Kiley, county leaders slam Proposition 47 Thomas Frey Staff writer El Dorado County’s sheriff and district attorney say they stand behind legislation recently introduced to repeal Proposition 47, a ballot initiative that reclassifies a number of felony theft offenses as misdemeanors. Assemblymember Kevin Kiley (R-Rocklin) earlier this month presented KEVIN KILEY Assembly Bill 1599, to which he and 13 other elected officials are credited. Prop. 47, known as the Safe Neighborhoods and Schools Act, was passed by California voters in 2014 and is a failed experiment, according to Kiley. He represents District 6, which includes parts of the Sacramento region as well as El Dorado Hills and Cameron Park. “After years of failed policies and leadership, California is now experiencing an unprecedented surge in crime,” Kiley said. If a theft involves less than $950 in losses, the crime is a misdemeanor with no prison time. The assembly bill states 1599 would “repeal the changes and additions made by Prop. 47, except those related to reducing the penalty for possession of concentrated cannabis.”

CSD hosts event for jobseekers Sel Richard Staff writer Looking to land your first job? Savvy seekers can get a leg up by attending a Job Skills Workshop hosted by the El Dorado Hills Community Services District, 6-8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 31. The free event, geared toward teens and young adults, offers information on how to make contacts, prepare for an interview and increase your chances of getting hired. “We’re really hoping to bring out high school and college youth for possibly their first job or one of their first jobs as they’re looking to get in the workforce,” said CSD Recreation Superintendent Sandra Montgomery. “Giving them skills that they can take to any workplace, whether they decide to work for us or anywhere else.” The workshop doubles as an opportunity for the CSD to recruit for its own multiple job openings. Each booth will be manned by recreation staff ready to instruct on the specific program areas, available jobs and skill and training requirements. “A lot of teens don’t know that we hire as young as 15 years old,” noted Montgomery. “We hire for our summer jobs starting in January.” Volunteer positions are available for participants younger than 15 or those looking to add to their résumé and contribute to community programs. One valuable feature of the workshop includes the application corner where CSD human resources staff will walk jobseekers through filling out applications as well as impart helpful tips. “Sometimes applications (we get) are completely blank because individuals don’t think
