elcome to the summer edition of The Tribune’s Look magazine. Inside this issue Bernie Ní Fhlatharta looks at the one occasion on the Galway social calendar which gives us a chance to dress up to the hilt. And that’s of course the Galway Races. With the traditional Irish optimism of this Summer being a ‘proper’ one, Keith Kelly recalls 40 happy memories from past summer days spent in Salthill. And if you are anything like the average female then you probably get extremely hyped with the change of seasons! All because of one reason: the new apparel lines that drop in shops and online . . . we look at some of the top trends for this season. Who doesn’t love a summertime wedding? The food, the booze, the overall merriment that goes with celebrating holy matrimony . . . but the dress codes that come along with those summer wedding invitations aren’t always so clear! Denise McNamara explains all you need to know to make your ‘Glamping’ experience a great one. And, there are only a few weeks now ’till ‘school’s out for summer’ and the prospect of entertaining those limitless appetites for fun can be daunting. Denise looks at some really great local activies to suit everybody. With all of this and much more inside we hope you enjoy our summer Look magazine. Colm McSherry, Editor.

Glamping! I

hadn’t been camping at a music festival for nearly 20 years. When I turned 40 last year, my two best friends landed with a pretty amazing present – two weekend tickets to the Electric Picnic Festival. When I asked another friend if she wanted to come with me, she jumped at the chance. And when her daughter heard that she was going, we ended up becoming a foursome – two 40-something Electric Picnic virgins being mollycoddled on the adventure by two 20something festival veterans. The veterans were to organise the tent, I was the driver and we were to stop off on the way to get supplies. Being newbies, we were relying completely on the previous experience of our companions. Despite telling us that there would be a fairly long walk from the carpark to the camping area, we failed to really take it on board, overstocking on cans, food and water. So by the time we had dragged our gear to its final resting place, we were well and truly wacked with arms longer than our legs. So Lesson Number One was very hard learnt – carry virtually nothing with you and do it all on your back.

4

Denise McNamara

Dragging anything by hand even with wheels is an almost impossible task over fields and fields and fields. Lesson Number Two: forget about bringing loads of alcohol for the campsite. It’s a nightmare carrying them from the car. You can pre-order cans and collect them in the evening to avoid massive queues at the shop. Lesson Number Three: pay absolute attention to your equipment. The four-man fancy tent bought online was a total disaster. After attempting to put it up over two hours, the Order of Malta guy took pity on us and pitched in. Even he couldn’t figure out the bizarre instructions. By hour four, a girl who had the exact same tent took the mammoth task over. Only for her we would have been sleeping, literally, under the stars. But even with Florence Nightingale’s help we got a bit wrong, with the result that the first night was spent in chronic condensation, more wet inside than out. We were all bitterly cold, despite the lovely weather. A bit of tweaking the next morning solved the problem. My friend had borrowed a sleeping bag for the weekend but it turned out it was just a sleeping mat. While I shared mine with her, nothing could SUMMER 2013

