Dan and Alison Singleton (at right) are the third-generation owners of Singleton's General Store, where they sell a little of everything, including spirits, and a lot of Made-in-Vermont products.

Serving the Community

SINGLETON’S STORE HAS SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE, EVEN IN A TIME OF DISASTER

Singleton’s General Store in Proctorsville has tried to have a little something for everyone. And never did that become more necessary than in the aftermath of floods that hit Vermont communities in July 2024. Alison and Dan Singleton were just two weeks away from taking over as the third-generation family owners when the Black River breached its banks, wreaking havoc across Ludlow and Proctorsville.

Water filled the store’s basement to the ceiling, destroying everything that had been stored there. The windows cracked.

“We were at the store that whole night. We couldn’t make it home because all the roads around us were completely washed out,” Alison Singleton said. They managed to get their staff home, and as the rain continued, they waded through knee-deep water to a neighbor’s home to sleep with their three sons and dog.

“It definitely will live in my brain forever,” she said. It took several days for the water to be removed and an oil tank spill to be cleaned up.

aged ribeyes, we are known for our quality meats,” Singleton said. “We know every meat product that we have, and it's cut in-house, and we take pride in that.”

The meats have made their way

into Singleton’s deli sandwiches, whose mouth-watering photos have drawn quite the following on social media. That attention has led to growth across its departments.

“One day, my husband and I just started posting on Facebook a sandwich each day, and that got so popular. We got over 20,000 followers within probably two months of us posting these unique sandwiches of flavor combinations you wouldn't normally expect,” Singleton said. “That's been bringing people in. They just see a sandwich, and they assume that we're just a sandwich shop. When they come in

and they see that we have a grocery and liquor and clothing and everything else, everyone's blown away.”

And with that, the community of Singleton’s General Store fans grows.

“We're really proud of the store that we have and the family and staff that we have, and it's amazing,” Singleton said.

“We get to work all together. I've got three little boys, and they'll be at the store with us, helping out, learning their way. And it's amazing. We're thankful for the opportunity that we've had to run the store.”

Singleton's highlights Made-in-Vermont products, which extends to their liquor selection.

VERMONT PRODUCT

Twin State Vistas

Mount Ascutney State Park – Windsor

With views overlooking the Connecticut River Valley of both Vermont and New Hampshire, Mount Ascutney is a favorite for outdoor enthusiasts and sightseers. It was one of Vermont’s first state parks developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps from 1935 to 1938. There are now four trailheads that head to the 3,144-foot summit.

On your hike up, you can view the stonework of Ascutney granite from the original stone toilet buildings and ranger’s quarters. There are also remnants of former quarries, homesteads and logging operations. An auto road heads 3.7 miles up the mountain for a less than one-mile walk to the summit from there.

Blackberries add a touch of floral and sweetness to this Vermont-made bourbon (which is made with maple) — pair it with a creamy brie.

No. 14 Blackberry Smash

2 ounces No. 14 Bourbon from Vermont Spirits Distilling 2 lime wedges, squeezed

4-5 blackberries, plus some for garnish

2-3 mint leaves

Club soda

Combine lime, blackberries and mint leaves in a shaking glass and muddle. Add ice and No. 14 Bourbon. Shake vigorously until combined and well chilled. Pour into a chilled glass, and add club soda to taste. Add an extra blackberry or mint leaf for garnish.

Record-setting Ride

Lamoille Valley Rail Trail

As the longest rail trail in New England at 93 miles, the Lamoille Valley Rail Trail passes through 18 towns stretching from St. Johnsbury to Swanton. The smooth gravel path is great for biking (including e-bikes), walking and horseback riding. It provides connections in winter to the state’s extensive snowmobile trail network.

In addition to recreation and immersion in Vermont’s natural landscape, the LVRT offers historically significant and impressive structures such as the Fisher Covered Bridge, the bridges in Morristown and Swanton, historic railroad station buildings, historic stone culverts, a railway workers’ memorial and more. Maps of the routes are available from the Vermont Rail Trail System website.

We couldn’t have a bourbon cocktail list without including the mint julep. Pair it with a tangy, peppery pimento cheese spread served with rustic crackers, celery sticks and bell pepper wedges.

Mint Julep

Mint leaves

¼ ounce simple syrup

2 ounces bourbon

In a Julep cup or rocks glass, lightly muddle 8 mint leaves in the simple syrup.

Add bourbon and pack the glass with crushed ice.

Stir until the glass is frosted and garnish with a mint sprig and a few drops of Angostura (optional).

Unique Ecology

North Hero State Park – North Hero

With about a third of the state’s park lying below 100 feet in elevation, adjacent to Lake Champlain, which fluctuates from 95 to 101 feet about sea level, North Hero State Park is seasonally flooded. This floodplain area is a valuable wildlife habitat that’s uncommon in Vermont. Among the animal species you might spot if you decide to perambulate around the shore are wild-tailed deer, migratory waterfowl, ruffed grouse, American woodcocks, chain pickerel, map turtles and more.

When you’re done with birdwatching, try this bourbon cocktail. A mature cheddar will enhance the ginger beer flavors.

Horsefeather

1.5 ounces bourbon

4 ounces ginger beer

4 dashes Angostura bitters

1 lemon wedge

Add whiskey, ginger beer, and bitters to a Collins or highball glass filled with ice. Squeeze lemon wedge over the drink, and add the wedge husk to the glass.

Stir gentle to combine.

Splish Splash Bash

Woodford State Park - Bennington

On the shores of the Adams Reservoir and adjacent to the Green Mountain National Forest on a plateau, this park is at the highest elevation of any other in the state at 2,400 feet.

The park offers a swimming area, a cartop boat put-in area and canoe and stand-up paddleboard rentals. Anglers can fish in the reservoir. Adams Reservoir is primarily a brook trout fishery, anglers will want to use traditional trout fishing tactics and equipment. There’s also a 2.7-mile trail that circumnavigates the lake.

A sharp, tangy aged cheddar will pair well with this cocktail’s citrus and whiskey notes.

Whiskey Sour

2 ounces bourbon

1 ounce freshly squeezed lemon juice

¾ ounce simple syrup

1 egg white from small to medium egg

Ice

1 maraschino cherry

Add bourbon, lemon juice, simple syrup and egg white to a cocktail shaker without the ice to start. Shake vigorously for 10 seconds to incorporate the egg white.

Add ice and shake for another 10 seconds to chill.

Strain into a rocks or coupe glass, and add more ice if desired.

Garnish with cherry.

With a slightly spicy, oaky vanilla aroma, this medium-bodied bourbon brings mellow hints of caramel, vanilla, grain and oak flavor with a lightly sweet, toasted oak finish Sip it neat, on the rocks or mix it up in any number of bourbon- or whiskey-centered cocktails Code 019068

This whiskey is incredibly smooth, with some maple sweetness and subtle hints of spice The heavy presence of maple causes the bourbon to be somewhat thick on the tongue When opening the bottle, the cork was even a little sticky Code 900530
