Letter from CEO I am constantly amazed at how God provides for the Children’s Homes.

Today I was driving off campus when I received a call asking for my help to unload a U-Haul trailer.

When I arrived, I was amazed at what I found. There was a 26 foot U-Haul full of office furniture for our new clinic.

Two of our wonderful donors, John and Katie Robertson had driven this rental truck all the way from Starkville through the torrential rain and a tornado watch to deliver over 70 pieces of furniture to us. Katie and Betty Jane Chatham, a faithful former board member, got the furniture donated from Flex-Steel Industries in Starkville. Members from the Pairs and Spares Sunday School Class at FUMC in Starkville collected the money to rent the U-Haul.

We were in need of office furniture to furnish the clinic, and what we received was an unexpected gift from God. I’m glad that God changed my plans that morning because He allowed me to experience the blessings of His gifts and the joy through those who made it all possible.

Often times, I find myself speechless by people like you, who support our homes. It never fails that when we are looking for funds to support a program or to renovate a home, or needing items like the furniture for the new clinic, God’s timing is never late. Philippians 4:19 reads, “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.” I am thankful for being able to witness God’s perfect timing through individuals like you.

“I am here, don’t worry.”

It is dark and cold in the house because the electricity has been turned off. Jacob, 6, and Joe, 7, are huddled together under a blanket. They are hungry and all alone. As usual, their mother is nowhere to be found.

Living day to day, hour to hour waiting for their mother to come home has been all these two sweet boys know. The house is quiet and empty, but Jacob and Joe have learned how to cope. Joe has taught himself how to read, and teaches Jacob. They are survivors and sadly, they have lived this way for several years before their neighbor reported their mother to the DHS. They bounced around from foster home to foster home for a couple of years before coming to MCH. When they arrived on our campus, they were nervous and quiet. They began school for the first time in several years. Today Jacob, 16, is on the honor roll, and Joe, 17, is working on his GED. They are happy, healthy, and have found a family at MCH. Can you imagine what life must have been like for these boys? There are other children in Mississippi who are suffering just like them. Children who should be playing baseball and riding bikes are fighting just to survive.

Because of you and your support, you allowed MCH the opportunity to provide Jacob and Joe with safe homes, hot meals, and a family that loves them unconditionally.

Donor Spotlight With Robyn Burchfield I had the opportunity to meet one of our most loyal donors recently, and after visiting with them, my heart was full.

Mr. Freeny greeted me at his door with open arms, and a warm smile. After stepping inside, I found myself surrounded by family pictures. I realized quickly that Mr. and Mrs. Freeny had high standards for what family means to them and to their children.

After 66 years of marriage, they have 4 children, 11 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren. Grabbing Mr. Freeny’s hand, Mrs. Freeny said smiling from ear to ear, “Honey, that’s a long time!”

Mr. and Mrs. Freeny have a long history of helping others and giving back. They have been giving to the Methodist Children’s Homes every month for over 18 years. They have helped over 1,000 youth find safe and secure homes. When I asked them why they give to MCH, Mr. Freeny answered laughing, “Oh… It’s just what we do!”

After serving in the United States Army, Mr. Freeny saw his share of trials and struggles while he was on duty, and when he returned to the U.S., he felt a desire to always give back. “It gives me a peace of mind, and makes me feel better to share a little of what I’ve got,” Mr. Freeny said.

Dressed in their Sunday best, the Freeny’s gave me insight into what an unselfish, generous, God-loving couple looks like. The Methodist Children’s Homes is better because of the Freeny’s, and I thank God for them.

You are Unique and Different…

You are One of a Kind!

When our youth first arrive at MCH, they are full of mixed emotions. It is our goal to welcome each youth with warm smiles, gentle hugs and lots of answers. After their initial assessments and paperwork, each youth walks around the administration building and meets the staff.

In each office hangs a quilt made by a Mississippi church member. Mike Duggar, President and CEO of MCH has a unique way of making each youth feel extra special with quilts.

As Mr. Duggar walks each new resident around from office to office, he explains to them that each quilt is unique and different just like them. He tells them that someone in Mississippi who doesn’t even know them has made this quilt, and is praying for them every day. He then lets them know that Flag Chapel Road is long and will take them anywhere they want to go, but it is their decision as to whether they want this experience to be successful or not. Then, they get to pick their favorite quilt and take it to their new home.

For most of our youth, this is the first thing that they can actually claim as their own. It is theirs, and no one can take it away from them. Many will cry themselves to sleep at night and use the quilt to wipe their eyes. It becomes their security blanket, and when they hold it, they know that someone loves and prays for them.Thank you to the many women and church groups around the state who make these beautiful quilts for our youth. You are providing them with a treasure that they will keep forever!

Making Room for Two Chris and Amy Cobb had always wanted to be foster parents, and when they felt God calling them to do just that, they obeyed.

After much prayer, the Cobb’s began the foster parent-training program through the Methodist Children’s Homes. During one of the trainings, Molly and Michelle, twins from one of our group homes spoke to the class about living in foster homes, group homes, and their journey through the “system.”

It was during this time when the Cobb’s realized that they had just met their daughters. “I turned around, and within 10 minutes, Molly and Michelle had our boys laughing and cutting up. They were playing Legos with them and reading books. We felt an almost instant connection.” Amy said. “I remember feeling so much gratitude to MCH, and to the Lord for bringing our family to these precious girls.”

For the next few months, Chris and Amy transformed their garage into not one, but two bedrooms for Molly and Michelle. “The twins are as different as night and day, and one room was not going to work for them!” Amy said. They even let the girls pick out the colors for their rooms to add that special touch.