compensate for a fully lined, head to toe, Arctic sleeping bag. Lesson Number Four: BYO (Bring Your Own) bed: Thankfully I had invested in a blow up mattress which was worth every penny of the €20 price tag. Another tip is don’t bother blowing it up until you arrive at camp. They have a van onsite where you pay €2 to blow it up and free to take the air out. The joy of sleeping on a comfy mattress instead of roughing it on the ground makes every hardship worth it. Lesson Number Five: Pay extra for the “comfy crappers” By the end of the first day the regular toilets are horrific, even not breathing through your nose won’t save the stench. We shared one wrist band between four, so it was a fiver each over the weekend. It meant that we went to toilets that were constantly cleaned, with ample toilet paper and soap to wash the hands. Lesson Number Six: Watch Wherever You Lay Your Hat: We made the fatal error of pitching our tent beside the Blue Bus, which blasted music all night long. It was great during the day to have tunes to bop away to but by 3am Jimi Hendrix became a little annoying as you tried to grab some shut eye for the next day’s musical marathon. Also it made you constantly hungry as it was the best pizza joint in the campsite. Overall the festival experience was fantastic – the music was incredible and a chance to get acquainted with a whole new world of the latest artists. Outside of the music - which included listening to the whole of Dark Side of the Moon with the sun blazing down one afternoon - we got to lay in hot tubs with shades on, have a massage in a tepee and drink mojitos under the stars. Make sure you bring your energy with you. You’ll need every ounce of it. Oxegen Festival takes place in Naas on August 3 and 4. The lineup includes David Guetta, Snoop Dogg, Calvin Harris and Jedward. Electric Picnic returns to Laois on August 30 August, 31 and September 1. The bill includes the Arctic Monkeys, Franz Ferdinand, Bjork, Eels, My Bloody Valentine, Fatboy Slim, Noah and the Whale. The Westport Festival of Music and Arts takes place at Westport House on the last weekend of June. The lineup includes Elvis Costello, Imelda May, Martha Wainwright and the Orquesta Buena Visa Social Club. SUMMER 2013

Happy Days

With the traditional Irish optimism of this Summer being a ‘proper’ one, these are a few memories from past summer days spent in Salthill. It is by no means an exhaustive list, and is one of personal memories:

1

5 6

Club award nights in the Banba, birthdays in the Olso and Communions in the ‘Sac’.

Getting to the raft and realising you don’t have any matches.

The wonderful world of bushing – goons up the back of Salthill Park; bottles of Buckie by The Swift; cans down the back of Newells garage.

2

Summers spent working in The Big Arc - the pushers, the slots, the poker machines, the roulette and dice tables during Race Week, the bingo five nights a week upstairs.

7

Electric Eddie and the 7 -Up Beat On The Street, teenage discos in Leisureland and the tennis club, and the 7-Up Discos in Twiggs.

3

The annual family visit to The Galleon during Race Week, with Chicken Maryland for Dad, gammon and pineapple for Mum, and the Galleon Burger for the three kids.

8

Trying to appear nonchalant as you went looking for the shift in CJs. Failing miserably on both counts.

4

Wrapping the box of 10 Johnny Blue in plastic, holding it above your head and doing the backstroke with one hand to keep them dry as you made your way out to the raft at Blackrock.

Superpints and Snakebite. My grandparents Michael - better known as Esha and Bridie Kelly sit outside their house, ‘Sea View’, in Salthill in the early 1990s watching the world go by.

The Salthill raft, jet-skis off Palmers Rock, diving off Blackrock Tower, and Ireland’s largest waterslide at Leisureland, where you’d get four turns for a pound.

12

Leaving the nightclub early to both beat the queue in The Wimpy, and get a good vantage point on the steps outside the Galleon for the inevitable Saturday night fight.

13

A friend going in to Beefeaters, opening his trousers and asking staff if they “have a bun for this”. The brilliant retort by owner, Barry Ward: “We don’t have buns that small”.

14

Six of us piled into Claire McGrady’s red Rover Metro, driving up and down alongside the Prom, shouting ‘greetings’ to young wans.

15

Sitting with my grandparents, Esha and Bridie Kelly, on white plastic chairs outside their house next door to O’Reilly’s Pub, watching the world go by.

16

Going to Murrays and Feeneys for a 99, or to Western House and Fancy Fare for Hiawathas, Wibby Wobbly Wonders, Fat Frogs, Chilly Willys, Calippos, Shuttles, That-A-Ways, Funny Feet and Golly Bars.

17

Perks Funfair, The Kentucky Derby, Laser Quest in Leisureland, and go-karting at the vacant site beside the Big Arc.

18

The different accents, from the local dialect – ‘Look a dat fien with the buere’ – to the annual northern invasion when it seemed that nearly half the population moved to Salthill in the week before ‘The Twelfth’.

19

Leisureland – the Renmore Panto, the John Player Tops of the Clubs and Tops of the Town, and endless big-name concerts.

