Promoting safety and harmony on shared trails is a collective responsibility. By following trail etiquette, we contribute to a safer and more enjoyable experience for everyone.
STAY ON RIGHT, PASS ON LEFT
Communicate clearly with your voice or sounding device, like a bell.
KEEP IT SAFE, SLOW & FRIENDLY
When riding an e-bike or e-scooter be aware of walkers, runners, and cyclists.
STAY ALERT
Ride, run, and walk with one ear tuned to your surroundings, and maintain good eye contact.
PACK IN, PACK OUT
Keep trails and streams clean by disposing of trash and pet waste. Take out what you bring in.
Follow posted signage and rules in parks and along trails.
STAY ON THE PATH
Use only designated trails and paths for safety and security.
RESPECT WILDLIFE
Don’t feed, chase, or touch wildlife. Watch from a distance.
KEEP PETS ON A LEASH
Even behaved dogs can create unpredictable situations with trail users, wildlife, and other dogs.
This summer, the McKinney Parks and Recreation Department implemented an innovative approach to land management by introducing targeted livestock grazing, commonly known as goatscaping, along a particularly challenging stretch of the Wilson Creek Trail. This sustainable and cost-effective method deployed a herd of goats to naturally manage overgrowth across 36 acres between Bonnie Wenk Park and Al Ruschhaupt Park.
The selected area is known for its dense underbrush, exposed tree roots, and constant trail use, making traditional mowing difficult, time-consuming, and potentially hazardous to both equipment and staff. With goats able to navigate rough terrain and consume unwanted vegetation down to the roots, the department saw an opportunity to explore a more efficient, environmentally friendly solution.
Over a four-week period, the goats cleared what would have taken city crews more than two months to complete. Their work eliminated the need for chemical treatments, reduced staff exposure to poison ivy, and significantly improved visibility from nearby parking lots to playground areas to enhance both aesthetics and public safety. In total, the project saved the city more than $37,500 in labor and equipment costs.
Beyond their utility, the goats quickly became a community favorite. Enclosed in temporary fencing and monitored by trained herding dogs and professional handlers, the herd attracted the attention of curious trail users. Many stopped to snap photos, ask questions, and express support for the city’s eco-conscious initiative.
The success of this pilot project not only reinforced McKinney’s commitment to sustainability but also opened the door for future use of goatscaping in other natural areas throughout the city. Though the goats have moved on, their impact remains, leaving behind clearer trails, safer access, and a growing reputation for innovation in urban land management.

Once you are in our system, you will not need to prove residency again unless your address changes. The only acceptable forms of proof include a valid driver’s license or state identification card or a current electric, gas, water or trash bill that shows your address. Resident rates are only available to those who live within the city limits of McKinney.
