The fall season is upon us! Fall is traditionally a season of harvest, and I am hoping it brings some much-needed good news on flattening the curve of the COVID-19 pandemic.

I know we are all looking forward to that. In the meantime, we are continuing to do all we can to help.

Thankfully, our staff members have risen to the challenges we’re facing and have created some exciting virtual and in-person activities for the fall that will allow us to continue to be of service to you, our residents.

The Alden’s unique and successful summer program, Drive-Thru Drama, will return this fall with two new shows for family audiences. Our Special Events division has created another Scavenger Hunt for the fall and is also sponsoring virtual events, including McLean Uncorked, Pet Fest and our Holiday Art and Crafts Show. Our fall class offerings are being developed and expanded daily, as we work with our instructors to offer enjoyable and safe options for all ages. The Old Firehouse is taking it’s After School Club meetings online. And children can enjoy several hands-on activities like decorating pumpkins and gingerbread houses at home with the help of our Youth Events staff.

District Residents Asked to Participate in MCC Virtual Budget Public Hearing FY2022 Budget Public Hearing is Set for Sept. 23

Three Adults, Two Teens Appointed to MCC Governing Board Fairfax County Board of Supervisors (BOS) appointed five new members to MCC’s Governing Board on Tuesday, June 9. Five residents of Small District 1A-Dranesville won seats on the board by getting the highest number of votes by absentee ballot.

The League of Women Voters of the Fairfax Area acted as tellers.

New adult members are Barbara Zamora-Appel, Bill Glikbarg and Melanie Sletten, who will serve three-year terms. The new Langley High School boundary area member is Ivy Chen and the new McLean High School Boundary area member is Tyler Jensen, who will serve one-year terms.

The MCC Governing Board invites residents of Small District 1A-Dranesville to attend its virtual public hearing and submit comments and/or suggestions on the Center’s fiscal year 2022 budget. The Public Hearing on the FY 2022 Budget will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 23. All meetings of the Governing Board are open to the public.

SPECIAL EVENTS Fantastic Fall Scavenger Hunt

Join your friends, family, and community for MCC's Fantastic Fall Scavenger Hunt! This exciting fall virtual event allows for you and your team to compete against other teams and win prizes. This is the perfect event to stay local and have fun with your friends and family.

The Fantastic Fall Scavenger Hunt is a game played on a smart phone in which teams complete 75 missions (or challenges) both indoors and outdoors. Missions include answering questions, taking specific photos or video, finding a specific item, geocaching or completing specific tasks as given in a list provided by the Game Master. The scavenger hunt will take place in and around McLean and from your own home.

The show includes pottery, glass, jewelry, holiday decorations, mixed media, fashion accessories, wood, fine art, artisanal foods, soaps, skincare and more. THE OLD FIREHOUSE

The Old Firehouse Center (OFC) provides an incredible experience and safe environment for 7th-12th graders. Participants enjoy exposure to new recreational activities and develop social skills under the supervision of professionally experienced staff members who facilitate organized activities, daily clubs and day trips. Registration Processing Easy Ways to Register ONLINE Just click on the pink “Register” button in the upper right corner of any page of our website, or on a seven-digit activity number, which will link you to our online registration system. Online registration begins at midnight on the registration start date.

MAIL Mail a completed registration form with payment in the form of a check, money order or credit card to: McLean Community Center, Attn: Registrar, 1234 Ingleside Ave., McLean, VA 22101.

IN PERSON/DROP OFF You may register in person at the Center from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. At other times, drop a completed registration form and payment (in the form of a check or money order, or by completing the credit card information on the form) into the registration box.

Instructors may not accept registrations or extend verbal commitments.

Payment

Absences from Class

• Payment is due at the time of registration in the form of a check, money order or credit card (American Express, Discover, MasterCard, or Visa) number with expiration date. If paying by check, please make payable to McLean Community Center, unless otherwise noted.

• Absences and personal scheduling conflicts are not reimbursable.

• Receipt confirmations will be emailed. If no email address is provided, receipt confirmations will be mailed.

Senior Discounts • Senior citizens (age 60 and older) are eligible to receive a ten (10) percent discount on classes except where noted.

• Senior discounts are not available for tours and other activities.

Materials Fee • All materials fees are due to the instructor on the first day of class, unless otherwise noted.

Class & Activity Refund Policy • All withdrawals, refund and cancellation requests must be submitted in writing to registrar@mcleancenter.org.

Restrictions • Once a class, camp or activity is in session, refunds may be granted only for medical reasons or for extenuating circumstances as determined by the General Programs Director and the Registrar. Medical requests must be accompanied by a doctor’s note (verification).

• The Center is not obligated to make up classes due to absences and personal scheduling conflicts. However, each instructor has her/his own make-up policy; arrangements for make-up classes are scheduled through individual instructors. Please do not contact the Center.

General Information

Holidays & Inclement Weather • The Center will be CLOSED on the following days: Columbus Day (10/12), Veterans‘ Day (11/11), Thanksgiving (11/26–27), Christmas Eve (½ Day, 12/24) and Christmas Day (12/25).

• The class program follows Fairfax County Public Schools’ inclement weather policy. In case of inclement weather, check our website (www.mcleancenter.org), call 703-790-0123, TTY: 711 (hearing impaired), or listen for cancellation information on local radio stations.

• Classes canceled due to inclement weather will be rescheduled, if possible. If not, a prorated refund will be issued.