20

The air show, the Salthill Fives, and having ‘A Whale of a Time’ at the Salthill Festival.

Playing pool in the Captain’s Deck in Leisureland. Graduating to snooker in the Dollar.

Lydon’s shop, Strawberry Fields café, McPeeks, O’Leary’s, and karaoke in the Shamrock Bar with Uncle Gerry.

Being asked ‘outside for a walk’ by a girl I fancied at a teenage disc in the tennis club. Turning down her offer because the DJ had just put on Crazy Nights by Kiss.

Getting whiplash when headbanging in The Castle.

Buying tomatoes and slices of ham from Billy O’Connor’s, and then getting chips from the Wimpy for a ‘proper’ Summer dinner.

29

A punnet of ‘real chips’ from Albert and Meidi in Del Rios, battered sausages in The Wimpy, Kamal’s Meal Specials and being introduced to Aromat for the first time at Salt ‘n’ Pepper.

30 31

Pongo in Claude’s and Slot Bingo in the Big Arc.

Getting into The Cullinane Inn for Sky’s Super Sunday before ‘Holy Hour’ at 2pm, and then hoping to time it just right so you’d get into the Sunday evening Mass at Salthill

The mandatory nightclub meal of beef curry from The Warwick. Eileen and Brian and Jim and Pat and Nigel and the legendary Beach Party nights in the Oasis.

36

Sweating over playing hands of 5p a spot in Cullinane’s. Marvelling at the lack of perspiration on the lads playing £2 a spot at the table beside us.

37

Walking ‘djoung wans’ back to Salthill Caravan Park and lifts back to a friend’s house on the Barna Bus after closing time.

38

The old black payphone in my grandparents house, one of the first in Salthill, where you put the money in slot ‘A’ and pressed button ‘B’ when the call was answered.

39

De Darga in O’Connor’s. Doesn’t Matter in the Oasis. Pyramid in The Warwick.

SUMMER 2013

If you are anything like the average female then you probably get extremely hyped with the change of seasons! All because of one main reason: the new apparel lines that drop in shops and online . . .

I

t can definitely be overwhelming at times - you immediately see 10 tops that you just "cannot live without" but then you come to the realization that you have no idea what style you really want to try and pull off. And you start wondering if that "jumper" style really caught on or if it's going to be a dud. News flash, it did catch on back a few years

ago...some people can pull it off great! One of the top trends for this Spring/Summer season is wearing shorts with button down, woven shirts. Stores like H & M and brands like Volcom and Roxy have made it very affordable to grab a simple, yet classy button down shirt to pair with a bold colour short. What's nice with button downs is that you can easily dress them up or dress them down. You can go for the sheer style with some lace on the back or with a more crisp, casual, cotton style that you aren't afraid to get dirty. Speaking of pairing tops with shorts... another popular trend that started coming around last autumn are lace shorts. Designers started making them in just one well known style, but that has expanded for the Spring/Summer lines into a more classic cut, looking almost like a twill short with a subtle lace overlay. You have probably noticed this next trend yourself: Stripes. The popularity of striped tops has come around on and off again for years, and this summer is no different. The look gives off a more nautical, classic vibe than anything else. Whether it be a tank top, a henley, jacket, skirt or handbag stripes are back, and in my opinion they are here to stay. The trend that is a real favourite is the Camping Vibes trend, which basically consists of wearing anything you want that is either down-to-earth colors/prints, or something that gives you a more rugged, effortless "I'm camping but am pulling off looking cute at the same time" sort of look. The Prints trend of arrows, and zig zags falls in line perfectly with the Camp Vibes trend as well.

