T
wo Oak Ridge High School seniors rang in the new year in an extraordinary way this January by marching in the Pasadena Rose Parade honor band alongside more than 320 other participants from 40 states across the nation. Upon the suggestion of Oak Ridge Music Director Paul Varoff more than a year-and-ahalf ago, then sophomore Gavin Verandes decided to try out for the Rose Parade Honor Band and convinced his friend Alexios Sideris put his hat in the ring as well. “Mr. Varoff said it was very difficult to get into,” Verandes recounted. “He said that only one other Oak Ridge student has made the ensemble before. “When I told my parents about it, I was skeptical,” he continued. “They told me that I should audition, even if I didn’t think I was going to make it. Fast forward two years later, I made the ensemble and I just went through one of the most memorable experiences of my life.” Verandes is a percussionist in the Oak Ridge band and marched tenor drums this past season. He grew up drumming and playing music, introduced to various instruments by his dad, a musician. On the other hand, Sideris has no musicians ■
