PLENARY: “IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE: NAVIGATING ACADEMIA AS A URM” Wednesday, June 22 | 7 p.m. | Holmes Lounge
ABSTRACT Academia can be challenging but also extremely rewarding and fulfilling. There are no real secrets to succeeding in academia…it all comes down to recognizing the system for what it is and making the system work for you. In this talk, I will share my perspective on navigating academia as a Black scientist from graduate student to tenured faculty member. BIO Tyrone Porter earned his BS in electrical engineering from Prairie View A&M University and his PhD in bioengineering from University of Washington. Prior to joining UT Austin, he was a principal investigator at the Nanomedicine and Medical Acoustics Laboratory at Boston University. Porter has held a variety of leadership positions in academia. At Boston University he was Co-Director for the NIH-funded Translational Research in Biomaterials Program and was an Associate Director for the Nanotechnology Innovation Center. As the inaugural Faculty Fellow for Diversity and Inclusion at BU, Prof. Porter developed programs to recruit and retain talented students from underrepresented groups in STEM doctoral programs. Since arriving at UT, Porter joined the NIH-funded Imaging Training Program, has chaired the Committee for Graduate Recruitment, Retention, and Experience Committee in Engineering, and served on the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee for both his department and the Cockrell School of Engineering. Porter has been equally active in professional societies, founding and chairing the Committee to Improve Racial Diversity and Inclusivity in the Acoustical Society of America serving as a member of the Board of Directors for the American Institute of Physics. Porter’s commitment to diversity is reflected in his research group, the Diverse Engineering Applications Lab (D.E.A.L.). The guiding principle for the lab is “Diversity drives innovation, creativity, and personal growth”, making it clear that personal and professional maturation are equally important and benefit from a diverse environment. Research in Porter’s lab focuses on ultrasound technologies with chemical and biomolecular engineered vesicles for diagnostic and therapeutic applications. Porter’s overall goal is to push the application of ultrasound technology in new and exciting directions, including immunomodulation and reversible opening of the blood-brain barrier.

PLENARY: “SOCIETAL IMPACT OF BIPOC RESEARCHERS IN ENGINEERING” Thursday, June 23 | 11 a.m. | Jubel Hall 120
ABSTRACT Juggling research productivity with outreach activities can be especially challenging for BIPOC scientists and faculty, who typically experience higher than average demands in both areas. I will discuss the importance of and strategies for achieving both scientific and societal impact while maintaining a healthy work-life balance. BIO Evan Scott, PhD, is the Kay Davis Professor of Biomedical Engineering & MicrobiologyImmunology within the Northwestern University’s McCormick School of Engineering and Feinberg School of Medicine. Dr. Scott is the director of PhD Admissions of Biomedical Engineering, co-director of the Multidisciplinary Training Program in Child and Adolescent Health (TL1), and co-director of the Therapeutics Design & Development Core in the O’Brien Kidney Research Core Center. Prof. Scott is a long-time member of the Diversity Committee of the BMES and as inaugural director of the Council of Diversity that works with multiple national societies to increase participation from under-represented students and leaders in engineering. Prof. Scott has developed outreach programs that educate high school students and their parents about STEM career pathways, and judged fellowship and student science at both Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS) and Graduate Education for Minorities (GEM). Prof. Scott maintains a highly active research laboratory that develops nanotechnology and biomaterials science for controlled modulation of the immune system with a demonstrated impact on kidney disease, cancer, infectious disease, glaucoma, vascular inflammation, and cell/organ transplantation. Dr. Scott respectively received a BS and PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Brown University in 2002 and Washington University in St. Louis in 2009. As a Whitaker International Scholar, he pursued his postdoctoral research with Prof. Jeffrey Hubbell and Prof. Melody Swartz. Dr. Scott is a recipient of the 2015 NIH Director’s New Innovator Award and the 2015 National Science Foundation CAREER Award. He was selected as a 2017 BMES Young Innovator of Cellular and Molecular Bioengineering, 2018 Nano Research Young Innovator in Nanobiotechnology, 2018 American Society for Engineering Education PRISM 20 under 40, National Academy of Engineering Frontiers of Engineering 2018 speaker, 2019 Biomaterials Science Emerging Investigator, and 2019 Halo 40 under 40 Chicago Scientist. In 2022, he was elected into the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) College of Fellows.