Polka Dots is another one to add to the books. The softer kind though - the 80's trend seems to be leaving with the neon colored tops and bottoms...so what's left for the lovely dots is the quiet, romantic trend with light polka dots on sheer tops, scarves, handbags and wallets - sometimes with a little lace added to it. See for yourself, you just may fall in love with them. Another popular style trend for the Spring/Summer collections is the vintage pastel colours, especially mixed with denim fabric. Look around, they are all there. The colours of blush, mint green, beige, pale orange and soft purple are effortlessly making their way into this circle of trends. They make you feel perkier and a maybe a little kinder since they are not so bold. Any of these colors work great as tops, bottoms, dresses, swim suits and accessories. Trends are just that. Trends. The fun thing about fashion trends is that you can mix and match whatever you like so as to make your own trend. Do you like stripes and soft colors? Mix them together. Do you like bold zig zags, woven shirts and lace shorts? Mix them. See what you get. You’re guaranteed to do a great job at making up your own, unique style that will only inspire others.

Eye Candy You can use the benefits of eye shadow to make your eyes look larger, smaller, wider apart or even closer together depending on your look . . . Secret #1: Blending is key. You use three different colours: The base, usually a very light taupe, a highlighter for the crease and a main colour for the lid, but how to get them to look as if they merge into each other like the colours of a rainbow? Start light then go darker. Brush the base colour to the entire eye up to the brow bone (base is the lightest colour), apply the lid colour (the medium colour) and then apply the highlighter (the darkest colour). Also, don't be too heavy-handed or you'll have to start over.

Secret #4: Highlighter can make or break your look. When applying dark shadow to the crease of your eye, be careful to blend only on the outside edge. Get too close to the eye and you'll cause your eyes to look teeny and beady.

Secret #2: Choose shadows that make the colour of your eyes pop. At the same time, contrasting colours make eyes pop. Think a deep jeweled blue shadow on deep brown eyes or gorgeous golds with blue eyes.

Secret #6: Shimmer is hot, but shows off wrinkles. Shimmer makes eyes really pop, but it also highlights heavy lids, lines and wrinkles. If you don't have wrinkled eyelids yet, try this great look for shimmer: create a "nude" lid, but apply a bit of gold shimmer to the browbone. Gorgeous!

Secret #3: Never apply deep colour to your brow bone – unless you're doing a cover shoot for Vogue. You don't want the drama too much shadow brings. Apply shadow up to the browbone but don't apply shadow on the bone unless it's a neutral colour. 12

THE LOOK

Secret #5: Set shadow with a great base. Primers are super hot right now because they help set makeup that stays for hours. Apply a primer at the beginning of the day and sweep the shadow over it and the shadow stays on all day long.

Secret #7: Smokey is great. Keep colour to the lid and just under the lower lashline. Don't extend colour above the crease. Secret #8: You should splurge on a

good eyeshadow. A great eyeshadow will stay on your eyes all day long, while a cheap palette will have faded by the time you finish your midmorning coffee. Secret #9: How to pair shadow with red lips. Remember the beauty rule "Thou Shalt Not Play up the Lips AND the Mouth." If you're going for dramatic red lips (never out of fashion), cover unsightly blue lines on lids with a concealer or shadow primer and then keep eyeshadow light. Secret #10: Make eyes brighter with white. A dot of white shadow or pencil on the inside of the eye near the tear duct will make eyes look brighter. You won't believe how eyeopening this is. It works so great. Secret #11: Go for colour. The key is finding an eyeshadow shade that flatters your eye colour and skin tone. Taupe and lavender look great on all eye colours. Also consider mixing shades if you bought a colour that's just too bold for you. Electric blue with taupe can be perfect. SUMMER 2013

Cover story

Racing Diva There’s always one occasion on the Galway social calendar which gives us a chance to dress up to the hilt, and that’s, of course, the Galway Races . . .

