Surprisingly enough, there will be many welcoming the Autumn/Winter wardrobe, putting flowery cotton dresses away to make way for woollies and boots. The more organised will have put away the winter woollies at the start of the summer and will by now have swapped the summer clothes for the heavier items of clothing. But the seasonal changeover deserves the addition of a few new items and already the rails are awash with darker shades. But dark needn’t

While spring-summer played up lightness, for autumn-winter 2013 fashion is going dark. Designers proposed a woman of many dissimilitudes, from mid-century ladies to femmes fatales, from punk to grunge queens. But before you all start getting the safety pins and beanies out, take note that an element of glamour is still key.

hese are not for the faint of heart, as designers have turned towards looks with plenty of attitude, perhaps as a communal backlash against the minimalism of past seasons. We've scoured the catwalks for the top five trends to watch.

Punk is on many designers' minds. Although the look means dressing down, there is still a luxe edge thanks to the right details and fabrics. On the catwalks designers sent out rock chicks dressed in vinyl trousers, and dresses paired with cashmere and fur.

Accessories include heavy metal jewels covered in spikes, nails and bolts. Another punk staple - leather jackets - are given a cool street vibe this season where it appears mixed with houndstooth and denim. And what's the ultimate punk accessory? Biker boots draped in chains, naturally. If channelling the Sex Pistols is too extreme, you can always go grunge - the popular movement from the 1990s. This season’s version, however, are way more glamorous. Courtney Love wannabes will revel in styles including vintage floral and embellished baby-doll dresses, covered up with slouchy cardigans and tartan flannel shirts.

Models even wore diamanté-studded tights on this season’s catwalks.

Coat and glam-rock ensembles are everywhere this season. For couture, designers referenced everything from Dior's New Look to film noir and Alfred Hitchcock. And while hourglass shapes and skirts dominated the catwalks, the look was still decidedly modern. The catwalks featured coat dresses and full skirt suits with voluminous sleeves and belts around the waist. Oversized floral opera coats team up with pleated skirts. Swinging jackets came with ribbons tied loosely around the neck while 1950s-style strapless gowns were updated in sexy leather. For something more street-friendly, opt for the mid-length skirt. Skirts that are flared below the knee will help make this look très chic.

Sometimes it's fun borrowing clothes from your boyfriend's closet. This season's must-have coats are distinctly menswear-inspired, with styles ranging from oversized to double-breasted. Tailored blazers come

with pinstripes and uneven hems, while oversized coats have rounded shoulders. Although in a more tomboy fashion, mixing masculine grey leather jogging pants with pinafore details, prom-style dresses and buttoned-up shirts. Designers have worked masculine tailoring into sharp feminine silhouettes. Many designers incorporated traditional menswear fabrics. Tartan is the top choice.

Other popular fabrics included herringbone, houndstooth, pressed wools and tweeds.

Banish those dark winter days with autumn's sweet shades of baby blue, powder pink, yellow and lilac, this season’s key colours. Pastels for summer seem sweet and sunny, but these autumn creations add edge.

KEY ITEMS TO FALL FOR • The curved heel: as proposed by everyone from Roger Vivier to Christian Dior.

• Suede pumps: this rich fabric adds dept and texture to autumn looks.

• The midi skirt: choose from super flared or tight; just make sure it hits below the knee.

• An oversized coat: menswear silhouettes rule, or go for a style with rounded shoulders for a modern look.

• Tuxedo jacket: this must-have appeared everywhere from Saint Laurent to Yohji Yamamoto.

• Chunky necklaces: make a statement with heavy-metal punk.

• New prints: florals may still abound but it's all about camouflage (à la punk) or innovative marble prints.

FOREVER YOUNG

T

here are ways getting your skin to look firmer and younger than going under the knife thanks to the advancement in cosmetic treatments.

The newest treatment available in Galway is the Age Loc Galvanic Spa Facial, which doesn’t come cheap at €99 but certainly yields immediate and lasting results.

The one hour and 15 minute facial is available at the holistic hair and beauty clinic Natural Serenity on Augustine Street, where owner Olga Nurzhanova from Russia, also provides a tattoo removal service using the latest technology.

Lucky for me, I don’t have any tattoos to remove, though Olga assures, the process is practically painless.

However, the ravages of daily wear and tear takes its toll on every face and regular facials certainly go a long way towards rectifying this. Two gels are used during the facial, the first which removes impurities and allows the pores to breathe and the second facilitates recovery from stress by reinvigorating tired skin and promotes cellular energy.

As well as being a hands on treatment, the therapist does use an electronic massager to stimulate the skin and help deliver anti-age ingredients. It is a pleasant sensation and it leaves the face glowing afterwards, in a good way.

This facial is not cheap at €99 but it does use advanced technology which delivers anti-ageing ingredients for up to 24 hours afterwards to send age-reversing signals to collagen producing cells to help reduce the appearance of moderate to deep lines. So it is like Botox without the injection or the stiffness that many experience with that particular treatment.

No less than two gels are used in the course of the one hour and 15 minutes and there is a noticeable reduction of open pores and discolouration afterwards.

The stimulation of course increases hydration and the Nu Skin products and technology help to remove impurities and regenerate the skin cells.

It was believed for years that men kept their youthful looks through shaving – or rather the movement of lathering soap on the face. The same goes for facials. Regular facials would help circulation but this particular one claims to go further as it promotes anti-ageing properties in the skin.

Olga is thrilled to have the technology, the only one in Galway to have it, and encourages anyone who worries about ageing and facial lines to give it a go.

My concerns about the gadgetry used in the treatment were unfounded as it was a very pleasurable experience that did give immediate results. This was shown by the therapist working on the right side of my face first and showing me the difference. It did indeed seem to me that the effects of the treatment received continued to be beneficial for much longer than other facials.

A facial is indeed a treat and is bound to give a woman some results and this beauty clinic, Natural Serenity, does offer a range of them for different skin types at different prices. Olga says there’s a huge demand for tattoo removal and assured me that it wasn’t half as painful as getting the tattoo in the first place. She also does laser hair removal and permanent make-up. That involves lip liner and eye liner and is popular with people who feel they have lost a bit of natural colour as they get older.

“As we age we can lose colour in our face and look somewhat faded. This service can give back the confidence lost through the aging process in a natural and safe way. The technology used is very delicate and will not scar the skin.

“It is also good for those with severe hair loss conditions such as alopecia. We also provide a service to correct previous permanent make-up which is too dark on the skin, or was applied incorrectly,” says Olga.
