For children ages 3-4 years old Camp participants must be toilet-trained and have turned 3 years old by June 1, 2022. Each session will have one in-house entertainment event and one to two days of water play per week. Campers will participate in arts and crafts, outdoor play, story time, singing, dancing, small group games and more. Campers always remain on site. The campers-to-staff ratio is one adult to six campers. Maximum enrollment is limited to 18 campers per session.

registrar@mcleancenter.org ★ The center will issue a full refund when a camp program is canceled by the center. ★ Requests for withdrawals and/or cancellations received before Friday, April 1, 2022, will receive a full refund. ★ For requests for withdrawals and/or cancellations after Friday, April 1, 2022, patrons will be charged a $100 processing fee, which will be deducted from the total amount paid. ★ If a replacement can be found to fill the space vacated by the cancellation and/or withdrawal, the $100 processing fee will be refunded to the patron. ★ If a replacement cannot be found, a refund of the processing fee will not be issued.

Please Note: All forms must be completed and on hand at camp before your child will be admitted to camp. No exceptions will be made. Required Forms Include: Documents and forms will be available for download on the Camp McLean webpage.

Examination Form signed by a physician. A copy of the form is acceptable. Any camper under the age of 6 years old must submit a Physical Examination form that is dated after August 3, 2021. In accordance with Virginia law, camp staff members are required to witness a document with proof of your child’s age. You must bring one of the following items in when you register your child for camp. Note: Please do not leave the originals.

Acceptable documents include: 1. A certified copy of his or her birth certificate. 2. A U.S. Passport or State Department-issued documentation. 3. A Virginia-based school report card. How to Register Registration begins on Monday, Feb. 7, 2022. Spaces fill quickly, so please register as soon as possible to ensure your space. Be first in line, register online! Online registration starts at midnight. Go to www.mcleancenter.org and click on the “Register” button or the seven-digit activity code associated with the activity you want. You may also register over the phone (703790-0123) or in person at the center or the Old Firehouse. (703-448-8336). Dig up dinosaurs and the ancient past! Solve real-life mysteries! Kids learn about archaeology and the techniques scientists use to excavate fossils and long-lost cities. They also study bone fragments, pottery shards, amber deposits and fossils to understand what they can tell us about history! The fee is due to the instructor on the first day of camp. This popular series of imaginative art camps for children is based on the learning principles of Jean Piaget. Children create wonderful “masterpieces” using innovative art materials while exploring a variety of artistic styles and techniques. Each half-day camp offers unique experiences designed to foster creativity. Each week of camp will feature a different theme. There are no full-day options for Abrakadoodle camps. Children must be fully toilet trained. Please remember to send a snack and drink each day (no nuts, please). Treasure Hunt! Art Camp Come along with us on this art adventure! We will learn about lost and found treasures. Help us find hidden treasures on islands, in palaces and at many other interesting destinations. Using a variety of art tools, we will create diamonds, lost ships, crowns, pirate portraits and much more! Follow our treasure map to find the FUN!

Week 2: July 5-8

Art Madness Art is everywhere. You can find art while digging in the dirt, looking up at the sky, watching storms and while relaxing at the beach! Everything we’ll make is fun: sunset silhouettes, Aboriginal dot art, beach drawings, sculptures and 3D art. Join us and explore a variety of art techniques while we make connections with science, technology, engineering and math concepts.

Week 3: July 11-15

Ooh Là Là Art Celebrate art that will make everybody say “ooh là là!” You will create with watercolors, modeling compounds, chalk, tempera paints, oil pastels and more while exploring color, designing vertical garden sculptures and building nocturnal animals. Bubbles will pop with drawing chalk! A still life will explode onto paper! And oil pastels will inspire lively molas.

Hooray for “Clay” Roll, pinch, pat, press, paint and sculpt your way through this creative art camp that features various modeling compounds. While in the process of making 3D art, also learn about art from cultures around the world.