W

hile it would appear more practical to dress for the weather complete with wellies and a brolly, more and more ladies are opting for a more stylish look. And who can blame them as there are few occasions that provide opportunities for fashionistas to dress up. No doubt the introduction of the Best Dressed Lady competition at the Galway racing festival has spurred women on even more to sport the height of fashion on the day, though in recent years, punters seem to dress up every single day of the week-long festival. And there’s no excuse really to dress up as there is a great selection of fashions available in local shops to suit all budgets. For our special race fashion shoot, stylist Carmel Daly found a complete outfit for under €80! Admittedly it is for a younger woman with a smaller figure but Carmel is adamant that once you know your proper body shape and know what styles flatter you, it should not be that difficult to find that special outfit. A good retail store with professional staff are there to help, though most people are afraid to ask and sometimes SUMMER 2013

make the mistake of bringing a friend or family member who might be too nice to tell you the truth. Some dresses fit perfectly in your size but other brands might be a smaller fit so you need to get the next size up or vice versa. Don’t despair. Nobody need know the size of your clothes – you can always snip off the tag! Give yourself time to trawl through the rails for that special outfit and try it on. Most shops will put it aside overnight so you can sleep on it and not rush your decision. If you build up a relationship with a saleswoman and you liked her advice before, don’t be shy to return and ask for suggestions again. A good saleswoman is helpful without being pushy. Comfort is important but on Ladies Day, it probably takes second place for most of the female punters as they don their best outfits and hope they will be picked by the scouts searching for contestants. So if you want to be noticed, you do have to go that little bit extra and finish off your outfit with accessories, which are a necessity, according to Carmel, for a race meeting. This is the one occasion where you can indulge your passion for fashion, where you can go over the top, if that’s your style, or where you can mix a homemade fascinator or hat with an elegant designer dress. Again, there are plenty of accessories in Galway shops, both in boutiques and in the chain stores to suit all budgets. And surprisingly, a €35 fascinator can look just as stunning as a €350 one, so it’s not about price. Some people, like Carmel, are lucky enough to have an eye for colour and can polish up an ordinary hat or fascinator by adding a ribbon or brooch to it. For our shoot, Carmel mostly relied on her own collection of jewellery, most of it costume pieces she has gathered down through the years. There wasn’t an outfit she couldn’t match up with something in her collection. The current trends for this summer are graphic prints, floral, print on print, colour block or linear so it provides great scope. Be on trend rather than trendy, Carmel advises if you don’t want to look like a fashion victim. Slightly thicker heels are more practical for walking around the racecourse, especially if you have to walk over grass, which is a possibility depending on where you park. Lace gloves can make an outfit too and are easy enough to store away in a clutch bag. And because this is the West of Ireland, a brolly is almost a must, though not the big bank-related golf ones. There is any amount of fashionable umbrellas about. Anthony Ryans have a great range. Chunky, statement jewellery is probably best as they come in so many different colours though you can’t beat a long string of pearls this season as the Twenties look is really popular because of the release of The Great Gatsby remake. Pearls can be used too as a headpiece or worn across the forehead. But at the end of the day, the great thing about the Galway Races is that anything goes and part of the enjoyment is people watching. Over the years I have seen any number of outrageous and wonderful outfits (not necessarily both at once) and for the sheer boldness of it, I dressed like a Victorian horse rider one year! That was based around a vintage dinner jacket (complete with moth holes that you couldn’t see), jodhpurs, a crisp white shirt and boots. As I said. . . anything goes. 18

Whether you choose eye-catching prints or solid colours, pair it with a long necklace or chunky bracelets, top it with a massive sun hat or oversized sunglasses, give it some lift with a wedge heel or keep it down to earth with some strappy gladiator flats, your maxi dress will always look gorgeous. The elegant femininity of the maxi dress is what attracts so many women to it: it makes you feel comfortable, free and sexy— all at the same time. Added bonus? It covers up pretty much any part of you that you just don’t feel like exposing. A maxi dress

