Absences If a student is absent because he is sick, or for family reasons, parents must contact the College office before 8:30 am on 034676620 or on absences@mcglashan.school.nz. Office personnel will contact home if an absence is not confirmed. Where prolonged or recurring absences are planned, please advise the College office well in advance.

Active McGlashan We expect that the students of the College will be active contributors to local and global societies. They will be active in mind, body and spirit. We expect that they will make genuine, interpersonal connections with each other. We expect that the students will engage in activities that are IT free during break times throughout the school day.

Appointments and Signing Out Students may not leave the College grounds without permission. Students, who need to leave the College regularly, e.g. day students going home for lunch, must have permission. Students should arrange appointments in their own time. Students, who go home because they are sick, or who have appointments, are required to sign out using the system in the foyer.

Assemblies, Chapel and Special Services Attendance at assemblies, chapel and special services are compulsory. Special services are held each year. Parents and other members of the College community are encouraged to attend. The official services are: â—?

Easter service (day before Good Friday) In addition, there are borders' family services in conjunction with a meal the Sunday evening before the new term begins.

Bags No specific bag is mandated, however it is recommended that the colour of the bag be dark blue, dark grey or black. The College office sells high quality chiropractic backpacks in a variety of sizes with a lifetime guarantee.

Bicycles Day students may ride bicycles to the College. They should be kept locked, in the cycle stand by the Gilray teaching block, during the day.

Cycling is not permitted in the College grounds.

Boarder’s Lunch Our dining hall, which feeds our boarding students every day, also provides an on-site option for lunch. Boarder’s lunch can be ordered for a term or for the year. The cost is charged to your account.

Boarding Houses Boarding Houses are out of bounds to all day students at all times unless they are in the company of a staff member or invited by the Director of Boarding.

Canteen The canteen is a reasonably priced option for lunch. There are daily specials, and a variety of hot and cold, and healthy foods. Hot food and lunch orders can be made at intervals to be picked up from a separate line at lunchtime. The school canteen is available at interval and lunchtime for students to purchase their lunch. Students may pay by cash or EFTPOS. Lunch may be purchased on account through the student office only.

Communication Communication between home and the College should be frank and open. We encourage parents to contact teachers or the Principal or a member of the Board if they have concerns about; ● ● ● ●

their sons’ progress or events at the College or College policy or other matters of concern.

Parents should get to know their sons’ form teachers and keep them informed about any issues that could impact on learning. We have an ‘open-door policy’ and we welcome parents and visitors to the College at any time.

Concerns and Complaints We undertake to deal with complaints immediately, to refer them to the person concerned, to ensure that there is opportunity to respond and explain and to inform the person making the complaint about any decisions that have been taken.

Any concerns in the first instance should be dealt with informally with the affected parties. If a resolution is not met then the complaint should be logged in accordance with the Concerns and Complaints policy which can be found on the College website.

Dux and Proxime Accessit Awards ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ●

Average Grade Point Average (GPA) calculated for a student’s subjects, and then multiplied by the number of subjects taken to produce a rank list for NCEA students. The top six NCEA students will then have more detailed marks assessed.

Only subjects taken in the current academic year will count. Previous year’s results can be considered to separate tied candidates.

Standards Not Attempted (SNA) in trial exams count as Not Achieved (NA) for purposes of GPA (as we do for scholars ties etc.)

All subjects are treated equally unless the weighting of internal assessment significantly outweighs externals.

Only valid & reliable data will count towards Dux calculations.

A single overall percentage (%) based on actual internal & practice exams (as per IB weightings for each subject) needs to be provided to generate a ranking amongst IB students.

If students are equally ranked, grades from Pamoja or self-taught will be considered lower than internal ones and could be used to discriminate between two students.

SL subjects will carry a GPA weighting of 0.8. HL subjects will carry a GPA weighting of 1.2.

The IB and NCEA systems are different. A formula is used to equate one with the other when determining final placements when needed.

Email & Google Accounts Your son may access his College Gmail account using the following link: https://accounts.google.com/login Email address: preferredname.surname@mcglashan.school.nz (e.g. joe.bloggs@mcglashan.school.nz ) Password: Passwords will be emailed to caregivers later this term.

This account also gives students access to Google Drive, Classroom, Docs, Sheets and other Google apps commonly used throughout the College.

In particular, students should take care to store or back up all school work in their Google drive which has unlimited storage.

