Obituary Richard Francis (Dick) Walters Aug. 30, 1930 — Jan. 18, 2021

Richard Francis Walters (Dick) died on Jan. 18 at the age of 90. Dick was born Aug. 30, 1930, in Romania, the son of American parents. His father was a petroleum geologist in the Ploesti Oil Fields. Dick came to America when he was 9, and lived in Scarsdale, N.Y., during the war years. He graduated from Williams College, earned his master’s degree from the University of Wyoming, a graduate degree from the University of Bordeaux, France, and a Ph.D. in geology from Stanford in 1957. After working for 11 years in the oil industry, he joined the UC Davis School of Medicine, working on computer applications to medicine in 1967. His career evolved due, as he said, to serendipity. He discovered his interest in teaching while he was a graduate student, and in the oil business started working with computers. Glen Snodgrass, a next-door neighbor in New Orleans, invited Dick to come to the newly opened School of Medicine at UCD to apply his computer knowledge to teaching and medical records. Dick was a true pioneer in the computer field — his passion for teaching and learning led him to develop ways to use technology to support hybrid and online forms of learning as an alternative to traditional lecture-style instruction. He helped form and served as the first chair of the department of computer science from 1983 to 1989. He retired in 2000, but remained active in teaching and learning and in the UCD Emeriti Association, serving as its membership chair for many years. He married Shipley Newlin in 1952, just before starting his graduate work. Shipley shared his passion for singing, and they were founding members of the newly formed

choir at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church in 1967, and have sung with that choir ever since. They also helped found the Davis Comic Opera Company, in which Dick played several roles including the judge in Gilbert and Sullivan’s “Trial by Jury.” They had two children, Leslie Tuomi (husband Scott Tuomi) who lives in Portland, and David Walters of Davis. Leslie has been involved with music and the arts all her life; David is an emergency physician at Sutter Davis Hospital, whose rock bands, Custom Neon and Wealth of Nations, perform often in the Davis area. Dick was devoted to his four grandchildren: Jenson and Duncan Tuomi, Ellen Walters and Lisa Walters Schmitz. One of Dick and Shipley’s major interests was in traveling around the world. They took many walking tours in Europe, giving them an opportunity to use their abilities in foreign languages, notably French but also several others. Dick’s career took him to many countries, including Japan, Australia, Brazil and Singapore and countries in Europe. Dick will be remembered for his extensive involvement with the Episcopal Church of St. Martin, the Davis campus and his international work in promoting MUMPS, a computer language used extensively in medical records for which he wrote a widely used textbook. When asked which words best described him, Dick chose: serendipity, music, travel, languages, caring and creativity. A memorial service will be scheduled after COVID restrictions are lifted, to celebrate his life with the music that was so important to him. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Episcopal Church of St. Martin in Davis.

Lovely dinner guest has no conscience Dear Annie: My wife and I have a close friend whom, in non-pandemic times, we invited over for dinner or cocktails at least once or twice a week. We’ve spent many holidays together over the last 10 or so years. We love her like a sister. The only problem is she never brings anything to our house, and I mean never. She also has never invited us over to her house for drinks, dinner or anything, except to take care of her animals when she is gone on shopping trips. Once in a while, like on holidays, we’ve tried asking her to bring a dessert or something like that, and she’s acted like it’s a real pain. The one time that she agreed to bring a dessert, she asked us to pick up the ingredients and said she’d make it at our place. How do we bring up our frustrations with this? We don’t want to hurt her feelings. But come on, enough is enough. — Hosed Host Dear Hosed: With friends like you, who needs restaurants? Seriously, though, you shouldn’t be shy about expressing your feelings; she’s certainly had no problem expressing hers. It doesn’t have to be a dramatic confrontation. Just let her know that you love spending time with her but it’s a lot of work for you two to always host, and that it would be a big help if she could bring over food and/or drinks whenever you get together. No good friend would react badly to that. ——— Dear Annie: Last weekend, I had to complete an eight-hour project with a man I’d never met before. It was an incredibly long day — because this man talked constantly! It was continuous, nonstop talk about anything and everything, from his divorce, to his children, to his health, to his house, etc. If I had something to say or comment on, he would briefly listen, but then he would get right back into constant chatter. I now know everything about this man that I don’t care to know. What causes someone to talk nonstop? Don’t they realize that it’s annoying? — Carrying Earplugs From Now On Dear Earplugs: There are many possible causes for excessive, nonstop talking, including mental illnesses, brain injury, hearing loss, fear of silence and just plain old self-absorption. Some overtalkers may recognize that it’s irritating but find it difficult to stop. Some might lack self-awareness. In some cases, it can help to confirm that you’ve heard them by repeating a brief summary of it back to them. In others, directness is the only option — e.g., a simple statement such as “I’d like some time to focus on the work, please,” said with a smile. It might feel awkward for a moment, but it’s better than seething for eight hours. Dear Annie: Just to add to your advice to “Not a Fan,” who was tired of her husband’s off-key singing around the house. She should join him every chance she gets: Either they will make beautiful music together or he will realize how bad it is. — Susan D. Dear Susan: You get points for creativity. Thanks for the laugh.

