WHO WE ARE, WHAT WE DO The McLean Community Center (MCC) was built and is funded by residents of Greater McLean for their use through a real estate tax surcharge, the result of a 1970 bond referendum (Small District 1A-Dranesville).

Center facilities include the 383-seat Alden Theatre, the McLean Project for the Arts galleries, the Susan B. DuVal Art Studio, meeting and conference rooms, a rehearsal studio, a multipurpose classroom and catering kitchen.

Local open clubs and organizations use the Center for their monthly meetings with a nominal charge.

Center facilities may be rented for private functions such as business conferences, receptions, parties and recitals. District residents and businesses pay reduced fees.

Registrations for McLean Youth Athletics and McLean Little League activities are regularly held at the Center, and information on their activities is always available.

The Center also operates the award-winning Old Firehouse Center, located at 1440 Chain Bridge Rd. in downtown McLean.

Here’s to a New Year Full of New Opportunities As we approach 2020, MCC has a variety of exciting programs in the works.

A reimagined Be Fit McLean returns to MCC in January for the first time since 2013. Just in time to help with those new year’s resolutions, this new event focuses on providing information on all aspects of well-being and features several health-enhancing activities to help you on your journey to better health.

Our annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration is a little different this year. Instead of holding the event on the Sunday before the holiday, it will be held on Thursday, Jan. 30, at 7 p.m. We are excited to welcome award-winning pianist, composer, producer and arts educator Damien Sneed to The Alden, and his “We Shall Overcome” show is a fitting and moving tribute to MLK that you do not want to miss.

Is it your turn to serve? Our 2020 Governing Board Election also begins in January. Running for a seat on our Governing Board will provide you with a unique opportunity to contribute to MCC’s current and future successes.

There are three adult and two teen positions available this year. See page 3 for more detailed information.

If you are not able to commit to service on our Governing Board, please take advantage of another opportunity to contribute to the Center’s future.

The Governing Board’s Public Hearing on FY22 Programs is Wednesday, March 25, at 7:30 p.m. and we want to hear from you! Come to the meeting, write to me by email or dial in to participate in this important meeting. Your opinions are welcomed and needed for us to continue to serve MCC district residents with relevance and accuracy.

As I write this letter in mid-October, we have just started to experience colder temperatures in the area. Forecasters are predicting a colder, snowier winter than last year, but I am holding out hope that their forecasts are wrong. If you are unsure if an activity will be held due to the weather, please visit our website to review our inclement weather policy. Is it Your Turn to Serve?

MCC Governing Board Election Begins in January The McLean Community Center, an agency of Fairfax County Government, is looking for district residents to serve on its Governing Board. The all volunteer Board sets policy, approves budgets and provides general oversight of Center programs and facilities. Board members have a unique opportunity to improve the quality of life for district residents.

Openings: Three adult board seats and two youth board seats.

Term of Office: Three years for adults and one year for youth.

Eligibility: All candidates must be residents of the Center’s tax district (Small District 1A-Dranesville). One youth candidate from the area served by McLean High School will be elected and one youth candidate from the area served by Langley High School will be elected.

Youth candidates need not attend these schools but must run for the seat representing the area where they live.

Petitions: Each candidate must obtain ten (10) signatures of endorsement from district residents and submit information about his or her candidacy for publication. For a youth candidate, the ten (10) required signatures must also be from youths living in her or his high school area. Petition forms will be available at MCC starting on Tuesday, Jan. 21.

Deadline: Petitions must be filed at MCC no later than 5 p.m., on Friday, March 13.

Election: The MCC election is nonpartisan. Residents of the Center’s tax district may vote for Board members on McLean Day, Saturday, May 16, from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Lewinsville Park, or by absentee ballot from Wednesday, March 18, through Wednesday, May 13.

Adults vote for adult candidates only, and youths vote for youth candidates only.

FY2021 Budget Goes to Fairfax County The McLean Community Center’s proposed budget for fiscal year 2021 (which runs July 1, 2020–June 30, 2021), was approved by the MCC Governing Board at its meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 23. The tax rate to support the Center was maintained at 2.3 cents per $100 of assessed real estate value. Now, the County Board of Supervisors will consider the Center’s budget, with a projected final approval happening in April. MCC Receives Two Virginia Recreation and Park Society Awards McLean Community Center (MCC) received two awards at the Virginia Recreation and Park Society’s 64th Annual Conference “Growing to New Heights,” which was held in Tysons Corner, Sept. 7-10. More than 500 delegates from around the state gathered to learn, exchange ideas and discuss areas of common interest to recreation and park professionals.

The McLean Community Center Governing Board wants to hear from you. The board is holding a Public Hearing on MCC Programs at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 25, at the center. The Governing Board’s regularly scheduled monthly meeting will follow the public hearing.