will conceal every thigh lump and tummy bump. Add a cardigan if you want to cover flabby arms or just to keep warm. However, don’t button it up. Instead, let the hanging line of the cardigan compliment the silhouette line of the dress. This year’s summer fashion trends lean towards feminine and romantic styles and colours, with pastels, floral patterns and ruffles making the biggest impact. Your maxi dress can incorporate all of these trends. Or try to find a simple maxi dress with classic lines and solid colours that expresses timeless style, then keep it and wear it forever. One golden rule to remember when picking and wearing a maxi dress is to avoid looking like a tent. In order to do this, choose a maxi that cinches at the waist or under the breast. You can use a waist belt to create this silhouette, or simply find an empire cut dress. Remember, the dress is the statement piece, so don’t over-do it. The beauty SUMMER 2013

of the maxi dress lies in the fact that it offers high impact eye candy for very little effort so let it be the centre piece of your outfit. An alternative look completely, but equally easy to wear is the LRD/LBD! Think this dress is only for colder months? Think again. The classic little red or black dress gets a summer update this year. Add a bold skinny belt SUMMER 2013

and a statement necklace to give the piece a bit more color. Team it with a matching jacket and you’re good to go. And never out of fashion is your favourite floral print dress. Floral never seems to go out of style, especially when it comes to warmer weather looks. Flirty yet feminine, the floral dress easily brings you from daytime to looking great for a summer night out.

SUMMER 2013

Turning Heads Who doesn’t love a summertime wedding? The food, the booze, the overall merriment that goes with celebrating holy matrimony… But the dress codes that come along with all those summer wedding invitations aren’t always so clear.

B

lack Tie Optional? Isn’t masculine neckwear technically always an option? And ‘Informal’–does that mean your go-to skinnyjeans-and-blazer combo is ok? Well, not exactly. Let’s face it no one wants to look out of place at an event, particularly when said event will result in photographs that will potentially be decking people’s walls and Facebooks for generations to come. Cocktail attire doesn’t mean wearing the sexy LBD you’d normally reserve for a raunchy night of downing cocktails with the girls. You can look sexy and flirty, but you don’t want to look like you’re on your way to the night club. The ‘cocktail attire’ stamp is a time to have fun with for example a printed frock – but be wary of looking too formal or too casual. It’s perfectly acceptable to wear a floral-patterned tea-length cocktail dress; just be sure it isn't too ‘look at me.’ Go for subtlety in any pattern you wear. This is easily one of the more confusing dress codes out there. Does ‘black tie optional’ allow you the total freedom of interpreting your own level of comfort? Well, yes and no. It’s weird and confusing. It’s formal enough to go all out, but giving you an out if you don’t want to wear a gown. But avoid being that person who wrecks the group pictures with her ‘dress you

SUMMER 2013

wear to lunch, it’s best to lean towards the dressier side–but avoid going overboard with embellishments, or you’ll look like the mother of the bride… from ten years ago. How casual is too casual when dressing for a wedding? Try a patterned shift dress as a fun, failsafe option for an informal yet momentous occasion. Take clues from the invitation and location of the ‘I do’s'–or better yet, just ask the bride-to-be for tips. For an informal dress code shoes can make the look. Choose metallic flat sandals or wedges. What’s black and white and totally confusing? That whole black tie vs. white tie debacle. The major difference between the two dress codes comes down to the accessories: The one style element, in white tie, that’s a step up from Black Tie option is that ladies are welcome to wear elbowlength gloves in colours matching their dresses. Look in bridal shops for quality gloves that’ll give your outfit that Grace Kelly/Audrey Hepburn vibe. A fancy short cocktail dress is appropriate for either white or black tie, but it’s best to go for the classic drama of a floor-skimming number. Wear a long, formal dress, but, this doesn’t mean a maxi dress… it means a gown. Got it? Ah, the beach wedding. It seems so romantic and exotic in theory, but dressing for this occasion can be trickier than you might expect. In an

