Letter from CEO “We worry about what a child will become tomorrow, yet we forget that she is someone today.”
—Stacia Tauscher, dancer and artist
I came to MCH six months ago. I’ve made a lot of progress here but I’m so ready to be back with my family! At the end of this month I get to go home to my daughter, my mom, and my nephews! I cannot wait to be reunited with my family!
During my time serving as your Methodist Children’s Homes CEO, I am continuously blown away by how God brings the right people at the right time. Over and over again, I see the Lord moving in our donors, volunteers, and staff to meet the needs of children and further the mission of MCH. Over the past two months, MCH has been focusing on further developing our strategic plan and identifying priorities for the next 12 months. It has been an amazing process resulting in a wealth of absolutely fantastic feedback and insight!
When I was 9, I fell riding my bike and got hurt. I told my mom I didn’t want to go to the doctor without my dad. I said, “If Daddy’s not here, I’m not going!” and I didn’t. My dad died a few years later and it seemed like everything changed. I wanted to numb the pain. The only way I knew how was by using drugs. I was 13 at the time. A few months later I found out I was pregnant.
With a focus on the future, it can often be a challenge to also remain in the present. The vision of MCH is to be “the national leader in providing innovative therapeutic foster care services to children and families”. This vision for the future can only be accomplished by investing in today.
When I learned I was pregnant, I stayed clean for almost a year until my baby’s father left me. I thought, “The drugs helped me feel better last time. Maybe using will help me again”. They didn’t help me. Instead, I got arrested. I went to jail and then spent my 16th birthday in rehab.
Today I serve children that have experienced complex trauma. Today I see them suffering the heartbreak of their parent’s rejection. But because of you, I also see eight youth graduating from high school or receiving their GED. I see a youth who will be serving his country in the U.S. Army, and another youth graduating with his associate’s degree this week. Already this year, I see MCH serving 91 children from 29 Mississippi counties.
Coming to MCH has helped me so much. I was able to take recovery classes for school credit, and I moved from 9th grade to 11th grade in five months. Now, because of MCH, I can start my senior year back at home with my family!
When you support the Methodist Children’s Homes, you don’t only change a child’s future but you change a child’s current situation. Your continued support allows us to plan for the future of the Methodist Children’s Homes. You are the reason we can help more children both today and tomorrow. Thank you for allowing God to use you in the lives of children who are so much in need of your help. Your support means more than you know! Only By Grace
All of the staff members have helped me push through my difficulties. I know that at the end of the day, I could get up tomorrow and be a mess, but staff will be there to support me and help me push through. Talking to my therapist can be a big help, too. I can be angry, like ready to fight angry, and she can come talk to me and help me to be happy again. MCH has shown me how important life is, and that there are people out there that actually care about me. Soon I’ll have my daughter back. I’m going to work hard to finish high school and college. I have big plans to be a surgeon and nothing will stop me now! Because of you, Marie can be reunited with her daughter. Her family will be whole once again and full of hope for the future you helped to provide. Thank you for giving to Marie and the many children at your Methodist Children’s Homes.
A Dream Come True You don’t have to be a perfect parent, just the parent they deserve—a parent that loves them.” — Adrienne
After Adrienne introduced herself, Owen asked the question so many foster parents hope to hear, “Can I call you mommy?” From those first moments of meeting, Adrienne and Alex knew this was the child God had been leading them towards. Bringing home Owen during the Christmas season was such a wonderful answer to their prayers! “During Christmas time our house always felt so empty. This year Owen made the house feel full with his laughter and joy,” Adrienne stated. When giving advice to anyone that may be interested in fostering a child, Adrienne says, “I would recommend fostering to anyone. It’s the hardest thing you’ll ever do but it is equally rewarding. You don’t have to be a perfect parent, just the parent they deserve—a parent that loves them.” Did you know that you are making dreams come true? This happy ending began years ago with Alex and Adrienne wanting a big family. But like so many others, they struggled with infertility. After several years, they decided to try fostering a child. “When we first started the process of fostering, I had the mindset of just wanting to adopt, but then I had the realization of the child’s need to still be connected to their birth family,” Adrienne explained. “ You can’t do it for the selfish reason of wanting a child. It has to be because they need a parent!” For the past five months, Alex and Adrienne have had custody of 9-year-old Owen. When they first met on December 15, Owen was so excited. He hid behind a couch waiting for his new family to find him. He jumped out, exclaiming, “Here I am!”
Adrienne went on to say, “There is a child for everyone. Methodist Children’s Homes does a great job of finding the right child for each family.” Because of you, Alex and Adrienne are able to change Owen’s future. They have been approved to adopt Owen and he will be in his forever home! “Donors aren’t giving in vain. It’s not just a tax write off. They are making dreams come true!” Adrienne stated. Your support makes an impact on so many lives. Because of your love, prayers and generosity, God has used you to answer the prayers of Alex and Adrienne. If you are interested in becoming a foster family, please email email@example.com.
Youth Spotlight How did you feel on the first day you stepped on campus? I was very happy to be around new people. How do you feel about MCH now? Sometimes I have bad days, but at times I love to be here. I am glad to have a roof over my head and food on my table. Who is one person you look up to the most at MCH? I look up to my Care Manager, Mrs. Patrice. She is like my role model.
Brittany Tell me about yourself. My name is Brittany. I am 18 years old. I am a person who loves to try out new things. I am a funny person. I love to draw, dance and write poems. Tell me one thing that most people don’t know about you? Something people don’t know about me is that I can be a very shy person. How long have you lived here at MCH? I have been at MCH for 5 months.