Residents of Small District 1A-Dranesville, the Center’s tax district, are encouraged to attend the hearing to voice their opinions on current offerings at the Center and to make suggestions for future programs. The hearing is the first step in planning for the FY 2022 budget cycle, which begins July 1, 2021. The Center is home to the Robert Ames Alden Theatre and includes the Old Firehouse Teen Center.

An MCC Staffer in the Spotlight Andrew Jennings, Instructional Program Manager

With his abundant energy, enthusiasm and infectious smile always in evidence, ask Andrew Jennings about his job and he’ll say, “The best part of my job is having the opportunity to work within the McLean community, where our hard work is recognized and appreciated.” And he’ll sincerely mean it. “MCC is engrained into the fabric of this community, which make the work we do enjoyable,” he’ll add.

As the instructional program manager, Jennings plans, organizes and administers the adult, children and senior class programs at MCC. He works with Fairfax County to maintain an active request for proposals to vet new instructors and to expand the class program offerings at MCC. In the last year, the center has added several new classes, including dog obedience, qigong and tai chi, and STEM-based robotics and coding. He also supervises the Youth Events staff that is responsible for producing Harvest Happenings, Breakfast with Santa and Spring Fest, among other annual events.

Jennings holds an associate degree in Parks and Recreation from Northern Virginia Community College and a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and Project Management from Liberty University. He joined MCC in 2008 and for 12 years has worked to provide a multitude of opportunities to allow patrons to pursue their interests and learn something new. “I have been fortunate enough to meet many great people in my time here,” he said. “The surreal part is that I am now seeing kids who I remember being in our little tots class driving around town and heading off to college—the time really flew by.”

An outdoor enthusiast, Jennings and his wife Rachel (a former MCC staffer) can often be found hiking local trails. They have even leash-trained their cat, Mercy, who accompanies them on mountain trails—to the amazed delight of other hikers. An avid fly fisherman, Jennings teaches classes and spends his weekends fishing local waterways. “I fly fish mostly in Virginia, but I have driven as far as Idaho to fish the Snake River for cutthroat trout and to Michigan to target smallmouth bass in Lake Michigan.”

Instructor Spotlight Quentin Levin, Technology Instructor

At 21, Quentin MacClean Levin (yes, that’s really his middle name) may be the youngest instructor to have created, and then taught, a class at MCC. His popular Technology Tutoring Workshops teach seniors how to connect with the ever-changing world of technology. “The best part of every class is the look on a participant’s face when he or she is able to FaceTime with a faraway relative for the first time,” he said.

Starting in 2015, while still in high school, Levin served as a youth member of the MCC Governing Board representing students in the Langley High School boundary area. He was the first teen board member to be elected as an officer and member of the Executive Committee. Now a political science major in college, he’s interned at the U.S. House of Representatives and the BBC and he volunteers for D.C. Special Olympics.

After serving two terms on the MCC Board, he established the workshop because he wanted to stay involved in the community while in college. “MCC’s programming provides equal opportunities for everyone in our community to explore their passions, pursue their interests and strengthen the bonds that unite us.”

While caring for his aging grandfather, Levin discovered that physical mobility was not the only factor that could limit a person’s opportunities. “I realized technology is increasingly a barrier to equal access. The growing digital-skills gap hampers socioeconomic mobility, makes it harder to stay connected with distant relatives and complicates our daily lives,” he said. “Our workshop aims to ameliorate this gap by empowering seniors with key technological skills in a collaborative and fun environment.”

The Business of Sports

Learn how investors make (and lose) money in the stock market and how you can start investing successfully at a young age! In this hands-on class, students use a cool stock trading simulation tool with real-time market data to select a $10,000 stock portfolio and analyze performance over time, “learning by doing.” Topics include stocks and bonds, stock price graphs, risk, return and diversification, mutual funds, rate of return and case studies. A solid foundation for successful future investors.

For the sports lover, future team General Manager (GM), sports team owner, ESPN analyst or coach, this unique class will “show you the money” in sports! Students will learn the business side of various professional sports and actively discuss and analyze a different “sports money” topic at every class. Kids’ Winter Comfort Food Potatoes are delicious in the winter. Mashed, baked, sliced, creamy and cheesy! Kids also will create pasta dough (by hand and machine), which can be the base for endless variations and shapes—both flat noodles and macaroni.

