Nuptials
The Chateau at Shiloh by Crazy K Ranch offers both an elegant wedding venue option and much more.
BY KIMBERLY SHELTON
From rustic barn weddings to fun family gatherings, Crazy K Ranch is all about celebrations.
Home to numerous heads of black angus cattle (and even a few ducks), the sprawling 500-acre ranch has been the setting of countless memories since the fall of 2012.
“While we are known for our fabulous indoor and outdoor weddings, we want to showcase our many other offerings,” said Anthony Knight, event coordinator.

“I always tell people that we really are a destination rather than just a venue for nuptials and parties because you can do everything here.”
With numerous events and activities such as their Annual Cattle Sale, Boots and Buckle Dinner (by McNairy County Developmental Services), bridal show and corn maze, it is no wonder that thousands of visitors flock to Crazy K each year.
“Whether you are looking to plan your happily ever after, want to celebrate a special occasion or simply enjoy a tranquil escape, we’ve got you covered,” said Becky Adkins who also serves as an event coordinator for the ranch.
“In addition to company picnics, reunions, anniversaries, birthdays and other gettogethers, we host approximately 100 weddings each year. I think one of the main draws for engaged couples is that you can have everything from the bridal shower and rehearsal to the ceremony and reception, all in one convenient location.”
“Our peak months for weddings are May, June, September and October, but we have something going on here
year-round,” she added. Held in the Big Event Center, Crazy K’s Annual Cattle Sale brings cattleman, ranchers and spectators in from around the globe.
“I always enjoy the cattle sale because it affords the opportunity to showcase the hard work of Charlie Adkins and the other guys who care for our livestock,” said Knight. “A great deal of pride goes into our work, so it is nice to be able to show it off and say, ‘We did that’.”
Knight also expressed his appreciation for the Annual Bridal Show.
“It is such a fun event and a great way to exhibit what we and others in the community have to offer,” he said.
Marrying fun and information, the show, co-hosted by Huffoto, brings together dozens of local and area vendors presenting the latest in photography, catering
and other special event services.
“The bridal show takes the pressure off [brides] by bringing together everything needed to plan the perfect wedding or other special occasion, all under one roof,” said Knight. “It is extremely well attended and our fashion show is always a favorite among guests.”
While weddings are the main attraction, Crazy K is constantly adding to its services.
“Two of our newest additions are our Cypress rooms and the Chateau at Shiloh,” said Knight.
“In addition to our nine fully-furnished cabin rentals that sleep anywhere from two to eight people, we now have six rooms which bring in a lot of out-of-town guests looking for a peaceful escape.”
Fishing, exploring and grilling is also allowed on the property.

Chateau at Shiloh is the perfect venue for those wishing for something a bit more polished.
“Our shabby-chic weddings are always popular, but our exquisite Stantonville chateau now offers couples an elegant option,” said Adkins.
Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of tourists on approximately 1,200 acres, the charming stone mansion backs up to Shiloh National Military Park and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding area.
“The chateau’s Carriage Room boasts wonderful Chiavari leatherback chairs and other lavish furnishings to add to the ambience,” said Knight as he described the romantic setting.
“There are two rooms on site for guests as well as rooms in the main house.”
With the cool, crisp winds of autumn on the near horizon, the staff at the Chateau at Shiloh is gearing up for their Second Annual Corn Maze.
Sure to have guests grinning from “ear-to-ear”, the maze is part of a quaint little town complete with a general store, concession stand and cotton candy machine.
“It is such a fun event because we get to involve the
children from our local schools and churches,” said Knight as he painted a picture of the festivities.
“They have the opportunity to pick pumpkins from our pumpkin patch as well as play in our huge corn crib which is situated in the middle of our town.”
To add to the excitement, there is also a petting zoo with donkeys, horses and other animals as well as live music on the weekends.
Priced at just a couple bucks per person, the three-and-a-half acre corn maze is the perfect way to get lost in the spirit of the season.
According to Knight, there is no age limit to enter the maze and the trip can be a short journey or a long adventure depending on
the path chosen.
“Our maze opens in September and will continue until Halloween,” he said. “We are also making preparations for our Santa on the Ranch Christmas event in December.”
Complete with cookies, cocoa, chili, and giveaways, children will have the opportunity to relate their wish-lists to jolly Ol’ St. Nick as they enjoy crafts, refreshments and fellowship.