Week 5: July 25-29

Abrakadoodle Art in 3D Learn to make 3D art using wire, modeling compounds, paper and more. We’ll mold, bend, twist, stretch and balance while we design each three-dimensional creation. Learn about amazing sculptors while creating 3D artworks of your own that are dynamic, creative and fun!

FAB Art Fun and fabulous is what these artists are all about. Dance into developing spatial awareness while stacking shapes with Antony Gormley’s lively block people. Pablo Picasso’s Blue Period stimulates the imagination and senses with sounds of crumpled paper and paint exploration. Sonia Delaunay’s famous circle painting inspires imaginative printing and shape recognition. Be a FAB artist with these Fun And Beautiful projects!

Week 7: August 8-12

Beach Party Get ready for beach-themed creative fun! Design your own sun visor and create incredible underwater art. Learn about worldfamous sidewalk chalk artist, Julian Beevers. Have fun with spray bottles, sand art, shell designs and more!

2022 Summer Art Camps McLean Project for the Arts 2022 Summer Art Camps will again YEARS offer a variety of imaginative and fun week-long sessions for ages 6-13 that will ignite your child’s creativity! Designed by our professional team of art educators, our integrated curriculum is built around engaging projects encompassing drawing, painting, ceramics and crafts as campers express themselves creatively while developing their knowledge and appreciation of visual arts. Each week’s theme is distinct, thus offering a new experience each session for campers participating in multiple camp weeks, and the opportunity for a sequential exploration of various art principles, techniques and media. Camps will take place in our beautiful Emerson Gallery and DuVal Studio spaces in the McLean Community Center. Both full-day and half-day options are available.

MPA Summer Art Camps

Morning Sessions Morning-Friday, 9 a.m.–noon

Week 1: Magical & Mythical Creatures June 27-July 1

Two sessions: 6-8 years, 9-13 years Do you love stories about dragons, fairies, unicorns and other magical and mythical creatures? We will recreate some of these characters in our own imaginative masterpieces! Campers will use color pencils, markers, paint, beads, feathers, special papers and other materials to construct 2D and 3D artworks starring our favorite characters, from literature or from our imaginations.

July 5-8

$208/$196 MCC district residents Two sessions: 6-8 years, 9-13 years Discover the possibilities of fiber through sculptural and two-dimensional forms. Together campers will survey different forms of fiber elements such as weaving, the craft of friendship bracelets/keychains, tie dying, felt and yarn.

July 11-15

Two sessions: 6-8 years, 9-13 years Art is beyond stagnant processes such as still life. In this camp we will explore the dynamism of art through techniques that focus on motion and fluidity. Campers will engage in projects such as flip books, spin art, art pours and much more.

July 18-22

Two sessions: 6-8 years, 9-13 years Campers will delve into the world of hue, shade, tint, value and intensity. Starting from the “color wheel”, we will draw and drip paint on paper and canvas with colorful layers of paint, oil pastel and collage. We will experiment with different types of 2D printing and use pencil, pen, watercolor, acrylic, tie dye, and mixed media. Learn about exciting artists such as Jackson Pollock and Morris Louis.

Week 5: Hand-Building with Clay July 25-29

Two sessions: 6-8 years, 9-13 years Explore the exciting world of handbuilding with clay. We will also create beautifully decorative patterns with various sculpting tools and stencils and learn a variety of techniques including slab, pinch and coil construction. Campers will take projects home as we are using non-firing clay.

MPA Summer Art Camps

Week 6: Pop Art August 1-5

Two sessions: 6-8 years, 9-13 years Campers will explore works by “pop” artist Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, Claes Oldenburg and other artists of the 1960s and 1970s. Campers will then create their own pop art works using found objects, commercial packaging and other everyday commercial symbols. Discover color and composition working from everyday objects using drawing, painting, and collage techniques.