unmonitored environment like the great outdoors, there are other factors to think about that may effect the choice of dress. Take into consideration the elements that could come into play (ie wind, sand, and heat). A light dress with a longer hemline will help you avoid any wardrobe malfunctions, and bring a wrap or jacket if the ocean breeze picks up. As for footwear? Go with flats. Ladies do not wear spiky heels, it’s not appropriate. So, is it ever ok to wear white to a wedding? Traditionalists say that it’s never ok to wear white unless it’s described on the invitation as an allwhite party. Although more brides are choosing to wear different coloured gowns, you still shouldn’t don white unless you know the bride absolutely does not care. White summer suits, however, are fine. And leave the denim at home. Don’t wear jeans to a wedding unless specifically asked to do so. You’re not a kid. Super short skirts? You don’t want to be the wedding guests who gets photographed sitting at the wedding with a clear view up your skirt. And perhaps most importantly, never outshine the bride: if you show up in a dress that costs 10-times more than hers, with lots of sparkle, it makes you look like an attention whore. Sorry, but that’s what people will say behind your back, or to your face.

School’s Out!

T

here are only a few weeks now till ‘school’s out for summer’ and the prospect of entertaining those limitless appetites for fun can be daunting. Or course everything depends on what kind of weather we are graced with. The sanity of a nation is depending on the predictions of New Zealander Ken Ring to come true. The long range forecaster, who predicted the Christchurch earthquake and Ireland’s Arctic winters in 2010 and 2011, has predicted that temperatures will shoot up to a balmy 30C in a July heatwave. Ring, who uses moon, sun, and tidal activity to draw up his forecast months in advance, correctly predicted that March would be the coldest month of the year while we would have a very wet Spring in his 30

Ireland Weather Almanac for 2013. He also advised that the unseasonable icy conditions would continue sporadically into May. He has forecast conditions reminiscent of the glorious summer of 1995 with three largely dry months starting in the first half of July. Pleeeeeaaaasssssseeeee be correct. It will certainly make things a lot easier when it comes to deciding what to do with the kids. Trips to the beach and playground will be possible, a picnic or two actually enjoyable and a day out walking in the sun an actual prospect. In the last year we held birthday parties in the two pet farms nearest the city – Loughwell in Moycullen and Turoe in Loughrea. Both are brilliant for an affordable long day out, come rain or shine. Each had their particular favourites SUMMER 2013

for the littlies. Loughwell has a tractor which boots around the farm with trailers in tow containing kids in each. They also have two sets of go karts geared to older and younger ages, didi cars which are perfect for smaller legs, huge sand pits and a great zip wire. There are is a very gentle pony which gives carriage rides around a small track. In Turoe there is more of an emphasis on feeding and engaging with animals along a buggy-friendly trail. Both farms boast fantastic indoor play facilities which include massive slides and bouncy castles. Another thing I will definitely be doing again over the summer after buying an online discounted voucher is the cruise on the fjord in Connemara. We did it late last August and it was one of the loveliest afternoons we had all summer. It’s very pleasant SUMMER 2013

aboard the Connemara Lady which glides across the water across spectacular scenery, reminiscent although not quite as dramatic as the world famous Milford Sound in New Zealand. On board you can listen to the history of the area, enjoy a light lunch or an Irish Coffee, or go out on deck and watch the mountains, sea and sky – weather permitting. In town a cheap day out has to be the Galway City Museum, which is free, or Leisureland, which boasts a 65m waterslide and a pirate ship for the littlies. During the summer there is an outdoor amusement park and an inflatable obstacle course with paddle boats. Something I’m ashamed to admit I have never done will also be rectified this year. I’ve heard so much about Brigit’s Garden in Roscahill’s, Celtic festival

themed gardens set within 4.5 hectares of woodland and wildflower meadows. Its features include a nature trail, ogham trees, children's discovery trail, living willow play area, an ancient ring fort, roundhouse and the largest calendar sundial in Ireland. Each of the gardens represent the Celtic festivals of Samhain, Imbolc, Bealtaine and Lughnasa. Out Gort way another park I have never visited is Coole Park, which has free admission. This is touted as the top kids’ destination in the county by two of the family information websites. There are nature walks through the forest on marked trails, a walled garden, deer in an enclosure and tea rooms. We have the places, now all we need is the sunshine...