Legend RESTORING A
Buford Pusser Office & Jail becomes historical destination
BY JACQUELYN KIMPEL
Buford Pusser is known worldwide for his crackdown on various illegal activities that took place in McNairy County.
From breaking up illegal stills to taking on the mob, Pusser is credited for arresting 7,500 plus criminals in one year alone. Though cleaning up the streets made him a walking target for the State Line Mob, Pusser successfully survived 15 assassination attempts.
The target on his life also put his family in danger. In August 1967, his wife Pauline was killed in an ambush meant for Pusser.
MCNAIRY MAGAZINE 13

After his wife’s death, Pusser hunted the State-Line Mob with renewed determination and did not stop until he had successfully dismantled it entirely.
During his time as sheriff, Pusser inspired the Walking Tall movies becoming known across the globe as the sheriff who brought justice to a small town.
Now the jail where Buford Pusser tirelessly worked during his 6-year tenure, is being restored as a historical destination.
The 69-year-old building and county courthouse was active as sheriff headquarters from 1948 to 1994. It was also an operational jail.
Restoration began on July 31, 2017 through a $50,000 Tourism Enhancement Grant from Tennessee Economic and Community Development and the State of Tennessee.
Jessica Huff, McNairy County tourism director, says the majority of visitors go to the Buford Pusser Home and Museum in Adamsville. Now they will be able to tour the place where he worked.
“It’s amazing, the look on their faces, it’s like us going to Disneyland. We just don’t think about it like that but to everyone
else, the closest thing they’ve seen is the movies. They can’t even believe this man was real,” said Huff.
Dwana Pusser Garrison, the only child of Buford and Pauline, said the Pusser family is honored and humbled by the restoration.
“We’re just grateful that the folks of McNairy County see the historical and tourism value of it,” she said.
“What we’re doing in Adamsville is huge and I just hope [the office/jail restoration] brings even more people into West Tennessee and McNairy County.”
Visitors will begin the tour in the basement of the courthouse, view the office of Buford Pusser, and end in the jail. Along the tour, visitors will be able to see the writings and names of former prisoners and employees etched into the walls of the jail.
Tina Mullis, Buford Pusser Home and Museum curator, said there are no current plans to display any of Buford Pusser’s personal items at the jail, but she would not be opposed to it.
The jail itself will not be fully renovated. It will be cleaned to help preserve the history after years of neglect, though.
New aspects included
in the restoration are timeline displays extended throughout the hallways, floor to ceiling photos in the elevators and new televisions for viewing the movies Pusser inspired. Huff also hopes to include a video of an original interview with Pusser which was the first inspiration for the Walking Tall movies.
One of the goals for the restoration is to not only drive tourism in Selmer, but to the whole county. Huff says restoring the jail will boost tourism within the community and instill a sense of community pride. Restoration is expected to conclude by the end of 2017.
Admission to the Buford Pusser Home and Museum is $8.00 for adults; $5.00 for seniors, military, and law enforcement; and $3.00 for children ages 7-17. Admission for the jail tour is free as visitors will enjoy a self-guided tour.
(ThetourofBufordPusser’sOffice & Jail begins in the basement of the McNairy Co. Courthouse at 170 W. Court Ave., Selmer. For more information, call the McNairy Co. Chamber at 731645-6360.)

LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL PLANETARIUM RESTORATION TO PROMOTE S.T.E.A.M. EDUCATION
BY JACQUELYN KIMPEL
1969, known as the year space exploration commenced, is also the year McNairy County installed a state of the art planetarium at McNairy Central High School.
When America first stepped foot on the moon and began its journey into the unknown, McNairy County opened an innovative ninemeter planetarium. It was a way to not only educate the students of McNairy County, but the citizens as well.
After nearly 30 years of use, the projector once used as the method of viewing the different radiant constellations of our galaxy, was left unrepairable and unused.
It was not, however, completely forgotten. Today, after approximately 20 years of neglect, the once loved planetarium will be restored. What started as one senior project, a graduation requirement of McNairy Central High School, to restore the beloved planetarium, has now escalated into a three year development undertaken by seniors of three different consecutive classes
The project was first presented by Allie Ray, a 2016 graduate of McNairy Central, who raised over $15,000 through community efforts and online fundraising. The money restored the ceiling dome and doors, locks,
MCNAIRY MAGAZINE 19
signage, flooring, lighting, and provided a fresh coat of paint.
For years the planetarium was used for storage, but is now restored into a fully functional classroom. The next step is to restore the projector.
Though the original projector used in 1969 is still in the building, the repair costs are the same as new equipment.
“We’re starting off fresh. The amount that it would cost to repair the original projector would be just as much to buy a whole new digital projector. I’m hoping that one day we’ll be able to get a display case and display [the original projector],” said Sarah Allison, McNairy Central science teacher and lead instructor of the project.
The original projector was stored under the floor of the classroom and an elevator would lift it out from beneath. Throughout the years of neglect, the elevator shaft became used for storage. But a new digital projector will be small enough
making the elevator unnecessary. Although a lot of money has been raised through senior projects, McNairy County received a $50,000 Asset Enhancement Grant from Tennessee Economic & Community Development and the State of Tennessee. The grant will pay for a new projector and seating.
“Everything is expected to be completed by the end of the year. Whether it’s just a nice projector and some folding chairs, something will be up and going by December,” stated Allison.
Allison and Layla Brothers, the third senior to help with the restoration, recently visited Carbondale, Ill. to witness the total solar eclipse on August 21, 2017 using the event to promote the planetarium restoration and gathering donations from scientists there to witness the astronomical event.
“We passed out a bunch of fliers, so we’ll have to wait
and see if we get any donations in response to that,” stated Brothers.
When asked why it’s important for the planetarium to be restored, Allison responded, “While we have a strong STEM program here at McNairy Central, we don’t really have any astronomy programs. It’s a disservice for us to have the facility and not utilize it. It would round out our STEM program.”
Brothers said about the completion of the planetarium, “I’m excited to see it working. I think it would be really cool to see it up and running. I know I’m graduating this year, but I’ve always been really interested in astronomy and never really had a way to access that. Now, future students will be able to have that access.”
If you would like to donate to the project, search MCHS Bobcat Planetarium Restoration at GoFundMe.com to donate.
The project is expected to conclude by the end of 2017.
(The planetarium is located at McNairy Central High School at 493 High School Rd., Selmer, TN)

Big Hill Pond adds kayak and canoe rentals to its list of services thanks to adult leadership class.
BY KIMBERLY SHELTON
A new program is causing quite a splash in McNairy County! Offering panoramic views of the local treasure that is Big Hill Pond State Park, the new kayak and canoe program encourages guests to explore the area via water.
Since its implementation this past June, dozens of adventurers have paddled out into the Travis McNatt Lake to bask in the breathtaking views of the park.

