Residents drive up for COVID-19 vaccine Sel Richard Staff writer Seniors bared their arms and took full advantage of the El Dorado Hills Fire Department’s COVID-19 vaccination clinic Saturday, during which paramedics administered a total of 394 Pfizer vaccines. “It’s been an extremely smooth event,” said EDH Fire Chief Maurice Johnson, of the first drive-through clinic. “Right now it’s just a one-day event, except for Feb. 13 — when everyone who came today has to come back to get their second dose.” Chief Johnson said he hopes to provide a much higher number of vaccinations at future clinics. “We will go back and debrief; we’ll refine that process and probably come Mountain Democrat photo by Sel Richard up with another number, likely to be in Sally Buckley receives her first dose of the Pfizer vaccine from firefighter/paramedic excess of 400, maybe closer to 500, that John VanDalen. sculpture unveiled
fter 10 years of effort the giant, 10-foot-high bronze eagle designed to adorn the new El Dorado County sheriff ’s facility has landed. Friday’s rain took a break as the sculpture’s unveiling brought dignitaries, donors and members of the community to Placerville, where the work was officially unveiled by its maker Georg Schmerholz. Sheriff John D’Agostini described the process it took to get from concept to reality that all began when his wife Janine met Schmerholz at a party and learned he was a world-renowned sculptor who lived in the county. He told her of a large bald eagle he had sculpted out of a solid block of black granite. At the time the county was in the process of designing and arranging financing for a new sheriff ’s facility on Industrial Drive. Later the sheriff and his wife made a visit to Schmerholz’ home to see some of his work and the first thing they were shown was the granite eagle similar to the one commissioned for the sheriff ’s building. But it was smaller and had a salmon in its claws. After seeing the eagle he said he and Janine discussed the possibility of working with Schmerholz to come up with a “long-lasting, significant monument to the agency, the employees of the El Dorado County Sheriff ’s Office and the community (EDSO) serve(s).” They then agreed upon a scaled-up bronze version of the same eagle, minus the salmon. weekend or even more frequent clinics are a possibility. After entering the driveway to EDH Fire Station 86 on Bass Lake Road, attendees who signed up in advance were subjected to a short screening process before receiving the vaccine. Because of the facility’s long driveway, everyone was able to stay in their cars and wait in line to be monitored for the requisite 15 minutes before leaving. “We’ve got firefighters on bikes. That was the best way we could do it because they have to go up and down to monitor people,” said Deputy Chief Mike Lilienthal, who organized the clinic. “We were worried about having folks backed up on Bass Lake Road, which hasn’t happened.” A fire lane was cordoned off to leave room for the fire engine to respond to calls, if necessary.