Week 7: Celestial Art August 8-12

Two sessions: 6-8 years, 9-13 years Explore all things planetary and alien during this week of artistic space travel. We will look closely at some of the beautiful and colorful photographs of space. Deriving inspiration from the planets, stars, galaxies and other celestial bodies, create your own intergalactic masterpieces using new techniques like paper marbling and 3D modeling.

Afternoon Sessions Monday-Friday, 1-4 p.m.

Week 1: Comic Book June 27-July 1

Two sessions: 6-8 years, 9-13 years Delve into the world of comics by making your own books and looking at the work of professional comic book authors. We will learn what works, both from a compositional and storytelling perspective. Campers will look at some of the most famous heroes and villains in comic book history for inspiration. Beginning with pen and ink drawings for our storyboards, you will add sequential and close-up images as part of creating your own exciting comic books.

Week 2: STEAM, Art+Nature July 5-8

Two sessions: 6-8 years, 9-13 years This camp focuses on the interrelations of art with science, technology, engineering and math. Campers explore nature and biological imagery through watercolor, ink and acrylic. Campers take supervised nature walks into McLean Central Park for plein air sketching sessions of flora and fauna. They also collect leaves, flowers and other natural objects to use in their works.

Week 3: Under the Sea

July 11-15

Two sessions: 6-8 years, 9-13 years Come explore the aquatic unknown through a variety of creative forms. In this camp, we’ll dive into nautical themes such as animals, mythos, and nature. Campers will work with watercolors, sand, recyclable materials and more throughout the week.

Week 4: Surrealist July 18-22

Two sessions: 6-8 years, 9-13 years This camp is perfect for campers with large imaginations and creativity, as the surreal art movement is all about creative expression. Students will learn about the Surrealist Movement and look at works by Salvador Dali, Frida Kahlo and other movement pioneers. Campers will create artworks that could only exist in their dreams through 2D and 3D means.

Week 5: Mosaic Art July 25-29

Two sessions: 6-8 years, 9-13 years Stones, tiles and much more! We will explore the art of mosaic, and create awesome geometric designs, and pictures throughout this camp week.

Week 6: Unconventional Creations August 1-5

Two sessions: 6-8 years, 9-13 years Campers will spend this week exploring a wide variety of unique methods in creating works of art. They will have the opportunity to create projects with methods that are different from the usual norm and to be introduced to innovative new methods of creating!

Week 7: Land Before Art August 8-12

Two sessions: 6-8 years, 9-13 years Campers will go far back in time and explore the beginnings of visual art. We’ll discover cave paintings, and learn about prehistoric creatures, while having the opportunity to create our own.

MPA’s Counselor in Training Program

14-18 YEARS

Monday-Friday, 8:45 a.m.-4:15 p.m. $395 for each two-week program. Minimum commitment of two weeks required.

MPA’s Counselor in Training (CIT) program has been developed to enrich the experience of older campers at our summer art camps. CITs, chosen by MPA to participate, will experience working with younger children in a day camp setting. This program is designed to encourage teaching and leadership skills. CITs will assist in planning and leading activities for our young campers. This opportunity is ideal for students interested in art, teaching and developing their leadership style under the supervision of MPA’s master faculty. For Rising 5th-9th Graders

With the end of the school year quickly approaching, there’s no need to worry about keeping your child active and happy this summer. The Old Firehouse’s Summer Camp has you covered with eight weeks of fantastic trips and memorable experiences. Be sure to sign up early as these weeks sell out fast. For your convenience, there are three ways you can register: online, by phone or at the Old Firehouse. Old Firehouse Summer Camp participant contracts should be submitted no later than Friday, June 3, 2022. All other forms and waivers will be sent to parents via email and will also be available at the Old Firehouse prior to the start of camp. Camp will be held Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. On certain trips, the return time will be later, due to the trip location. Trips depart and return to the Old Firehouse Teen Center, 1440 Chain Bridge Rd., McLean, Va., 22101. Campers may want to bring additional money each day for snacks and incidentals.
