Sydney embracing a city lifestyle A recent trip to New York to meet with Manhattan real estate agents, observe apartment open for inspections, and discover pockets of the city I hadn’t visited before, gave me a glimpse of the prestige apartment market in New York City, but also confirmed a trend that I’ve observed for the past few years in Sydney. Reflecting on the week-long trip, it’s clear that Sydney has really embraced apartment living in the CBD as a viable option. Living in Sydney’s CBD has always been a drawcard, but demand has been increasing over the past ten years, and this trend looks like continuing. The trend I see is that it’s not just young professionals and downsizers, but increasingly young families, who are choosing to head to the city as opposed to spreading out into greater Sydney. All three demographic groups are attracted to the ease and convenience of a city lifestyle. It’s a trend that I can comment on personally, as my young family has relocated to the city to capitalise on the great Sydney lifestyle on offer. Sydney is only now just beginning to replicate New York City in that way. Of course New York has a much longer history of city apartment living than Sydney. Attending Tribeca and Soho open homes was a great experience. These are two phenomenal areas in New York and the area reminded me of Millers Point to an extent, with its period homes, tree-lined streets, and historical pubs. 5th Avenue on Central Park is an envied address in New York, but I couldn’t help but compare it to Sydney’s Elizabeth Street overlooking Hyde Park. Although it is on a much smaller scale, Hyde Park’s open spaces provides one of the world’s best easterly aspects for apartments on Elizabeth Street. The Rocks, Walsh Bay, Circular Quay and Hyde Park precincts continue to invite all demographics to Sydney apartment living. I can’t help but feel that with the completion of the Barangaroo development the attraction of a city lifestyle will only develop further.