What are your dreams and goals for the future? I want to become a social worker or a RN because I love to talk and help people. What advice can you give to the newer girls on campus? Always stay strong because a change is going to come. I would tell them, “A young lady with a weak past becomes a strong woman in the future.” What would you tell our special donors? Thanks for caring and giving your all to the kids who need love the most.
Your Graduating Class! Scentrellis lived in our Seal Boy’s Home. After graduating high school he transitioned into our Community Program. He received his Associates of Arts Degree from Hinds Community College in May. Scentrellis maintained a 3.0 GPA while attending Hinds. He plans to attend a university in the fall and major in computer engineering. We are so proud of him and all of the hard work he has put into achieving his goals! The majority of youth come to MCH two to three grade levels behind. Now, because of all that you have done EIGHT young people have graduated high school or received their GED this semester.
You are changing futures!
2017 Outstanding Missions Group of the Year Brandon First United Methodist Church has been awarded the 2017 Outstanding Missions Group of the Year by the Methodist Children’s Homes. Brandon First UMC has supported and encouraged The Methodist Children’s Homes (MCH) for years. During 2017, they provided gifts for Christmas wish lists of 30 MCH children. Every November for many years, they have hosted Santa’s Soup Kitchen once a week for the benefit of MCH. THANK YOU for all the ways Brandon United Methodist Church continues to serve the children of MCH!
2017 Volunteer of the Year Brack Schloemer has been awarded the 2017 Volunteer of the Year by Methodist Children’s Homes. Brack is a retired CPA from Madison, MS. He has volunteered countless hours in our Finance Department. His knowledge and dedication has been an answer to prayers! For weeks on end, Brack came into the administrative offices and worked just as many hours as our employees. He played a crucial role in helping MCH get through the 2016 financial audit. Brack not only donated his time, but also encourages others to donate. He is an active member of Madison First UMC and brings a check from his Bible study class every month. “Thank you” is not enough to express the gratitude of the Methodist Children’s Homes for all that Brack has done!

Making a Difference
The congregation of Shiloh UMC collected much needed items from our wish list, including sheets, cleaning supplies, hangers, laundry baskets and much more! Thank you for thinking of the children at MCH!
The Music Appreciation class of the Tri-County Academy of Flora raised $583 through their class musical. These funds will go towards gift cards for the children at MCH. What a creative way to raise money and make a difference in the life of a child!
The Children’s Ministry of Coffeeville UMC came to visit us after collecting pillows for our group homes. It was such a blessing to see children caring for other children. Thank you for teaching your sweet children to give to others!
Callie Minshew was selected as the 2017-2018 Gatorade Mississippi High School Volleyball Player of the Year! She donated her $1000 Pay It Forward grant to Methodist Children’s Homes to ensure that our children have the same opportunity to achieve their dreams and follow their passions. Thanks Callie!
The West and East Jackson Districts of the Methodist Conference came together for a work day for our entire campus. Volunteers helped with renovation of our apartments, and the Matthew house. They moved furniture into Grace House and sorted items in our thrift store. We were blessed by seeing so many churches come together to be the hands and feet of Christ.
Making a Difference
Thank you April Bigham for organizing and hosting an amazing fashion show benefitting our youth. The event raised $1,450! Plus, it was an extra exciting night for two of our young men who got to walk the runway! What a great event!
Crossgates UMC hosted their 7th annual Golf Classic benefitting MCH. Their amazing efforts came together to raise over $10,000. Their support and generosity is a true treasure for MCH. What an amazing church!
Day of Hope The 5th Annual Day of Hope was a great event because of you! Thank you to the many volunteers that came together to help get the campus ready for the event. Our youth loved showing you their homes. New friends were made and lives were touched. Thanks for giving our youth HOPE!Â
Thank you so much to everyone who donated a cake for the Day of Hope Cake Auction! It was a huge hit all because of you!

Did You Know?
Summer Fun! Our next adventure is waiting! MCH youth are all geared up for a summer of fun activities. Summer gives our youth the chance to make happy memories they will carry with them for the rest of their lives. The relaxation of summer is a great time for youth to strengthen their relationships with each other and staff members.
• Six youth have graduated from high school with plans for college in the Fall • One youth has joined the U.S. Army this summer • Four youth received their GED
Plans are still being finalized but will include: • A week at camp • Trip to the beach • Passes to Geyser Falls
• One young lady is being reunited with her family, including her one year old daughter
• Fishing, canoeing, and hiking
• Brothers are set to get their own apartment as young adults this summer
• Campfires and scavenger hunts
• T wo youth graduated with their Associate Degrees with plans for attending a 4-year university next semester
• Swimming every week
• Two youth have received driver’s licenses • One youth is now employed with the Department of Corrections
• Trip to see the MS Braves play Please consider helping us fund these and many more memories by sending a financial contribution today.
• One youth has joined JobCorp
Statistically none of these happy endings are supposed to happen for children growing up in the foster care system. Success stories are not the outcomes that society expects for foster children, especially ones who have experienced the level of trauma MCH children have faced. BUT… Through Jesus Christ, Methodist Children’s Homes provides hope and healing to hurting children in Mississippi.
Prayer of a Youth
Your support allows these young people to be more than a statistic. When you give to MCH, you are directly impacting the lives of the most vulnerable youth in our state. Make a donation today to change a child’s future!
”Please help me bring happiness to everyone around me. I’m trying my best but sometimes I have to make choices and it drives me crazy. I’m sorry I’m not always good enough” — Maggie
