“T

As we continue to be enamoured by global cuisines, cookery and nutritional education – the most extreme offshoots of which comprise television channels with 24-hour dedicated cookery programming – our kitchens have entered a new age of maturity, many of which are kitted out with the latest and most high-tech equipment that would put even some of the world’s most celebrated restaurants to shame. “We’re very interested in the shifting role of the kitchen”, Zilberman continues as he enumerates to me a litany of insights into how, even just in the space of the past forty years, the kitchen has evolved from the hidden, simply utilitarian space of yore, to a veritable stage of modern life – the crown jewel among our homes’ most public spaces. As a consequence, your kitchen has become a haven of, simply, ’the best’: the best in appliances, the best in design, and the best in materials. After all, to create culinary masterpieces, only the best in talent and tools will do. Little wonder, then, that stone remains just as central to kitchen design today as it has for so many millennia. But what, exactly, is it about stone that we find so enrapturing? Certainly, there is no other natural element that propels our imagination in such histrionic directions. And there is certainly no other material to which we habitually return to express our very humbled, human orientation to the natural world. Stone is romantic. Stone is elegiac. And perhaps this is because stone cannot but help to remind us of our own fleeting ephemerality. As the physical manifestation of centuries, shaped by time’s passing, the ravages of wind and rain, stone is a microcosm of our world, expressing our dreams for duration and our worries of transience. The Italians have always known this – a civilisation built on (and to a large degree, from) marble. And along the Italian coast, a handful of miles from the ancient Roman city of Caesarea, Caesarstone is continuing thousands of years of tradition in celebrating the region’s quartz.

Responding to our modern love for the highperformance, high-drama kitchen environment, however, Caesarstone has sought to marry our love of luxurious stone surfaces with an impressive degree of research and development into ensuring that our kitchens are well and truly ready to weather the future. Having last year celebrated milestone collaborations with the design world’s biggest names, the brand has just announced a game-changing partnership with the New York-based firm Snarkitecture (that’s right! The guys who’ve revolutionised brands as influential and wide-ranging as COS, Adidas, NetJets, Nike, and more). The collaboration, announced in anticipation of the world’s largest furniture and design fair, Salone del Mobile di Milano, looks forward to investigating what the effect of this rampant rise in culinary culture is going to have on the future appearance and function of our kitchens. For many, the collaboration has already been earmarked as a ‘Milan Must’, with teasers and a frisson of excitement already punctuating the pages of the world’s most coveted art and design magazines. As the fifth iteration of Caesarstone’s designer collaborations which, in previous years, has seen the brand collaborate with the likes of Raw Edges, Jaime Hayon and Tom Dixon (to name a few), the 2018 collaboration with Snarkitecture has already revealed some intriguing insights into how our kitchens are going to evolve. “The theme of the kitchen island resonated with us,” Snarkitecture’s Alex Mustonen tells me, “because of this understanding that the kitchen is the social hub of the house.” What has appeared to have ignited the world’s interest in the collaboration, however, is the degree to which their findings suggest that the kitchen island has been highly responsive to technological changes surrounding our management of water in the home. Now with an impressive armoury of appliances, advanced plumbing technology and instant boiling and cooling systems at our fingertips, the kitchen island is no longer a space

for the preparation of ingredients, but a stage of culinary and alchemical performance. The resulting installation to be revealed in Milan within the coming months investigates just how much our growing mastery of water in all of its forms has not only pushed the boundaries of kitchen design, but also extended the possibilities of our culinary expertise. Caesarstone and Snarkitecture have created a series of interactive sculptural reimaginings of the kitchen island, each of which incorporate water in its various forms of fluid, vapour or frozen, crystalline solidity. Playing with the material of Caesarstone’s range is, of course, a genius move: proving that the weightiness and durability of stone need not eschew the possibility of creating soft, organic and almost elastic forms within your kitchen. Sinewy lines and rippling gradations cleverly reference the natural veining within quartz, while the presence of water demonstrates the stain and microbial resistance innovation Caesarstone has perfected in recent years.