EOTC - Education outside of the Classroom In order to streamline the consent process for educational, cultural and sporting activities conducted by the college, we request that parents and caregivers provide an overarching single written consent.

Form Classes Each student is a member of a form class that meets every day. The form teacher, who has responsibility for the pastoral care of the students in his or her class, should, usually, be the first point of contact for parents who want to meet with their son’s teachers or who may have issues to discuss or concerns to raise. Your son’s form teacher best handles day-to-day matters such as absence notes, requests and explanations.

Hair Hair must not be artificially coloured and styles must not be unkempt or too unconventional. The Deputy Principal will make decisions about whether length or style is acceptable. Students who are unhappy with his rulings may appeal to the Principal. Students may be sent home to correct unacceptable styles or cuts.

Harassment Physical, verbal or sexual harassment will not be tolerated. Any member of the College community – whether teacher, student or employee, who knows about, or is the victim of harassment, should complain to the Principal, Deputy or Assistant Principal – or any teacher. They will take action in line with the College policies and procedures.

Health & Safety Occupational Safety and Health legislation requires that the College maintains a safe environment. All accidents, whether in the playground or classroom, should be reported to the teacher in charge at the time and should be treated in the first instance at the College sick bay.

If there is an emergency, the staff member dealing with it will contact parents and take whatever action is necessary – including taking the student to the Accident and Emergency clinic. Please ensure that we have a contact telephone number during the day and the telephone number of someone else – e.g. neighbour or a grandparent whom we might contact in an emergency. If you become aware of any hazards around the College, which have not been identified appropriately, please let us know.

Students’ emotional well being is equally important and students at McGlashan should feel safe and secure at all times. Students, or their parents, should tell form teachers or someone from the senior management team if they do not.

From time to time, also, Deans may refer students to the counsellor if they feel that this would be appropriate If your son is on long-term medication, which he needs to take during the day, please give us the details, tell us about any warning signs that we need to be aware of and how we can assist if necessary.

Holidays During the Term All planned leave during term time must be put in writing well in advance to the Principal, Neil Garry. The office staff also need to be informed. Holidays during term time are an unjustified absence.

The Ministry of Education states ‘While holidays may provide valuable learning experiences, they can cause gaps in students' understandings that are not easily detected. In the senior years, there is emerging evidence of substantial impact on students' NCEA achievements.’

Homework Homework diaries are issued to all Year 9 and 10 students. Homework is set on a regular basis. This has several objectives – to support what has been learned during the day, to develop research skills, to encourage independent work habits and time management and to practise and revise work studied in class.

Serious students should, from the beginning of the year, have a clear and precise timetable of work to be covered and targets to meet.

Homework notebooks, digital reminders and digital notes are a useful tool for organising and setting out this information. It is essential that students form good habits and skills when noting upcoming homework and assessment requirements.

ICT Requirements 2020

From the start of 2020 McGlashan will remove the restriction requiring students to bring either iPads or Macbooks. Increasingly, students and teachers are accessing most applications, communications, and storage online - the particular device, platform, or brand etc being used matters less and less.

In choosing an appropriate device for school the following points should be considered:

You should expect to have at least 2 devices over your time at McGlashan. Boys coming in at Yr 7 will likely want to upgrade their devices at Yr 10 or 11. Boys coming in at Yr 9 might wait a little longer.

Do you have a suitable device already that will meet your needs for the first year or so?

Will I be using this device for other than school work - if so, will I require something with higher specifications?

Size, weight, battery life etc are important considerations - you will be carrying this device to every class - it needs to be sufficiently robust and protected in a case or sleeve whenever possible.

At senior levels examinations are increasingly being completed digitally and require devices with keyboards - we would encourage developing keyboard skills as early as possible.

School recommendation: The experience of using iPads over past years has demonstrated the flexible and creative aspects to having a touchscreen device, especially in the junior years. However, we have also experienced the limitations of not having the full functionality and power of a laptop. We are therefore encouraging students to consider a hybrid (2-in-1) laptop. These are modern laptops that are flexible in their use - touchscreen tablet-like as well as full laptop mode. There are a wide range of these on the market and at a wide range of prices.

Parents are welcome to source devices wherever they can find the best deal although Cyclone Computers (Dn) is the school’s preferred provider.

ICT User Agreements

The measures to ensure the cybersafety of John McGlashan College are outlined in the following document. These measures are based on our core values.

IT Free Break time From 2020, we expect that the students of the College will not be connected to nor on their devices before school and during break times (between classes, at interval, and at lunchtime) - this includes headphones. Students will be expected to engage with those around them and in lunchtime activities that are IT free.

