Greetings, Welcome to the McKesson Black Excellence Employee Resources Group’s Annual HBCU and Black Greek Recognition Month! I am your current National Membership Chair for Black Excellence (BE). The Employee Resource Group (ERG), that is dedicated to making McKesson the best place to work for Black people. I am proud to say that we are the largest racial/ethnic base ERG and the 3rd largest overall. Today our membership is over 1,400 McKesson employees. As the past BE National Culture Lead, it was imperative to put our I2CARE principles into action through the unique opportunity to create culturally relevant subcommunities within our corporate BE ERG community. It was imperative to launch subgroups that offered unique bonding, networking, and community collaboration experiences for our members. We have identified over 100 BE members that are alumnae of Historically Black Colleges and Universities. These schools have been safe spaces and foundations for producing the next generation of Black leaders within the work force. Over 100 BE members are part of the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), which is comprised of 9 Black Greek Letter Organizations that are pillars for communities of Black, underserved, and/or marginalized populations. THIS IS BLACK EXCELLENCE! As we celebrate and recognize HBCU’s and Black Greek Letter Organizations, I encourage you all to continue to “Show up and show out”. Attending an HBCU was one of the best things I ever did. Being surrounded by people of color from all walks of life unified by a purpose to excel academically and culturally, shaped me into the person I am today. I learned the value of HBCU’s by better understanding the fact that education had not always been available to us. Xavier University of Louisiana was founded by Sister Katherine Drexel because she recognized the importance for all people to have access to learn and the possibility to prosper. Attending an HBCU gave me an entirely new outlook on life. I had a whole new family of friends that welcomed me on road trips to their homes and whose families treated me like I was one of their own. To this day, I can “pull up” and be received at my fellow Xavierites’ homes just like it was back in the day. We have all grown into productive citizens of society and despite the intense amount of “kicking it” that was done, we are rooted in service to our communities and leaving a legacy of edifying the culture. This show of pride extends way further than just one’s own HBCU campus. When I see anyone from an HBCU, there is an immediate connection, whether it be discussing similarities of our experiences or playful jesting about old school rivalries. While many think going to an HBCU may be limiting, for many it is a rite of passage. I can look back at all the SpringFest concerts, Bayou Classic events, Step Shows, and afternoons on the yard, and smile. Attending an HBCU afforded me both an education and an EXPERIENCE . I often say, I wouldn’t be who I am today without my faith (God), my family, and my foundation (XU). To me, HBCU’s = BLACK EXCELLENCE. All Hail XU!

FACTS - Alpha Phi Alpha™, the first intercollegiate Greekletter fraternity established for African American Men, was founded on December 4, 1906™ at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York by seven college men who recognized the need for a strong bond of brotherhood among African descendants in this country. The seven visionary founders, known as the “Jewels” of the fraternity, are Henry Arthur Callis, Charles Henry Chapman, Eugene Kinckle Jones, George Biddle Kelley, Nathaniel Allison Murray, Robert Harold Ogle, and Vertner Woodson Tandy. FACTS – On November 17, 1911, Omega Psi Phi was founded inside the Science Building (later renamed Thirkield Hall) at Howard University located in Washington, D.C. The founders were three undergraduates — Edgar Amos Love, Oscar James Cooper and Frank Coleman. Joining them was their faculty adviser, Ernest Everett Just. From the initials of the Greek phrase meaning, “friendship is essential to the soul“, the name Omega Psi Phi was derived. That phrase was selected as the motto. FOUNDATION - Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance and Uplift were adopted as Cardinal Principles.

The Delta Sigma Theta Founders’ first act of public service was participating in the Suffrage March of 1913. Unique Facts About JSU: Home of the world-renowned band, the famous Sonic Boom of the South! JSU Homecoming Tradition: JSU has a homecoming tradition for all alumni to return to "The Yard" on the Friday before homecoming to reunite and reminisce on the good ol' days. Most greeks come back and prepare to stroll or "set it owt" to show that they still got IT and its good vibes all around. Favorite Homecoming Memory: Homecoming 2018 was the 10-year anniversary for my line, the 47 S.I.L.E.N.C.E.C.C. While I'm no stranger to setting owt the yard, I don't recall there being so many phones to capture the moment. When it came time for my chapter to do our signature stroll and I found myself at the front of the line, I had no idea my photo and videos would end up all over the internet. LOL! #GoodTimes

Grambling State University opened on November 1, 1901 as the Colored Industrial and Agricultural School. It was founded by the North Louisiana Colored Agriculture Relief Association, organized in 1896 by a group of African-American farmers who wanted to organize and operate a school for African Americans in their region of the state.
Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute was founded in 1868. As the academic program evolved from that of a secondary school into a four-year college, and then into a university, the school’s name changed to Hampton Institute (1930) and then to Hampton University (1984). The University is the result of the merger of four institutions: Richmond Theological Seminary, Wayland Seminary, Hartshorn Memorial College, and Storer College. Richmond Theological Seminary held classes in Richmond, Virginia at Lumpkin’s Jail, a former holding cell for runaway slaves. During the same time, Wayland Seminary was founded by the American Baptist Home Mission Society in Washington, D.C. Two years later in 1867, Storer College was founded in Harper’s Ferry, West Virginia, and in 1883, Hartshorn Memorial College opened its doors in Richmond as the first college for African American women.

The Rev. P.F. Morris, pastor of Court Street Baptist Church in Lynchburg, Va., offered the resolution that authorized the establishment of the institution. Just 21 years out of slavery, African American Baptist leaders founded Lynchburg’s oldest institution of higher education for men and women to meet the growing demands of our community for better-educated and trained ministers, missionaries, and public school teachers.

https://www.wvstateu.edu/ West Virginia State University was founded under the provisions of the Second Morrill Act of 1890 as the West Virginia Colored Institute, one of seventeen land-grant institutions authorized by Congress and designated by the states to provide for the education of black citizens in agriculture and the mechanical arts. West Virginia was one of the states that maintained segregated educational systems at that time. From 1891 to 1915, the original Institute offered the equivalent of a high school education, vocational training, and teacher preparation. In 1915, the West Virginia Collegiate Institute began to offer college degrees.
Founded in 1856, Wilberforce University can trace its origin to a period of history before the Civil War, when the Ohio Underground Railroad was established as a means of escape for all those blacks who sought their freedom in the North from the yoke of slavery, one of the destination points of this railroad became Wilberforce University. Wilberforce University, the nation's oldest private, historically black university, was named to honor the great 18th century abolitionist, William Wilberforce.
