National Day commemorates the founding of the People’s Republic of China on October 1, 1949. The Central People’s Government passed the Resolution on the National Day of the People’s Republic of China on December 2, 1949 and declared that October 1 is the National Day to be celebrated every year. Companies hang lanterns to celebrate and people take time out to travel. National Day is another golden week for the Chinese and brings a variety of grand ceremonies and activities, such as a great ceremonial review of troops and fireworks in the evening. National Day lasts three days but people usually get a seven day holiday which combines their National Day holiday and two weekends on either side. With a week off, many Chinese travel domestically and internationally. Travel fares double and triple and advance bookings must be made weeks, even months ahead for international travel. Hoards of tour groups flock to the major tourist destinations of China, so you can forget having a quiet moment to ponder how the Great Wall was built. In 2013, China National Day holiday will run from October 1 to October 7.