BIO As executive director of new media strategy, I am passionate about brands and how they convey themselves through social media platforms to share information, tell their story and engage with their audiences. At the university, I seek opportunities to create and highlight dynamic stories about the unique and amazing individuals that make up the WashU community. Prior to my time at WashU, I worked for Scottrade Inc. where I managed multiple roles involving client engagement, including social media, video, client education and events. I earned a B.A. in Corporate Communications from Fontbonne University. Born in St. Louis, Mo and raised in Ferguson, my experiences guide and ground me as an individual and as a professional.

PLENARY: “BRANDING YOURSELF, YOUR SCIENCE, AND YOUR LAB” Thursday, June 23 | 7 p.m. | St. Louis Zoo
ABSTRACT “Developing your brand in science”. What is your personal “brand” in science? What are you known for and what do people associate with you scientifically? In this talk, we will discuss how to cultivate your scientific brand, and what its implications may be on developing your science and your career. We will also discuss different strategies on promoting your brand, including social media. BIO Dr. Farshid Guilak is a Professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Washington University and Director of Research for the Shriners Hospitals for Children –St. Louis Shriners. He is also the co-director of the Washington University Center of Regenerative Medicine and has appointments in the Departments of Developmental Biology, Mechanical Engineering & Materials Science and Biomedical Engineering. His laboratory is pursuing a multidisciplinary approach to investigate the etiology and pathogenesis of osteoarthritis, as a basis for the development of new pharmacologic and stem-cell therapies. He is currently PI of grants from the NIH, NSF, DOD, and several foundations. He has published nearly 400 articles in peer-reviewed journals and has co-edited four books. He has served as the editorin-chief of the Journal of Biomechanics for over 20 years, Associate editor for Osteoarthritis & Cartilage, past-President of the Orthopaedic Research Society and Chair of the Skeletal Biology Structure and Regeneration NIH Study Section. Prof. Guilak has received multiple awards for mentorship and research, is a fellow of AIMBE, ASME, and ORS and was elected to the National Academy of Engineering 2022.

This enlightening talk is filled with inspiring narratives and insightful techniques for overcoming obstacles encountered during and after doctoral degree pursuits. Dr. Gray will share how he was able to “Fight On” at the University of Southern California (USC) to earn his Doctorate of Philosophy Degree in Systems Engineering while completing USC’s novel Health, Technology & Engineering graduate certification. Join this encouraging plenary session to learn how you too can rise above the challenges of your doctoral program to become successful both in academia and industry if you choose and commit to doing so. BIO Dr. JL (Joshua) Gray is the President & Principal Consultant of Lukman Consulting Group, which provides wise transformation solutions to higher education, public sector, and health systems clients for achieving effectiveness, efficiency, and innovation goals. Dr. Gray has over two decades of consulting experience in the Biotechnology, Defense, Education, Energy, Healthcare, Insurance, and Transportation industries. Joshua has had the privilege of working for the Raytheon Technologies Corporation, General Electric Company, as well as Booz Allen Hamilton and has consulted the Department of Veterans Affairs, Genentech of Roche, as well as Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. Dr. Gray is also a transformational engineering instructor and skilled community leader. Joshua is a Professor in the Practice in Rice University’s Center for Engineering Leadership where he is co-developing a Masters of Engineering Management and Leadership Program and he previously taught Engineering Economics at Georgia Tech as well as the University of Southern California. As a community leader, he serves as the National Society of Black Engineers Houston Professionals Chapter President and the Healthcare Innovations Group Director. He is committed to elevating diversity, equity, and inclusion in science, technology, and engineering. Dr. Gray earned his Doctorate of Philosophy Degree in Systems Engineering from the University of Southern California (USC), his Master of Science Degree in Management Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and his Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Engineering from Florida State University. Joshua has served as a Diversity Consultant for the USC Student Affairs Vice President, Equity Advisor for the USC Graduate School Vice Provost, and an Inclusion Advocate for the USC Viterbi Engineering School Vice Dean. He is also a certified Six-Sigma Black Belt, Project Management Professional, and Health Technology Engineer, who specializes in efficiency, effectiveness, and innovation.