Jewellery Rings, earrings, studs and other conspicuous items of jewellery or ‘adornment’ are not permitted

KAMAR Portal KAMAR is the College's student management system. A key feature of this software is how it enables students and parents to access relevant information that the College holds. This includes: ● Student Timetable ● Attendance ● Caregiver details ● Reports ● Medical Information ● Contact details ● Results ● Qualifications etc.

It is also where you will find the daily notices.

It is expected that the KAMAR portal will continue to develop to be a vital source of information about your son and a means of ensuring that accurate data is held. It is encouraged that the KAMAR portal is accessed regularly.

You can access the KAMAR portal in two ways; ● the web portal kamar.mcglashan.school.nz (or link from the College website) ● download the KAMAR app for iOS or Android.

Your assistance in checking your details online and informing us of any updates of contact or medical information (via the link) would be appreciated.

Lateness to School Students coming in late to classes can be very disruptive for teachers and the class. If your son has an appointment early in the morning, please notify the school office before 8.30am. There are issues with traffic and road works, which have been on-going, and so it may be necessary to leave home earlier so that your son is in class at 8.40am.

Learning Support We expect students to extend and challenge themselves and to reach out to their full potential.

To cater best for their needs, we assess them at regular intervals and implement programmes of work that will assist them to regain lost ground. Sometimes this is by way of remedial programmes. In other cases, teachers may set up groups within classes or develop individual education programmes (IEP) for students who are likely to benefit from this. We set aside staffing and resources each year to

ensure that help is available to students who require special assistance and a student support team identifies students who need it and implements suitable programmes.

The needs of students who have special abilities, skills and strengths are also important. These gifted and talented students deserve opportunities to be extended and challenged. Enrichment programmes cater for them at different levels. Accelerant classes are well established in Year 10.

To allow for ‘multi-level studies’, the timetable is organised so that, in the same year, students in senior classes may study different subjects at different levels.

Lunches Students, other than Year 13 students, may not leave the College grounds to buy lunch. Day students are not to take other students home to lunch.

Newsletters The Pilkington Press newsletter is emailed home twice a term. It contains information about recent and coming events and activities, student achievements and other items of interest.

Parents and Friends Association The Parents and Friends Association meets monthly throughout the year. It is an opportunity for interested parents to involve themselves in fund- raising activities, to meet with other parents, to support the College projects, to discuss issues, to contribute to policy making and to act as a forum for the exchange of ideas about the College.

From time to time, the association arranges for visiting speakers, or staff members, to speak on topical issues in education. At the beginning of the year it arranges a “Meet the Teachers” night. The fete, held in the third term is a major initiative, which the Parents & Friends Association organises and runs for the benefit of all students.

Money raised in this way is put towards whole College projects and initiatives. There is a voluntary fee charged to parents’ accounts every term, which is used to supplement the Association’s funds.

Recognition of Academic Achievement at JMC In addition to the NCEA certificates, Certificate endorsements, and subject endorsements that NZQA award, John McGlashan College has a further range of awards that recognise even higher levels of achievement.

The underlying principle of these awards is that students must prove themselves in individual subjects and in the external exams, not just an accumulated total of internal Excellences across all their subjects.

Scholars Tie This is awarded to students who have gained a minimum of 3 Excellence subject endorsements at any level. Unlike certificate endorsements, subject endorsements must be completed in the academic year and are not cumulative across multiple years. For students completing subjects at a higher level than their academic year, a Merit or Excellence endorsement in that will count toward the requirement.

100 Club / 200 Club This is awarded to students who have gained a minimum of 4 Excellence subject endorsements (3 E & 2 M would also qualify) at the appropriate level.

For students undertaking the IB Diploma in Year 12, a total score above 35 would be expected to be in contention for either award.

NB: Students must be aware that gaining Excellence in the external examinations must occur to be eligible for these awards.

Progress Reports The College reports and other official communications will normally be emailed directly to parents.

Each year, parents receive regular reports on progress and academic achievement. The first report is a summary of progress made over the first few weeks of the year. It identifies any concerns that staff may have. At the end of Term 1, parents of junior students have the opportunity to attend report evenings – where they can discuss their son’s progress with individual subject teachers. A similar evening for parents of senior students occurs in Term 2. Of course this does not preclude parents from contacting teachers at any time to discuss issues affecting students’ progress.