SUMMER 2013

So summer is finally knocking on your wardrobe doors and it feels great! Doesn’t it? Even though the feel of chunky knits and layering in the autumn/winter season is a love shared by many, but it’s now time for change!

A

lthough many parts of the country are covered in rain outside and the only thing you can think of wearing is a winter coat, in the fashion world if you’re not learning about the summer trends and figuring out what new items to add to your wardrobe you’re already late! Now is the time to decide what new trends work for you. So what are the top trends for this season? Stripes: Stripes are always popular for a nautical feel and this summer stripes will be more prevalent. Blazers and shorts: This look is not loved by every man at first but once they try it they are instant fans. Bright colours: Dusk blue, poppy red,

lemon zest, and nectarine (this year’s tangerine) are some of the top colour trends for spring. Bold patterns: Bold patterns have been seen all over the runways for summer. The bolder the better and if you’re really daring mix two different patterns in the same colour family. Navy suits: The typical black suit or tux has been replaced with navy. It still provides the sophistication you want just with an updated colour. Brown: You need a colour to offset all the bright colours you’ll be wearing this summer and various shades of brown is the perfect choice.

for women and now it found its place in men’s fashion. There are amazing military inspired jackets on the high street that are right on trend. Coloured trench coats: Coloured trench coats are one of the most exciting summer trends. Try a salmon coloured trench to add a special pop to your outfit. Slippers: Better known as smoking slippers or the shoes Hugh Hefner wears. Try them in fun colours, textures, and prints. White: White has and always will be a summer fashion trend for men. Clean and crisp in all white wins every time.

REVIVE ACTIVE – high quality health food supplement! “developed by an Irish company it aims to combat side effects of ageing process by boosting energy levels and improving cardiovascular and immune systems” Irish company, Galway Natural Health Company, has produced a newly formulated health food supplement designed to boost cardiovascular health, increase energy levels and support the immune system, combating the degenerative side effects of the aging process. Revive Active is a premium food supplement developed by a team of doctors and scientists; it is formulated with specifically selected active ingredients to help the process of slowing down ageing. At a time when more people are experiencing chronic fatigue and difficulty in everyday challenges including stress,

Key ingredients of Revive Active include: • • • • •

Coenzyme Q10 (Co Q10) L-Arginine L-Citrulline L-Carnitine Vitamin K2

Other ingredients include Vitamin D3, B6, B12, Folic acid (B9), Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Selenium, D-Ribose, Taurine and Pomegranate.

According to Dr Dilis Clare, a Galway-based leading authority on integrated medicine: "I have been recommending Revive Active to my patients over the last two years, they have reported it to be particularly beneficial for fatigue, low energy, borderline hypothyroid problems and patients with early evidence of raised blood pressure. Where chronic stress causes debility or patients report feeling 'rundown', my patients have been pleased with the

Dr Dilis Clare

results of taking Revive Active. The combination of nutrients offers value for money, the range of supplements is well chosen and the ingredients are well absorbed. The use of natural sweetener and the pleasant taste makes for good compliance with treatment. Overall patients report good results with Revive Active". Others who have reported positive results from taking Revive Active on a daily basis include Warren Gatland, Lions Rugby Coach 2013, who says: “Revive Active has helped with my clarity and focus in pressure situations. My energy levels and overall well-being have improved.”

Revive Active is a smart natural choice. Revive Active is a water based soluble supplement that comes in a sachet and is easy to prepare. Its orange and mango flavour makes it pleasant to consume. Using only the highest quality components to produce the supplement, Revive Active comprises over 26 ingredients that, when combined have a more potent effect than if taken individually. To purchase all the individual ingredients in the same quantities with the same quality would cost five times the RRP of one month’s supply.

SUMMER 2013

Tracy Piggott, television presenter with RTE and BBC, reports: “I’ve noticed that my concentration levels have improved immensely. But above all else I just feel so much more energy.” Revive Active is available from select Health food stores and select pharmacies nationwide or online at www.reviveactive.com
