With a name inspired by their favourite Pavement album, newly opened café Brighton the Corner sits between Palace and Brighton streets in Sydney’s inner west.

Occupying one of Petersham’s oldest buildings (a former bar, general store and then café) new owners Michael Coombs, Nigel Park and long-time friend Scott Duncan had good bones (and windows) to work with. A two month renovation by the owners themselves has given a fresh and light-flooded industrial look to the charming corner store. Bright touches of yellow bring it to life, and giraffe coat hooks by the door are a happy touch. With worn floorboards and a striped awning reminiscent of days-gone-by, the café has a neighbourhood-friendly atmosphere and a menu that features some of Duncan’s most loved dishes.

A commitment to making every element in-house sees head chef Duncan working seven days a week.

“We’re curing and smoking our own salmon, and our beef burgers are cold-smoked. We just try and do as much as we can in-house. All our jams, marmalades and yoghurts are made here,” he says.

Judging from the weekend breakfast queues his hard work is paying off.