In Terms 2 & 4, teachers write detailed subject reports. For senior students, these reports signal anticipated levels of success at the end of the year. reports should give parents and students accurate and fair summaries of progress and achievement to date. At any time throughout the year, parents may ask for a report from teachers on their student’s attitude and progress. Form teachers will arrange for subject teachers to compile these informal reports as soon as possible after they are requested.

Second-Hand Clothing Shop The second-hand clothing shop can be found opposite the Hockey and Tennis courts at the back of the Chapel. It will be open in 2020 on the following dates: ● ● ●

The shop will be open every weekday from 8 - 1pm after that.

New house singlets and rugby shorts will also be available at the Second-hand clothing shop.

Sport App (SchoolAppsNZ) Sporting information can be accessed on our sports app. You can choose John McGlashan College in the drop down and then select what sports you want to know about. It is available on Android or IOS.

Sports Uniforms Our sports uniform has a similar look across all codes. First teams are readily identifiable with more white panels on their strip.

Students are required to purchase their own sportswear. Our supplier is Otago Sports Depot and Canterbury International. The College will not hold stock so all orders are to be made through Brent Davies at Otago Sports Depot or online through the same supplier. The College’s aim is to deliver a quality product at the lowest price to parents and students.

Backroad© jackets are a rugby fundraiser which are not an official piece of the Sports’ or College uniforms. Backroad© jackets are optional travel wear which can be worn to and from games.

Stationery Requirements Order your stationery from “My School” via www.myschool.co.nz.

• Type in the name of the College, click start.

• Enter Name and year level of student.

• Select the Year level and subjects (note: year 7 & 8 have no subjects lists). For other years click on as many subjects as required.

• At the bottom of the page click view requirements.

Each subject will display a list of requirements. You are now able to edit or delete items as required.

This can then be printed to take with you or added to the shopping cart and ordered online through OfficeMax. All students are expected to arrive at the College with their stationery purchased for the beginning of the College year.

Subject Selection All information regarding subject choices for Year 9-13 students is available on the KAMAR portal page. Subject selections for the upcoming year will be available from Term 4 each year and updated regularly.

Student ID Cards ID Cards will be distributed to each student at the start of the year. ID Card photos will be updated each year. Your school account is linked to the ID Card which enables the students to purchase things on account like lunch at the canteen and stationery from the student office.

Student Support Team The student support team, made up of the deans, the guidance counsellor, special needs teachers and others, meets weekly. They regularly review students’ progress and develop and implement strategies to deal with issues that are raised or referred to them.

Amongst other things, they strive to identify those who may be in need of support, counselling or other forms of assistance.

Subject teachers, often co-ordinated by form teachers, may work together to develop strategies and systems which will enable them to be more effective in the classroom. Junior and Senior Deans coordinate the form teacher and pastoral care systems. The guidance counsellor plays an important role in assisting with pastoral care and is available to talk with students or their parents about issues,

from the comparatively minor to major crises. Please don’t hesitate to use our guidance counsellor’s skills, services and experience if you think this may be helpful.

Student’s Rights, Rules and Expectations At John McGlashan College, students’ rights include: ● ● ● ● ●

the right to learn – at a fair, individual pace, from teachers who act professionally, who prepare adequately and who take the abilities of different individuals into account. the right to teacher assistance the right to work in a safe and accepting environment, free from bullying and intimidation from either students or teachers. the right to tell their side in a dispute or conflict. the right to be represented on the Board and to have their say in decisions which affect them.

Each student at John McGlashan College is expected to: ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ●

Work to the best of his ability.

Wear his uniform, including his sports uniform, correctly and with pride.

Be at the College on time and at all classes on time.

Be responsible and self-directed.

Be properly equipped for all lessons.

Do the homework that is set in each subject.

Respect and care for all facilities, furniture and equipment.

Accept the right of others to be free from disruption or abuse.

Uphold the College’s good name.

Bring any alcohol, drugs, offensive or dangerous weapons, cigarettes, matches or lighters into the College grounds or buildings.

Wear incorrect uniform.

To leave the College grounds or be out of bounds without permission.

To interfere with the learning of others.

To defy the authority of any teacher.

To drop litter.

To assault or intimidate another person.

To bring the College into disrepute.

Enrolment at the College implies the acceptance of its rules and regulations. Students who transgress will usually be warned and may have other sanctions imposed. We will inform parents about serious incidents and, in some circumstances, parents will be asked to come to the College to discuss their student’s behaviour and to assist in putting strategies in place to deal with it.

