s summer slowly slips away like a wonderful friend full of laughter and mirth, Vermont rolls out the red, gold and yellow carpet to usher in the fall and magical tapestry of colors created every year by Mother Nature.

There really is no such thing as a bad foliage road trip in the Green Mountain State. But there are definitely many roads not taken at literally every turn from the most traveled highways and byways. A cornucopia of pumpkin muffins, apple cider, cider doughnuts and cinnamon spice-flavored drinks engulf the senses of locals and visitors alike. Once you discover this corner of Vermont, you will want to return again and again, especially in the fall. The best foliage route is to travel up I-91 to St. Johnsbury. Take Route 5 to Route 5A and head past Burke up to Lake Willoughby, one of the most beautiful lakes in New England. Your journey takes you through lovely towns and rolling green pastures as Burke Mountain, Mount Pigsah and the Willoughby Gap loom in the distance. The true reward of this trip is the winding road around Lake Willoughby that yields endless views of red, orange and gold leaves along the five-mile byway set against the reflection of a crystal clear body of water. When you circle back to Burke and St. Johnsbury, cap your amazing day with this cocktail:

Pumpkin Martini >

1½ ounces Metcalfe’s Vermont Maple Cream Liquor 1½ ounces Catamount Vodka 2 tablespoons pumpkin puree Dash of pumpkin spice and vanilla extract Graham cracker rim Dip rim of the glass in maple syrup and then lightly press the rim into crumbled graham crackers for garnish. Combine ingredients into a shaker with ice. Shake hard and strain into glass. Top with smoked cinnamon bitters.

Lamoille Valley Rail Trail and Lamoille River Smugglers' Notch is one of the most popular fall foliage routes for leaf peepers, but for those who head further past the ski resort area there is another hidden gem. Route 15 takes you along the Lamoille Valley Rail Trail and the Lamoille River through charming villages and farms to the village of Jeffersonville. This town has quaint antique shops, a café and other eateries and boutiques. This route offers a genuine Vermont experience. A spirited gin cocktail will top it off:

Green Mountain National Forest While many fall foliage tour buses drive the main routes that skirt the eastern and western edges of the Green Mountain National Forest to head to destinations like Manchester and Stowe, they don’t know what they are missing. There are two roads that cut through the middle of the forest, yielding foliage that is both private and quiet.

Take Route 4 to Killington and then on Route 100 north. Route 73 just south

of Rochester and Route 125 in Hancock serve as the prized portals of your journey. Thousands of trees dressed in their best autumn colors will greet you as you drive the narrow two-lane road through the national forest. You will definitely want to take it slow so you can take it all in. There are also places where you can pull over and see a mountain stream make its way through the forest. Route 125 takes you to Middlebury, and Route 73 leads you to Brandon. Both communities are great places to enjoy a vintage Vermont cocktail.

Champlain Valley Our next hidden gem path takes us through the heart of the Champlain Valley, located between the western edge of the Green Mountain National Forest and Lake Champlain. Drive Route 7 from Vergennes, Vermont’s oldest city, to Charlotte and Shelburne just south of Burlington and prepare to be dazzled by some of the most beautiful country in the state. Covered bridges, signature red barns, pastures full of Holstein cows and white church steeples complement the season. The fall foliage your will encounter along this route will fill your senses with joy and wonder, especially as you make your way through the charming village of Stowe towards Mount Mansfield. If you have the time, it is worth driving up the toll road to the summit where you can see the fall foliage, mountain ranges and all the way to Lake Champlain and beyond to the Adirondacks on a clear day. Saxtons River Distillery raises money for Ukrainkian refugees

L

ike the rest of the world, Christian Stromberg watched the morning news in horror on Feb. 25, realizing Russia launched a massive invasion in Ukraine was a heart-wrenching moment.

The War in Ukraine is now entering its eighth month and for Christian, it has been unbearable to accept. The owner of Saxtons River Distillery in Brattleboro said his family is originally from Eastern Europe and seeing thousands of Ukrainian refugees in Lithuania who need food, water and shelter cut very deep. For Christian, it’s not just their war, it’s his war as well.

“If you look at my family story, my great grandfather and great grandmother were getting out of Lithuania and getting away from the Russians. It’s our story when we see waves of people being displaced and going to these countries,” Christian said.

His sister, Kerry Seacrest, serves as the Lithuanian counsel for Vermont and has traveled to that Eastern European nation frequently since the fighting began. “The people we know are hosting refugees,” Christian explained.

Christian even recalled going to a Vermont summer camp that was run by nuns who were refugees that fled Russia..

Christian said he asked the State of Vermont to boycott all Russian vodka and Russian products, and in alignment with the Governor’s Executive Order, the Department of Liquor and Lottery agreed to stop selling Russian spirits. “What can you do short of American soldiers going over?” he asked himself.

There was only one thing left to do: hold a fundraiser to raise money to help the Ukrainian

refugees. Christian decided to hold a “Night for Ukraine” at Saxtons River Distillery on Aug. 25 that featured a complimentary signature cocktail and Eastern European cuisine. His goal was to raise at least $10,000 and, more importantly, generate some continuous fundraising momentum in Vermont for this cause as long as possible.

Tickets were sold for up to $60 per person. An online auction with minimum bids of $125 for higher-end items began on Aug. 4, and an in-person auction for various items at the event were also held. The money raised was donated to two relief organizations: Blue Yellow-Aid, which provides support to soldiers, volunteers and territorial defense forces fight for the Ukraine’s freedom; and Refugee NGO. The fundraiser’s flyer noted that Kerry traveled to Lithuania in July and would identify the appropriate agency there.