Move in day was exciting for everyone, and the Cobbs couldn’t wait to start their life with the girls. Amy describes her family as special and unique in the fact that even though they do not share the same last name, they are all identified as a unified family who learns and grows together. “We are a family only by the grace of God. He designed our lives to intertwine and so I know He has His hands on us at all times. We can surely feel the presence of God in our family.”

Today, Molly and Michelle are doing great. They are in a new school, made new friends, and most importantly are surrounded by an amazing foster family who loves them unconditionally. Amy said, “We are a forever family and we would not have it any other way! We are so thankful to MCH for everything they have done for us, and continue to do!”

Making a difference Instead of gifts for Bo Herring’s first birthday, his parents decided to ask their guests to bring warm pajamas for our foster babies.

Gumtree Wholesale and BanCorp South Insurance came through once again this year with wonderful Christmas gifts for 5 of our youth. They were excited to receive these amazing gifts!

You never cease to amaze us with your dedication!

MCH received a $5,500 grant from Plum Creek to install a security system on our campus. Thank you Plum Creek for partnering with us to ensure the safety and security of our youth. You have been an answered prayer to us!

Cardinal Health came and really showed off! They worked hard to help renovate and remodel our Day Treatment room. Thanks for your service… you are incredible!

Sebastopol UMC donated $800.00 to help us purchase Wal-Mart gift cards for Christmas! Our youth LOVE gift cards and you brought smiles to their faces this year!

The Brandon Small Covenant Group from Brandon First UMC adopted one of our youth’s wish list from our Independent Living Program. She wanted items for her apartment, and this amazing group delivered! She was so happy to receive her gifts, and her apartment looks awesome!

Donna Hunt’s art class at East Rankin Academy painted beautiful canvases for each girl’s room at the Waits home. Mr. and Mrs. Breeland came to hang them for us before the Waits’ Open house.

Thanks for making this home sparkle with your beautiful paintings!

College Bound!

Waits Open House

Two of our youth began their college careers this spring semester. Both youth are attending a local community college and could not be happier. They have moved into their dorm rooms, have their schedules complete, and met new friends.

Please pray for them as they begin this new journey in their lives and that they will continue on this road to success.

If you would like to send a care package to these students, they would love to know that you are still supporting them while they are away at school. As you know, any college student loves food, soft drinks, candy, and “junk,” but they will also need necessities like shampoo, soap, toothpaste and toothbrushes, etc. For more information on care packages and how to send them, contact Robyn Burchfield at Rburchfield@mchms.org. Thanks to all of our amazing donors, MCH had the opportunity to renovate, remodel, and reopen one of our group homes on campus. A prayer and dedication ceremony for the Waits Home was held in November. Over 50 of our faithful donors, volunteers, board members, staff and members of the community laid their hands on the home as Rev. Dr. Stephen Cook prayed for the youth and staff who will be living and working here now and in the years to come.

Today this home is busy with girls who take great pride in their beautiful home. Thank you to those who gave financially to make this dream possible. Thank you to the volunteers who spent countless hours renovating this home to make it perfect. Thank you to the churches and individuals who gave towards our Housewarming Campaign to stock this home with all things necessary and “girly.” Thank you to our prayer warriors who pray over all of our youth daily. The Waits Home is standing because this team of people love our youth and MCH. What a blessing it is to have you in our lives!

Youth Spotlight Crescent She is BEAUTIFUL, SMART, FUNNY, and has EVERYTHING going for her!

Age: 17 years old Birthday: June 17th Tell me about yourself. I was born in Pennsylvania and then moved to New Jersey. I lived there until 2009.

What is one thing other people might not know about you? It might sound crazy, but I am terribly shy when I first meet people. Then, when I get comfortable, people think that I am extra happy!

Think back to the first day you stepped on campus and describe how you felt. I was scared. Now I love the home. I have freedom and opportunities to grow and get a job.

How long have you lived here? I have lived at MCH for 4 years now.

What values have you acquired since living here? Believe it or not, in the past I had a really bad self-image of myself. People at MCH lift me up, and I am learning to love myself. Also, I have learned how to become calm when situations come up. I avoid drama and just keep calm and to myself.

Who is one person that you look up to the most at MCH? Ms. Karmiel because she has been with me since my first day at MCH. We have a strong bond and she has taught me how to be myself. She is not in my home anymore, but she still goes out of her way to check on me a couple times each week.

What are your goals for the future? I am a junior now, and I plan on finishing high school and then going to college somewhere in Mississippi.

I am looking at Mississippi College, but not 100% sure yet. I want to major in health care social work and work in a hospital setting.

A Familiar Face In a Strange Place.

When Marcus, 16, arrived at MCH, he was extremely tense about his new home. He had been removed from his family over five years ago and bounced from foster family to group homes. Anxiety got the best of him, and he hardly spoke a word on the drive over to the Seal Home.

His fear quickly vanished when he saw two familiar faces running to the van.

Greeted by hugs and high fives, Marcus found himself surrounded by old friends.

The three boys had once lived together in a former group home. Finally together again, these three are inseparable.

Whether it is play video games or shooting hoops, they are always up to something fun. Their favorite thing to do now is playing youth vs. staff “pick-up” basketball games. And guess who wins… these three friends!

When I think of Marcus and the fears he faced when coming to MCH, I am reminded of Deuteronomy 31:8, “The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; He will never leave you or forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” The Lord already knew Marcus’s fears and placed these other two young men in his life again.

What advice would you give to the “newer” youth on campus? I’d tell the new resident to stay positive and hang around positive people. Don’t get caught up in the girl drama!

How would you say “Thank You” to our donors? Thank you for giving me a place to stay. MCH would not be what it is without you and we wouldn’t have the stuff we have without your help.