Young dancers will enjoy dancing to their favorite cherished tunes from fairytales such as “Cinderella,” “Sleeping Beauty” and “Beauty and The Beast,” among others. Hip-Hop Kids (OFC)

This musical theatre dance class combines jazz techniques and introduces students to a Broadway style of dance. It focuses on beginner jazz warm-ups, center floor work, progressions, kicks, leaps, turns, splits and isolations. Your child will be a dancing Broadway star on Parent Watch Day! Dog Solve was started by police and military K-9 instructors to offer the best in dog obedience training methods to the general public. Our courses not only provide training in general obedience, but unlike other training programs, we offer real life situational training drills that put a realism in your day-to-day interaction with your dog. It is our philosophy that the student should choose their style of training methods, rather than the usual “one style fits all.” We address behavior problems, handling skills and tasks that you will not obtain in our competitor’s courses. Advanced Dog Obedience This course is offered to all dogs and their owners who have previously attended and completed a basic (introductory) dog obedience course. Topics of instruction will cover heeling off leash, extended stay commands, recalls under distraction, down in motion and advanced “situational” training.

No previous training needed. Known as the “physical game of chess,” Olympic sport fencing provides a tremendous physical and mental workout for students of all ages and athletic abilities. As one of the safest sports, fencing makes fitness fun! It builds muscle strength, provides greater cardiovascular workouts, endurance, coordination and speed. Learn the fundamentals: footwork, handwork and strategy using safety-tipped swords, protective jackets, masks and gloves. A registration form must be completed and signed by a parent/guardian.

Technical Theater Training Program For ages 14 and older. Technical training introduces students to many aspects of technical production, including safety issues, and is designed to assist local arts organizations with their productions. Volunteers who work in the Alden Theatre in a technical capacity are required to complete this training course, but these classes are open to anyone older than 14 years old.

Participants may sign up for one or all sessions. Please wear comfortable clothes that do not restrict movement and loafers or closed-toe shoes with laces or Velcro.

Stemtree offers K-12 science and engineering education programs. Our one-on-one learning environment enables students of all abilities to become confident, capable learners and allows quality individualized interaction between the instructor and the student. The program utilizes instructional time, assessments and hands-on activities to reinforce key concepts and develop science and engineering skills. Stemtree curriculum goes beyond STEM activities. All facets of our life are affected by engineering— mechanical, civil, software—just to name a few. To be successful in the field of engineering, creative, problem-solving abilities are a must. Stemtree Engineering Workouts use the wonder and genius of robots to inspire students to learn engineering, apply their knowledge and skills of basic science, model construction, computer programming and problem solving to explore STEM concepts. This is both a perfect introduction to the world of robotics for younger students and an opportunity to expand the knowledge base of older students.

Students do not need previous computer programming experience. Today, most children use computers and manipulate media, but few of them know how to create the media or software. This class will teach students how to create and develop computer programs (games, stories, etc.) instead of just playing with them. Students will learn computer programming concepts in a fun and interactive way while sharing their own interactive stories, animations, games, music and art. Students will have an opportunity to think creatively, communicate clearly, use technology fluently and collaborate effectively. They will also create their own computer programs to implement computer games and combine multiple topics (science, engineering, teamwork).

Drawing I

The class is designed to develop a stronger understanding of the elements that unify a finished picture while sharpening the students' visual communication skills. Vibrant Flower Paintings in Oil For all levels! Capture the beauty of flowers with new techniques! In this class, we will learn how to capture the quality, the feeling and the spirit of flowers while exposing you to new techniques for painting large flowers in oil. You will learn the essential techniques such as: composition and framing in drawing; under painting and contrast; and how to add textures, highlights, shadows and details that make your flowers more vibrant.

Decorative Lettering For all skill levels. Learn how to use the art of decorative writing on journal pages, cards, envelopes, invitations, recipe cards (and anything that you can think of) to make them personalized and special. You will learn how to draw altered block letters, building script letters, botanical borders, illuminated initials, vines and flourishes. During these classes, you will also learn watercolor techniques including graded washes, wet into wet and color mixing.

CLASSES FOR ADULTS

Writing: Fine Tuning Previous writing instruction is strongly recommended.

Writers of fiction, nonfiction (including memoir), or poetry are all welcome. Critiquing the work of others is fine training for critiquing your own work and, of course, having the input of other readers is invaluable. Whatever your genre, other writers will bring their own experiences and preferences to the table. Each session will deal with critique of work submitted by three attendees (up to 10 pages each). Work will be emailed by its author to each class member and the instructor prior to meeting. There will be brief teaching moments if the instructor sees an issue that should be addressed, and critique guidance will be provided. Marked-up copies will be given to the authors at the end of their reviews.

Characters bear the burden of your story, and those characters live in the world you create for them. Your readers must feel they can see and hear those characters as they move through their world—an environment that must seem three-dimensional and full of sensory detail.

