Hong Kong institution where bite-sized delicacies have achieved world wide acclaim, Michelinstarred dim sum masters Tim Ho Wan has found a new base in Sydney, Australia.
Known as the world’s cheapest Michelin star restaurant, Tim Ho Wan decided Australia would be the best place to expand, because diners have such a diverse palette, which is tuned to more authentic Asian flavours. “Australians understand good food. Their tastebuds are attuned to Asian food and the ritual of enjoying dim sum is part of the culture here, which is why we chose Australia

to launch rather than Europe or the U.S.A,” Tim Ho Wan Director of Australian operations Vince Howe said. “The first foreign review of Tim Ho Wan even came from Australia,” he added. It all started back in 2009, when former Four Seasons Hong Kong chef Mak Kwai Pui opened his first dumpling restaurant and it wasn’t long before the word spread and lines were out the door. Now, after satisfying thousands of patrons in Singapore, Taipei, Hanoi, Kuala Lumpur and Manila, Sydney receives the first Tim Ho Wan offering outside Asia. The first restaurant opened in Chatswood in March and the next will be launching in Burwood in the third quarter of this year, while the flagship on George Street in Sydney’s CBD is set to welcome its first diners in late 2015. To ensure the original standard of quality is replicated, Mak Kwai Pui himself will be visiting each venue to supervise the launch. There is even talk of more Aussie cities receiving the Tim Ho Wan experience, but only one confirmed in Melbourne’s Chinatown to open later in the year. timhowan.com.au
