comes out here,

I enjoy her being around even when she gets irked with me.” Helen is obviously proud not only of her husband’s accomplishments, but also his insistence on helping at home. While working full time, Al managed to rack up two additional degrees in electronic physics and engineering sciences. “I just love being with him and doing things with him. He’s always been very positive,” she said. After retiring, Al asked to take over in the kitchen. “He has been doing the cooking ever since.”

In 1973 the Macys moved to Los Gatos, where Susan was able to attend special programs in San Jose. Sadly, Susan died 20 years ago. “She was the core of our lives,” said Helen, adding that their other children, Sandra and Robert, were indispensable in taking care of Susan. Along with their involvement with special education, music has been a constant for Al and Helen. Through singing for three major choral groups, they traveled to 12 countries throughout the world. “Everywhere we would go in any new country or significant place I would have somebody take a picture of my kissing her,” said Al. From St. Petersburg to Paris, Al the Kissing Bandit struck again and again. Even after Al and Helen decided to follow their oldest, Sandra, to El Dorado Hills, music continued to play a major role in their lives, from singing in the Foothills Church choir to karaoke at the Gilmore Senior Center. “I like Sinatra ballads,” Al said, also mentioning the likes of ABBA and Queen. He said he doesn’t understand JLo, but Cole Porter is a longtime favorite. “I think that we were both interested in music really kept us together for all these years,” Helen said.