Study Skills Study skills are the skills you need to enable you to study and learn efficiently – they are an important set of transferable life skills.

Key points about study skills: ●

You will develop your own personal approach to study and learning in a way that meets your own individual needs. As a general guide, you should have a designated time and a designated desk space set up to study from - not your bed. Your bed is for sleeping. You should commit to regular exercise and eat a healthy well-balanced diet.

●

Study skills are not subject specific - they are generic and can be used when studying any area. You will, of course, need to understand the concepts, theories and ideas surrounding your specific subject area. To get the most out of your studies, however, you’ll want to develop your study skills.

●

You need to practise and develop your study skills. This will increase your awareness of how you study and you’ll become more confident. Once mastered, study skills will be beneficial throughout your life.

●

Study skills are transferable - you will take them with you beyond your education into new contexts. For example, organisational skills, time management, prioritising, learning how to analyse, problem solving, and the self-discipline that is required to remain motivated. Study skills relate closely to the type of skills that employers look for.

Substance Abuse

Smoking, vaping, drug taking and drinking at the College, or at any function or activity associated with the College is forbidden.

Offences will be treated very seriously.

Teachers’ Rights We believe that teachers have rights also. They include: ● ● ● ● ● ● ●

the right to work in a pleasant and safe environment. the right to support from parents and from colleagues. the right to be involved in decision-making within the College (in curriculum, College organisation and management). the right to be treated with courtesy by students, parents, other teachers and Board members. the right to remove students from class when they disrupt other people’s rights to learn or to safe movement. the right to contact, and to back-up and cooperation from parents and to be informed of family situations and home problems which may affect behaviour and attitudes at the College. the right to seek job satisfaction.

Testimonials Students receive a testimonial when they leave the College from Year 13. This will be prepared in consultation with subject and form teachers. It is an important document because it summarises strengths and achievements, provides a record of learning and makes comment on character and attitude.

Year 13 Tie

The day is broken into six 50-minute teaching periods. As well, there is a block of time that is set aside for chapel, assemblies, form time, singing practice, visiting speakers, performers, house meetings and the like. Students are expected to be in class, on time, properly dressed with the right equipment. Students should arrive at the College, on time, at 8:40am.

The day will finish at 3:15 pm. Time after 3:15 pm may be used for ‘re-submissions’ and ‘re-testing’ for students being assessed under systems which allow for this.

Extra-curricular activities and meetings can be arranged in the time made available from 3:15 pm. However, re-assessments and tests have absolute priority for students who are involved with them.

Trips and activities outside the grounds In general, the rules and regulations outlined here apply at any student functions or activities associated with the College, or at College events which are organised and/or managed by staff members. Inappropriate behaviour on a weekend ski-trip, for example, will be viewed in the same way as if that behaviour occurred at the College.

Vehicles Day students, whose parents allow them to drive to the College, must abide by the rules according to the status of the student’s driver’s license. Students are to park their cars opposite the College sports ground or on Balmacewen or Cannington Roads, Passmore Crescent or Grater Street.

Weekly Effort Grades Each Friday, a weekly report will be sent home that provides feedback regarding student efforts displayed in classes.

Receiving a purple card is an honour. A signed letter from the principal is sent home which outlines the outstanding effort displayed by the recipient.

Receiving a blue card is part of the feedback process further informing the parents and students of behaviour that is not meeting the expectations of the College.

Welfare and Wellness Providing a “sound and liberal education” implies a responsibility to contribute to the development of the whole person.

At this college, we take a keen interest in each student as an individual. At staff meetings, briefing sessions, form-level and department meetings, and in other forums, teachers regularly identify students who may require help or give cause for concern, and develop strategies to assist them.

The College has a strong pastoral care network. Much rests on the form teacher who has primary responsibility for students in his or her form class. Systems, plans and form level meetings are organised and co-ordinated by deans. They, in turn, coordinate and liaise with the learning support team, the guidance counsellor and those who have responsibility for tone and behaviour.

Teachers are responsible for the welfare of students in their care. They will do their best to advise, guide, counsel and, where necessary, reprimand – reasonably and effectively.

At the same time, we are aware that nothing short of the highest professional standards is acceptable. Parents should contact the form teacher or the Principal if they are unhappy or have any concerns about the way any particular issue at the College has been, or is being, dealt with. A partnership between parents and teachers is important and it is strengthened if communication between home and the College is frank, open and frequent.