“We grew up with stories from the World War II days,” Christian said. He believes the Russians have always posed a threat to its Eastern European neighbors, and he understands why the Ukrainian people are choosing to fight so hard to preserve their freedom. They don’t want to be ruled by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Christian knows that any fundraising they do here in Vermont represents a small portion of what the Ukrainian refugees will need for a long time, even well after the war ends. He realizes the country has been reduced to rubble and

millions of people have lost their homes.

But doing something feels better than doing nothing.

“We can help improve some people’s lives. It’s a small piece, but it’s still a piece and it will matter to the people who will benefit from it,” Christian said.

Christian said another way that Vermonters can support Ukraine is to really pay attention to the spirits they buy or any other products made in Russia.

hen Zach Thomas’s family decided to expand their craft beer store, Fireside Beverage in Ascutney, to also include Vermont spirits, they didn’t realize they were on the cusp of owning a piece of rock and roll history.

They had just purchased an old, abandoned building on Route 5 that used to be the Savage Beast bar. “When we tore down four layers of drywall, we found the backdrop to the stage,” Zach said.

It turns out the first ever performance with the current line of Aerosmith was held on that stage in 1971. Their gig at the former Savage Beast marked the first time that Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, Joey Kramer, Tom Hamilton and their new-

est member Brad Whitford ever played together.

As a huge Aerosmith fan, Zach was in awe. “It was awesome.”

Zach also said that Joe Perry’s Instagram page posted this fact in 2019. “We tried to save that wall to incorporate it into the new wall, but we weren't able to do it,” Zach said. “To be associated with anything Aerosmith, no matter how little or big Aerosmith, is pretty cool.”

Fireside Beverage, agency store 2037, can claim something that no other agency store in Vermont can claim: their new store was the site of a former bar that launched Aerosmith, the most successful American rock band in history. To date, the band has sold more than 150 million records worldwide and 85 million here in the U.S. When one looks at the proximity between Ascutney and Sunapee, NH, where Aerosmith founders Tyler and Perry first met, it is very believable that the band they would form in 1970 would

seek out nearby gigs to hone their sound and style. Tyler and Perry first met in 1970 when they were working at an ice cream parlor on Lake Sunapee.

Zach said that he is originally from Claremont, NH, and he recalls how he and his dad would go fishing in Sunapee and his dad would point out Steven Tyler’s house.

Zach said he, his stepdad, Ross Girard, and his mom, Buffy, have discussed ideas on how they could best highlight their store’s connection to the legendary rock band. Zach said he has even reached out to the band, but has not heard back from anyone yet. When they opened their full-service craft beer, wine and Vermont spirits agency store in April, Zach said he created a Facebook and Instagram video that featured Aerosmith’s “Back in the Saddle.”

Beyond its connection to Aerosmith, Zach points out that Fireside Beverage is creating a stellar reputation of its own as a friendly, local retailer that offers its customers affordable prices on all of its

He said Fireside Beverage has been in business for four years. “We had just been a small craft beer and wine store” inside the family’s camp store that his parents owned in Windsor, Zach explained. “We purchased the Windsor Wine and Spirits in November 2021” and closed the week before Christmas.

In April, they moved to their new location at 6220 Route 5 in Ascutney. Their decision to expand their product line to include Vermont spirits was not even on their radar. Zach said he has always been a huge craft beer enthusiast.

The location they purchased had been a rundown, abandoned building that once housed a butcher shop and hair salon. “We ended up taking down the old building and the old foundation and put up a brand new building,” Zach said.

Zach said they wanted to make the move for some time before they purchased the Windsor store. “It was just a matter of being in the right place in the right time.”

Before the expansion, Zach said their craft beer and wine products sold extremely well during the summer and fall tourism season, but sales would drop off in the winter and early spring.

While Zach notes that “Vermont is the mecca of craft beer,” he also said that people don’t tend to drink it as much in the winter as they do in the summer when they are enjoying barbecues and other outdoor activities.

With the ski crowd not far away at Sunapee, Zach wanted to position his store to capture year-round sales.

“If we’re jumping in, we’re jumping in head first,” Zach said.

He said the future may be even brighter because Mount Ascutney, which is currently open-limited skiing, may soon expand to become a full-service mountain. Mount Sunapee is just 45 minutes away from their store. “I hope it’s true,” Zach said.

Zach also takes pride in his store’s commitment to promote and sell spirits crafted by smaller Vermont distillers. “Any chance we can give back to those other people who are putting their best foot forward, we try,” Zach said. “We push all things Vermont.”

Vermont distillers are making a name for themselves and as a fellow, small family-owned business, Zach said they want to support them. “If we can give back in any way, that’s what we are about.”

Building and maintaining a loyal and local customer fan base is key to enjoying year-round success, Zach said.

“I believe in Karma, so while you definitely have the opportunity in this business to price gauge people if you want to, I am dead set against price gauging,” Zach said.

As a consumer, Zach understands what he would pay or would not pay for a product. “The last thing we want to do is be a burden on people’s wallets,” Zach said.

“Having trust with your customers is what will keep them coming back.”

Now that Fireside Beverage has found its home, Zach plans to stay there for a long time. Like many Vermont family-owned businesses, Zach, 32, would like to see his store passed down to other generations to keep it going.

It’s a safe bet Fireside Beverage will be a mainstay in the Windsor-Ascutney area for the foreseeable future to the delight of local residents and visitors alike.