Lack of intimacy Dear Annie: My boyfriend and I have been together for five years. This last year, there has been no physical intimacy between us at all. We vibe very well in our relationship being partners in a small business. He says he is still attracted to me and keeps on blaming our busy work lives for lack of sex. But we are usually home before 10 p.m. and we rarely work on weekends. When we used to have sex, he struggled with erectile dysfunction. I even asked him if he would go to the doctor to see if he had a problem. He agreed to make an appointment, but when the day came he made excuses and did not go. Now it’s gotten to the point where I’ve stopped trying, and he’s not trying either.

Can you please help with some advice here? — It’s Been a Year Dear IBAY: ED is extremely common, impacting an estimated 30 million men in the U.S. While it shouldn’t be cause for embarrassment, it is cause for concern, as it can be an early warning sign of cardiovascular problems including endothelial dysfunction (damage to the lining of blood vessels) or atherosclerosis (the buildup of plaque in the arteries). He might be more receptive to you if you approach it that way — out of concern for his whole-body health — and offer to go with him to the appointment, to offer moral support. I hope he hears you out. ——— Dear Annie: I think you might have missed a chance, recently, to help a woman who had no sense of her own value, in your letter to “Lost.” Instead of referring her to a dating app in which she would latch on to another man who ignores her, “Lost” might benefit from some therapy first. She was so desperate to continue contacting a man who so obviously didn’t care about her. Her level of desperation in continuing to pursue someone after being blocked is a sad example of a person with no sense of boundaries and no love of self. I was in a similar headspace many years ago due to my own poor relationship choices. My life decisions were the product of my low self-esteem and an upbringing that taught me that I needed a man to feel like I have value. I have since received muchneeded counseling in self-compassion, self-worth, and healthy boundaries, as the result of having an emotionally unavailable parent. These days, I know that I deserve a relationship in which I can express my needs to my partner. If they are not met, I can let go of that person, knowing that they are not for me. I trust myself and have erected boundaries that protect me, but also let the right person in. I wish her well. — No Longer Lost Dear No Longer Lost: You’re right. I focused on the wrong aspect of “Lost’s” letter, her dating life, rather than on her inner emotional life and sense of self-worth. Thank you for bringing it back to the heart of the matter. I’m glad to hear you found yourself. ——— Dear Annie: I recently filled a prescription for cough syrup that called for a 10-milliliter dosage. We do not use liters in this country. I had to go online to convert the amount to teaspoons. Could you give a shout to physicians, nurse practitioners and pharmacists to let them know how dangerous this practice is to the patient? — Irked Dear Irked: I did some research to figure out why the pharmaceutical industry would use the metric system in the United States, where it might as well be Greek to many people. According to the National Council for Prescription Drug Programs, a nonprofit standards development organization, the International System of Units, known as SI, is better for designating dosages than the U.S. customary system. The reason is consistency. While the U.S. system has 300 different units, the SI has just seven base units. From the NCPDP: “The use of multiple volumetric units (e.g., teaspoons, tablespoons, droppersful) and multiple abbreviations ... (increases) the likelihood of dosing errors.” That said, the most important thing is that the patient understands how to take the medication he or she is prescribed, and it’s health care providers’ job to see to that. The next time you pick up a prescription, ask your pharmacist for help with converting the dosage. Send your questions for Annie Lane to dearannie@creators.com.
