$100,000 from The Blue Foundation The Children’s Oral Health Initiative awarded One Hundred Thousand Dollars by The Blue Foundation for a Healthy Florida It is a fact that low-income children have twotimes as much untreated tooth decay as children who live in families with higher incomes.

Thankfully, more in-need elementary school children from Miami Beach, Overtown and Little Haiti now receive important dental screenings, education and treatment to help decrease this health disparity. On September 10th, 2008, The Blue Foundation for a Healthy Florida, the philanthropic affiliate of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida (BCBSF) presented UNIDAD of Miami Beach with a $100,000 check to support their Children’s Oral Health Initiative. Since its inception in 2004, the Children’s Oral Health Initiative has provided universal oral health screenings and dental education to approximately 3,500 in-need children and preventive and curative treatment services to more than 800 children from uninsured and low-income families from Miami-Dade County. CHILDREN’S ORAL HEALTH INITATIVE This program provides universal oral health care screenings and education to elementary school children and free dental treatment for low-income, uninsured children. page 3

UNIDAD, the fact that a homeless child died last year from a brain infections stemming from an untreated tooth abscess clearly illustrates the importance of oral health care. “Many times, our screenings reveal children are experiencing severe dental pain because their parents couldn’t afford treatment,” said CepedaLeonardo. “The Blue Foundation’s grant enables us to help children who may otherwise go without preventive and treatment services vital to their overall health.” In addition to this grant, The Blue Foundation awarded UNIDAD $80,000 in 2005 to support this initiative,” said Cepeda-Leonardo. “We’re thankful to have their continued support.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 2
