JAMES L. FULLER COLLECTION
McKee Library digitizes collection of 19th century documents The James L. Fuller Collection of manuscripts from the 19th century have been digitized are available on KnowledgeExchange@Southern, the university’s institutional repository. Included in the collection are personal letters, legal documents, and bills of sale for slaves. Although this is a small collection, its contents, especially the bills of sale, are historically significant and useful teaching tools for several academic departments. This collection was only recently discovered because it had been erroneously grouped with the Thomas Memorial Collection in the 1970s. Upon closer inspection, it was made clear due to the inclusion of a note that the contents in that particular box were from a separate donor. The library’s archival assistant, Abby Hansen, digitized, interpreted, and transcribed the collection materials. Detailed descriptions and document transcriptions are included with each manuscript’s photograph. The creation of a finding aid and further research into the collection’s provenance and history will be done in the coming months.
