2014 Annual Report

Dear MCH Family and Friends, In my 2nd year serving as President and CEO at the Methodist Children’s Homes, I realize how blessed that I am to serve in this role. I am amazed at how each day brings new challenges and expectations.

Through your support the Methodist Children’s Homes made significant strides in improving the services we provide our children and families. Last year’s accomplishments included but were not limited to: •

Increased the number of children served,

•

Increased level of care,

•

Multiple campus renovation projects were completed,

•

Youth graduated from high school and started college,

•

Children were reunified with their families,

•

Revised our by-laws, and

•

Recruitment of new board members.

As I think back on 2014, I am overwhelmed by your generosity. Because of you, 155 youth called MCH their home. This year you held a girl sobbing in your arms because she found out her mom had died.

You were there to give a 17 year old a home because her mom didn’t want her. You cheered on youth as they were the first in their families to graduate high school and college. You were able to hold the hands of teenage girls as they gave birth to precious babies. You witnessed youth who were hungry and scared, and gave them food and a safe place to sleep at night.

You grieved, you loved, you hurt and you cheered. Life is messy… Without your prayers and donations, we wouldn’t be able to stand up and fight for our youth.

Thanks for your support in 2014! I look forward to moving forward in 2015 alongside with you.

2014 HIGHLIGHTS Wellness and Aquatic Center With support from the Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi Foundation and the Thomas Family, MCH began renovations to the Wellness and Aquatic Center. This center will offer our youth swimming and water safety classes and exercise and nutrition classes.

Day of Hope The first Day of Hope was held in April. Everyone was invited to experience the Children’s Home. They spent the day getting to know the youth, touring our homes and enjoying a fish fry.

Thanks to everyone who came and supported our ministry. It was definitely a Day of Hope!

Owen’s Open House With great pride, MCH opened the Owen’s Home.

Owen’s is the 5th home on campus to be renovated since the property was purchased in 2010. Volunteers spent countless hours making sure that this home was perfect. Owens has become a safe and loving place for 10 of Mississippi’s most vulnerable children to live as they begin to heal from physical, sexual, or mental abuse.

Medical Clinic MCH is thankful to have a Medical Clinic right here on campus.

Thanks to St. Dominic Memorial Hospital for providing the funding to open the clinic. This much needed clinic provides prompt and current medical attention to our youth who were spending hours in the health department awaiting care.

Community Day on Campus

DESTINY’S STORY My name is Destiny and I want to tell you about my broken heart. My story is sad, but thanks to you, I have found hope for my future.

My father died when I was eight years old, and that same year I contracted a weird viral infection that targeted my heart, the strongest muscle in my body. I eventually had a heart transplant. The medication that I was prescribed over the next seven years to regulate my heart caused me to have multiple strokes. I was 15 when my mother’s health started declining and I was forced into foster care. Just when I thought it couldn’t get any worse, my mother passed away. My foster families and I didn’t quite work out. I just had too many medical problems. I felt unwanted and alone.

A Healing Heart

That is when my social worker brought me to the Methodist Children’s Homes. I found myself surrounded by people who actually cared about me and understood my health problems. The best thing about my new home is nurse Bessie and the medical clinic. She is always there when I need her. Without MCH and the medical clinic, I would not have a place to call home.

I am asking that you look into your heart and create another miracle like me!

HERE IS YOUR OPPORTUNITY There’s so much more to be done… with your help the medical and counseling clinic can reach more youth.

Let me tell you about Valerie. Valerie came to MCH with a bucket list of abuse. She was sexually abused by family members and physically abused by others. She brought with her anger, sadness, hurt and medical needs. Like all of our youth, Valerie visits the counselor and nurse regularly.

At MCH it’s important to treat the whole body. We focus on treating the mind, body, and soul. At the medical clinic, our nurse, Bessie and our therapeutic counselor, Amy has built bonds and relationships with each one of our youth. This is critical, because building trust is not easy for our youth like Valerie and Destiny*.

Before I ask for your help, I want you to know exactly what will be accomplished with your gift today. Your donation will go towards providing prompt and personal medical attention. Some of those services will include individual, group and family therapy, as well as, all primary medical services and treatments.
