Today we are sitting in the arena named for McMurry coaching legend Hershel Kimbrell ’50, who passed away on Thursday, May 2, 2024, at 97. From 1959 to 1990, he led the men’s basketball team to nine Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association (TIAA) titles, 16 postseason playoffs, and competed in the NAIA national tournament in 1962. In 1987, he won his 400th game as a college coach, retired in 1990 with 448 wins, and continues to be recognized as the longest-running and winningest men’s basketball coach.
Kimbrell’s contributions to McMurry University have been recognized and celebrated for decades. In 1984, he became a McMurry Athletic Hall of Honor charter member and was inducted into the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame the following year. The Hershel and Georgia Kimbrell Scholarship, established in 1987, is a legacy to his impact on countless McMurry students. In 1995, McMurry University honored him as the Distinguished Alumni and named the Kimbrell Arena in his honor. In 2023, he was recognized as one of the McMurry 100, a prestigious list naming the most influential people in McMurry’s 100-year history. His legacy lives on through his family and the countless lives he touched during his coaching career.
Processional and Recessional Guidelines:
McMurry University asks that you read and be mindful of a few guidelines in order for the commencement ceremony to be safe and respectful at all times:
• At the end of the ceremony during the Recessional, please rise, remain standing, and wait until the graduates and faculty have exited. Wait to exit once all graduates, faculty, and the stage party have exited, and please do not block the exit.
• Please follow all staff instructions and posted signs at all times.
Photography:
You are respectfully asked to remain in the seating area while taking any personal photographs. Graduate photos will be available online the week of May 20. A link to the photos may be found on mcm.edu.
Academic Honors Designations:
† Member of the James Winford Hunt Chapter of Alpha Chi National Honor Society.
Honors listed in the program are computed through the end of the previous semester. At the time of graduation, a student is designated for honors based on the following cumulative grade point average: Summa Cum Laude -- 3.85-4.0; Magna Cum Laude -- 3.7-3.84; Cum Laude --3.5-3.69. To be eligible for graduation with academic honors, a student must have completed a minimum of 57 semester hours in resident courses at McMurry University.
University Honors Program graduates have fulfilled all requirements for Departmental Honors, maintained a grade point average of at least 3.5, and completed several honors classes in other areas of the university curriculum.
Departmental Honors graduates have completed a senior thesis in an academic discipline, usually the student’s major field, with the endorsement of the faculty members of that department, and maintained a grade point average of at least 3.25.
This program contains the names of degree and honors for May and August 2024 candidates for graduation based on information available at time of printing. Inclusion of candidates in the program is not confirmation of completion of degree or honors designation.
Academic regalia derive from two garments, a type of robe and a hood or head covering worn in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Since the clergy composed the majority of the educated class, academic dress is an adaptation of the cape that was worn for warmth in unheated buildings and religious processions.
Through the years, great diversity in color and style of cap, gown, and hood developed until 1895, when an intercollegiate code was adopted in the United States to encourage standard designs and usage. An academic costume consists of three items: the gown, the hood, and the Oxford cap or mortar board. Their sleeves easily distinguish gowns. The bachelor’s gown has long pointed sleeves. The sleeves of a master’s gown are oblong panels reaching nearly to the hem of the gown. A doctor’s gown has full and bell-shaped sleeves, which carry three horizontal bars; it also has a velvet panel extending around the neck and down from the front of the hem. The velvet trim is usually black but may be of the color associated with the degree.
Hoods for the master’s and doctor’s regalia are similar. The former are shorter and trimmed with a narrower velvet band. The color of the trim of a hood identifies the wearer’s degree: brown for fine arts, dark blue for philosophy, buff for business, golden yellow for science, light blue for education, orange for engineering, pink for music, apricot for nursing, white for arts and letters, and scarlet for theology. The color of the hood lining identifies the institution that conferred the degree.
The Oxford cap, commonly called the mortar board, is black and has a long tassel fastened by a button on the top. Doctors wear a gold tassel.
Once a familiar weapon in medieval combat, the mace evolved into a symbol of rulership and became associated with the pride of a nation and its origins. Later, the mace was adopted by universities as a symbol of the power of the academic quest for truth and wisdom.