McLEAN TRAVELER 2020 Philadelphia Flower Show

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania • Monday, March 2 The 2020 Philadelphia Flower Show invites you to fall in love with the Italian Riviera with their “Riviera Holiday” Show. Since 1829, people have been making the journey to Philadelphia to see the nation’s largest and longest-running horticultural event. Inspired by the wildly exotic gardens of the Mediterranean, the lush landscapes will be filled with fragrant waves of citrus, lavender, geraniums, roses, rosemary and sage. There will be hundreds of displays by the world’s premier floral and landscape designers.

As in years past, garden shoppers will be thrilled with the more than 180 vendors selling everything from garden furniture to unique plants and flowers. Horticultural, artistic and culinary lectures and demonstrations by world-class experts are mostly free to show visitors.

Lunch will be on your own. Sample the plentiful food vendors at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, where the show is held, or go across the street to the Historic Reading Terminal Market. There, the selections will range from Philly Cheese Steaks to home-baked Amish goodies.

Plan now to visit the 2020 Philadelphia Flower Show and imagine the warm, fragrant Italian Riviera. It will be both breathtaking and inspiring.

Hampton Historic Site and Ladew Topiary Gardens

April is the perfect month to visit Ladew Topiary Gardens as the colors should be outstanding and the topiary spectacular!

The mansion of Hampton National Historic Site is one of the most decorative post-Revolutionary homes in America. This grand home is a perfect example of late-Georgian architecture in America. When it was finished in 1790, it was thought to be the largest private home in the United States. Charles Ridgely was able to build his house through the discovery of iron ore on his land that then provided cannon and munitions to the Revolutionary cause. The mansion includes the outstanding furnishings of the Ridgely family. It was acquired by the National Trust in 1948 when the last Ridgely passed away.

Our next stop is Ladew Topiary Gardens. The Garden Club of America has described it as “the most outstanding topiary garden in America.” The gardens were the idea of Harvey S. Ladew who started creating them in the 1930s and was inspired by the many fox hunts Ladew enjoyed in England. With the help of local farmers, he was able to take wasted crop and livestock fields and turn them into these exquisite topiary gardens. The old farmhouse was the next project and Ladew did this in stages. It contains an outstanding collection of English antiques.

Each spring, McLean Project for the Arts hosts two student art shows highlighting the work of talented students from Fairfax County Public Schools in the McLean and Langley Pyramids.

McLean Project for the Arts (MPA) is a nonprofit organization that presents the visual arts program for the community at the McLean Community Center (MCC), thanks to a public/private partnership with MCC and Fairfax County.

MPA presents exhibitions of contemporary art and provides education in the visual arts through a program of classes for children and adults, as well as lectures, tours and ArtReach, an outreach program that brings school children and other groups to the gallery for educational programs. Master Artist Kofi Dennis will lead the group through intermediate-level drumming skills, culminating in a group drum circle. The 2020 James C. Macdonald Performing Arts Scholarship Competition Annually, the McLean Community Center recognizes the hard work and talent of young performing artists through the James C. Macdonald Performing Arts Scholarship Competition. Following a preliminary round and final round of competition, three prizes (1st $1,200; 2nd $800; 3rd $400) are awarded in each of four categories: dance, theater, instrumental music and vocal music.

• High school students who reside in the MCC tax district (Small District 1A-Dranesville) are eligible to apply.

• Application forms and information about the preliminary round will be available online at www.aldentheatre.org.

• Students may enter in more than one category but must submit an application form for each.

• A nonrefundable, $20 fee is required for each application form submitted.

Teens can enjoy their time at the Old Firehouse after school, during school breaks and at our Friday night activities and trips.

Mail a completed registration form with payment in the form of a check, money order or credit card to: McLean Community Center, Attn: Registrar, 1234 Ingleside Ave., McLean, VA 22101.

IN PERSON/DROP OFF

You may register in person at the Center from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. At other times, drop a completed registration form and payment (in the form of a check or money order, or by completing the credit card information on the form) into the registration box.

Registration Begins

• Registration begins on Monday, Nov. 4. All mail-in and drop-off registration forms received before the designated registration date will be processed on the designated date.

• Instructors may not accept registrations or extend verbal commitments.

• All withdrawals, refund and cancellation requests must be submitted in writing to registrar@mcleancenter.org.

• Patrons who submit refund requests 14 days or more before the start date of a class or activity, will be granted a refund. Refunds requested less than 14 days before the start date of the class or activity will not be granted.

MCC Fee Waivers

• MCC offers fee waivers to qualified tax district residents requesting to participate in programs or services at a reduced rate or at no cost. For more information on how to apply for a fee waiver, contact the MCC Registrar at 703-744-9365, TTY: 711, or by email at registrar@mcleancenter.org.
