When four-year-old Tom was killed in a roadside accident on the Central Coast of NSW in 2014, his parents Michelle and David McLaughlin decided to take matters into their own hands. The couple launched the Little Blue Dinosaur Foundation – inspired by Tom’s love of drawing the prehistoric. The charity seeks to promote awareness of child road safety, a simple premise that targets change through community education, government campaigns and emphasis on road safety initiatives.

“We saw so much potential in Tom’s young life and we are now striving to ensure that he still has a chance to achieve meaningful outcomes for our community and particularly young children through the work of the foundation,” says Michelle. We know that talking to the community about road safety is key to the foundation’s success, along with its proud ability to provide support for families and loved ones who have lost a child themselves. We are working with local government on the Holiday Time signage campaign to incorporate posters, banners, notice board inserts, and signs to draw attention to the issue of child safety, especially when crowds swell during school holidays. However, Michelle stresses that this awareness should be maintained year-round. “Since Tom’s fatal accident occurred in January 2014, 128 Australian children under the age of 16 years lost their lives to road trauma. These families are sadly changed forever in their dynamic due to the loss of their precious child. “Forming the foundation in Tom’s honour has helped our family in terms of still being able to provide a form of care for Tom each day, as he remains a valued member of our family,” says Michelle. “Tom was a happy, bright and extremely caring child, and I know he would be proud of the work we are achieving in his name.” www.littlebluedinosaur.org