The mace that leads the procession is a symbol of McMurry’s rich history. The base of the wooden staff holds bands signifying each president of the university. In the center of the staff lies an inlaid eagle feather, symbolizing strength and purpose.
The globe of the mace captures the essence of the university. The Zuni bowl represents the Native American heritage of Dr. J.W. Hunt, McMurry’s founding father, who lived on the Kaw Indian Reservation as a child. At the crest of the globe is the United Methodist cross and flame, symbolic of our strong ties and heritage within the United Methodist Church.
The mace was designed and cast by Terry Gilbreth, sculptor, and a 1968 graduate of McMurry University
The Presidential medallion consists of the McMurry University seal displaying the founding date of 1923 in maroon. Dr. Harper’s starting date as president of McMurry University, October 1, 2013, is engraved on the reverse side.
Cords are symbolic of a student’s achievements throughout their academic career. They allow the audience to visually recognize graduates who have completed an academic honor, those who have participated in certain academic societies or clubs, or graduating from a particular school or department within the institution that grants graduation cords as keepsakes for that degree program. Cords obtained by our students include:

As a dedicated member of the McMurry Board of Trustees, serving from 1998 to 2007 and from 2012 to 2019, Graham was honored as trustee emerita in 2021. During the Centennial, she was named to the McMurry 100 as an individual whose support has greatly impacted the university in its first 100 years.
Her philanthropic support extends across campus. Graham was the lead donor in establishing the Walter F. and Virginia Johnson School of Business. She has been a significant donor to the reimagined Garrison United Methodist Campus Center, which opened in 2024 and a steadfast supporter of the Women’s Leadership Luncheon. In 2016, she was awarded the prestigious John Wesley Award for her outstanding philanthropic support of McMurry.
Her presence at McMurry athletics events, particularly football and women’s and men’s basketball, is a testament to her ongoing support and love for the university. A loyal fan, supporter, and donor to athletics, Graham was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Honor in 2017 as the recipient of the Bob and Clara Brown Award.
To support Hispanic students attending McMurry, she established the Sara Hernandez Hudman Graham Endowed Scholarship and the Reverend Richard and Sarah Herrera Hernandez Endowed Scholarship in honor of her parents. To kick off Hispanic Heritage Month in 2023, Graham sponsored an exhibit and presentation, “A Tejano Son of Texas,” showcasing the legacy of Polly Rodriguez: gunsmith, surveyor, Texas ranger, and Methodist minister.
Sara is an active member of the McMurry Board of Visitors and works as one of the university’s best recruiters by sending her children and grandchildren to the university. Her grandson plans to be a member of the incoming freshman class in 2024.
Born in 1939 in Ranger, Texas, the son of a mechanic and a domestic worker, Baker lived in a mixed neighborhood of Mexican Americans, poor whites, and African Americans. Baker attended a one-room, all-black school called Slaughter Ward Elementary up to 6th grade. From 6th to 10th grade, Baker had to be bused to Eastland, where education ended for African Americans before they could obtain a high school Diploma. Thus, when the Brown v. Board dissension came in, his parents simply signed him up for classes in the white Ranger High School. Baker was allowed to attend as long as he did not socialize with the white high school female students or attend the school’s social events. He graduated as the school’s first African American graduate in 1957. Baker then graduated from Cisco College (A.A. 1959), McMurry University (B.A. in Biology 1963), Harvard University (M.Ed. 1970), The Ohio State University (Ph.D. in clinical psychology 1976).
Baker has worked for the Peace Corps, public schools in Los Angeles, California and other cities, and has taught at McMurry University as a professor of psychology and taught from 1983 to 1994. He was the first African American to graduate with an undergraduate degree from McMurry. Baker was named a Distinguished Alumni in 1987. He currently serves on the McMurry Board of Visitors. Baker joined the Community Action Program in 2006 and served as executive director for six years. After announcing his retirement from CAP, the then Board President Sandy Bowen said, “Baker has made several changes for the good during his tenure. The caliber of programs, performance of the programs has improved. He’s always interested in employee development, making sure they have the training required.” Baker has a consistent and generous history of giving to the University.