Teeming with bass, catfish and bream, the 165-acre springfed lake is ideal for beginners as well as avid sportsman.
“We are overjoyed at the response we’ve received,” said Katie Weatherford who serves as the Director of the McNairy County Chamber. “It has been a huge success.”
The project, sponsored by the Chamber was decided upon by the 2017 Adult Leadership Class, according to Weatherford.
“Each year, our Adult Leadership Class is asked to complete a special project which they must fund,” she explained. “The nine adult leaders sat down for a brainstorming session to decide what they wanted their project to be. Painting a mural on top of a building and other beautification ideas were tossed around, but the group ultimately decided to host a trail run at Big Hill Pond State Park.”
The nine adult leaders in
this year’s class were Shawn McCombs, Bryan Huff, Jacob Weatherford, Kirk Hamlin, Janiece Rowland, Tammy Harbin, Robbie Harris, Hollie Knight and Schancey Chapman.
“Everyone chipped in and did an outstanding job,” said Weatherford.
Held on April 15, the first annual Big Hill Trail Run 5K helped fund the purchase of kayaks and canoes for the park.
Organizers say the turnout for the run was tremendous and they could not have asked for better support from the community. In fact, just as many matching funds were received from sponsors as there were from the racers, according to Weatherford.
Popular among locals and out-of-towners, especially those who are camping, the new addition is making waves in the area.
“The run was so successful
that we are going to make it an annual event,” said BHP Park Manager Jim Harrison.
“Our Facebook page has blown up since we added canoeing and kayaking,” he continued. “So far, our park has brought in $1,800 through rentals.”
As per the rules, there is no age requirement to enjoy water recreation, but participants must be able to hold a paddle up on their own weight in order to canoe and kayak.
The cost to get out on the water is just $7 per person, per hour for kayakers and $10 per person, per hour for canoers. Life jackets and paddles are included in the price.
“Our canoes and kayaks are rented only by the hour on Saturdays and Sundays,” said BHP Park Ranger Justin King. “Monday-Friday we do half-day, full-day and week-long rentals only.”

“They can be rented from now until Labor Day (Sept. 4),” he added.
Depending on the weather, Harrison says he’d like to extend rentals into early November to take advantage of the beautiful fall foliage.
“We will wait and see what happens,” he said.
Those who plan on renting during the week must call ahead and make a reservation with the Park Office.
Rental hours are from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the weekends with all boats off the water by 5 p.m. and from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekly with all boats off the water by 4 p.m. Participants will meet at the Travis McNatt Lake Boat House on weekends or the Park Office during the week.
In addition to kayaking and canoeing which will now be available annually, the park has other exciting news to share about its 35-acre namesake.
“Due to the new program, the state has taken a lot more attention lately and an effort is now under way to make access to the original Big Hill Pond which currently has a gravel road leading up to it,” said Harrison. “Our commissioner Brock Hill came out for a visit and was so impressed by it that he wanted others to be able to better enjoy it as well.”
Constructed by accident in 1853, Old Big Hill Pond is a cypress lined pond. It was created (mostly by slave labor)
during levy construction for the Memphis Charleston Railroad when soil was scooped from a borrow pit to build a levy across the Tuscumbia and Cypress Creek bottoms.
“We hope to be able to build either a floating or connecting boardwalk across it,” said Harrison.
(Big Hill Pond State Park is located at 1435 John Howell Road in Pocahontas. For more information, call 731-645-7967 or visit www.bighilltrailrun.com.)

#SHOPMCNAIRY
Support Local
If we wanted to live somewhere that looked like everywhere else, we wouldn’t be living in McNairy County.
BY KATIE WEATHERFORD
The #ShopMcNairy initiative began in July 2016 as a photo contest encouraging locals to support McNairy County business by posting a photo on social media while shopping local. McNairy Countians have participated in various #ShopMcNairy contests and events since the hashtag stepped onto the social media scene.
An annual #ShopMcNairy Fashion Show was created as a result of the campaign’s success. The event featured local boutiques and salons to a sold out crowd in November 2016. The show acted as a preview for Small Business Saturday merchandise. The 2017 Fashion Show will take place on November 13 at the Latta Theater.
The Chamber encourages you to #ShopMcNairy every chance you get, not just during the holiday season. Put your money where your heart is.
